This was it. She was going to do it, there would be no backing down now. Chuppi had always told herself that if she made it into second year she would confess her feelings - in English - and let the person she'd been harboring those feelings for know. It'd been a long year since she first laid eyes on him and felt that strange tug, a strange feeling unlike any thing she'd known. It had been quiet at first, though with each encounter it had burned like a small flame with a heartbeat.

She'd sent a message to him, not over groanspring and not through a text (she didn't have his phone number), but rather through a minipet that just happened to get lucky and find him. She asked to meet him at the track field, still overrun with weeds and in need of repair, but she thought it would be a good place as any.

In all honesty? Chuppi did not expect this to go well, and she was nervously drinking from her Thermos as she awaited his arrival. How could she bring it up, how would she bring it up? Just suddenly shout it out? What if he didn't want to be her friend anymore after this, or what if he started to hate her because of it?

No, no, she wouldn't think of those things. Right now she would hope for the best and hope they could still be friends after this. Just be friends.

And she would learn to move on.

Tybalt had to admit, when the message bearing minipet found him, he was confused and after reading the message he was a bit worried... Chuppi was asking him to meet her in on the track field and the black dog was beginning to wonder if she was angry at him for not tending to the field properly in her absence. Or maybe it was that he kept forgetting to put away equipment... Oh Jack... either way, she was probably pissed at him! What was worse, he had absolutely no excuse for his lack of responsibility.

By the time the black dog arrived on the track field, the he had already gone over and practiced several different scenarios in his head of how to apologize, but even after that, what it resulted in was--

"S-sorry for not taking care of the field..." He muttered miserably; head bowed and waiting for the inevitable scolding.

Chuppi nearly choked on the straw of her Thermos as Tybalt approached, her face turning six shades of red against the green. Her cheeks were almost as red as her eyes, if that were possible, and she turned to face him with as best a smile as she could muster. Her heart was pounding in her ears, and her fingers were squeezing so tightly on her favorite drink canister.

"It's....that's....not why I called you out here today. The field in this state is more my fault than yours, I am the captain and I have run away from my responsibilities." That was true, all of it, and she did feel more shame about running away than Tybalt probably could about not taking care of things while she was gone. She hadn't told anyone she was leaving so how would it have been his fault - how would he have known anyway? Still, like she had said, this was not why she called him out here.

She was going to confess whether she liked it or not, and her face turned redder than it already had been. At this rate she was likely to pass out. "The..the truth is I...have something to tell you." She paused and took a few sips from her Thermos, trying to gain its comfort somehow. The blood inside helped, but not how she wanted.

"Si...since the day I have met you, I have always liked you. Not as a friend, but....as a ghoul sees a boil. I...would say I love you, but.. . . I think it's more of a like that would lead to it."

There, she said it. She wanted to die now.

"Its not?" He blinked. Now he was really confused. Wait... was it. Was there track practice today...? No, there couldn't be... No one else was here and he was usually the last to arrive, never the first. Not to mention, why go through the trouble of writing a note and sending it by minipet when she could have just as easily used groanspring? No... it definitely wasn't track practice either...

So what was it?

The black dog waited for the chupacabra to finish speaking, listening quietly as she did so and for the first time since the the two of them met, the black dog clued into her feelings for him.

Gee, it only took someone spelling it out for him.

"What? You like me?" Huuuh?? No one has ever liked him before. Not in that way! The the fact that someone had just admitted it right to his face that they did, almost knocked the black dog off of his feet. He wasn't sure how to react, much less what to say. Poor Chuppi looked like she wanted to run away.

The black dog felt a pang of guilt. All the times before, all the hints... It was clear as day now. How could he have not noticed?

"I... I'm sorry..." He started to say, trying to word it as gently as he could. The last thing he wanted to do was hurt the first, and one of the best friends he had. "I don't think I'm ready for dating anytime soon... and I'm sorry if I hurt you because of my inability to realize all of this... I'm sorry..." He paused, holding his breath. "T-this isn't going to ruin our friendship will it..?"

Oh Jack he hoped not! Chuppi was one of his best friends!

She knew it was coming, and yet the words still stung at her ears and her heart like a bad thorn. It didn't matter how much she'd been telling herself to prepare for those words to come from his mouth - Tybalt had never seemed the type to like her or others for that matter. They had known one another for a full year at the school, but much of it Chuppi had been missing from the school and just now was trying to get her feet back to being wet with the school system.

Still. . . . she hadn't expected it to hurt this much, and she bit at her lower lip in silence as she kept the straw of her Thermos in her mouth. She wasn't going to cry, she wasn't going to let anything show. She'd made it into her second year now, part of the reason she was confessing, and as a big girl Chuppi didn't need to show her emotions so openly. She couldn't just remain silent though because Tybalt was looking at her, saying something.

He'd mentioned being 'friends', remaining 'friends.' She needed to respond to that, to let him know everything would be okay. The straw came from her mouth, and a gentle smile spread over her eyes and her lips. She needed to smile even if she wanted to cry.

"Hmmm? No way, we're still going to be friends! I can count on you to be my co-captain of the team still, correct? You will not want to not see me anymore?" She was doing her best, keeping herself calm and easy. She even waddled forward a bit, eyes wide and bright. Just keep smiling, she told herself, just keep smiling. "We will need to work on getting the team back in action though."

Subject change, keep smiling.

Though Chuppi shrugged it off and smiled, now that she had admitted her feelings for him, it was quite obvious to the black dog that she was pained by his answer. Which of course, made him feel terrible. Not just because he had not returned her feelings, but because all this time he had never clued in. Not once. Poor Chuppi... How could he have done that to one of his best friend? How could he not have noticed..?

The more he thought about, the more he was disgusted with himself.

"Of course you can." He answered.

He was tempted to give her a hug, try and comfort her in whatever way he could, but he had a feeling that would only make the pain for her even worse. What should he do? What could he do? He had never been in a position where the pain was something other than a physical one and certainly not one caused by him.

"Dude, why wouldn't I want to see you? You're probably the first person to ever treat me with kindness when I first came to this place. You were my first friend and you always will be."

Chuppi deserved someone better than him. Someone who would actually acknowledge her feelings.

"Ahh yeah. I think we'll be needing to whip a lot of people into shape. Maybe even recruit some new members. Since well..." A lot of the track team, he hadn't seen around campus. Maybe they had taken a leave of absence?

"We...can talk about that later, if that's okay? For some reason my mind is not of the focus on track, but on other things. Would you...mind leaving here first? I want to walk around a bit, has been a while since I've been here." That wasn't at all the reason why Chuppi wanted him to go away but it actually sounded the nicest. She was doing her very best, her very best, not to crush her Thermos beneath her fingertips. The blood she was idly sipping at was very, very bitter to her lips.

She kicked at a tuft of grass with her foot, the sharpness of her toes cutting it down to a manageable height. Weird how her claws could work like scissors when the time was needed and it was weird how she could distract herself by thinking that. "I...do think I will walk around here and take measures and decide what we should do. I'll send a note to you again when we can make a huge plan?"

Please go away.

It was all but written all over her face.

Tybalt wilted a little at her words. Though, she denied it, his rejection had obviously hurt her and he felt terrible for it. Nothing he could say or do would make her feel better right now. He knew that much at least. All he could do for her now was respect her wishes and leave her in peace. It was the least he could do anyways.

"Sure thing. See you around..." He answered, with a small nod and giving the chupacabra one last apologetic look before he turned and headed back towards the dorms and hoping that she'd be okay.

Someday, he was sure that she'd find someone who was worthy of her.

Chuppi watched Tybalt leave and said nothing, instead pushing the straw of her Thermos deeper into her mouth while she waved him off. She was smiling, or doing something similar to smiling, and she hoped he just felt that everything was okay. By the time he was out of sight the straw was halfway down her throat and Chuppi gagged, spitting the mouthful of blood she'd sucked in onto the ground.

It had tasted bitter and salty, not at all the sweet blood she wanted, and it was with tears in her eyes that she unscrewed the top and poured the rest of it out onto the grass as well. The bitter taste of iron lapped on her tongue, like the faint feeling of a first love lost.
