For a while now Gale had been feeling more and more distanced from the rest of the hunters. His sixteenth birthday had passed (unfortunately he hadn't grown any taller, not that he had expected to), he'd managed to pass to an Intermediate Hunter (in a manner of speaking), and things were going well.
Except in the social department. And one other aspect in particular.
Jinhai had continually been telling him he needed to "get out more," but Gale had been studiously ignoring him ever since the rifle had mentioned that Gale's hair was getting too long.
What he needed, really, was someone to help him out with...er, well, "the finer things in life," as his dad had used to say. Gale thought the term was horrible, but he figured there could be no harm in really asking a little advice all the same.
Which was how he ended up at the dorm room of one Marcus Hassan.
Gale hesitated just outside, wondering whether he really wanted to do this, but after a moment he sighed, then lifted his fist to knock on the door.

If Marcus had known Gale's birthday had come and gone he'd have gotten the younger hunter a gift. If Marcus had known he was feeling depressed he'd be trying to make Gale feel better. The thing was, a lot of this relied on 'ifs', not known facts. And Marcus? Well he never claimed to know much to start with. The knock at his door got him looking at his phone. Cass hadn't texted him, and judging by the fact he couldn't think of anyone having any reason to bug him for a mission- it was safe to open the door. He half expected it to be Leon or Jordan, come to cash in on the uh- favor he kind of owed them. But no, it was Gale. Smaller, sad Gale. "Hey." Did he come to talk about that mission he'd hinted at? Unsure he motioned to come inside. "What's up?"

"Er, hello," said Gale, with a nod up to Marcus. He stepped inside the other hunter's room, automatically glancing around. Rarely had he actually visited anyone else (considering his own antisocial state, and the fact that he did not have a great deal of friends on the island, it was not exactly a common occurrence).
Once inside, he turned around, fiddling with the clasp on one of his gloves and looking awkwardly up at the one person who could probably help him.
And most likely tease him about it in the process.
"I need to know how to talk to girls."
This was blurted out so abruptly that even Gale was surprised. His face coloring, he clamped his lips shut, sighing inwardly, but it was too late now to take them back.
"Er," he said. "That is to say...I need a bit of help....with...certain things."

Well. That was a bit unexpected. Gale didn't seem they type to be a skirt chaser but- The guy wanted to pick a girl up Marcus wasn't going to stop him after all, having someone to be with was a blessing really. "Girls huh? Well I don't know if I can give the best advice, but I can certainly try you know? Why the sudden inquiry?" He smirked. "Getting a crush on another trainee?"
Modest teasing, no one was really ever exempt from it. Sitting down, Marcus motioned him to sit as well. "You said talk to girls then 'certain things'. You realize that some guys will take that as 'I want to learn how to talk my way into a girl's pants right? I mean, if you want that that is cool I won't stop you just have to be a bit less obvious then that is all." Leaning back he shrugged. "My teasing aside, what do you need help with, whatever your reasons, I will try to help you with what you need."

The offhanded "getting a crush on another trainee?" comment made Gale's face turn a shade of red similar to that of a fire engine. He cleared his throat uncomfortably and turned his head away, arms folded across his chest.
He may also have been pouting a little.
But just a little.
"No," he said forcefully, though it was blatantly obvious that this was a total and complete lie. A certain someone's face came into view in his mind, but Gale quickly pushed it aside.
"...maybe," he mumbled after a moment, a bit sullenly. He twiddled with his gloves again.
"...and no, that's not what I want," he added hastily a moment after that, realizing just what Marcus had said. "I mean, I want - wait no, not, er, that, but just...how to talk to girls properly. Or rather, how...to...flirt..."
This last part was muttered so quietly it was barely audible, Gale's face reaching volcanic levels. He sighed again, pushed his fringe of bangs away from his face, and finally turned to look at Marcus.
"I have no idea how to talk to girls, and even though I'm only sixteen and one of the youngest hunters in here, I feel it would be beneficial to learn how to...er...well, yes."
Clearly this was a rehearsed speech.

Well s**t son. Marcus wasn't that sure how well this would work out but- he said he would try so try he will. Judging by Gale's reaction he did have a crush, but, it was likely he'd not say who. No matter, if the guy was good he'd know from the gossip soon enough. It was a small island after all. "It's okay you know. To have a crush, I mean, we're all prone to them. Or to want to get into a girl's pants, not my place to judge. BUT-" Patting Gale back he smiled. "I can do my best. First off though, have you ever kissed a girl? Been on a date? Or nothing at all. I need to know the basics here Gale."

The scowl Marcus received was really very unavoidable.
"Easy for you to say, you have Cass," grumbled Gale, rolling his eyes as he made his way over to the other's bed and sat down on the edge, folding his arms across his chest. "And no, I've never kissed a girl. Or been on a date."
The scowl grew more pronounced, Gale's thoughts shifting to his living situation before he had become a hunter.
"Never really found time."

Scowl harder Gale and your face might get stuck like that which no girl would find attractive. "Easy for me to say because I never had any problems with talking to girls. Well no big problems at least. I was just really lucky when it came to Cass." Very lucky indeed.
Rubbing his chin, Marcus thought about ways to go about this. The guy had zero experience. This was going to be fun. "Well, is there a girl you would feel comfortable talking to? I mean, you don't have a crush on someone like Julie, or, Clarice right? Because if you do, I think you should cut your losses on those. Plenty of other girls. Less crazy and less connected to the Doctor ones." Sorry Clarice, as nice as you were...Gale was probably not good. Too young. And he probably wouldn't survive being in the life labs.
"Our first goal then, aside from helping you talk to girls, is getting you a date."

"Yes, well," said Gale, a tad more grumpily than he intended. "That might also be because most girls probably treat you as a guy, not their kid brother."
He lifted his gaze to meet Marcus', then lapsed into a musing silence.
"Er," he said, then rolled his eyes. "No, it is most definitely not Clarice or Julie. They're...not really my type."
Whatever his "type" was.
"She's...a bit older than me," he said delicately, then flushed, looking away. "And it won't ever work out."
He knew this, of course, but it didn't stop him from giving Marcus a slightly suspicious look.
"A date with who exactly?"

Marcus chuckled, and no, it wasn't at your pain Gale. "Well, do you act like a kid brother, or do you act like a guy who's interested in spending some 'quality time' alone with a girl?" He used finger quotes when speaking. Mostly since 'quality time' was 'questionable time' on the hunter island.
"And good. if they were your types I'd think you a masochist. And she's older and it won't work out?" He grinned. "I'm older than Cass and we're still together. Age... Doesn't matter much I suppose. I mean Julie did send us to get booze of all things. And as for a date with who-"
Scrolling through his contacts he picked out a few names. "Well, there is Reine, Ennea, Madison, Ceres, Eva-" He smiled. "But first talking to girls. Step one? Don't be fake. Girls hate that stuff. They might not like an honest guy 100%, but they will hate a liar. Fastest way to break up is lying."

The look he gave Marcus was vaguely suspicious.
"I act how I always act," he said with a slight frown, absently tugging on a stray strand of his hair.
There was a slight pause.
"Should I be acting differently?"
<< Oh my Jack, you are worse than I thought. Where have you lived, under a rock? Good grief. >>
Gale studiously ignored this, his cheeks flushing red again. "She's...well, she's not ever going to see me the way I want," he said quickly, waving a hand. "I mean, I can't...see it working out, but I mean..."
He trailed off, feeling stupid, and the red grew deeper.
"I don't know Reine, Madison, or Ceres well enough to think of them that way," mumbled Gale - which left Ennea and, well...
"...it's Eva."
This was said so quietly it was barely audible. Though the expression shifted a little, Gale's brows furrowing at the question.
"I don't really have a habit of lying, so I think we're good on that front."

Okay, he couldn't help but bust out laughing at that. "Oh man. I'm sorry but, then you need to relax and realize, you say you act normal but you're just talking to me about this and your face is a tomato." Wiping his eyes Marcus shook his head smiling. "I'm not try to poke fun at you I swear, but I think you're over thinking it. Girls- they like honesty, they like to know how we feel and how they make us feel. They like to hear compliments when we mean them and they like the small times when we'll do something for them not because we want in their pants but just because we want to make them happy."
Leaning back he went on. "Step two, don't talk to her like she's 'a girl' talk to her like she's just another person. I mean, obviously you throw in a compliment here and there, Talk about shared interests, casually invite her to join you on said shared interest and bam." Finger snapped in the air. "Date set."
Picking up his phone again, he smirked. "Or...I can set you up. You're a hunter who is supposed to be fearless after all." The text was just waiting to be typed and sent.

"I'm aware of that," said Gale testily, his face growing redder. "And I..."
Then he trailed off, feeling slightly stupid.
"Look, I..." he said quietly, looking down at his hands. "I'm not used to this, okay? I've never been good with girls. Haven't got the skills most people have - and I suppose I just never got the chance to try and get a proper girlfriend - or even just a kiss. And it's not like this place - " Gale waved a hand at the room. " - is going to be a proper place for me to exactly find 'love,' or the concept of it. Everyone here is older than me."
<< And taller. >>
Shut up.
Staring at the phone in Marcus' hand, Gale's expression had gone back into the closed off one he wore when he did not wish to have anyone know exactly what he was thinking.
"She'll say no," he said quietly. "I know when I have a chance of things - and this is one of those times when I don't."

Marcus suddenly felt sad for Gale. He was the youngest hunter on the island, pretty much anyone of the girls was guaranteed to be older than him. Damn it just- Gale, you poor man. Well. Not a man yet you still a virgin but hopefully not forever. Nobody wanted to die a virgin. Maybe he could score that way? Nah that was cheap. Love was rich-
Deep breath and Marcus nodded. "It's a bit of a trail by fire Gale. Kind of like the candidate thing yeah? You have to go balls out to get what you want. And yeah wait no I don't mean- literally just- ugh." Man now he was fumbling all over. "You know what life is? It's a b***h. And you have to take what it dishes you and accept it. But sometimes Gale, you can tell life to go ******** itself and you can do what you want. Sure, sometimes it can blow up in your face but if you never take that chance? You'll never know. Sometimes you come out and make life your b***h. Who gives a ******** about age?"
Not him obviously.
"I am going to make you face life Gale. For your own good." He suddenly began to type something into his cell phone.

Gale lapsed into a sort of musing, stoic silence as he looked at Marcus. The older hunter was...extravagant in a way - not in a flamboyant sort of way, but in the way that he was just rather...blunt about everything. But Gale supposed that was part of the reason he didn't mind him - because with Marcus, there was no pussyfooting around anything. He told you what he thought straight up, and that was that.
"Everyone gives a s**t about age," said Gale dryly. "Just because you're....er, different in that regard doesn't mean everybody else is as well."
Which was made blatantly obvious by the fact that most of the other female hunters merely regarded him as a kid. It was not that they were being patronizing (for the most part), but that they simply...couldn't
He eyed the phone suspiciously.
"What, may I ask, are you doing?"
