He was in the market to buy food of all things. Granted it was to outshine his staff and their food drive efforts but- he was going to do casually. The market was packed, the sounds of people rushing to get last minute ingredients and meals filling the store. One sound stood out to Marlo, one voice above the crowd.
Jada.
Like a shark to blood he began to follow the sound of her voice, talking to herself. One isle over, looking at- oh ******** what she was loking at, she was giving him a great view of her a**. Did that woman have no sense of decency? Rounding the isle, he stood at the end, watching her, waiting for her to notice. He might not do public spats- but he would get his private one.

Jada was scowling at brownie boxes, trying to decide what kind she wanted. She was supposed to be using them in a sundae, and she already had vanilla ice cream and chocolate syrup in her basket. French-tipped nails tapped against the floor, and she finally selected one of the boxes. It was expensive, but wouldn't that just make it tastier? And maybe with the fact they were dark chocolate, she wouldn't notice if she burned them.
Now. She stood, intending to make her way to the canned food isle. She needed to pick up some things to donate to the charity. She had been donating time, but time wasn't going to win her any time on TV! Not that she needed it, anyway.
She moved to the end of the isle, turning and blinking at the person she bumped into. "Oh! I'm sorry!" She didn't look up, she didn't look the person in the eye, especially not as she was almost immediately jostled in another direction. Ugh! Couldn't these people all look where they were going? She was short, not invisible. Eyes on her shopping list, she rounded the corner and was almost run over by someone else with a shopping cart. She cursed under her breath, and slipped past someone else, apologizing briefly.

She didn't notice him at first. In fact, she didn't notice him at all, eyes fixed of her little list than on her surroundings. Growling to himself as she walked away he followed her. It was only as she moved to stop at another spot that he figured it was time to confront her.
A simple grab of her sleeve and a whisper by her ear. "Cara." If that didn't get a reaction he didn't know what would.

Corn, or carrots? And would buying bigger cans be a sneakier way to get a box full for cheaper? Green beans, check. Oh- she needed some soup, too. Green Bean Casserole was a staple of the holiday season. But would they accept french onions? She didn't remember.
Her mind was full of little things. One of the cans was open, and she wrinkled her nose, wiping the juice off on her jeans. Standing back up, she tugged the bottom of her top back down, and then-
A tug on her sleeve, and a whisper in her ear. Cara. She jumped, spinning and staring into ice-blue eyes. "Marlo! What a... surprise to see you here." She hadn't seen him since... Halloween. Well, except for the time she had been a cat- but he couldn't know about that. "And looking for canned food? I thought you liked to do everything the hard way. Homemade, that is."

Surprise on her face? Worth it. "A pleasant surprise I hope. I was looking for some thing but I found something better." Her. A tug on her sleeve towards the door. "Buy your things and let's go. We need to talk, I won't have our dirty laundry in the air-"
Now time to listen-"Scylla, my one night stand kitten." He was going to have that conversation. Marlo was not going to be denied. He wouldn't allow it.

"It's definitely a surprise." Pleasant? She wasn't quite sure. "What were you looking for?" she tried to stall, deciding to add a few more things to her shopping list. "I don't know where we'd be going to air our laundry. I didn't even know we had any."
Jada tried to tug away from him, to move in another direction- who cared if it was the direction she had already been in?- but his next words stopped her.
Scylla? How- How did Marlo know? Did he know? "Did you get a cat?" she could feel her face going pale, but desperately clung to her composure. "What an interesting name for her."

Where as he'd been holding her sleeve, he now had her wrist. "Don't lie to me Cara." Fishing in his pocket with his free hand he pulled it out. Castor's collar. "We are going to talk. I was willing to let it remain unspoken after I took you to the hospital, but after that night?" He hissed at her. "We need to talk. Do not make this difficult Jada." Her actual name, he was done playing 'nice'. Pulling her with him he was going to the shop front. "We are buying your things, leaving, and we will talk about this." He was getting growly with her. Pulling her towards the store front, he didn't relent.

Jada winced as the hand on her arm moved to her wrist, clenching. It didn't hurt, persay, but it was uncomfortable. "I haven't lied to you." she protested. And it was true. Unless you counted lying through omission, or playing stupid. She had done that a lot.
But then Marlo pulled out Castor's collar, and the heiress felt her blood freeze in her veins. "What do you mean, you took me to the hospital?" She was genuinely confused. Which night? The night she'd almost-
It was almost refreshing to have him use her name for once, instead of whatever the hell Cara meant. Even if he spat her name, more than anything. The tug on her wrist wasn't painful, but it definitely made her almost stumble in her heels as he dragged her and her cart forward and towards the shopping lanes. "Marlo, I'm not done shopping." It was a weak, token protest- she had been mostly done shopping. "I'm not going anywhere with you, not when you're this angry." She didn't have much of a choice. "And we're not going to talk, you're going to yell at me again, and I'm not going to put up with it! I swear I'll yell back."

God, they probably looked like an abusive couple, (they were in many ways). "Try the night that the youma went on a rampage, and I found you close to death you would have bleed out on the road." His was a gut wrenching thought even now. She had almost died and he's be helpless to stop it. All he could do was hope he's made it on time. Marlo never wanted to have that feeling again.
"You're done shopping for now. Whatever else you need you can get later. We are not going to stall. And I and not angry Jada." He took a deep breath. "Hurt, upset, but not angry. Not yet at least." If she kept up with her protests, he might become angry very easily. "If you yell back that is fine, I'd prefer it to you running away from me." At the checkout, he began to place her items and his own on the belt, pulling cash out to pay for it all. "I won't hear an argument Jada. We need to talk about this mess."

Jada blinked, letting Xanis guide her through the market. "You?" She couldn't remember anything about the night; well, not about the end of it. She vaguely remembered, of late, being stabbed. But not how she'd gotten to the hospital. Not anything...
Why was she letting him boss her? Probably because she didn't want to make him angry- not in public, anyway. "I don't know what right you have to be hurt or upset, Xanis." Xanis- not Marlo. Distance, neutrality.
At the checkout, as he set her items down with his, she opened her mouth to protest. Closed them. "We need to stop by the drop-off for the food drive. I made some purchases." He was putting both of their purchases on the belt, and she plopped down a divider to separate the two orders. She could pay for her own things, damnit. "And I suppose we have two different opinions on what a mess is, don't we."
A mess was definitely what she would call the status of her relationship with him. Relationship- hah! Ruined friendship. And was it his fault? Or hers? Regardless? It was a mess, and there wasn't a simple way to fix it. He had feelings for her that she wasn't in a position to reciprocate right now, not really. And god, if he'd figured out she was the cat, he might be angry that she'd let him talk to her so frankly.
So... what was he going to want to talk about?

She wanted to be independent? Fine. He would let her be. "You kept a secret from me. One that just-" He glared at the cashier who was staring at them. "Look we will discuss it elsewhere." Paying for his things and waiting for her to pay for hers, he knew he was being all the things she hated.
"That is fine. We can stop on the way to our apartment." He figured she would feel safer there. "And as far as mess you can tell me just what you think is a mes and then I can tell you why I think we are the biggest mess in Destiny City." That part was for her ears only.
Their things paid for, he guided her to his car. "Get in. Tell me what drop point for the food drive you want to stop at." He had her alone- but nothing yet.

Yes, she wanted to be independent. And it was intensely satisfying when Marlo backed the eff up and let her be. Jada smiled at the cashier, giving the blonde an arch look out of the corner of her eye. If she knew what he was thinking, she wouldn't be smiling so sweetly at the nice, staring cashier. She'd probably even be doing the one thing neither of them really wanted to.
Making a scene.
He was irritating her, and making her nervous. He just kept... showing up, and he had talked to her, as a cat, like 'creampuff' was property, not a person. Szelem had done one thing, and that was instill a sense of worth, if not too much of a backbone. He had made her feel cheap, not loved, and now he was acting... It made her uncomfortable. She wasn't even sure if she wanted to let him in her apartment, but she would. And since he knew she was Scylla?
She'd kick his a** up and down the pretty concrete stairs outside if he made her mad.
Biggest mess in Destiny City. There wasn't even a joke in that. She followed him to his car, carrying her own bags in an added touch of the defiance that was building up the more she geared up for this fight. "Get in please." She loaded her bags in his car, and glared at him. "And I don't care which one. The closest is fine."

Well that was so easy it might have called for an easy button. There was a small noise at he saying where ever was closest. Done and done, Marlo quickly drove by a bank, dropping the food in a collection bin he got back in the car, speeding off to her apartment. Only, he stopped short.
Parking in an empty lot he doubted she felt safe but-
"Why do you hate me?" It was a simple thing to ask, but a possibly difficult thing to answer. "You loved me and I was an idiot, and when I finally am able to reproach your feelings I am still a fool. What along the line made you hate me to the point you avoid me?"

She was silent as he drove, silent as she sorted out the donated food from the things she needed for herself. She let him carry them to the collection bin, waiting in the car. She could have gotten out and walked. She probably should have.
He drove towards the house, and then pulled over. It was a parking lot, mostly deserted, and she felt much better than taking him to her home. Or going to his. Not many people were around, but that would just make it easier to fight. And she didn't have to worry about her cat attacking Marlo and getting kicked in the face.
"I don't hate you." The answer was prompt, requiring no thought. "I loved you, and you were a coward- not an idiot, just a coward. And now you love me, but I don't feel the same. Not in the way I used to. I avoid you because..." she paused, taking a breath.
She needed to choose these words carefully. Candidly. She needed to be honest... but she still... still wanted to be... She didn't want to hurt him. Not after everything he had done for her, and admitted to her.
"I avoid you because I tried to tell you this once before, and you just got angry. I'd rather avoid you and wait until you cool off than fight with you. I avoid you because I am a coward, but I value the friendship I felt we had gotten to. Between when you left, and... when I chose my duty over my family."
He knew what she was talking about. The night she had given him a call and said, 'I need your help.'

Hands gripped the steering wheel tightly. "Being a coward id being an idiot." Not looking at her, he went on. "Why wouldn't I have gotten angry? You the first damn person in my life I wanted and for a time wanted me back." He didn't share much in the past, and supposedly, he was opening up but she- She had torn him open. "Jada, do you know why I began to call you Cara? A name that was in a language I knew you didn't understand?" His hand had let go, snaking over to her's. "It was the only was I felt safe, even if it wasn't true. You knew Giovanni. The second I found happiness, he took it away. I was- That night at your debut, I realize how- how I wasn't the man your family wanted. The kind of man you deserved. I hated the thought of those fat old men leering at you. I hated the fact that if Giovanni had been there, he'd have made an offer. Hell Jada, I found he made several offers to your mother to be able to have you. The only reason why was because I had fallen in love with you."
It had devastated him, driven him into a rage to the point he'd shut down the funds. "How do you think I felt when I held your near dead body as you went from senshi or the woman I loved? I was terrified that I would lose you. That when I realized that I wanted to tell you, I wanted you back in my life. That even after I pushed you away I still loved you." The click of the buckle and he moved his body half over her own.
"Please Jada, just stop running away from me. I-" He was unsure. "I want to be able to call you mine. My girlfriend. My lover. My woman. So many things. I want you by my side. Under me, over me, around me. I want you so much that when you run from me it hurt." A faint whisper. "You hurt me so much yet I still want you so much."
