The drop point today had been requested. One of his staff had found out that once upon a time Marlo had volunteered at a soup kitchen and had enthusiastically told him to go drop off today’s donations there. He could have just dropped the food off anywhere, but he knew his staff. They were like hawks. Jackals even. One show of weakness, one mistake and they would be one him. Plus he hated making a liar out of himself, there was that too.

A bag filled with enough pasta, canned veggies, and sauces to probably make a suitable weapon if flung into someone’s face. As he entered the dining area and got ready to drop off the goods and go- “Marlo! It’s been a while- how have you been? Here to volunteer again? One moment let me get you an apron-“ Ye gods that supervisor kitchen lady was awful. Presumptuous. Practically dragged back into the kitchen, he was told to being opening the cans and bring some sauces to a boil.

He just wanted to go back to his office and do paperwork.

A soup kitchen really wasn't Lydia's sort of scene. Before the Surrounding she had been a spoiled, single child, and she had liked it that way. After though, when she'd been forced to give that life up for another, she'd gotte. A little bit of a reality check. She'd been homeless, for all of a minute, but she had never felt so utterly lost before in her life. Call it meladrama, but it had an effect.

There was also Grant's influence. He was way too nice, not just for her, but in general. Call it circumstance, destiny, what have you, but despite the fact that she wouldn't normally be attracted to someone so down right squeaky clean, she was crazy about him.

That was how she found herself in an apron storing soup. She wanted to impress the young man, but more then that, she wanted to help the people that really didn't have a home to return to. What she had felt in those few brief moments, they were still feeling. If a bowl of warm soup and a hardy meal could brighten their day just a little, well, Lydia was happy to help.

She looked up as someone new entered the kitchen, ginger brows arching gently as she watched the supervisor shove an apron into the guy's arms and direct him towards a task. He didn't look all that happy to be there, and she stiffed a giggle against the back of her hand before resuming her stirring.

He just... looked at the cans like they had offended him. Like they were the ones responsible for him being stuck in the soup kitchen. Damn soup. Damn head cook... chef... woman. This is why Marlo liked staying in his office. less agitation from people like- just people. A deep breath to calm down. The woman was just... enthusiastic.

Another look at the task set before him. A glance to his watch and- giggling? "Pardon?" Looking over, a young woman seemed to have just returned to work. Wonderful, even soup kitchen volunteers could tell he wasn't suited for this place. "I am a many who works in an office, not a kitchen." He still began to open cans. "Plus I am far too picky about what I serve people." Chili in a can.

The memories.

He glanced her way, and she smiled at him despite his assurance that he was an officer worker and not a chef. It seemed important that she know that, though she wasn't sure why. "And if we're sharing, I'm a tech savvy cello player, not a cook." She brought up a heaping scoop of the cream of potato soup she was stirring, then tipped the spoon so the contents poured slowly back within the pot. "That doesn't really have much to do with why we're here though, does it?"

"I'm going to go out in a limb here and guess you didn't come here to volunteer." He was probably here to make a donation, a lot of big businesses did. That didn't explain how he'd gotten shuffled back here to the kit hen though. Sure the supervisor was over bearing and over zealous, but Lyds was pretty sure she wasn't in the habit of dragging poor, unsuspecting businessmen back here to do her bidding. That smacked a little too hard of kidnap.

"So how'd you get roped into helping out back here?" Her soup simmering nicely, Lydia brushed her hands along he apron and stepped away from the steam kettle.

Socially Awkward penguin meme moment. Shuffling a bit in unease, Marlo kept his hands busy opening the cans- and then going to wash his hand because he realize he hadn't. Now who was the idiot? "I volunteered here once. Realized I am overly critical and a cynic. I cam back to drop things off for my work because my staff are lazy. The woman in charge? She knew and well-' He dried his hands off. "She is overly enthusiastic."

Returning to the cans he opened the last two before making a small sound of displeasure. "They don't even have oregano." Clearly, the lack of herbs was a issue.

Lydia folded her arms, weight shifting to rest on one hip as she listened. He was an interesting fellow, and she found herself chuckling at the lack of sufficient spices and his reaction to it. "You're right, it's no five star kitchen, but it is better then nothing." Thin shoulders rolled, and she glanced back towards her simmering soup, checking to make sure it wasn't boiling over. "This place runs on volunteers and donations, it's a wonder they have food enough to serve the homeless at all, let alone spices."

She wasn't chastising, merely stating a fact. It would have been lovely if they could have provided the poor folk of Destiny City with more then just the basics, but that unfortunately took more revenue then the shelters were currently pulling in.

"I'm not much for this place either, it's depressing," not to mention a bit ripe out in the cafeteria.. "But I have an inkling as to how those people feel." She shrugged again. "Besides, my boyfriend is nearly saintly with his volunteer work lately, and I was feeling guilty." Honesty, we has it. She extended a hand as she proceeded to introduce herself. "I'm Lydia."

Marlo liked his five star kitchen. He liked it very much, about the same as a professional chef might. That was mostly because he just like having the best. He was a snob like that. And spoiled. "....I have a general lack of forgiveness for bland food." He sighed heavily. "Salt and pepper. They could at least add a little garlic or rosemary. Even a mint leaf or two." Now he was just being unrealistic.

"Sorry. Marlo." he shook her hand. "I am terrible at these sorts of things. 'Picky' as my friends would say." Friends? He had them? Apparently so. "Its a good cause that I can't discount, but good lord if it doesn't make me feel pity."

That's right Marlo. You might have no idea what they felt, but you certainly could pity the fact their food was to you, terrible. "Any chance there is a back door which I can escape from?" He looked at the head chef. "I have to get back to my office. Soon as well, lest my staff find have another brilliant idea such as '******** with the computers to change the layout' again." He muttered under his breath. "Every year-"
