Though several days had passed, Jett still wasn’t taking his relationship with Raven seriously. It had been somewhat forced, though he certainly wasn’t suffering. They chatted through texts though this would have been the first time they were actually meeting up. Due to the weekend and Jett occasionally skipping classes, he hadn’t seen Raven since then—and he figured that dropping by, unannounced, on her door step seemed perfectly fine.

At least now he was being romantic.

He had parked his car in the driveway next to Raven’s, quite pleased that neither of her parent’s cars were there. Not that he didn’t like her parents or anything (actually, he didn’t care for them at all), but they were kind of creepy. He opened was quiet when he exited his car and closed the door; he wanted this to be a surprise. Walking over to the passenger’s side, he drew out the little basket he’d kept safe and snug and strapped in.

He had gotten his paycheck and desperately needed to blow it before Millie tried to get him to go shopping with her again—and since you weren’t supposed to spend more money on any other girl than your girlfriend (unless it was your mother because your mother deserves the best of everything), he decided to splurge on Raven.

It was a carefully planned out splurge, however; Jett had been thinking of a good gift to give her for a while—Christmas was coming up—and he was still trying to pamper her with little gifts and trinkets since it was so much harder to apologize.

He’d thought of lots of things—shoes, dresses, purses, makeup, chocolate, jewelry…all the things you could give a girl. But there were problems with all of this. He didn’t know her shoe or dress size, didn’t know what purses she liked, didn’t want to give her the wrong impression by giving her makeup, didn’t want her to get fat with chocolate, and wasn’t willing to spend so much money on jewelry he didn’t know if she’d ever even wear.

Which left Jett conflicted—until he passed the pet store on the way to lunch after a short day at work. Usually there were little kitties or puppies that he might glance at but otherwise paid little mind to, however this time, he stopped. And stared.

A tiny little dog with reddish brown speckles was crawling atop a pile of what he assumed were it’s siblings. He watched as the little beast stepped and squashed the others with no remorse, and then when it flopped down atop the pile to sleep.

Jett liked that dog.

Sure, it wasn’t the type of dog he would have gotten for himself, but, then again. He wasn’t shopping for himself.

A twenty minute conversation with the woman working had him walking out of the door, dog tucked under his arm. He’d learned from the woman that the dog was female—a Red Sable Parti Cocker Spaniel—and only a few weeks old. It was friendly enough and seemed to like humans far more than its own brethren. The puppy was of good temperament—very friendly and willing to be coddled and squeezed. And dressed up in stupid outfits, Jett learned when the woman trying to sell her put her in a silly little Christmas outfit.

It was so perfect that Jett bought her, dinky little outfit and all.

There were little things that he grabbed—a five pound bag of food, some treats, a chew toy, collar, leash.

It wasn’t as expensive as he’d imagined—thank goodness for holiday sales—and, pleased with this purchase, he’d skipped lunch and instead driven to her house. There was no reason to ask her if she wanted a dog—she’d mentioned it last month (or something, he couldn’t really remember)—and even if she had changed her mind, there was no way she could resist the dog, who stared at Jett with large, watery eyes the whole ride over.

She was just as happy as he was to get out of the car; Jett scooped up the basket she was in, adjusted the little dress she was in, and shamelessly planted a big red bow atop her head. The rest of the supplies were in a plastic bag in his hand, but they were hardly as impressive as the dog. He closed the passenger’s door with his foot and walked with a brisk gate to Raven’s doorstep. When he arrived, he settled himself, gave the dog a look, and then rang the doorbell.

Raven hadn’t been expecting any guests. In fact, she hadn’t really been expecting much of anything, and was loafing around the house in a pair of sweatpants and a ratty old tee shirt that she had gotten from her cousin some hundred years ago or so. No, if Raven had known that Jett was coming she would have made sure to look her best. He was her boyfriend now…officially.

She made her way down the steps, pulling her long blonde hair back into a sloppy ponytail then opening the front door. She blinked upon seeing Jett. Oh…well, this made her look like a completely underdressed fool. Hm. Served him right though. He should have called, or texted or something.

“Oh hey there, Jett. What’s up?” She leaned against the door frame and looked him over. Hm. Well…what was that he had? A…a dog? It…it looked kind of adorable… “Hey, Jett…what’s that dog for? I wouldn’t…I didn’t take you for the ‘cute’ dog type…and really not as the type to carry your doggie in a cute little basket like that…And I really didn’t expect you to dress your animals up.”

She was curious now. What did he come here for? “Why don’t you come in?” The blonde moved aside, to let the male inside with the dog and the other bag in his hand.

Jett glanced Raven up and down, seeming even more amused with her attire. He somewhat eagerly stepped into the room, quite pleased with the idea of getting a look around her place. In all the years he'd known her address, he'd never come over--and now that they were dating, it seemed fitting that he should make himself at home. "I might be a dog person, but the truth of the matter is, I don't really like fluffy little dogs. See, I like bigger dogs. Loyal dogs, you know. The ones that'll drag your unconscious body out of a burning building. This dog," he glanced down at the little creature who was looking around the room with almost as much enthusiasm as he was.

"...No, this dog isn't quite my thing. Though, I couldn't help suspect that she might be yours."

He trailed off a bit, tearing his eyes away from the decor in the room so that he could look at Raven and assess her decision. He was leaving this dog here, no matter what she said, so she'd better be happy about it.

Raven seemed almost amused then reached into the basket, pulling the small dog out, cradling it. “She’s completely adorable…” She had wanted a dog…but her parents had told her that she would have to pay for it all herself...and she had figured that there was many more important things to buy…like clothes, or her car.

Cars were much more important than dogs…even adorable ones like this with droopy ears…She was a sucker for droopy ears…she always had been…She completely adored those floppy eared bunnies that looked so completely silly and adorable…

“So…why a dog, Jett? What a strange gift idea for me…what made you think of it? I mean, she’s perfect…I’ve honestly never seen a cuter dog. Thank you. Thank you very much.”

She was really excited to get to know the puppy…start training her…getting her more cute little outfits…oh yes. This dog would be going everywhere with her now. Her new best friend. She would keep this dog nice and safe, make sure she was always a happy puppy.

Jett's face lit up a bit to mimic Raven's; there was a small part of him that had been worried she wouldn't like the dog, or wouldn't want it--that she would have been angry at him for bringing her a pet and dropping by unannounced.

"Well, to be honest. I saw her and thought of you," Jett explained, relieved that he didn't have to worry about what to do with the dog now that Raven was accepting. He dropped the plastic bag down next to him, thinking that he never wanted to see them again for how much they had drained out of his pocket.

"See," he continued, wearing a somewhat cocky smile. "She's cute, like you. With the most beautiful eyes I've ever seen. For a dog, at least. You've still got her beat in that one. She's high maintenance. She looks good even when wearing something stupid. She loves wagging her tongue. She's got good taste in men. She's not afraid to climb over others to get what she wants." He donned a more playful look. "And she's every bit the b***h you are. I thought you'd make a perfect pair."

She couldn’t help it. With the compliments, Raven’s ego was swelling to easily three times its normal size, and that was making it very large indeed. She laughed, then blinked when he mentioned the b***h part, though that made her laugh all the louder, nearly dropping the puppy in her arms.

“What? Jett…what? She’s every bit the b***h that I am…do people really go around saying s**t like that? Really Jett?”

Raven just shook her head, laughing once more. Oh boy. He was fun. She always had an interesting time when Jett was around…and she liked that.

The blonde put the puppy on the ground and let it begin sniffing around, getting used to its new home, and Raven wrapped her arms around Jett’s neck, kissing him softly. “Thank you for my present. I’m really very happy with it…but, you can’t count this as my Christmas gift. It’s still far too early.”

Jett wrapped his arms around Raven's waist; he'd returned the kiss with a lazy sort of affection. He was glad that she'd liked the dog--and whether or not she was accepting, that damn dog was her Christmas present and he was not getting her anything fabulous. You couldn't top a puppy for Christmas, even if it was a few weeks early.

Surely Raven would understand that if he'd bought the dog and kept it at his place until Christmas, he might have gotten attached to it and wouldn't have wanted to give it up. Or, if he'd left it at the pet store, the sale would have ended! Or some other family seeking a puppy would have picked it up and taken it home, instead.

Jett leaned forward and planted a very small, chaste kiss atop her lips after taking a few seconds to consider her words. In the end, he just shrugged. "Eh. I'll get you a card or something."
