Danny had avoided him the whole week. The whole week. What else could she do? She couldn't just walk up and say "hey! You should like me!" It didn't really work that way to her knowledge. Now she knew how Roch felt when he was always whining about liking someone he couldn't. Suddenly his musings made one hundred percent sense.

Straight after her classes she had run straight to her dorm and entertained herself with cleaning, gaming, anything that she could do to keep her mind occupied.

It wasn't the most dramatic betrayal in the world, but Danny was a runner both physically and mentally. All of her problems were dealt with by avoiding and running away; it was like there was a button that said "RUNNN!" that was pressed every time she saw Rikki. Her chest would clench up all tight, and she just knew she couldn't stick around.

At the moment, she had shaken herself to sleep, and was laying quietly in her bed. Her breathing was shallow and harsh; clearly being haunted by nightmares that she so seldom got. It had been a rough week. Not the joyous return she thought she'd get.

There were back to this.

Really?

Hadn't he solved this problem the first time he'd had to come to her room all pissed off?

Danny had been avoiding him all week. He could tell because every time he'd try to meet her gaze after class she's go tearing off, presumably to her room. That's where Rikki headed now, dressed in jeans, boots, and a wife beater. No way was he going to let the demoness put this distance back between them when he'd been trying his damnedest to get rid of it.

When he reached her door he didn't pause to knock like he normally did. He wouldn't give her the chance to turn him away this time. Instead he turned the knob quietly and stalked into the room in silence, peering around corners as he tried to find her. It didn't take much looking because she was on her bed. Asleep... and appeared to be having nightmares.

The hard, angry part of him uncurled a little, softening, and he sighed. How could he stay mad at a girl having nightmares? Instead of demanding answers from her like he had planned he slipped onto the bed and brushed her hair from her eyes. "Wake up, Danny," he cooed softly. "You're having a nightmare."

Danny's eyes squeezed open, and at first, the sight she found greeted her quite nicely. Rikki's face was so close to hers, and he was brushing her hair so softly and nice. It was like a dream. Maybe she hadn't woken up. The faintest smile crossed her face, warm and fuzzy.

Then the drowsiness wore off and she realized what was happening. She turned over in her bed and pulled the covers over her head. Why was he here? And why was he treating her so nicely? Surely he had to go spend time with his precious Edel. Stupid witch, stealing all of her friends; even the friends that were becoming a bit... more.

"Go away," she said bluntly, running away again, like always.

And just like that, the anger snapped back, boiling hot.

"Go away?" He repeated, his voice just a touch louder than it probably should have been. "What the hell. Maybe I really should just go away. But I won't." He put his hand on what he presumed to the the lump of her shoulder and pulled with a gentleness that seemed to outside this anger that he was carrying. "Dammit, Danny, turn and look at me. You're not running and hiding again."

He got up from the bed and crossed the room to lean his back against a wall, at least relenting enough to give her some space. Never let it be said that Nyyrikki was not generous. (... okay he wasn't). "At least tell me why you're mad at me."

"Go away just go away," Danny moaned, shaking under her covers already. All the heartache she had been avoiding for the week was coming down on her just hearing his voice and feeling his touch. She did not want this. She didn't want it at all.

The shaking grew more apparent. With a strained voice, she cried out, "Just go be with your stupid Edel!" If Danny could've cried, she would be in tears. Her chest hurt so much it was unbearable.

If she would've been honest with herself, she would've wanted Rikki right next to her, petting her hair softly and telling her more nice things, but she knew that time was over. Rikki like Edel and there was nothing she could do about it. Of course. Danny wasn't the one he chose. Of course.

"I'm not going away," he stated, crossing his arms over his chest to prove his stubbornness. He was staying right here.

But she surprised him and his face cleared, fading into an expression of shock. Edel? He'd only seen Edel once, when they'd practiced their parts in the play's music together. Why was Danny yelling at him and calling Edel his? "Wait. Isn't Edel with Moure...?" He was missing something, and that confused him. "I'm not even friends with Edel. I've met her like once. What are you talking about?"

He didn't like hearing her sound so stressed. He wanted to comfort her and make that broken tone in her voice go away. But, he was still angry.

Oh and now he was trying to lie his way out. Sure Edel may have been dating Moure, but this was high school. Ghouls were leaving boils for other boils all the time. It was in all the movies; even Danny could comprehend the idea of affairs.

It didn't make her any less miserable. "I saw you," she wheezed out between a sobbing mixture of gasping and choking, "I saw you with her in the music room." The shaking hadn't stopped. "You two just looked so happy," she finished coldly.

The worst part was that all she could do was picture the scene over and over again. She had been so happy to finally be able to understand, comprehend and repeat her emotions to another person. So happy to have a chance with Rikki, however slim. Well it looked like she got the tails side of the coin. Now look where she was.

But... Danny hadn't been there. Had she?

He felt like he'd done something horribly wrong, but he knew he hadn't. He'd practiced a song, that was it.

"Yeah, that was the one time I've really met her," he said, sounding sort of exhausted. He pinched the bridge of his nose. "We were practicing the music that Roch is having us do for the school. He's forcing me to do the drums so he doesn't have to work with the gnomes. You'd be happy too if you were playing guitar." Running a hand through his already messy hair, he sighed. "What's going on Danny?"

It was starting to get rather claustrophobic under the blanket. Sure it was a great cover, but having the blankets pulled so tightly, so close while she was sobbing so hard- it was getting hard to breath. So she poked her head out, still refusing to look at Rikki. Her eyes were shut and she was turned away from him.

So then they weren't dating? A ripple of happiness ran down her spine. It was such a relief to know that Rikki wasn't dating her. It had scared her more than anything during her vacation- even Oersted.

She took a moment or two to calm down, to the point where she could at least breath and said, "I was ... I texted you to come so I could tell you something." She started to shake a bit harder as the memory of it all came crashing down on her. She tried to focus again and failed, "And then Edel was there ... and you were..." A violent tremor racked her body as she relived the whole thing in her memory. Her explanation was done.

Nyyrikki threw a pillow at Danny's head.

It was one he'd scooped up from the floor, only allowing himself to throw it because it was soft enough not to hurt her. If she turned, his hands would be crossed high on his chest in what could only be described as pure male stubbornness. "We were playing instruments. That's it."

Danny was deep in thought when the pillow whacked her in the head. Pure reaction jerked her upright and facing the direction of her attacker, who was standing stubbornly with his arms crossed.

She wanted to yell and scream at him, but something in his eyes ... There was a seriousness in his eyes that Danny hadn't really seen before. Was he telling the truth? Danny's eyes turned from that of betrayal to that of understanding. She believed him. She had to.

Without words Danny sunk back down into her bed, but this time was different. It was exhaustion. She was tired of running away. Wordlessly, she opened her arms in a "come here" motion. It was an invitation, one which Rikki could accept or reject. The ball was in his court.

Relief. That was what made his shoulders slump and his arms fall to his sides. He was relieved, because he could tell she believed him. For good reason - he was telling the truth.

He was all too happy to go to her, though he could still feel the tight ball of anger in his chest. He laid in the demoness' arms, curling his body around hers and rest his head on the pillow beside her's. "I can't believe you thought I'd do anything with Edel," he grumbled, making a face. It wasn't that he didn't like Edel. She was okay-ish, but Danny was on of his best friends. She would be more (Yes, she would be, because Rikki was determined). That meant she came first.

He brushed her hair away from her forehead in a lazy movement like he had when he'd first come in. This felt good.

Danny's face was bright red with embarrassment. Hadn't she just revealed her secret to him? Her anger over Edel could only mean one thing after all. There were only so many things "don't like her" led to after all. Inevitably one of the options was "because I like you."

She didn't say anything as Rikki wrapped himself around her; instead she just enjoyed the moment. Getting here was exactly what she wanted. Rikki's body still felt oddly warm to her, for reasons she couldn't explain. Even Danny felt stupid for thinking she was sick earlier. How could she have been so dumb? It was practically embarrassing.

With his face so close to hers, and him petting her so softly, Danny couldn't help but give in to his boilish charms. "I like you," she said bluntly. Danny's one true virtue was her willingness to spout whatever was coming to mind.

And that was what he'd been waiting to hear. Those three words melted away the last of the anger and he smiled to brightly he thought his cheeks might fall off.

"I like you, too. You're one of my best friends." It was hard not to laugh as he teased her, knowing she'd get frustrated. But he couldn't help himself.

Danny's face fell. Was she being put in the friend category? She had heard about this from Roch. It wasn't any fun according to her best friend, and she definitely didn't want to spend time there. It was the sad corner.

Maybe he just didn't understand. Rikki wasn't all that smart either! Danny nodded almost to herself as if to say "okay, I'll make you understand!"

"N-no," she stammered, "I mean I like you like you." Could she be any less mature? What was this, kindergarten? "L-like um." Danny's face was bright red, as she knew what would convince him, but didn't want to do it. It was too embarassing.

Oh well. Jack da boogeymen. She was never one to hesitate; it just wouldn't be her style. Danny leaned in and kissed him right on the lips, just like Nahm had taught her.
