A prince, like his mom! Thunk. Strong, like his mom! Thunk. Amazing, like his mom! Wonderful, like his mom! THUNK. Dizzy, like his mom? Falling...like his mom?
Kouichi toppled over as he lost his balance to the sensation of vertigo that enveloped him. The training grounds where he met with the other foals for coaching from Revyra seemed to be dancing in front of his eyes. He was pretty sure that he was lying on solid ground but it felt more like he was bobbing around in water.
"My head..." He murmured closing his eyes wishing that the feeling would just go away. He had been practicing against a small sapling, they were good for aim and not quite as hefty as the fully grown tree trunks, but he'd run into it a little too hard that last time. Perhaps only training with his head hadn't been such a good idea. Revrya had taught them how to ram an opponent with your head the other day but she had broken that up with other types of training. Maybe there had been a reason for it after all?

Revyra paused on her patrol and cocked her head to one side listening. She could hear a sort of thunking sound coming from around the training grounds. That wasn't right. There was no training scheduled for the day. No one should have been near the grounds.
Her eyes narrowed suspiciously. This needed investigating. Quick as a flash she streaked off toward the training grounds mentally preparing herself for whatever was awaiting her. Or at least she thought she was preparing herself for everything. What she found managed to catch her completely off guard as she found herself staring at a foal flopped over.
For a moment she did nothing but look at the foal, one of Utena's sons. This one was Kouichi. He always paid close attention to her lessons but that didn't really explain what he was doing lying on the ground in the middle of a deserted clearing.
"Kouichi." She barked finally marching forward. "What are you doing here alone?"

A jolt shot through Kouichi at the sound of his instructor's voice. He was in trouble. Or at least he was fairly certain of it. There weren't any rules specifically banning coming to the training grounds without an adult present but that didn't mean he wouldn't get scolded for wandering off on his own. He rolled off of his side to lay with his legs folded beneath him before craning his neck back to see Revyra. She didn't look particularly pleased. Actually she looked a bit like how you might expect a bear to look after waking it from a nap.
"I was getting some extra practice in...ma'am." He answered remembering his manners at the last second. "I wanted to work on that head trick some more." His neck was beginning to ache from the unnatural angle so he decided to stand up. It was a task easier said than done. Sitting was all good and well but shortly after standing a wave of dizziness struck him again and he wobbled. "I think...I hit my head a little to hard that last time..." It was best to just tell Revyra the truth. Lying would only result in running laps for an eternity once she caught you. Somehow she always caught you.

Revyra wasn't sure if she should feel proud of him for wanting to train more or irritated that he was dumb enough to go off alone. For the moment she settled to live with the bizarre combination of the two and resisted the urge to cuff him with a wing. If he'd been the one making that noise with his head then smacking him again was not a particularly good decision.
"It will wear off." She said coming to a stop in front of the foal. She lowered her head and looked him over. There wasn't any blood on his coat, just some bits of tree debris that had decided to cling. Everything looked normal except for that clump of sap in his hair, getting that out was going to be an interesting experience for everyone involved. To be on the safe side she thought that maybe she should send him off to one of the herd healers. If it ended up being something serious she'd never hear the end of it for starters and she'd just generally feel unable to live with herself. No matter how strict she was a foal was still a foal. She was looking at the future right now and a brain dead future was not promising in the slightest.
"Now," she straightened up. "I suspect you know why I broke up the head butting with other techniques, correct?" If they didn't learn just from hearing her say it trial and error was generally an effective tutor.

"Yes ma'am." He said finally feeling the ache in his head begin to fade away. "So we wouldn't end up like me...right?" The pain was dying down but he was still hearing a rhythmic thudding. "It won't happen again." It was a promise he could make because he would certainly keep it. There was no way he ever wanted to feel his head spin like that again. The dizziness was gone now thankfully. He was able to stand without any troubles even though he'd be feeling that slight pain in his head for a while still. What was that thudding sound though? He hadn't heard it when he'd first hit the tree but now it was loud and clear. It also seemed to be growing in volume.
"Revyra, ma'am, I don't mean to worry you...but I'm hearing things." He said nervously. What if that meant he'd done more damage than he realized? What if he died from it?! "And they're getting louder..."

Good, the lesson had been learned. She didn't need to worry about him making the same mistake twice, not after this. He'd feel the bump for a few days and remember it for years to come. "I know you won't." She said extending a wing to brush against his hair gently. It was probably a good thing too. Kouichi's mother was one heck of a fighter. Revyra had never witnessed a horse wielding a human weapon before but now that she had she wasn't likely to forget anytime soon. It was not something she ever wanted to face herself.
"You're hearing things?" That wasn't a good sign. She swiveled her ears back and forth hoping to catch whatever it was he heard. It didn't take long until she found a likely culprit. "Those are footsteps Kouichi." She said assuming that's what he meant. "Two sets and not in any sort of rush from the sound of them." She didn't wait for the foal to run off and check before she moved herself. She suspected she knew who was coming their way but she wasn't about to put the kid in harms way. Once she reached the edge of the training grounds she looked out and saw a couple familiar figures in the distance. She was quite used to seeing one of them but the other caught her a little off guard considering that he usual skipped lessons.
"Kouichi, it's time for another lesson. Come here and tell me who you see. There a little ways off. Let's see how sharp your eyes are."

“Footsteps?” Now that Revyra had named the sound Kouichi realized that it couldn’t have possibly been anything else. “Oh...” He was glad his mother wasn’t here right now. He couldn’t imagine she’d feel particularly proud that he couldn’t even recognize the sound of footsteps from far off. Though...maybe she would be happy that he’d even heard them at all. Maybe having good hearing was worth praise? Yes, he supposed it would be worth some praise. He would have to tell his mother and Cappricia when he went back to them. He would just leave out the part where he nearly knocked himself unconscious first.
“Yes ma’am, of course I can.” He said as he darted over to the wind’s side. There was no way he was going to refuse a new lesson unless it involved flying. He looked out into the forest with squinted eyes trying to spot whomever Revyra had seen. It took him several moments but he finally spotted to soquili approaching them. One was white with a dark mane. Uh-oh. He knew two soquili that looked like that: Shrivatsa and Phala. Was Shrivatsa even back yet though? He put figuring that off for later and looked at the second. Pale blue. He looked dismayed. Practically half of one of the major families was pale blue. “Ummmm...” He started. “Well…that one’s either Phala or Shrivatsa…and...that one’s...either Nirvana or family...” He said feeling defeated. He would just leave out this particular failure as well.

Revyra tried not to be too disappointed that he hadn't pinpointed the duos identities. He was still a child and he hadn't quite learned to pick out the details yet. He'd develop that skill eventually. "You have a start but lets look more closely." She looked between the two and picked the easier one, the one with less options. "It is Phala or Shrivatsa you were right about that. Look at the hair though. Do you see how it is touching the shoulders? That means it's Phala. Shrivatsa has a shorter mane." She glanced down at her pupil to check that he was listening. He was so she proceeded.
"Now the other is a little trickier but you stopped short. At the side do you see those shapes? Those are wings, folded up. That leaves only a few options for that color. When you look at the mane color and length and the color of the wings it leaves only one: Vivace. Do you see how that works?"

Phala had returned from his visit to his sister quite some time ago to find out nothing in the herd had really changed. Revyra was still there. His cousins were all still mostly the same. The kids were still kids. And Phala still had no real place within the herd. Whether it was his own unwillingness to join in or others being unwilling to approach him Phala was uncertain. In the end it didn't really matter because whatever the reason he still had no place.
The closest he had found was Revyra. She didn't care where people stood in the herd. She'd train everyone and give them the same treatment.
Today he was trying to find the winged mare for more training and he had unfortunately picked up some unwanted company along the way. Phala couldn't understand or stand it. When he was a child that wanted company Vivace wouldn't come within twenty feet of him. Now that Phala was grown and would rather kick Vivace in the jaw the blue bird-brained stallion had decided it was the best time to hang around.
"Why are you following me?" He demanded to know not bothering to look behind. He knew Vivace was still there. He could hear him. He imagined people could hear him miles away. He hadn't stopped humming in the last hour.

Vivace hadn't quite picked up on the dour mood of his cousin. He was restless. He had just returned from one of his day trips out to see the sights and spread the joy of music and a happy life. Now that he was back everything felt stifling. There were words on the air that everyone knew but no one dared say. Vivace didn't even want to think about them and it was difficult to imagine them away when few seemed willing to ignore them with him.
Somehow this had brought him to Phala.
Phala was always grumpy, down-hearted and just downright unpleasant to be around. Sometime between coming home and now he had made it his mission for the day to get the sour-puss to smile a little. Efforts thus far had proven useless as the stallion had tried to lose him on more than one occasion.
"Why?" He parroted as he searched for an answer. He could tell Phala the truth but he knew how that would end. Phala would force a smile just to get him to leave. "Well, if you want honesty, I was bored." He said. It was close enough to the real answer to not stink like a lie. "You happened by and I thought I'd keep you company on your little trip~!"

He was bored. Phala should have known. Why else would anyone from that family bother with him? The answer would always either be pity or they had nothing better to do. "You leech." He snarled at Vivace before picking up his pace. He wasn't going to be someone's cure for boredom. He'd rather be alone.
"I'm not on a trip I'm going to train." He tried in a sort of last effort to ditch his tag-along. He knew how many training sessions the ice-flecked stallion had bailed on. They weren't even completely mandatory. Vivace would show up then change his mind half way through the lesson. It was like he got bored with it. He had no perseverance whatsoever. Things got a little unpleasant and he ran off.
Phala wasn't like that. He'd face down every challenge. Risk life and limb fighting. He was stronger than Vivace. He'd been born that way. Strong, dangerous, a fighter to the core. It was obvious how strong he was by how little company he kept. He didn't need anyone. He loved his sister and brother and that was it. That was all he needed.
Well, that and training.
They must have been getting close to the training grounds by now. The terrain was starting to look more run down from all the soquili walking about. When he looked up from the ground he discovered that there was someone looking back. Two someones actually. "Revyra." He said vaguely wondering how long she had been watching them. "Do you have time for training today?" It was best to get straight to the point. They both knew what he wanted anyway.

It didn't take Vivace long to figure out that he had picked the wrong half-lie to tell. It was just so difficult to deal with Phala. It seemed like all of his responses were completely backwards. You told him you thought he was nice and he got suspicious. Try calling him a monster and he smiled. Or, maybe he was baring his teeth? It was hard to tell. There was nothing easy about Phala. Nothing but pissing him off. That could be done without trying or even realizing it.
"Train? On a nice day like this?" He was being sarcastic. The day was painfully overcast. Not good flying weather. Not good anything weather except maybe cuddling. Really he just didn't want to train. They were mostly only training now because of the attacks.
He shook his head and sprinted off after Phala, the boy could really move when he wanted to. Vivace would have lost him an infinite amount of times if he were wingless. When he caught up he found Phala conversing with Revyra. The trainer. The constant reminder of what had happened and what was probably coming. It wasn't that Vivace disliked the mare, it was just that she was difficult to be around. He didn't want to think about it but it was hard to ignore with her around. She'd shown up after the first attacks and he didn't imagine she'd be leaving any time soon.
"You were serious?" He asked jaw dropping slightly. Of course he was. Phala was always serious. Serious and stubborn and lonely. "Do you ever do anything but train?"
