This is a private self-rp for Nisshou H's Zamyr and Margerie. No posting please.
((Note to self: this takes place after Ambien and Zamyr part ways. Please remember that ICly this happens around mid-March or I will have to punt myself...>> ))

"Yes...if you go to the river on the night of the full moon and drop three rounded white stones into its reflection you will soon find your true love in an unexpected place." It was a new day, a new visitor but the same basic routine. Margerie had been living in the land of giants since the summer months. It was nice to be away from her family but this place was not without its troubles. Most of those troubles came from beings twice her size.

For the first month or so barely a day had passed when she had not gone under threat of being kicked, stepped on or, on one day, eaten. It was the near eating that had sparked the idea in her mind. It was a simple idea, 'make yourself valuable' and so she had. She didn't have many skills but what she did have was perfect. It hadn't taken her long to determine that very few people had ever seen her kind before. She was more commonly mistaken for a kirin foal with unusual traits. Revealing what she was generally left people thinking she was quite fascinating and mysterious. These assumptions she used to her advantage.

The wisps at her feet? She began to call them "spirit flames." Her ability to walk lightly? Why, the spirits carried her of course. The soquili of this place were so gullible that they were eager to believe anything she told them just because they didn't know what she was. So she had become Margerie the mystic. The answerer of secret questions and the seer of things unseen. It was all a load of lies but if those lies were keeping her from being lunch than they were her new best friends.

He never should have done it. 'Just one more trip...' 'Have you ever seen a crystal cave? I hear there's one around here. It won't take long...' 'Oh, but I had one more place I thought you'd like to see...' He'd told her all of these things. His wishes were innocent enough, he had just wanted to spend more time with her. Her sister had been slowing them down, that's why he had done it. It wasn't like it had been some sort of sinister plan but his intentions didn't seem to matter. He had still done it, stolen her far away from her sister, and now she was gone.

To say that he was hurting would be an understatement. Still he carried on like nothing had happened at all. He met people. He heard their stories. He saw the sights. And he did all of this with a smile on his face. Zamyr kept trying to tell himself that it couldn't be helped now. Reassuring himself didn't have the effect that he had hoped for. He needed to move on.

That was why he had come back here, to the edge of the big oak groove. He had heard that some sort of soothsayer lived in these parts. Strictly speaking he didn't believe in things like fortune telling but if this soquili had some ideas he'd be happy enough to hear them. Based on the strange circular designs around the bases of the surrounding trees Zamyr was pretty sure that he had in fact come to the right place. Seeing a mare speaking eagerly to a small creature with a plumed tail only confirmed it.

"Madam soothsayer," he started as he made his way closer to the pair. "I suspect you know why I'm here already." He winced internally at the skepticism in his voice. It hadn't been intentional but it certainly wasn't the best way to start off.

The qui'lin turned to face the newcomer keeping her face even as she took in his strange appearance. He looked every bit like the child of a horse and a very large bird. The wisps at her feet began to flicker more and while it was easy enough to tell people that this mean the spirits were communicating with her she knew it meant that she was nervous. She had only seen a creature like him once and from a distance. That one had devoured a mouse without batting an eye. Whatever they were they were perfectly capable of eating meat. She just hoped that her little charade would impress him enough to keep her off the menu.

"Yes, traveler, you are here because you are troubled." She replied keeping her voice low and level. Exactly how the perfect voice for a mystic should sound. "I will be with you momentarily." She then turned back to her current visitor to conclude the meeting. "Remember what I have told you well and you will obtain what you most desire." She smiled at the mare and bowed her head slowly. "May the spirits be with you always." She listened patiently as the mare excitedly thanked her over and over again before finally departing. Young mares desperate for love were the easiest things to deal with. Give them some stupid ritual to perform and be especially vague and then let their hormones do the rest. Simple.

She turned to the stallion waiting for her attention. Less simple.

She nodded her head to signal him to approach and in the meantime she looked him over more closely. He was dirty, mud and dust coating anything below the knee. Everyone traveled to reach her so it made sense to call everyone a traveler when first meeting them but this one seemed to have come from further away. His unusual breed was mostly unknown in these parts even more so than her kind. "You've come such a long way to get here..." She said keeping golden eyes locked on him. "But you didn't come here to see me...no...your journey here was a recent choice." He'd made that obvious enough with his doubting words.

She met his eyes for a moment. They were sad eyes. That wasn't right. If he was a skeptic here to find her out than his eyes should have been full of irritation, mockery or even anger. "Something has happened that hurt you deeply. Am I right?"

So far she seemed exactly like he had been expecting except for a few details. She was shorter for one thing and she had unusual black smoke whirling about around her ankles. At least it looked like smoke. Or maybe it more closely resembled fire. He wanted to get a closer look at them but that would have to wait for another time. He still had business to deal with and, evidently, so did she.

"Take your time." He replied content enough to just watch her for a bit and see how she worked. He wasn't particularly rattled by her words to him. It wasn't hard to see that he'd been traveling and anyone who sought out a soothsayer was bound to be troubled.

After she dismissed her client he took his cue readily and approached the mini-mare. He could feel her steady gaze on him as she looked him over. As she started making comments about what he was doing there he started to feel more like his old self. She was reading him, that was all. Nothing mystical about it and that was fine by him. If she was reading him than she must read others which meant she was pretty clever. Mystic or not she would probably have an idea or two.

He stopped in front of the small mare and met her eyes at which point he began to resent coming here and the mare. "You tell me. You're the mystical soothsayer." She was definitely reading him but he didn't like the thought that it was so obvious that she could see it so soon.

And just like that he set up an imaginary wall. Margerie had tangled with disbelievers before but never quite like this. He didn't seem to be here to prove her wrong or he would have started making accusations already. His unresponsive answer told her volumes about his reasons. Something had definitely wounded him but not something that would leave a physical scar. It was something he didn't want to think about but at the same time he had come to her for some reason.

Could it only be curiosity? Could that really be all it was or was he after something else. Perhaps he actually wanted to face down whatever troubled him in some sort of masochistic act. There was not enough information to know yet. Oh how she wished he was just another empty headed female fueled by hormones.

"Who was she?" Margerie asked keeping her voice calm so as to not give away that this was a complete stab in the dark. Mares were often troubled by stallions it seemed logical that stallions would also be troubled by mares.

If she was wrong... Her eyes betrayed her as she glanced down to the stallion's talons just for a second. Sharp bits were the mark of a predator. If she was wrong and he had a temper she didn't imagine that she would last very long. Silently she prayed that the spirits would help her and that they were not too cross with her little deceitful acts.

Zamyr shifted an uncertain frown tugging at the corners of his mouth. She was reading or flat out guessing but either way it was still unsettling to hear. "You should just drop the act." He said failing to respond to her question. "I know what you're doing and there's no one else around. These are just clever guesses and deductions." If she wanted to play this game he could as well.

"You are small and so you are scared of the large breeds that wander these lands all over. Am I right? You think I'm going to attack you?" He fixed the little mare with a serious look. He wasn't trying to be mean. To be honest he wasn't entirely sure what he was trying to do at all. He was a bit lost these days. Even coming here didn't seem to be having the effect he'd been hoping for. Facing down his troubles wasn't working. Even staring them down he was still hiding from them.

After a few moments of silent he surrendered. He'd come here for help and here he was snapping at the help and trying to make her look like a fool. "Her name was Ambien." He conceded looking past the small mare back into the trees. Just saying her name was enough to send a flood of memories through Zamyr's mind. He could almost see her standing there, waiting for him to catch up. She wasn't there, of course, and never would be again. "Ambien Rose. We traveled together..."

The wisps at Margerie's feet began to move a bit faster and flicker more as her client's whole persona seemed to change. He told her to drop the act; that wasn't new. He told her how she was doing it; that wasn't new either. He suddenly began telling her why she was doing it. Now that, that was new. She considered running as he posed his question. Did she think he was going to attack her? Of course she did. Perhaps now more then ever since he had decided to vocalize this thought.

Instead she froze. Her eyes focused on the bird crossed stallion and didn't move. She didn't dare say anything fearing it would provoke him. He didn't seem like he would be the first to resort to violence on a normal day but this also didn't seem to be a normal day. She wished she had managed to collect more information before this little outburst. Perhaps then she would have something at her disposal to calm or stun him.

As she was pondering he began to speak again and he sounded so distraught that at first she thought there was a second stallion present. After a brief moment she realized that he was finally answering her question. Ambien Rose. So there had been a female after all.

She took a deep breath and decided to press. He was on to her and he didn't quite seem to be present anymore anyway. She didn't need to mess with her mystical babble right now. "She meant a great deal to you but you parted. Why?"

Zamyr turned his head down and focused on the small mare. It took him a minute to decide what to do and then another to gather himself enough to do it. "I came from the desert. A long time ago it feels like." He let out a small laugh that died off almost as quickly as it came. She had been completely right about coming a long way. There was a little amusement in that. "The first creature I met here was Ambien and she was wonderful."

As he continued to tell the small soothsayer his story he lifted his head again and looked out at the forest blankly with scenes from his memory playing out for him in his mind. He told the mare about his meeting with Ambien and then the meeting with her sister. He told her about the trips the three of them took together and the marvelous sights they saw. All this time a smile graced his face.

That smile faded as he reached his decision to take Ambien off alone. That had been the root of the problem. From there he still told of their adventures and by the time he got to the last one his smile had turned to a frown. "She went back to her sister when she found out..." He said sadly. In no way did he think this was Ambien or her sister's fault. It was his. If he hadn't gotten selfish Ambien would still be at his side.

He took a deep breath and looked to the sky. "She's still out there somewhere, living her life, and she was so full of life too..." It was hard to think of Ambien without him. She would move on like she should but he'd never see her again. Things would always be different now and that was a fact that was almost unbearable.

This was considerably more complicated than Margerie’s usual cases. The biggest problem was this wasn’t something she could just say ‘go pick a red flower that blooms under moonlight and drop it into the ocean’ to. None of her typical mumbo-jumbo would do him any good and they were, clearly, both aware of it. What he seemed to need was a friendly ear and then maybe a good kick in the rear to get him moving again. Margerie might not be able to reach his rear but words could be an effective force. First she needed to help settle whatever thoughts had provoked this visit. Until then there would be no helping him.

“If she was full of life then, thinking reasonably, she still must be.” Margerie took a few slow steps towards Zamyr keeping a close eye on his talons. She didn’t want to get on the wrong end of those and who knew what might set him off. “But, so are you. It is clear to me that what you want is something that existed in the past and I cannot help you there. What I can help you with is reclaiming the future.”

She peered up at him with knowing, golden eyes. She recognized the look on his face now. She knew what it was that he wanted. He wanted to be able to move on and be his old self again. “That is what you truly want, is it not? An end to this limbo that has hold of your life?”

Zamyr tried to ignore the pang of guilt in his chest as the miniature mare referred to his Ambien Rose in the present tense. He spoke of her existing only in the past, was that the only was he was able to see her now? It appeared as though the only thing he was capable of feeling when his thoughts turned to Ambien was guilt. And if he understood this soothsayer correctly that was something that she intended to break him of.

He met her gaze for a moment as he mulled over her words. Was that what he wanted? He considered his actions since Ambien had parted from him. Wandering aimlessly, clinging to the past, re-living his old adventures with her to keep the memory fresh. Yes he wanted out of this limbo, out of this eternal loop, that was what had brought him here.

“Yes, that is what I want, but…” He turned around to face her more directly. “How do you propose I break out of this endless cycle?” He was fresh out of ideas not that he’d put much thought to the problem at hand before now.

PostPosted: Sat Mar 10, 2012 7:59 am

Margerie imagined that it would have been clever to come up with some solutions to leaving limbo before saying that it was what he wanted. Usually at this point she would have suggested some insane and useless ritual off the cuff and leave it there. This required some thought and so think she did.

The wisps at her feet moved slowly as she pondered possibilities. There were hundreds if not thousands of ideas for what could be effective in her head but she had to pick the perfect one. Without even noticing she had made her way over to one of the rock patterns and started rearranging the small rounded stones. As she was substituting a grey one for a white one the idea struck and she dropped the rock.

"What you must do is do something that you never considered doing with this Ambien Rose." She said firmly with a nod of her head before pushing the pebble into place with a hoof. "And if you do not feel that the cycle has broken you must do another thing. Bring fresh eyes to the world to see it as it has not been seen before. When you have done this you will find that you will move on." Margerie smiled feeling as though this was very good advice indeed.

This was an odd creature he had sought out. Zamyr watched curiously as she started moving without focusing on where she was going and then began moving rocks about in the same state. She was either a very good actress or she wasn't doing this on purpose. Either way, he could see why people bought into her mystic nonsense. As she was she looked like some spirit had control over her.

When she suddenly snapped back to herself Zamyr felt a quick jolt of surprise hit him in the chest before passing. He coughed slightly before listening in on her carefully thought out advice. Unfortunately it didn't seem to be much of anything. He could have come up with that idea, it was harder than it sounded. He'd wanted to do so many things with Ambien by his side after all. He'd wanted to show her the world.

It was her second bit of advice that got him thinking. "Fresh eyes...hm..." Fresh eyes. A new companion. That he could do. He could find someone knew to travel with. Someone to replace Ambien. No. That wasn't right, not replace, he could never replace her, but someone to help take his mind off her. Someone to bring something new to his life. "Yes, that's perfect." He said feeling his excitement growing.

"Thank you madam mystic. You will see me again once I am free. A little check in if you will." He grinned, bowed his head and then departed keeping his eyes wide open for signs of life. He'd find a new companion if it killed him.
