Prism had given up trying to leave this small spot several days ago. Many times he had wandered out of the clearing only to make it a short distance before gravitating back to it. At least Dendro didn't seem to mind his coming and going, and more important his current staying. They joked about and Dendro even put him to work, though it was a strenuous task for both of them, helping to clear out the leaves from the clearing, pushing them into the trees where they wouldn't clutter the ground. Spectrum even helped a bit when the wolf was here, though he had recently found a she-wolf to spend some time with so his absence was noticed but somewhat expected. It was slow going that was for sure, but over the course of two weeks the pair managed to get everything done. Now the clearing was ready for winter, which judging by how cold it was getting wouldn't be far off.
Waking from a mid-afternoon nap Prism shivered slightly as he got to his feet. The main thing he hated about winter was that in order to keep warm one had to move around quite a bit. Though the clearing kept him sheltered from the majority of the wind the cold air still reaching this spot and once the snow started it would surely fill up quite a bit of it as well.

Dendro had gotten pretty accustomed to having Prism around. A few times the larger stallion wandered out of the clearing, claiming he was headed off on his own, but Dendro knew all too well he would be back. Not that he minded all that much, the extra help, even if Prism was terribly lazy helper, was much appreciated. Sure it took a lot, a LOT, of pushing to get Prism to help out, but really once the stallion got moving he was pretty darn efficient in what he was doing. Those antlers made great rakes for moving piles of leaves, and in fact Prism also knocked down a few of the remaining leaves that clung to the branches with them as well. All in all the work was done much faster than Dendro could have done by himself.
Looking up as Prism woke up Dendro smirked. "Well look who finally decided to get up, you lazy a**." One thing he learned quickly was that Prism loved to joke around and didn't at all mind when he made fun of his lazy ways. In fact Prism poked more fun at himself than Dendro did. It was why they got along so well, they were both a bit rough around the edges so they could handle each others grumpy and joking ways.

A snort came from Prism as he looked towards smaller stallion. "Says the one who lazed about his pond earlier today. I think you are getting some of my laziness rubbed off on you." Wouldn't that be the day, two incredibly lazy Soquili living in the same spot, not wanted to expend energy to do anything besides the necessities like eating, drinking and sleeping. Actually that sounded pretty good and Prism let out a content sigh at the thought. They had everything they could need right here anyways, only thing was, would Dendro let him stay the winter or would the Nixie eventually tire of his company and tell him to move on for good. Trying to find a new place to stay out the winter this close to it's start could prove difficult. Many Soquili would have already claimed small clearings and protected areas and it was doubtful many would give them up to someone such as him or be willing to share them.
"And I would like to point out that my a** is not lazy, all of me is." He told the other with a snort of a laugh. Even so, the fact was, like it or not, he would need to pull his weight here if Dendro let him stay or in an attempt to convince Dendro he would be more of an asset than a burden. Exactly how he would accomplish that, well Prism hadn't thought that far ahead, but he would likely need to come up with something soon.

Dendro shook his head. Darn Prism, he just didn't understand the ways of an aquatic species. What may look like lazing about in the pond was a necessity. Without moisture his skin could dry out quickly, not so much now as compared to the hotter summer months, but a dunk now and then was very much needed. The winter months would also be bad, the wind and cold would also place havoc on his skin, though perhaps not so much having such a sheltered home to live in. Still, he could play along a bit. "I think you might be right. I better be careful now, wouldn't want to fall asleep while in the water and drown. Wouldn't that be a sad way to go." A water breed dying by drowning. It could happen. While he could hold his breath for a long time he did at some point need to come up for air. It was one part of life that laziness just could not interrupt.
Like it or not, now was not the time for joking. He wanted to have a serious discussion with Prism and making jokes or poking fun at the other stallion just wasn't going to help. Time to get down to business. "So I have a proposition for you. We both know how much you like it here, and we both know I'm not giving this place up." He gave Prism a stern look telling him not to interrupt. "This is as winter sets in a lot of Soquili are going to be looking for a place to stay if they haven't already. I refuse to let anyone take this place from me, but let's be honest, I can't find them off given my size. My threats only go so far. So, I'm wondering if you will stick around, be the 'big guy' for me and if needed help me ward off any intruders." There he laid his offer down, now to see if Prism would accept it or abandon him because he wasn't willing to put that effort in if needed.

Prism couldn't help but snort out a laugh. What a sad, yet hilarious way to do. Drowning due to laziness. Well it probably wouldn't be the first lazy related death in the lands but that was no reason to let it happen. "Maybe you could use some seaweed and tie yourself to that log over there so that doesn't happen." He joked. Imagine seeing Dendro tied to a log while sleeping just so he wouldn't drown. It sounded like something a non-aquatic breed would do in a situation where they were cast out in sea and needed to survive.
Dendro's next words brought Prism out of his joking mood. That tone sounded serious. He worried for a moment that Dendro would ask him to leave. He really didn't want to have to find a new place to shelter in the winter, not with the perfect place right here. But his fears were quickly put to rest when Dendro ended up asking him to stay in return for helping to protect this spot from intruders. Prism was a bit shocked, if not relieved by this. The antlered stallion took a few moments to think on his answer before giving it. No sense in instantly blurting out a yes. "I'm not the best fighter in the lands, but I will do what I can. And Spectrum will help as well when he is around." The wolf was absent more and more these days. With the onset of colder weather many of the small critters he preyed on had moved to better protected areas. This means the wolf had to work twice as hard for his meals. But whenever he was here Prism knew that he too would fight to keep this spot safe from those who would otherwise try to claim it as their own. Between the three of them, they should have a solid chance of keeping it. As long as a skinwalker didn't happen by. If that was the case they could dare well have it if it meant they got to live.

"Ha! I'll try myself to that log only if you tie yourself to that tree so you don't fall over while sleeping." Granted the larger stallion only ever slept laying down, Dendro was convinced that Prism was too lazy to even sleep standing like most Soquili did. The extent of Prism's laziness amused and appalled Dendro some days. He had never met a lazy Soquili until running into Prism. In his old herd everyone pulled their own weight, if they didn't then they were told to leave. The herd could only survive if all it's members worked hard to keep it safe. That was one of the many reasons he left, because in his mind, he could no longer pull his own weird. What with his bad hearing and the loss of his Scout rank there wasn't much for him to do. And playing nanny to a bunch of foals was out of the question...so he had left.
"You don't need to be the best fighter, you just need to help to try to protect this place." If push came to shove and they just couldn't win then they would have no choice but to leave. Bu Dendro did not plan to let that happen without at least a good fight first. Whoever claimed his land would need to darn well work for it. No one would simply walk in and state this was theirs. He had fought for this piece of land and he expected the same from whoever dared to take it from him. With a solid nod Dendro approved. "Then it's settled. You and Spectrum can stay here the winter as long as you help out when needed." When the spring came, he may or may not allow Prism to stay, but for this season it was at least beneficial to have the larger stallion around.

Amused Prism looked towards the tree behind him and then back to Dendro. "Well I suppose if you think it's sturdy enough to hold me up I'll give it a shot." He was joking of course. There was no way in hell he would ever tie himself to a tree. Might as well do that and add a sigh that said 'Free snack here' and wait for the predators to come flocking. Nope, he would not do it. He may not like using up energy to move around but that didn't mean he would willingly let himself be restricted in such a way. Still...now that he thought about it, if there was a way to hold himself up without being completely tied up he could see himself using it to sleep properly. Some days it was hard to get up from laying down, especially as nights got colder, they made his muscles and joints stiff and troublesome to move. Giving his head a shake he re-focused on conversation at hand.
His place here was secured granted he helped out. That he could agree to. If not then he was a bloody damned fool. "Agreed." He said with a nod of his head. There the contract was sealed so to speak. They would both stay here, even though the land belonged to Dendro, he would help out as would Spectrum when needed, though he hoped that wouldn't actually happen, and they would be well protected for the winter months. Couldn't get much better than this. Well...having a mare or two around would certainly make it better, but he doubted that would happen. Best to just be happy with what he had, and anything else was just bonus on top of that.

A smile crossed his lips. He knew full well that Prism was joking. "Well then think of that as incentive to help. You don't help...then I will tie you to that tree. You help, you get to keep your freedom of movement...not like you will use it." Dendro let out a bit of a laugh. Though he doubted he would regret his decision to let Prism stay it couldn't hurt reminding the stallion every now and then about this threat of tying him to a tree or lose his home. And hey if worse came to worse and Prism was more a burden than a help then Dendro could always force him out. He wouldn't have someone mooching off his land eating up what little vegetation there was buried under the snow - even if he had a large supply of seaweed growing at the bottom of the pond. Some winters were worse than others so if food came into short supply Prism would have to go.
A strong breeze cut through the small clearing causing Dendro to shiver slightly. "Winter won't be far off. It's getting damned cold out." He could only hope that he would be able to keep any thick ice at bay in his pond. This is one duty he could not let slip and may in fact involve help from Prism should the cold set in fast. For now though it was time to buckle down, finish the last preparations and let winter fall over them. "Well unless you plan to take another nap there's a few things we can do before anything happens." The clouds overhead spoke of a storm incoming and Dendro wanted this place ready before it hit. "Come on, time is wasting." With that he turned and walked into the trees to start working.
