One week had passed since the rogue admin Zero Omega had gone on the offensive, and already the ramifications of a world without pie had been felt across Gaia's surface. As if in response to the warmth stolen from the bakers' storefronts, the land itself had turned cold and hard. Underground trade markets for contraband sugar and artificial sweeteners were cropping up only to be swiftly purged by the merciless banhammers. Even in Barton, where users were still drunk off their earned Pie Hard winnings, the chill of Omega's petty tyranny was permeating with the advent of Rina's public incarceration in the fountain square.
The situation was bleak, the ovens empty... but hope was not lost. The network formed by those who gathered in the GCD would not stay quiet. They would not lie down peacefully as their kitchens were desecrated. They would not let even Lanzer himself take away their dessert this holiday season. The price would be heavy, the battles hard, but together they took up a new name under the same banner: The Gaian Confectionary Defense. There would be pie, or there would be blood.
One lone veteran readied her arms against a new enemy. In the frostbitten fields outside her Aekean homeland, she would continue the fight her brothers and sisters had been waging on other fronts. She wore a bold red uniform, standing out harshly against the snow and the smog. The Gaian people needed to see the soldiers in this war. Her eyes scoured the terrain as the encroaching bots converged on the obvious rebel.
She counted 40. For now.
Glaring under her protective mask, she readied herself for the first wave.

She readied her rifle and took careful aim, thankful for the warmth her gear was providing as the icy wind whirled around her arms. The snow made her targets hazy in the distance, but the omnipresent smoke of the factory city she was accustomed to allowed her to pick out her targets anyway. Her finger tightened on the trigger with a familiar grip.... she needed to be careful. They were many and she was few.
She fired at her moving target. The slug ricocheted off his leg. She fired two more rounds. One whizzed right past him and the other lodged itself in the snow. She grimaced. Long arms were not her forte, and these things were more durable than she'd anticipated. Not a good start.
The crack of the rifle caught the attention of every soldier in the field. If they hadn't seen her before, they had now.

The bots were starting to swarm, and X knew she'd need to slow them down if she wanted to find their weak spot before losing the advantage of distance. For lack of any better ideas, she fired a short burst of ammunition into a tight pack of the tinmen. They stumbled with the force of the blow, but X watched as each of them regrouped and rejoined the charge.
Except one.
One had inexplicably seized, sparking and flailing wildly as it lost control of its motor system. It then suddenly exploded, the shrapnel bouncing off his comrades harmlessly. She tried to replicate this with a second blob of soldiers with no such luck.
Puzzled, she took loose aim at a third grouping that was getting dangerously close. As she looked down her sights, she saw it. The bots had been too far away for her to see it clearly in the snow, but each soldier had a small animus droid whizzing around it as it tumbled towards her. On a hunch she diverted her aim to the droid and squeezed the trigger.
Success. The Zero Bot soldier seized and exploded, just as the other had. She smirked. Now she was finally getting somewhere.

Her aim now shifted to a much more difficult target. The soldier picked off three more from the advancing group before needing to reload. Out of caution and habit, she ducked behind a snow-covered mound of discarded metal, a common sight on the Aekean perimeter. She changed the empty clip for a fresh one and turned back to the swarm with her rifle at the ********' hell, I'm lucky these things are slow...
Slow wasn't really a good word for it. They were clumsy, falling over themselves and each other as they charged. The soldier in red was relying on that. Standing her ground, she took down another cluster with a directed spray of bullets.

As she turned to face the group that was now closest to her, she realized too late that she'd forgotten an important detail.
The bots exploded when they went down.
By the time the five she'd struck with her last volley started to pop, the wind had picked up something fierce. The thick shards of shrapnel were only a superficial nuisance to surrounding Zero Bots, but the rushing wind had sent snow and hot metal straight at the red figure. She was struck while turning, and the blow was enough to knock her off-balance into the steadily rising snow.
She quickly came up on one knee, immediately taking aim again. She felt a sharp aching in her right side. She knew a piece must have penetrated her thin body armor, but it wasn't deep. She could afford to worry about it later.

At least, that's what it had felt like in the biting cold.
When she made to fire again, the only noise her rifle made was a metallic click. Jammed, she though, by the snow. The bots still had some ground to cover, she still had some time. She manually ejected the shell, but she could see the damage was done. Freezing snow had crept its way into the chamber. She dropped it in the snow and pulled her hard-weathered sidearm handgun from underneath her coat. She brought it up quickly... too quickly.
The shard in her side tore hard at her muscles. Recoiling in pain, she reached over to pull the thing out, leaving a smear of red blood on her green gloves. She left it in the snow with her rifle, refusing to let desperation get the better of her as she pulled her gun to the ready once more.

She took a deep breath to focus, the icy wind being warmed by her armored breather.
Just slow them down... you've faced worse.
She reached into her coat again, this time pulling a frag grenade from underneath. She tossed it hard to the left bank, hoping to keep from being flanked. As she did so, she took careful aim at a droid coming in form the right. The grenade exploded, and she could hear from the delayed round of popping bots she had at least been partially successful. 6 rounds later and 4 more were down for the count. They were closer now, bigger targets. Omega wasn't going to breach this front just yet.
