My dearest Mama,
_____I am writing to inform you that I have come to an agreement with Mr. Bartholomew Mudd, one of the candidates you had picked out for my eventual marriage. I am sure that you will be pleased to hear that he and I have entered into an engagement. While it is currently an informal agreement, it is a very convenient and pleasant option for both of us, since he also attends Amityville Academy and we were already acquainted in a friendly manner.
Mr. Mudd agrees with me on the importance of a formal education and the excellence of the instructors available at Amityville. I have apologized profusely for missing our appointment, and he has assured me that he understands and sympathizes with my reasons, though he and I both hope that the rashness of my actions has not irreparably damaged family harmony.

_____I do hope you will recognize that your father and I were quite upset by the nature of your actions and the harsh words you used on the morning upon which you left home. I am not accustomed to having a disobedient daughter, and your conduct embarrassed us acutely in the presence of an important business contact. While I must admit that your decision to form a connection with Mr. Mudd is a pleasant surprise and one I cannot but approve, you must accept that your hasty departure has caused us problems. I feel that it would be best if you were to issue Mr. Mudd's mother a formal apology for your atrociously rude behavior.
Your father, as well, is not inclined to communicate with you at this point, though I have pleaded with him on your behalf. You may wish to draft an appropriately apologetic letter to him as well.

My dearest Mama,
_____I know I can never apologize enough nor with enough sincerity to make up for the shock and hurt I have caused you. Please accept my contrition and my apologies.
Though I am aware that, as a properly obedient daughter, the most appropriate next step is for me to put in writing a heartfelt promise never to cause you trouble again, I feel that in all good conscience I cannot pen such a promise. Though it breaks my heart to think of your disappointment, I cannot honorably make a promise I cannot fully guarantee. In view of the good name and reputation of the Depths family, I am sure you will prefer my sincere honesty over a false promise of complete obedience.
I have written a letter to Daddy as well, pleading his patience and forgiveness. I hope it will be received with the spirit of goodwill in which it was written.

_____While your father wishes me to tell you that he is willing to accept you as a daughter once again, he is not inclined to respond directly to your letter yet. He has many projects and correspondences that he must keep up, as I am sure you are aware, and an informal exchange of letters that may eventually upset him if it were to become too insolent must, necessarily, be put aside for more important matters. However, I hope that you will continue to write to me. I am always interested in news of exactly what it is that you do while away from home.
I will neither commend nor chastise you for the contents of your previous letter. I know I have raised you as a proper young lady, and I have emphasized at times that honesty is an excellent trait. Please remember, however, that the timely exercise of tact can sometimes open more doors than all the blunt, straightforward statements in Halloween.
Please give my regards to Mr. Mudd. I am quite certain that, as a ghoul of intelligence and delicacy, you will conduct all your friendships and relationships with propriety and good judgement.

_____I assure you that I understand and appreciate your cautions, and I know that you have only my best interests at heart. I value what you have taught me for its timeliness, utility, and delicacy, and for the concern you have always shown for my well-being and education. I can promise you that I will never forget your lessons in etiquette and propriety, and in the proper time and place for careful tact.
I fully understand the importance of the demands on Daddy's time. Please tell him that I am grateful for what forgiveness he deems appropriate to extend to me. I will not bother him with frivolous letters. I, too, have many demands on my time right now. Between classes, homework, club activities, and the maintenance of the friendships and relationships I have formed during my time here, I will do my best to find time to write to you frequently. I do not want you to fret over my happiness and health.
Mr. Mudd and I have discussed our relationship and its terms and allowances in detail. I assure you that I will do nothing to upset the arrangement we have agreed upon. You will be happy to know that my other friendships and relationships will not affect the stability of the agreement.

_____I look forward to your timely and affectionate letters. Your poor Mama gets so lonely and bored now that her beautiful daughters have gone away from home. My Siddie, my pretty little stone flower, you are growing up so fast! For now, though, I feel that it would be wiser to omit any invitation to your father's holiday events. Though I will miss helping you with your adorable dresses and your lovely hair, it would be best to allow the talk to die down before you return home again. I am sure there will be another scandal for all the bored wives to talk about soon.
I am quite glad to hear that Mr. Mudd approves of your other friendships. The best relationships have no secrets from one another. A bit of advice, from your Mama who has been happily married twenty-five years.

_____I expected no more, with the reputation of the family at stake. I have requested that I be permitted to spend the holiday at Amityville Academy, and received approval. I do hope that Daddy's holiday parties go as smoothly and cheerfully as they always do. I have heard that they are always much talked about for weeks afterwards.
Please do not worry yourself, Mama. You are my role model for propriety and elegance. I know that Papa has never objected to the friends with whom you spend time and travel together. I am sure that my relationship with Mr. Mudd will be similarly open and trusting.
