Dru was kind of bored. She'd been climbing the trees for awhile, even the tree that had been such a trouble for her at the being of her climbing adventure. She conquered its stubbornness and got very high up without even slipping on the thinner branches. In fact, she'd even started to store snacks up in the trees between meals that Mom brought back to the den for her and her siblings. She needed to check in with Mura, to see if she'd gotten that far in her climbing expeditions as well.

But for now it was the ground Dru stalked. She didn't want to climb, and she'd already groomed herself, found a watering hole, pounced and killed another monkey when it tried to be sneaky and steal her shinies. She shook her head at the monkeys' need to commit suicide. Just because she was only a leopon, and not a full lion didn't mean she was capable of hunting them down. In fact it made her all the more deadly, since she could climb the trees after them.

Bored and on the ground, what else could she do but look for more shinies. Afterall, she wanted to have a great collection of them. Maybe find some for Mura and Mom and Tachi and her brothers. And she needed to have a lot to do that. So she hunted for shinies, using her nose and hears and gut to tell her where to go and what to look for. The hunting spirit and guide that was her inner huntress, like Mom.

Yrse was sitting up on her hind legs, amusing herself by batting at the swaying grass in front of her. Daddy was off hunting for them and she had been told to stay hidden in the tall grass. At first she had been a really good girl, napping and generally staying out of trouble, but when she woke up she was restless and determined to do something to make time pass. She was still in the grass, but her vigorous battle with the grass gave a pretty good clue as to where she was. However, she was far too occupied to notice. She might even be winning! She attacked the grass with renewed vigour, holding the tuft tight as she gnawed on it.

Dru wandered the area, her nose and eyes on the ground, hoping to find a few pretty rocks with the shiny pointies inside a hollow of the rocks. Like belly buttons. But with pointy shiny things inside of it.

As she searched for the desired treasures, Dru heard a rather vigorous, if one-sided, battle. Frowning, Dru stopped and looked up inspecting the tall grass, a frozen statue. Mom had taught her how to stay still and search without being seen really. She didn't want to trigger an attack against herself. Especially if it wasn't a monkey.

The tall grass waved in the breeze, swaying in rhythm, as if a dance was going on. Dru continued to search for the small growls and fighting sounds.

A section of grass didn;t follow the sway of the breeze as the other sections did. It bent and sprang and went against the wind randomly. Dru listened closer and heard the sounds coming from the patch to random grass. Cautionly, Dru made her way over to the section.

Yrse was really getting into her own game, and had forgotten everything about hiding. She was going to kill that tuft of grass and that was it. She released her hold of it and spat a few times to get the grass out of her mouth. Oh it was sooo going to get in trouble for being icky tasting! Yrse backed up a bit and then leapt at her "foe" with all her might. Unfortunately the tuft of grass wasn't strong enough to withstand a full on assault from a small leopon and she tumbled through the grass, landing at the feet of a... large... white and brown... eeep!

"Don't eat me!" she yelped, suddenly remembering the part about staying hidden and safe. Dad would kill her unless she was eated first.

Dru stared down at the little kitten of a leopon and smiled. It was sooooo cute! She loved it! Attacking the grass like it was a ferocious enemy bent on taking it's anger out on her. "I'm not going to eat you. I'm not a cannibal and I don't eat cute cats!" Dru affirmed with a nod. "Are you lost? Are your parents around? Who would abandon such a cute cub?" Dru asked surveying the area for the parents. She didn't like that the cub was alone. It didn't sit right with her. Anyone could come by and snatch her away or worse.

Yrse was not entirely convinced that the larger cat wasn't going to eat her and her ears were flat against her head. Her grassy foe was forgotten and suddenly she remembered what daddy had told her to do. And not to do... Stay hidden, keep quiet, stay safe... It was a bit late now, wasn't it? She wasn't sure what cannibal meant, but she knew she wasn't lost. She was here, right?

"I have a daddy," she piped up, "He'll come get me soon after hunting."

"Ah!" Dru nodded in understanding and settled down, squishing her grassy foe, that was just tall grass now. A smile twitched at the corner of her mouth. "What were you supposed to do while your daddy was hunting? I know my Mom would have given me instructions that I wasn't allowed to do anything while she was hunting and my aunt wasn't around." Dru started to paw the not so shiny rocks around her, pushing them around like tiny bouncy balls that weren't bouncy as all, but they rolled.

Yrse's guilty look said it all. Yeah that was pretty much what dad had told her. Stay put, stay hidden, do this... don't do that. And now this older girl was making her feel all guilty about forgetting. She knew she should have listened better but it was easy to lose track of things while playing.

"But it's so boring to do nothing," she complained, "I did stay where he told me to..."

Dru nodded. "I can't agree more. It can be very boring. I once snuck away from my aunt when my mom was hunting and got stuck in a tree! I had to wait for some nice lion to come around to get down." Dru smiled at the memory. "My mom didn't find out about getting stuck in a tree, but she and my aunt knew I'd snuck away. I was a very very very boring month after that."

Dru found a stone more round than the others and rolled it between her paws a few times and then rolled it to the cub. "You're ahead of the game then. Wish I'd stayed where I was told that time."

"I can't climb trees," Yrse said and lowered her ears, "Dad has to help me up in the tree we sleep in."

Leopards were tree dwellers and it bothered Yrse a lot that she wasn't good at climbing yet. She could move around just fine when she was up a good tree, but she wanted to be able to do it without help too. It wasn't something she talked about normally since it made her ashamed, but for some reason it was easier to voice her fears to a stranger.

"What if I never learn how to climb," she said and collapsed on her belly, batting listlessly at the round stone.

"I bet you'll be able to climb trees when you're older. I started climbing trees after I got stuck in one because I decided I wanted to conquer them. Show them I was the boss. But I never met my dad. So my mom was a lion and she didn't climb trees at all."

Dru swatted at the slow roll of the round stone and made it go faster back towards the cub. "I think whether or not you climb, you'll still be a powerful huntress."

Yrse tilted her head as she listened, and she nearly missed grabbing the pebble. She lifted her paw to check it was under it before swatting it back to Dru with a little more enthusiasm. She had never seen a lion up close, and she wouldn't have guessed that the feline in front of her was a lion. But if her mommy was a lion she had to be, right? She still seemed nice and not dangerous.

"Leopards need to climb," she said, "Because we sleep in trees. And you have to put the food in trees or lions will take it... And I'm going to learn how to hunt too."

She gave Dru a sidelong glance, hoping that she wouldn't be angry because she'd said that lions would take food from others.

Dru did a small dribble, a quick one two pass between her front paws and rolled the round stone back to Yrse. "And it's not just lions that will try to take your food, but cheetahs and hyenas, wolves, jackals, and other predators. When you put things in trees, all you really need to worry about are other leopards, leopons, birds, and monkey." Stinking stupid monkeys.

Dru felt her lip curl at the thought of monkeys and closed her eyes to calm herself. "Monkeys of course being the most evil and greedy of all those animals. They like to steal just to make their victim look stupid." Dru forced her mind onto nicer things. Like glittery stones. And monkey skull caps full of them. That's the only good a monkey could do. Hold her pretty treasures in death.

"But, anyway, I sleep with my siblings with my mom in her den. Sometimes I enjoy napping in the trees, and even eat there, but mostly I sleep and hunt on the ground. The trees are more my calm place to go and relax. But my sister Mura, she climbs trees too. I'm pretty sure she's fallen asleep in trees as well."

Yrse caught the stone under her paw and listened intently to the older feline. She knew of all the animals she spoke of, except "leopon". But perhaps she'd heard her wrong and she'd said lion. Yeah, that must be it. Her ear perked up as Dru got more emotional. The cub knew of monkeys, of course, but she'd never really encountered one. After hearing how nasty they were she was glad she hadn't. Monkeys sounded like bad news all around.

"Wow," she said, "I think I'll try to stay away from monkeys then."

Yrse realised she didn't know the older female's name and that she wasn't supposed to talk to creatures she didn't know. But they were getting to know each other and she did know her sisters name... So they were almost not strangers now.

"Um..." she said, and tried to dribble the stone like Dru had done, "What's your name? I'm Yrse."

She was probably not supposed to tell her name to strangers either, but they were in the process of not being strangers anymore and she was pretty sure you were supposed to tell your name when asking for someone else's.

Dru smiled beamingly at the cub as she tried to dribble the stone like her. "That's a good decision. Monkeys are trouble, and you don't need that in your life at all. My name is Dru'etrosa, but you can call me Dru. It's a better name because it's shorter. At least that's my opinion. But Yrse is a pretty and short name too."

Being rather young herself, a teenager really, she had no idea that you weren't suppose to talk to cubs without the permission of their parents. She thought she was helping by protecting the cub and keeping her out of trouble and boredom which was trouble in disguise. She didn't think of herself as a stranger so she wouldn't have understood what the cub was thinking at the moment even if she could hear her.

"But birds can be very nice. A bird once gave me a pretty shell from one of his babies that had hatched the season I met him. It was my first treasure. And I find some really pretty feathers that the avians drop as they fly often too. You just have to climb the trees and talk to them. But first start talking to them from many branches belong their nest, otherwise they'll try to peck your eyes out."
