Jordan had promised her a training course run, but they'd ended their spar with ice-cream at the cafeteria instead- which was just as well, since she didn't think she could've gone through a training course after that. Reine briefly wondered if she could hold him to his word, though- after all, he hadn't come looking for her since that one time after their last mission.
Instead, she'd heard stories about him sneaking out to buy a box of maxipads.
Frowning, she stopped right in front of his door, throwing herself against the opposite wall. Knock? Or just walk away? Reine stuck her hands in her pocket, playing with the fabric.
Maybe he wasn't even in...

Jordan was in his room, but not for long; as a matter of fact, he had actually just tossed a bone-dry textbook onto his bed in frustration. He liked to read. He even rather liked studying, in general, but the author of this particular weighty tome had a style that had his eyes crossing at the sheer pomposity after barely half a chapter. Ferros had been alternating between trying to make him yawn and whining about being hungry for the past three pages, and he was very tired of both the text and his weapon's deliberate attempts to be irritating. "Fine," he said, and pulled his coat on. "We'll go run a course or something. Happy?"
Thought you'd never ask. Ferros radiated false innocence.
"You're so full of it," Jordan retorted as he opened his door. "Oh - hey, Reine. Nice to see you."

Just as she was about to knock the door opened and Reine yelped, almost losing her balance in surprise before jumping backwards. She looked for all the world like a deer in headlights as she stared at Jordan- a mix of terrified and sort of embarrassed.
Her eyes darted around, as if trying to find some kind of reason to explain off her presence, before settling for a "HithereIwasjustpassingby!" and a pathetic excuse for a cheerful smile. He didn't think she was a stalker, hopefully? The compound was only that big...
Aughh. Why was she even being so skittish? She couldn't quite look him in the eye. This was kind of annoying. Taking a deep breath, Reine forced herself to look up- there was nothing wrong with just asking him if he wanted to run a training course.. right? It wasn't as if she needed him to carry her off to the infirmary again..
"I was wondering if you were free?"

"I'm free. Couldn't concentrate on my book, so I was going to go do something." Jordan blinked at Reine, nonplussed by her skittishness. "Is something wrong?" She looked jumpy and faintly panicky; had someone been bothering her?

Yaaaay! Wait, just because he was free didn't mean he'd want to spend time with her. Plus he'd said he was going to do something... which meant that he wasn't really free after all?
Stop overthinkinggggg, she groaned. Just ask and get it over and done with, already, geeezzzz what is wrong with you.
"Ooohh, what book was that? I used to fall asleep all the time trying to read textbooks."
Wrong question, dope.
"N..nothing's wrong, I was just.. um. Did you maybe want to go run a training course together..?"
He was going to say no, wasn't he..
snap out of it, princess, this isn't like you.
Even Alynthe's voice carried a hint of irritation in it. Mentally slapping herself, Reine took another deep breath. Yeah, even if he said no, she'd go anyway. On her own.

"A Brief Comparison of Mythological and Prophetical Commonalities, subtitle something something something, don't read it unless you're in need of a sleep aid." Jordan smiled, hoping to put Reine a little more at ease. Why was she so nervous?
"Sure, that's actually what I was about to go do," he answered. "Ferros has been prodding me for a while, so I figure he'll settle down if we go hit something. Did you have a course in mind?"

"I've been meaning to go to the library, honestly.. so much to read up on, and all that. I saw one of the horsemen, you know- the one that looks sorta like a little kid. It feels sorta funny that these things.. really exist? We did see one on the beach, but.." she laughed, the nervousness fading away. "Imagine telling the people back home. I don't think they'd believe us."
Reine breathed a sigh of relief at his response- he hadn't said no! In fact, he'd been about to go do that... It completely escaped her mind that he didn't seem like he'd been thinking of asking her to go along- all that mattered was that he'd said yes.
An almost-familiar warm, fuzzy, happy feeling bubbled up again, and she fell into step beside him.
"I was thinking Mist maybe, you know, I heard it's pretty tough." She grinned up at him, feeling her heart beating a little faster. What, adrenaline rush already? "You up for it?"
Not three days ago had the girl gotten her stomach practically sliced open by Marcus. Always reckless, Reine.. always reckless.

"They never would." Jordan shook his head. "But it's a relief to be around people who know it's real, and that you're not crazy. Even if you do have a voice in your head that talks back when you think." He chuckled.
I'm not sure whether to be flattered or insulted, Ferros said huffily.
Go with flattered, we'll both feel better. "You like a challenge, huh? Sure, we can try Mist." Jordan grinned at Reine; her enthusiasm was contagious, and his mood was looking up already.
"How's your stomach?" he asked as they walked, remembering the incident.

"It is, yeah.. but did you ever think maybe this is sorta like the matrix? Like.. maybe the government thinks we're a threat to national security or something and they caught and contained us somehow and we're just dreaming all this? So, like, if you're in a pod in a pod, that's kinda like.. inception?" Podception? Someone clearly was a science fiction fan. Or just had an overactive imagination.
"Okay, that sounded ridiculous even by my standards. Heh." Sheepishly she shuffled her feet a little. "I'm glad I'm with you.... um, you guys though." Looking to the side, Reine trailed a finger along the wall as they walked.
"Yay Mist! And.. it's a lot better now! Mostly healed, didn't.. scar too badly. Thanks for staying with me, heheh. I kinda just keep getting into trouble, huh.." She sighed, her head drooping a little as she remembered the island trial, then looked up at him with sad puppy eyes.

Jordan blinked, working his way through that, and laughed. "I'd say that sounds incredibly far-fetched, except for the part where we're walking around with magic weapons and fighting monsters. So maybe just a little farfetched."
He nodded. "It's good to have people you can count on," he agreed. "Glad you made it through."
"Oh, good." His lips quirked up in a slightly wicked smile. "You'll get better at it," he assured her solemnly.

"Ehehehe. I'm glad we're fighting monsters with magic weapons, though, as opposed to.. you know, barehanded. And you know me!" She grinned at him.
"Apparently I died in that trial. I know they were just golems and all, and I don't even remember dying, but, y'know, it makes me almost feel like I can do anything. M..maybe not... anything."
Please not the pods again, not the pods... The fear crept over her, and she shuddered.
"Don't want to disobey direct orders, you know." She'd been paired with him on that particular mission; he'd probably seen her getting backhanded by Caelius. No one other than Robert knew about the whole pod thing, though, and Reine intended to keep it that way.
Still, she looked somewhat disturbed, biting her lip and fussing with her jacket again.

"With you on that one." Jordan's thumb touched the band of Ferros's ring absently. "It's certainly a lot more effective."
"I did too." He hadn't forgotten, unlike Reine; he wasn't holding a grudge over it, but the image of Circe's blade flashing down and into his body was burned into his memory. It had been just a golem, yes, but it had been the first time he'd died. Strange to think of it that way. "I remember how, but not how it felt, thank goodness."
He had indeed seen her getting backhanded; he winced a little at the memory. "Caelius is harsh like that," he said.

"Definitely! I still.. kinda need to get my ears pierced, somehow I guess. D'you think it'd look nice? I don't.. know if I'm the earring sort of girl, really.."
I'm pretty enough for both of us, darling, no need to worry there.
sure.. sure, if that makes you feel better..
"I'm glad I didn't.. have to see you die," she admitted. "Or the other phoenixes." Just seeing the gas-masked people suffer had been bad enough; Reine didn't want to even imagine Jordan's face then.
"He is- but not for no reason, I guess. I'm just going to.. try to do better next time. And that's why we're practicing, right?" She seemed to have recovered enough to flash him a grin before pushing the door to the training chamber open.
"So how does this thing work again?"

Quote: Mist Hunter The Miss Taken Tower General Information As the general, jack-of-all trades division, the Mist Hunter training course is a combination of the other divisions' training challenges and also one of the more complicated. The goal of this course is to rescue the princess in the tower. Below her, you'll find yourself confronted with a number of shadowling attackers, and beyond them, a room of only slightly deadly traps. But even should you reach her location, you still need to pick the lock on the manacles holding her in place. Unskilled fiddling with the locks will prove unhealthy for both the princess and yourself. And once that's done, you need to make your way back down through the traps and shadowlings, defending the princess the whole way.
The Miss Taken Tower is one of the most challenging and frustrating courses available.
If you fail: your princess dies, and you are quite possibly KO'd. Senior hunters are observing and will make with a timely rescue as needed.
If you win: the princess will adore you for the rest of her exceedingly brief existence. Peen points for 100% health for you and the Princess, shadowlings fought, going for consecutive rescues.
Part 1 Mechanics - roll your regular attack - roll your regular attack again - if you miss an attack, you lose 50% of your full HP - if you have an available recovery bonus, you may try to use that to avoid HP loss
Bonus Mechanics - This bonus is consumable. - for the Mist Course, it is recommended you review the mechanics of the other division courses, as the division bonuses carry over.
- Trainees: 0 recoveries - Mist/Sun Trainees: 1 recovery - Hunters: 1 recovery - Mist/Sun Hunters: 2 recoveries
Part 2 Mechanics - there are two steps worth of traps in this room, so you'll be rolling twice
- roll 1 d10 to determine what your character is about to step into - use your bonus mechanic to adjust as you can - adjust your HP and bonus count accordingly - roll 1 d10 to determine what your character is about to step into - use your bonus mechanic to adjust as you can - adjust your HP and bonus count accordingly - roll list: (feel free to get creative about what the traps actually were) (-50% HP is off your full HP, so if you hit -50% twice, then you are 100% KO'd)
01. horrible death 02. - 50% HP 03. - 50% HP 04. live 05. live 06. - 50% HP 07. horrible death 08. - 50% HP 09. horrible death 10. live
Bonus Mechanics - This bonus is consumable.

Part 3 Mechanics - use the given roll for your hunter to try and open the lock on her right manacle. Rolling a 1 means you fumbled, and the cuff exploded causing both you and the princess to lose 50% of your full HP. - roll to repeat the process on the left manacle.
Bonus Mechanics
- Trainees: roll 1d4 - Mist/Life Trainees: roll 1d6 - Hunters: roll 1d6 - Mist/Life Hunters: roll 1d8
Part 4 Mechanics - roll 2 d8 to determine your defense against the trap area. - roll 2 d8 to determine how much trap damage targets the princess. - adjust her HP accordingly - roll 2 d8 to determine your defense against the shadowling area. - roll 2 d8 to determine how much shadow damage targets the princess. - adjust her HP accordingly - leftover defense does not stack

"Someone in Life Division can probably do it for you," Jordan suggested. "At the least, they'll have sterile needles and stuff for proper aftercare." He smiled. "I think it'll look nice."
"That's why we're practicing," he agreed. "Aside from sheer boredom or annoyance. The Mist course is kind of a gauntlet run. A little of everything. Including a princess golem to rescue." He was a little wary of that, actually, after having overheard a comment in the cafeteria about Dr. H in a frilly pink princess dress. It was a thoroughly disturbing concept.
"You want to go first?" he asked Reine. "Or should I try to be a show-off and lead the way?"
