Heh, I feel like a newb for asking this. I've been breeding Pokémon since the feature's been available, but I never noticed this slight discrepancy until now.
Often Dozes Off, Likes to Thrash About, Capable of Taking Hits, Mischievous, Somewhat Vain, Alert to Sounds. I know to look for these, since I aim for at least two 31 IVs per bred Pokémon.
My 31/12/31/31/31/31 Slowpoke is Capable of Taking Hits. I understand this; his Defense IV is 31 (unfortunately, his speed is 31, too. Sad face. I was hoping to hit 0.), thereby making his characteristic match.
However, recently I've bred a series of Pokémon (and caught a few, as well) that don't match this pattern; their characteristics don't match their IV spreads, and it's making me a little concerned.
As an example, a Porygon I bred has a spread of 27/31/31/31/11/29, but its characteristic is Alert to Sounds; its Speed is most definitely not 31, so I'm a bit confused.
If you have more than one 31 IV, is the characteristic randomly generated, or did something happen to my Diamond version?

If you have more than one 31 IV, is the characteristic randomly generated, or did something happen to my Diamond version? Are you sure it's Speed IV is 29 and not 26? I know there is some sort of tie breaker system that deals with personality value mod 6 that is used to determine a Pokemon characteristic but even then, not having a characteristic match at least one of it's highest stats is still a little odd. I've bred a lot of high IV pokemon on my Diamond game and honestly never noticed this problem, but I guess I never looked that closely at Pokemon that didn't show the 2 or 3 corresponding characteristics I was looking for, so perhaps I've released otherwise good Pokemon into that wild, Haha. In either case, perhaps it's nothing more than a glitch in the coding? Not everything can be perfect afterall. pirate

Hm. Never mind, the IV checker was incorrect.
A friend of mine lent me his AR so that I could check the IVs of the latest batch of eggs I was hatching. With him having an IV checker code, I thought that it would be correct.
It wasn't.
I'm actually fairly concerned about the Pokémon I've hatched, since the results that the code generated were nowhere near accurate. The actual stats ended up being roughly 30/31/31/9/29/31, turning it from semi-usable (though I wouldn't use it) to being garbage, outside of a status-inducing (read: Taunt bait) Porygon 2 tank.
Oh well. Time to run around and hatch eggs the old fashioned way, via good ol' legwork.
Edit: Hm. Nevermind, I stand corrected yet again.
When using the standard AR IV check code, the characteristics change from HP/Atk/Def/SpAtk/SpDef/Spd to HP/Atk/Def/Spd/SpAtk/SpDef. It all makes sense now.
Ignore the silly breeder.

A B Up Start pretty sure characteristics just effect how they battle by themselves.(that one place in the frontier) Characteristics are linked to the Pokemon's highest IV stat. Just another one of those otherwise mundayne details that serve can a purpose added in by the game designers for flare, perhaps?
