There was always a new guy right? Someone who'm just moved in? Sure, he'd lived here before but he moved away a few years back... If it weren't for the fact that his parents made an offer to him that he couldn't refuse, he would have stayed in that place too. But now he was here, looking to find his place in this city once again.
Tonight was to be different then his usual hunting for fighting areas and such around town, tonight he was to just enjoy himself off of the pleasure money his parents had given to him as a "welcome back" sort of gift. Along with the already paid for apartment, and the new Mokai, it was just another way to monopolize him into doing what they wanted him to do. It didn't matter to him anymore, he just let them get there way like the spoiled brats they were. He was happy just to be able to eat properly again.
Kami had found himself quite the nice little bar in huntingdon, walking in he couldn't help but notice just how nice this bar was compared to when he lived in the more... Lower class parts of this island. When he was younger, he had never entered a bar, so this was quite the experience. But never mind that, he wasn't here to gawk at the nice furniture. He was here to have a good time! He could see some men gambling over some poker game in the corner of the room, while some ate and talked about about who knew what? Other's on the other were where he wanted to be, at the bar drinking there problems away. Kami had long now accepted that alcohol was going to become his new best friend ever sense he had made the decision to move back here.
So, taking a seat at said bar, he called a bartender and ordered what the house suggested for the night. He wasn't used to such that large range of drinks that were available to him, and figured as long as it got the job done it'd be fine right? And so he sat there, waiting on his drink and taking a quick look around himself to see what company this place held tonight.

Devin needed-- no. No he didn't. He just wanted a drink, he reminded himself. There would be no needing anything, but it had been a long day - they always were, anyway - and it would be nice to have something to take his mind off of it and the past week, which meant, of course, the local bar.
Every time he found himself walking there, he felt a twinge of unease, as if going back could, at any time, open up doors to his past and draw him back into that underground world. And yet. Time and time again, he found himself walking that familiar path back to the bar, back toward the insatiable call of bad music and cheap drinks. He didn't know anything else.
Pushing open the door, he stepped inside. The blare of music greeted him, as did the rush of heat against the winter's chill. Comfort? He found none, but as always, there was that unsettling feeling of familiarity. More often than not, Devin wished that it could be anything else.
He shrugged off his thick trench coat and made his way over to the bar. It was crowded tonight. Must've been a Friday. Pushing a hand through his dark hair, Devin sat himself upon the only stool left and raised his hand to greet the bartender. "Evening, Ted. Single malt scotch, please," he said, his gaze flitting to take in the faces around him, as if worried that he might find something or someone uninviting. It wouldn't have been the first time that had happened.
"What, no beer tonight?" Ted asked, only half joking as he poured the scotch and set the glass down before Devin.
The tall young man shrugged. "Needed something better than that piss you call beer." Ted chuckled, shaking his head before turning away to greet another patron. Well, that was that. Devin reached for the glass, hesitating slightly before turning to the silver-haired stranger on his right. "Hm. Cheers, man," he said, before lifting the glass to his lips and taking a sip.

Said silver haired boy was surprised as he suddenly heard the man beside him addressing him, at least it sounded like he was addressing him. Kami's blue eyes shifted over to examine the younger male, thoughts of all kind drifting through his mind... But ah, he was just trying to relax right? They both were.. Thinking it over a bit more, Kami gave a small sigh, giving up on trying be so serious about things. I twas a bad habbit of his.
"Cheers." Kami raised the beverage he had only got moments ago from the bar tender before taking a swig of himself. He nearly choked. He quickly put the drink down, forced himself to swallow then coughed a bit. This stuff was strong! He looked up towards the bar keep, tears forming at the edge of his eyes, " Trying to kill me tonight are we?" Kami joked, trying to get a grip of this thing called socializing.
The bartender gave a chuckle in response, " Is it too strong for you, sir?", he was cleaning a glass as they spoke.
This made Kami shake his head quickly, not wanting to look like a wimp in front of his new 'friend'. "Nah, it's just my first time tasting something so strong, I like it." He lied, but on that 'friend' subject. He looked over to dark haired man beside him, curious to how someone would make conversation with a complete stranger. The other had done it so easily, like it was second nature but... This was just not in Kami's list of things he was good at. Kami's eyes drifted, looking around for a subject to talk about, wondering if they would even have anything in common.
Suddenly, it accured to him as his eyes spotted the T.V., a commercial for some legal Mokai fights were going on. Ah! Everyone loved Mokai fighting right? Or at least betting. Well.... Mostly everyone.
" Ha... They're so cute, it hard to believe those little guys can go all out like that... ", So yes, the male was trying to start conversation... He wasn't too good at it, but hey, he tried.

Devin watched the other out of the corner of his eye, a half amused smile flitting briefly across his face as he set his glass down. The scene reminded him of his first time in a real bar, back when alcohol was a much less familiar substance to his body. Looking down at the dark scotch before him, he realized that a mere six or seven years ago, this stuff would have repelled and disgusted him. It was a shame that the same couldn't be said for today. Today, scotch was his friend.
"Go easy there," he cautioned, nodding at his new companion's drink. "That stuff's not gonna be fun in twelve hours." If the other man got himself drunk, that was, which Devin knew would not be difficult. His own experiences told him as much. "Hey, Ted, why don't you bring my friend here a nice beer? I didn't like that the first time I had it," he added, addressing the silver-haired man. "Better ease into it, hm?"
Devin turned back to his scotch, staring pensively into the glass for a moment before taking another sip. What wouldn't he give to go back to those old days, when he would have reacted to anything stronger than beer the same way his companion had? The silver-haired young man was concerned about the way he came off. Unfortunately for him, Devin could tell what was going on. Less unfortunately, Devin didn't judge. He just wanted to be there too.
Wishful thinking, he knew. What a shame.
He glanced up when the other man spoke again, gaze shifting toward the television. Ah, Mokai. Wasn't that what it was all about here? He chuckled, shaking his head. "Well, I wouldn't call them so little," he said, thinking of Seven, who stood a good halfway up his thigh at her shoulder. She was a big girl, Seven was, though Senna wasn't far behind and no doubt, Kid would grow to a fairly impressive size too. "But yea, unbelievable. They got heart, those Mokai. It's amazing how much of it they're willing to pour out for us humans." Devin wasn't entirely accustomed to anyone wanting to do anything for him, after all. It wasn't like he had family that cared, and even when he had had family to speak of, they hadn't always been too willing to sacrifice for him. Those were humans, too, so it never ceased to amaze him when he thought of how much love and trust Mokai could have for their handlers.

Kami couldn't help but pout...He must have looked like a fool a moment ago. To have someone step in and practically make him drink something lighter. It was probably better that way... He didn't know what half of these drinks were anyways. His thoughts were interrupted suddenly, feeling a bit more light headed... Ah... Yeah, this stuff definitely strong. Either that or he just had a light stomach. Probably a combination of the both.
He slowly moved a hand to his head, keeping it from hitting the table. Ah... He was glad he moving to something lighter. "Thanks...". Beer was now set out in front of him, but for a moment all he could do was stare. The room was moving just a little too much.
Going back to the conversation about Mokai, he remember the one he had in his younger days... She was pretty big wasn't she? Kami let out a lonely sigh, even after all these years he missed her. It was quite amazing what Mokai would do for there master, even the ones forced to fight would never think about biting there master. He chuckled at that thought, " Yeah... They're special little critters... One would think creatures as smart as them wouldn't obey us. They're just far more loyal then our own kind I suppose..."
Finally was able to take up the glass of beer, drinking just a bit of it. He was surprised, it wasn't nearly as powerful, but still gave him that buzz he needed, " Mmmm, wow, this is allot better..." Kami turned his head to look at him, but then blushed and looked back towards the table instead. He was embarrassed to have some complete stranger taking care of him... " Thanks, again."

Devin just nodded in response to the other's thanks, though that mildly amused smile appeared momentarily on his face again as he shot his companion a sideways glance. To say that he envied that didn't even begin to cover it, though somehow, he didn't doubt that the other man would have thought him crazy.
At least, Devin figured, if he was new enough to drinks to get buzzed so easily, he would have felt a lot less tormented by the past few years of his life. He would have known less, seen less. He wouldn't have been able to tell that the blonde lady across the room was drunk and looking to throw her night away on a fling, just by seeing the way she twisted her hair between her fingers and pouted at every guy who bothered to look her way. He wouldn't have noticed that the haggard twenty-something brunette in the booth near the window was fidgeting with her purse and just waiting for the right moment to sneak into the bathroom to load up on one drug or another. He wouldn't have known that the redhead throwing back her head in laughter at the round table would wake up the next morning naked in somebody's bed, only half-remembering who or what she had done the night before.
But he did see, and know, and understand all these things, and that, too, was something that he couldn't change. The past wasn't there to be rewritten, it was just there to be a constant reminder of all the things he had done wrong in his life and all the things that he could do wrong in the future. Devin supposed that at least it had a purpose other than to depress him. Some days, though, it was difficult to see.
"Hm," Devin chuckled wryly, lifting his glass. "You can say that again." Humans were fickle creatures, after all, and loyalty seemed, for the most part, an ideal state of mind that few ever lived up to. Maybe he was just a cynic, but none of the experiences he had had in the past had ever taught him otherwise. There was no sense in putting his faith in people; they were only really adept at letting him down. "A Mokai doesn't know how to weigh its options, see. Not like people can, anyway. They don't think about how much more food they can get by turning their backs on their masters. It's just..." He shrugged. "Simpler with them."
Taking another drink, Devin smiled, glancing over as the other man took a swig of beer. "Sure thing, man. That's what we're here for, innit?" He couldn't help but widen his smile, amused by the irony of what he had just said. As if he really believed that. All relationships were temporary. It was only a matter of time before one of them found a better alternative, wasn't it? Friendship was an ephemeral creature.
Not that the two of them were friends, he realized. They hadn't even had the chance to exchange names yet. Reaching over, he offered his hand for a handshake. "Devin," he introduced himself.

Kami sat there, looking at his for a moment while he though. Or at least, tried to think. At the sound of Devin's voice again he turned back to face the man, smiling a bit. Rather he smiled because the conversation or the drink, who knew? It was an intriguing explanation to why Mokai did as they were told... If he had the mind of a Mokai, maybe he would have turned to this life style long ago... Heh, maybe the Mokai were smarter then him after all; He chuckled at the thought. " A more simple mind, and an easier life style. It's always better to be on a chain. Cruel, but easy."
He went to take a sip of his drink, trying not giggle at the fact that the two of them were getting along so well, that the other felt like they were already friends. He supposed that's what the bar should be about... Drink down your troubles, make new friends... End up waking up in the morning with your clothing missing...
On another subject, Devin had now introduced his name, Kami was just lucky enough that he wasn't so drunk as to forget his own name yet. He didn't need anymore embarrassment. So, swallowing what beer he had left in his mouth, he put down said drink then shook the others hand. "Kami.". He was begging to get a bit red on he cheeks.

"Kami, huh?" He said, releasing the other's hand for another drink. Scotch. Sure had a way of putting things into perspective. He motioned to Ted for another. "You from around here, then, or what?"
He reached for his new drink, doing his best to pay attention. Half listening to a conversation with a new acquaintance was hardly the way to score points, but it was hard going. The drunk blonde across the room had taken to staggering up to passing men and effectively laying her hands all over them in a valiant attempt to be taken home. It was... difficult, to say the least, to focus when that action was taunting him from right across the room.
s**t.
"I mean, you're clearly not from around here," as in, the immediate area of the bar, "or you would be fine with that." He said, motioning to Kami's first, unfinished drink. He figured it was a good enough time to start laughing about it, now that Kami seemed to be on his way to getting completely drunk. Chances were, the silver-haired man only only barely remember the comment in the morning anyway. And if he did, then Devin could only hope that they both understood it was meant in good humor.
Not that it mattered, either way. What were the chances that they'd see each other again? Devin imagined, somewhat slim, unless Kami had taken a liking to the bar and came back, in which case... well Devin was there more often than not. Although how long he stayed was always up in the air. When good things happened, like that drunk blonde, he didn't stay long.

The silver haired boy chuckled, finding Devin's behavior suddenly funnier. Again, this behavior was probably caused partially by the drink. Oh man, he hoped he'd never get used to this. It was such a relieving feeling, especially good feeling because of the help from his 'friend'. Maybe some day he'd even be able to handle something stronger.
"Haha... Yeah, I was from around here, at one point... I just moved back recently for a job my parents got me." Kami couldn't help notice Devin glancing over to the other side of the bar, and had to take a peek himself. He couldn't quite see what he did... All he saw were people, and people didn't normally interest him, especially for sex. For some reason though, him and Devin were just talking. And unlike most people he met, Kami didn't feel the impulse to smash the younger man's head in.
Kami just shrugged, turning back to Devin, and more importantly his drink. He wanted to drink it slowly but... He couldn't help but take up the glass again, drinking what was left and giving a more happy sigh. " I'm definitely, coming back here.... " He frowned, thinking for a moment, moving his finger around the edges of glass in his hand still... And looked a bit ore serious. " Ah... maybe I should stop with one... I don't want to get banned from drinking. ". It was a good thing that his parents gave him a new apartment and everything, but if any word got back to them that he was s**t faced or passed out from drinking too much, he knew it'd just be one more privilege they'd strip away from him.

Concentrate. Devin forced himself back into the conversation, clearing his throat and shifting to put the drunk blonde directly behind him. He could still hear her desperate laughter, but the temptation was relatively slighter when he couldn't see her.
"Your parents, hm?" He echoed, pausing to consider it. Even if his parents were still alive, he doubted that they would have had the means to hook him up with a job. Not that he would have minded that in the least. Being responsible had always been more his brother Drew's specialty, and life was mostly just fun for Devin. It was almost a wonder that he had ended up with anything to do for a living in the first place, and for that, too, he had Drew to thank. Even in death, it seemed, Drew had a way of looking out for his younger brother.
"So which is it, do they just really love you, or are you the total failure?" He asked, half joking. It wasn't like he really had license to judge. If his parents had seen him just a few years ago, they might have died of shame. There wasn't a day in his life when Devin didn't feel like he had let them down, but now... now he was making a living. Now, he was making it up to them.
He watched as Kami finished his drink, and nodded. "Self control," he remarked with a smile. "I'm impressed." Devin himself had no self control of which to speak. Life just seemed a little too short not to indulge in some good, old-fashioned instant gratification. Then again, at the rate he drank, that was probably why life would be short.
It was probably just as well that Kami had decided to limit his drinking for the night. It was getting harder and harder not to turn around to see what the drunk blonde was doing. Devin smiled again. "Guess there's no need to worry about you, huh?" He joked, reaching over to clap Kami on the shoulder. "Which is a relief, because, ah," he couldn't help but glance over his own shoulder at the drunk blonde. "If you'll excuse me, I've got to see about buying that girl a drink." A grin. He reached across to pick up his glass, half lifting it at Kami as he pulled out his wallet and tossed some cash down on the bar counter. "Beer's on me, alright? I'll see you around, man." And he would, no doubt, if Kami planned on coming back. Without waiting to give the other man a chance to protest the money, he turned and made his way across the room.

"So which is it, do they just really love you, or are you the total failure?" Apparently Kami was doing really well on self control tonight... All he knew is that suddenly he had a really strong urge to punch this guy right in the noggin. But he didn't... The guy was really sweet, just painfully truthful, and who could scold a guy for that? Didn't make him want to punch him less, but he did appreciate the honesty
He glared at his drink, wishing even more now that he could have another glass of that stuff. He was brought back to reality when the other mentioned something about buying a drink? Ah... So that guy was really into that stuff? Taking home people they barely knew and doing... Whatever with them. He couldn't stand humans enough at it was, he couldn't imagine doing anything like that with one. "Alright have fun. Thanks again." He wanted to say something like, 'I hope to see yah again.' but would that really be alright?
After a few more minutes he paid for the drink before, the one he spit up, then began leaving to go back to his miserably dark and empty apartment. He took a moment though, pausing the watch that certain man hit on blonde. How silly... He couldn't really imagine him being successful in his attempts, but hey! Everyone had there own secret...
