No one knows scales at my school, not on horn. I believe the wind ensemble knows about two, both octaves. Is this bad? I am in the process of learning and have just started my second year of horn, and I am struggling with the lower scales..

How do you guys play music?!
Every song is made out of a scale. Scales therefore help with sightreading and music in general. If you know your scales, and you know them well, music is just rhythms. Scales are therefore half the music.
Although, whether or not it is a 'bad' thing depends on your age, really. If it is a middle school beginning band thats fine. Intermediate middle school band, shaky. As for the wind ensemble; my final exam for the first semester of my 7th and 8th grade years, our wind ensemble had to play 12 major scales at least 1 octave in 60 seconds. From memory. If its high school; get your butts in gear and learn them. My high school currently runs 12 scales 2 octaves as part of our warmup every day. We aren't required to memorize them, but pretty much everybody has. We have only been working on all 12 for about 2 weeks now.
As for you, its a bit more understandable. Since you have only been playing your instrument for 2 years, I can say you deserve a bit of slack. Practice, practice. Don't pay attention to where everyone else is, just make sure you know them. Just like any piece of music, you have to wrok at your scales. Hell, when our clarinets work with Mr. Veres, we spend almost the entire time on scales(usually about 1-1.5 hours). It takes a lot of work, yu just have to be willing to do that work outside of class as well. If you aren't willing to do the work just on scales, you might want to rethink band.

Well we know them, but our muscle memory (as horns) is really shaky, because we go without playing horn for half a year when marching season rolls around. So it's not like we're completely in the dark, just tend to lose a bit. I do practice, but this is my third day in band (I've been out for exams) since I switched from Mello.

*is scared*
In my beginning band we were taught three scales. My high school required everyone to know all major scales, juniors and seniors had to know major and minor. In college you will die if you don't know them.
It. Is. So. Bad.
Learning your scales is like knowing formulas for geometry and algebra. It makes things easier. Also, you will fail site reading if you don't know your scales.
As far as octaves, we have to play as many is given. Most have three, but one has four. We don't play the ridiculous high notes or low notes.

I've learned half of the scales. My main 2 problems are sequence and tuning. French horn tuning. :/ gotta love it. But scales are definitely helping, so is getting my braces off.

As middle schoolers, we have to come in during recess and play six scales per year for our director, who writes them down. (it's part of our grade) So we automatically learn them.

If you give me time to think, I can play all scales (I just can't remember some of the names) All: Ionian Dorian (whatever one starts with P) Lydian (or the other L) Mixolydian Aolian (one of the ones that start with L) and a few of the Ionian, i can play 2 octaves.

Our final is to play all the scales (except 2 of your choice) and the chromatic. At my last school we never got tested and only needed to know a B flat scale. I'm so scared for finals next month because it what picks the section leaders and chair #
