Anna was lost. Again.Amityville was just so big, and while the country was big too, the country didn't have as many buildings or side paths or people. The witchling had meant to go from the Reaper Dorms out into town, to spend a few of her silver seeds at a witch supply store there. That had been the plan, at any rate. In actuality, Anna was now... somewhere else. She wasn't sure where she was, but there was tall grass and lots of little noises that ordinarily wouldn't have bothered her. She'd been in fields before, and heard all kinds of creatures! But since she was lost, the creatures might have been anything. Deadly, even. So Anna stumbled through the grass, Shibey clutched to her chest so tightly that his eyes were bulging out slightly (though, oddly enough, he didn't protest). "H-hello? Hello?!" she called out every few minutes, her voice quavering. Part of her hoped for an answer every time. Part of her was afraid the answer was going to be something jumping up to eat her.

"Now, Lark, don't be a s**t. I tol'ja I'd carry th' bag. Now jest... let... me..." "Jack DAMN it Ben! I know y'heard me when I said t'mind yer own bizzo n'now here y'are -- damn it Ben let GO -- gettin' all up in what 'm try'na do-- Ben, I am SO serious right now, y'hear? --" A loud rustle sounded from a nearby heap of shrubbery before a small dustbunny pinged out from the depths, gave a distressed sound and promptly tore away as fast as its little cottony legs could carry it. "...now lookit whatcha did." "Oh boil y'got some nerve, Ben, I oughta jest pop ya right in th'face. So help me JACK --" Two heads popped up out of the tall brushy bush. One pair of bright green eyes and one pair of darker brown eyes peered quietly at the witchling and her familiar. A loud cacophony of throat-clearing commenced as a tall, slender ghoul thrashed her way out of the shrub -- followed by a mohawk'd kangaroo. "G'day." The blonde, unabashedly. "G'day." The roo, curiously.

Anna's sharply indrawn breath was accompanied by two things: her leaping backwards and slamming one heel into a rock, and a rather strangled "eep!" noise. Startled, she released Shibey; the familiar bounded down, allowing Anna free use of her arms to windmill through the air and - thankfully - regain her balance. Then she stared at the new arrivals, wide-eyed, her heart pounding. "G-good day?" she squeaked, echoing what they'd said while her brain tried to get back into gear. "I-I'm sorry, I wasn't expecting... where are we?"Shibey, meanwhile, sauntered up to the pair with a casual air. OwO

Lark immediately moved into a crouch when the little bloke sauntered up, resting her chin on her knees while wrapping her arms around her shins. "Awwrr, Ben! Lookit th'lil' thing! Innit just a wee gobby! Jes'so cute, ain't ya lil' guy!" As she babbled to the little critter, Ben rolled his eyes and answered the stranger. "Aye, this 'ere's th'scarefari, treat! S'where we come walkabout, mebbe catch a lil' bug like th'one what got away. What'cha doin' out here all by y'self, then? Y'lost, ghoul?" Ben shook his head, peering at Lark for a brief moment. "Well, ain't no worry, then. Stick wit'us, too right! Y'go to th'Academy, then?"

Shibey looked up at the pair, unblinking, though he appeared to be piecing together the meanings of the strange words coming out of the ghoul's mouth. < I am an Incubator, not a 'wee gobby', > he said, finally, though his tone was matter-of-fact, not annoyed in the l east. Meanwhile, Anna had long since figured out the pair's accents. "I... yes! Yes, I got lost, I didn't mean to but... yes." She stared at her shoes for a moment before looking back up at them. "Are you... you're a Reaper too, right? You didn't just... catch him?" She pointed at Ben.

Lark stared for a long moment at the Incubator before lifting her gaze up to the other ghoul. A long, silent moment passed before those green eyes slipped back to the Incubator. It had talked without moving its mouth. Without moving. Its mouth. A slender brow rose as Lark unfolded herself to stand upright, though her narrowed gaze never left the little white critter. "Aye," she drawled slowly, crossing her arms over her chest. "I mean.. aye, I'm a reaper. Ben's m'familiar. So... y'mean t'say tha' lil bloke, he's yer familiar?" Ben stayed silent, watching the exchange. Was a curious little thing to have for a familiar, too right.

"Yes - this is Shibey, and I'm Anna," the witchling replied, looking a little less nervous. This was a Reaper! One of her own kind, and another one with a familiar to boot. "He is kind of funny, huh? I used-"The sharp pain of memory crashed into her for a moment, and she closed her eyes briefly; when she opened them again, her gaze was steady once more. "Yours is nice and big, isn't he? Nice to meet you," she added, to Ben, bobbing a little half-curtsey in the kangaroo's direction. Shibey seemed amused by Lark's discomfiture. Then again, he seemed amused at pretty much everything.

"I'm Larkspur -- Lark, actually -- n'this is m'familiar Ben." Lark narrowed her eyes when Anna closed hers for a brief moment. Strange things were afoot. "Aye, ol'Ben's a big boil. He's also real good at makin' m'traps break." "Tch, Lark." "S'true, ya big lug." Lark grumped. "Now I'ma have'ta get a new one. Anyways, Anna. Y'new here? I am. What brings ya t'school?"

"Traps? Oh, right... you were catching animals?" Anna looked around, though this time with more curiosity than anxiousness. "And y-yeah, I'm new too. I, um... me and Shibey, we came here to make our family..."She closed her eyes again. It was stupid to keep hiding this stuff. "They got mad at me 'cause I got Shibey, so they sent me away," she said, making the words come out without too much shaking. < Very good, > Shibey said to Anna alone; the familiar turned and walked back to her side, sitting next to her feet. < There is no reason to shy away from the truth. We are what we are. For now. >

"Aye, minis." Lark watched Anna with curiosity as the other ghoul spoke. It was terrible how similar their situations seemed on the surface. Dropping her empty traps at Ben's feet, Lark crossed her arms at her chest. "M'dad sent me away, too. Mum didn't seem t'care too much but she ain't hardly 'round anyway." Lark used a booted foot to fuss with a rock that seemed to become the most interesting thing in the world. "I ain't a grim like th'rest of th'family. They all got scythes -- weapons -- n'I got Ben." Her mouth twisted in a wry smile. "Pretty sure m'dad couldn't stand th'look of me no more so he sent me away." Lark's jaw tightened. "S'good t'know that I ain't th'only one what got sent away by their family." Ben nuzzled against her arm affectionately. It was difficult for the ghoul to admit to her reasons for being at the academy, but Lark didn't want Anna to feel like she was the only one who wound up at Amityville that way.

"Th-thank you... it's good to know that I'm not the only one, too..." Anna sniffled; when Ben nosed her arm she leaned towards him and wrapped her arms around his strong shoulders, squeezing tightly. He was much better for hugs than Shibey. ... And then, of course, she realized she was hugging another Reaper's familiar. "I'm sorry!" she squeaked, releasing her hold hurriedly and taking a step back, giving Lark an almost fearful look.

Ben had kind of a shocked expression when Anna drew him into a hug. He looked helplessly at Lark for a split second before reaching a clawed hand up to pat against the other reaper's back. When Anna suddenly pulled back, Ben's body swayed forward and rocked back. Both reaper and familiar cleared their throats. 'S'fine, treat," Ben assured the ghoul, Lark following up with a quick, "Honestly, s'fine! Ben gives good hugs, too right. So ah.. why were the oldies mad that y'got y'mate Shibey, then?"

"Still, sorry, um. M-my family thinks it's kinda rude to touch someone else's familiar without asking," Anna said, looking sheepish. "Th-thanks... both of you."At the last question, though, Anna blanched visibly. "I-i, u-um..." she squeaked, looking down at Shibey; the Incubator, however, merely looked up at her again with that same OwO expression he always had. He wasn't going to help her explain, clearly. "We, um... my family, we're hedge-witches and warlocks and things, and... we're not very good at it? Um..." Her hands absently picked up a bit of her overskirt and started worrying at the fabric, twisting it about. "M-my parents, they had a plan - we always have familiars, s-so they called in some favors and paid a l-lot of seeds to get... a precious gem and there was s-supposed to be a familiar there. A really strong one, f-for my little b-brother or maybe s-sister to bond with but..."She took a deep breath. "I-I went to look at the gem and I t-touched it and Shibey came out and w-well... I ended up with him and I wasn't supposed to," she said, miserably. Throughout the explanation, Shibey remained motionless.

Lark frowned harshly. She wasn't sure what it meant to have brothers and sisters, but she did know what it was like to disappoint her family. Oh, yes. Ben was a constant reminder of that, albeit a reminder that Lark was rather fond of. She hadn't been at first. There had been all of the classic stages of loss associated with his summoning, but after she'd accepted that her fate was not going to be that of the rest of her family... it had gotten easier for Lark. "When I summoned Ben on m'birthday," Lark shrugged, "I coulda sworn m'da's head was gonna pop right off. Right off. He was so furious. A familiar?" Lark chuckled softly, shook her head. "S'done is done, though, yeah?" Lark was trying to make the ghoul feel better. She knew how it felt to feel so miserable. "Can't change what happened, too right. Jest gotta make th'best'a what ya got."

"There's nothing wrong with having a familiar," Anna said, firmly, apparently recovering her composure. She could feel the pricks of emotion coming from Lark, too, and as much as she personally was uncomfortable with the idea, she couldn't deny that the other ghoul's faint flickers of remembered pain provided Anna herself with a faint... lift. < Use it to your advantage, > Shibey said, to Anna alone. The witchling shifted, faintly uncomfortable. "W-we do important things too, right? I'm just a hedge-witch, but we take care of people and stuff..." she offered, trying to be a little more cheerful about the whole thing. pinchmonster Anna's natural ability is sensing negative emotions, especially despair/pain/sadness/loss and getting a charge out of them~ it's not mindreading though or anything.
