The first time Vanessa suggested they spend an evening together enjoying movies and popcorn she'd had ulterior motives. With an eager heart and little experience she manufactured a half-baked plot of seduction, and suffered under the heavy weight of Kam's rejection. And then, shamefully, she'd taken advantage of Kam at a time when he was drunk and vulnerable. They did not even kiss that night, but Vanessa was certain that, if Kam had been sober, he would not have behaved…the way that he had.

This was not going to be like that.

Vanessa felt sure that Kam was, at least, a little bit attracted to her. But the temptation wasn't enough. And she was tired of wanting more from him. There was little point in pining after a man that she could not have, when Ricky was only a text message away. And all she had to do if she wanted to see Gehenna was cause a bit of a ruckus in a particular area of the city.

Thinking about them made her smile.

It was an expression that she wore all day, and which stayed with her until the evening, when she started preparing for Kam's visit. She tidied up, ordered a pizza, and set out some drinks. The apartment she shared with Chase was a comfortable size. It did not take long, to clean the space, and the pizza was due to arrive within the hour. Vanessa sat comfortably in front of the television, and waited for the knock at the door. She was pensive, but not upset.

It hurt that he didn't want her, but that was okay. It hurt that he went on dates with other girls, but that was okay.

Kam had been a very good friend to her, in more ways than he would probably ever know, and it was important to Vanessa that he understand how much she appreciated him.

Kam had learned a long time ago that it was much easier to get around town as Gehenna. He could avoid the crowds by sprinting across roof tops, take short cuts down dark alleys without any fear and cut his walking time in half if he had to. And yet, tonight he was working on a lazy crawl through the city as Kamboja.

He was letting his feet lead him through town, winding through the Christmas crowds without so much as a passing glance for the people he brushed past. His ipod was blaring loud, garbled music through his earbuds and his eyes remained focused on some distant, invisible object. He continued that way through the entire walk until he was left staring, face to face, with the apartment building he knew Vanessa lived in. He had been there a dozen times but tonight? Tonight everything was different.

He'd had a long time to think after his revelation and yet he still felt completely unprepared for how he was going to handle this. To Vanessa it must have been just like every other movie night but to Kam.. it was a confrontation that he could have done without. If it'd been anyone else, anyone, he would have just stopped talking to them. Of course, it was because it was Vanessa that he was having this issue in the first place.

He stood for a few moments in front of the door, staring at tarnished apartment number above the peephole. With a sigh and the knowledge that he couldn't put it off forever, he brought up one heavy hand and beat a half-assed rhythm to announce his arrival. His expression suited his mood - not quite a scowl but lacking every ounce of playfulness he usually had in her presence.

Tonight was not going to be a good night.

If the tempo of the knock at the door was unusually sober, Vanessa didn't notice. The pizza was not due for another forty minutes, and Chase had his own set of keys. It could have been somebody else standing outside that door—her father, for example, or John Jr. But she knew that it was Kam.

An excited smile made a home for itself on her pretty face.

Vanessa took a moment to check her reflection in the long mirror that hung next to the door. She was dressed appropriately for the evening in a pair of jeans and a flattering white t-shirt, but couldn’t help wondering if the touch of make-up was a bit too much. Tonight wasn’t about impressing Kam, or trying to pressure him into anything that he’d made pretty clear he did not want. Vanessa, however, liked Kam a great deal and couldn’t help wanting to look nice.

Women (and sometimes, men!) wore mascara and eye shadow all of the time.

It didn’t have to mean anything.

Except, if Vanessa was going to be totally honest, it did. … There were just some things she couldn’t resist.

“Hey,” Vanessa’s greeting was warm when, after only a couple of moments, she opened the door. Kam’s expression might have caused her to hesitate, if it was any less friendly. As they were, and as delighted as she always was to see him, Vanessa closed the distance between their bodies without a second thought. She wrapped her arms around Kam; pulling him effectively into a hug. "I'm glad you could make it."

The embrace was supposed to be innocent. Vanessa only meant to say hello.

A hug was nothing new to Kam, especially not from his over zealous friend. He'd endured plenty of them, even smiled and hugged her in return, but as her body closed the distance between the two of them he was reminded of all the not-so-innocent hugs he'd shared with a certain fiery haired Senshi.

He grimaced instantly and brought one hand to cautiously pat her on the shoulder, then used that same hand to hold her in place as he pulled away and walked passed her farther into the apartment. He didn't need an invitation and he certainly wasn't going to let her see the look on his face just then. He just passed her and went straight for the drinks she had set out, pulling his earbuds from his ears with one yank and shoving the whole ipod into one of his pockets.

He popped the tab on a soda and took a long sip, much longer than necessary, until he knew he could look at her with a straight face. He turned slowly and then simply leaned back into the wall with one shoulder, looking at her from the shadowy darkness of his hood. How did he bring this up?

"What movies did you get?"

He just needed.. a little more time.

It surprised Vanessa when Kam returned neither her ‘hello,’ nor her hug. His hand was gentle where it found her shoulder, but the touch was nevertheless unsettling. There could be no mistaking the way he held her in place, or the way that he simply refused to look at her. Even Vanessa, who sometimes missed the most obvious social cues, could tell that something was wrong.

“American Psycho,” she answered him, voice calm, bright eyes flickering from Kam to the little pile of DVDs resting on top of the television. “Zombieland. There are others too.”

But Vanessa did not want to talk about that.

This night wasn’t going to be like the others. She was going to apologize for every time that he’d had to fend her off, and Kam was going to have fun. He was supposed to be feeling appreciated right now, and not gazing out at her from the depths of his hood like some temperamental grim reaper.

She crossed her arms over her chest, fixed him with her golden stare, and wondered if she’d ever found him more attractive.

Kam was brooding. Kam was distant.

And Kam was sexy as hell.

More than that, however, Kam was her friend.

Vanessa swallowed, and had to struggle to keep her voice level, “You’re upset about something.”

She’d never seen him quite like this before. It was somehow both infuriating and fascinating.

“What’s going on?”

Kam simply nodded his head as she listed off the titles of the DVDs, clearly only half listening as he stared blankly in the direction of the television. It wasn't that he meant to be stand-offish and peculiar but the act of discussing this was even harder in practice than it had been in theory. If it had been up to him, he probably would have stayed in his brooding silence the entire night, wasting time like a zombie.

But Vanessa was just far too observant and forward to let him try.

His dark eyes shifted and met hers but faltered instantly at the sight of the bright irises. Staring at them now, it seemed so obvious, why hadn't he ever noticed the similarity before? He grimaced and drained the last of his soda can before crushing with the strength of one hand, getting out just an ounce of frustration as the aluminum crumpled beneath his fingers.

For a moment he just stared at the crushed can, trying to decide (not for the first time) how he was going to bring this up. Unfortunately, Kam was a man of few words when he was upset. Actions were so much easier.

In seconds it was Gehenna standing there, leaned into the wall with the crushed can in his hand. His eyes hadn't glanced up, he hadn't moved a muscle to draw his power over him. Yet everything about him was different and not just because he was covered head to toe in armor. His muscles were tense, his mouth was set in a grim line, and when he finally found the power to bring his eyes up to meet hers again they were more brooding and dark than ever.

"Vulcan." One word, it was all he could find to express the dilemma in his brain, but it was the only word she needed to understand - he was certain.

Vanessa was not shocked.

Shocked was a gross understatement, and did not suffice to describe the tidal wave of emotions that rocked her system upon Kam’s transformation. He looked so pissed. All of that frustration and confusion wafted off of Gehenna in rays of heat that Vanessa didn’t really understand. They tugged at her heartstrings and were as exciting as they were terrifying.

She suddenly felt sick, and gripped the back of a nearby chair for balance. It felt good to do something with her hands—to know that something was real, when all of this felt like a dream. When she could not actually touch the emotions that racked at her soul.

“Gehenna.”

One word.

Actions were easier, but there was nothing for her to do. She couldn’t know what Kam was thinking, because he had not told her. But Vanessa recalled all of the moments that Vulcan and Gehenna had shared, and then the way that Kam always insisted on keeping her at arms length.

These things did not go well ********,” Vanessa cursed, voice shaking with an emotion that she could not suppress, and left him to go stand in front of the television. Very carefully, almost methodically, she pried open one of the DVD cases. It cooperated, but the disc inside wouldn’t come free, and it snapped in two under the pressure of her trembling hands. Vanessa made a little sound. The pieces fell.

When she spoke, her voice was a whisper, “are you going to make me regret this?”
PostPosted: Mon Dec 12, 2011 1:28 pm

The Squire stiffened as Vanessa said his name, uncomfortable under a voice so familiar and yet different all at once. Everything about her was new, like a veil had lifted and revealed a mystery better left unknown. He knew her face, her voice, her laughter - yet it was all being linked piece by piece to a woman he had known much more intimately. When he looked into her eyes, he saw Vulcan's staring back. When she spoke, he heard Vulcan's words on her lips.

He could no longer pretend that she was a little sister that he needed to protect, the damage to their friendship was irreparable. Gehenna had ruined something that Kam held dear and, for the first time in Vanessa's presence, he wasn't sure what to do. How did he fit the pieces back into something they could use?

After a few moments with her back turned on him, Gehenna let go of the addictive power of his Knight form. He let it slip away, back to the subspace where it always awaited his call, and the cold reality of their situation hit him full force once more. As easy as it would have been to hide behind Gehenna's power, he didn't need to draw a Negaverse agent into the apartment for the sake of a little comfort. Sure, beating the hell out of someone would have felt wonderful in that moment but he couldn't keep hiding behind the mask that had caused these issues in the first place.

He had chosen this confrontation and he would see it through to whatever end they reached.

"I don't know," he answered finally, stepping forward and away from the crutch of the wall until he was level with the couch. His eyes stared at her back blankly as his mind tried not to conjure up the memory of her skin beneath her shirt. He grit his teeth and finally looked away again, narrowing his angry eyes on anything in sight that didn't remind him of Vanessa. He finally just settled for staring down a nearby lamp.

"I didn't want this." His fingers curled into fists at his side, until he heard the metallic crinkling of his crushed can. It had been forgotten until the sharp edges began to bite at his dark flesh but by then it was welcome as a distraction from the frustration swelling in his head. "I didn't want you to.."

His words failed him and as they did his anger swarmed in to fill the silence behind them. A growl hissed between clenched teeth and his arm reeled back, tossing the aluminum can at the wall across from him with all of the force of one angry mortal man.

"I don't know how to ******** fix this, Van," he whirled, confident in his anger and almost bellowing, "I told you I didn't want this for you. I can't be what you want." His eyes bore holes into her, fiery with a rage born of his own guilt.

It had been so long. So long since Vanessa could remember feeling this stupid, or this angry. She should have known. It was impossible, now, not to recognize the similarities between Gehenna and Kam. They were both so arrogant-- both so large, and so strong, and so passionate. In the back of her head Vulcan had always thought that Gehenna looked like Kam, but the magic of Gehenna’s glamour had blinded her to the truth.

Vanessa stood, unmoving, in front of the television; staring down at the shining surfaces of the shattered DVD, listening to his footsteps, waiting for him to say something. She could feel those dark eyes on her, and felt naked under the raw power of his stare. The hair at the back of her neck stood on end. Her heart beat so fast that she thought it would try to get away from her. Surely, Kam could hear it.

If she was going to keep her composure, Vanessa needed to remain still. She needed to focus on something other than him, and the tempestuous nature of the emotions that threatened to overwhelm her. Breathing had never been so difficult.

And then Kam didn’t just speak. Kam growled, and even threw something in her home.

“Don’t you ******** dare,” Vanessa whirled on him; answering his fury with a self-righteous passion all her own. She was not shouting. Not yet. But the more she spoke, the louder she got. “Don’t you act like you know what I want.”

“You never ******** asked me, Kam,” her voice shook, and tears of rage pooled at the corners of her eyes. Vanessa was stubborn and refused to let them fall. She stepped closer, lifted her hands to his broad chest, and shoved him. “And you don’t know anything. Because if you did…”

Vanessa took a deep breath, and stared into his dark eyes with her bright ones.

“If you knew anything,” she whispered, and shoved Kam again, with less force than before, “you’d know that I want you, and that I’m not asking you to be anything other than who you are.”

Her cheeks bloomed with colour.

Remembering suddenly that he hadn’t wanted this, Vanessa pulled her hands back from where they’d smoothed over his shirt and averted her gaze. Her chest heaved with the pain of this encounter. She felt unsteady, and wondered if he was about to walk out of her life forever.

As Vanessa's fury rose like a tidal wave, it crashed into the wildfire of Kam's own rage. It hit and the fire swelled, burning through his veins beneath his flesh until he felt like his whole body was on fire. Her words hit his ears like torrents, crashing over him until they broke down the wall, piece by piece.

When she shoved him the first time he took a step back, narrowing his hard eyes down at her bright ones. Then the second shove rocked him backward again and her fury overcame his own, until his sputtered and finally died in its wake. He just took the shoves, not even bothering to defend himself as guilt swarmed in the emptiness left by his rage, eating away at the confidence he had found. The eyes on hers were no longer harsh, but just as lost as they had been in the seconds before.

This was not a path he knew how to walk.

"You don't deserve this, Van." He straightened up slightly and then leaned, very minimally, towards her where she stood. At this distance he could see the water brimming in her eyes and flush across her cheeks, even if she refused to look at him anymore. It ate at him, feeding his guilt. His hand half raised to touch her, to try and offer her some form of comfort, but then faltered and fell as he realized he didn't know how.

It might even make things worse.

"I'm trying to tell you I'm no good and you're not listening." It seemed like such a simple concept in his head. He knew he was a screw up, bad news, unworthy. Why couldn't she see it? He was hitting that point again where words were beginning to fail him as he tried to express emotions he normally ignored. His brows furrowed and a contemplative expression surfaced.

Finally he reached out, very slowly, and touched her cheek with the tips of his hesitant fingers. He needed her to look in his eyes and see the truth in his words. "I want something better for you than.. me."

It was barely a caress. Still, the soft skin of her cheek glowed darker underneath his cautious fingertips. Vanessa was silent where she stood, and mirrored Kam’s body language by leaning, subtly, into his warmth. She did not move any closer, and could not have pulled away if she’d wanted to. His hand anchored her in place, and made coherent thought impossible.

She looked, when he bid her to look, and searched his eyes.

The tears were gone. In their place burned a soft desire, and a question. Vanessa bit her lip, and struggled to comprehend the things that he was trying to make her understand. Kam had bandaged her hands when she’d burned them. Kam had saved her from tumbling down the side of a mountain. It was he who’d discovered her bleeding and terrified after her encounter with Tanzanite, and he who’d waited by the hospital bed for her to wake up.

Vanessa could not have asked for a better friend.

And there was, as far as she was concerned, no better man.

That was the truth, as she saw it. Vanessa, wishing desperately that this didn’t have to be so difficult, brought the palms of her hands up to his chest once more. Her touch was gentle, and careful. She had promised herself at the beginning of the night that she would not try and pressure Kam, but something new hung in the balance now. She wasn’t prepared to give it up without a fight.

“I wish….” Vanessa’s voice was a murmur. She took a bold step closer, and made a soft sound. Except for their clothes and her hands between their chests, they were separated by nothing but air. “…that you could see yourself through my eyes.”

This was not the shy invitation of an inexperienced girl.

It was the deliberate seduction of a woman who understood how to get what she was after. Vanessa breathed against Kam’s lips, let her eyes flutter closed, and dared him to deny that he wanted her.
PostPosted: Mon Dec 12, 2011 6:51 pm

Every muscle in Kam's body tightened as she took a step closer, frozen into immobility. His mind wanted him to step away from Vanessa and his body, at the same time, reminded him that she was Vulcan.

Fire blossomed beneath her fingers where she spread her hands across his chest, even beneath the fabric of his shirt and hoodie. He drew a deep breath and felt the way her hands rose and fell with his expanding chest. Whatever decisions Kam had made about Vanessa she was bent on changing, he could see that in the depths of her bright eyes.

His lips parted as if he might say something to her, to warn her away for the hundredth time, but honestly? Kam didn't have half the will power he needed to resist anymore. He could only say no so many times and he'd worn out his last denial with the last of his anger.

The fingers on her cheek shifted to spread out across the plane of her face, until he could curl them around the back of her head and hold her there. The hesitation in his eyes faded as passion replaced them and in that moment Kam found that, once again, words were not quite as easy as actions. He leaned down and closed the small distance between them, pressing his lips into hers and letting the fire ignite in an instant.

He didn't know where they were going, but he was damned tired of fighting her over it.

Oh, yes.

This was not their first kiss. It was not even their second. Together Vulcan and Gehenna had already explored the fire that burned between their souls. But there was something inexplicably different about this. Kissing Kam, without the protective cloaks of their powered forms, felt both exactly like and very unlike kissing Gehenna.

It was more intimate. Or something.

Vanessa’s heart fluttered. Her knees felt suddenly weak. When she pressed closer to him now it wasn’t about asking for more. It was about holding on. She gasped sweetly, excited because Kam had finally acknowledged the truth of this, and wrapped her arms around his neck.

Vanessa had always had a haphazard way of expressing herself. Passionate and reckless, she resorted to the realm of the physical whenever words weren't enough. Inherent in their kiss, and Vanessa’s body language, were all of the things that she might never know how to tell him.

Kam was a very special person in her life, and Vanessa intended to keep it that way. Whatever they were doing might not have been just about sex, but it also definitely wasn’t about cornering him into a relationship, no matter the trepidations Kam might have had.

The lives they led were dangerous. There was no telling when it might all just… be over.

Their friendship was precious, but Vanessa wasn’t worried about losing that.

“Stay here tonight,” she whispered, pulling away briefly for air, and opened her lips to his for a deeper kiss.
PostPosted: Wed Dec 14, 2011 9:09 am

Ever so slowly, as the seconds ticked by and he crushed his mouth against her own, Kam was beginning to forget about all of the emotions that had been weighing on his shoulders as he walked into Vanessa's apartment. He wasn't angry, or upset, or even hesitant. The warmth of her body against his own and the way she curled her arms around his neck wore away the last of his reservations.

He drew in a deep breath as she broke the kiss just long enough to speak to him, but he couldn't manage a verbal response. His heart was beating in his ears and his pulse was racing - intelligent conversation had flown out the window.

He reached up with one hand and pulled his hoodie down from his head, letting it fall to his shoulders and drape over her arms. Then that arm slid around her waist with the second, crushing her up against his body for a moment before he simply lifted her clean off of the ground. Without breaking away from her lips he hobbled blindly forward in the direction of her room, feeling clumsily with one hand until he located the door knob and swung it open.

Then he kicked the door shut behind them.
