Before hasn't been in the best of moods lately. He was avoiding someone and that was always a stressful situation for the Life Hunter trainee. When he was still Milton, the amount of effort he put into keeping away from people who used to be his peer that decided they were no longer friends wasn't this much. But then again, he had the mall and the different movie theaters and bookstores and cafes. And most importantly he had his house to hide in.
Here... well... here he was stuck. Limited access. Limited locations. Mandatory classes. The level of AWWWWWWWWWWKWAAAAAAAAAARD was getting to be too much for him. He really was such a pathetic, sorry sight. So why wasn't he in his dorm room moping?
A certain Death Hunter trainee had this amazing sixth sense and knew when he was feeling sorry for himself. So Before had learned if he wanted to really mope, he had to do it elsewhere. He was heading for the library when he almost ran into the person he was trying to avoid and took a detour. Somehow he ended up in the Gym.
"Hmm... this is good a place as any I guess." he decided aloud. Little did he know he still wasn't going to get any moping done.

Davey and Before had gotten off to the worst possible start. Not even Dr H had earned the ammount of immediate ire that Before did. Now Davey had spent some time wondering just why that was - the doctor was just as offensive, but he did it on purpose and continued doing so (whereas Davey seemed to have scared Before into never mentioning the arm again). Eventually he had decided that it must be bcause Dr H at least earned Davey's respect for the things he did do well, for his power and ability if nothing else.
Davey wondered if Before would also become even more tolerable if Davey could respect the other trainee's ability in battle. Unfortunately, Before was always shooting his mouth off before the missions even started, which made it hard to not auto-tune him out.
The last mission had gone slightly better. They'd actually worked close to each other. Of course, Before had been stuck in a two-foot golem. Hard to evaluate battle abilities when you were tiny and away from your weapon.
Clearly Davey was just going to have to take matters into his own hands. So when he walked into the gym and saw Before standing around, looking vaguely lost and emo, Davey abandoned his plan of training with weights. Azrael materialised in his hand. Walking up silently behind Before, Davey tapped the flat of his sword against Before's shoulder.
"Move it," he ordered. He pointed Azrael in the direction of a wide, mat-covered area. It would suit Davey's purposes well enough. It was well past time that someone knocked Before into shape, and it might as well be Davey. "This has been a long time coming."
Davey... probably sounded a lot angrier than he actually was. Oops. Story of his life.

It was less of a turn and more of a leap that Before made to face the new arrival, naturally said leap was accompanied by a panicked yelp. He'd instincitvely summoned Vanna, the large wheel shielding his face as he stumbled into a defensive stance. Oh God, oh God, oh God, it was Davey!!! Long time coming? B-but what did-oh, right the arm thing.
Before audibly swallowed and fought to ignore the flashbacks of his unexpected battle against Candace. He still shudders at the mere mention of that female trainee. "W-what? C-can I take a raincheck instead?" it wasn't that Before didn't like sparring... It was just he preferred it be a mutual decision.

It was still kind of nice to see that he could intimidate some people. Evie seemed to be doing her best to introduce Davey to all the other hatchlings are someone nice and friendly (he knew that talking to people before he had breakfast was a bad idea). At least Before was still scared of him.
"No rainchecks," Davey answered easily, testing his grip on Azrael.

Before really had to start remembering to make sure the gym was either empty or he was near the door so he could make a hasty escape. "Man, I gotta ha--aaaaave to be more careful of this place from now on..." >.> smoooooth Before, real smooth. Davey will never suspect you were about to make an unintended pun about his hand. Or lack thereof.

Davey noticed Before's suddenly terrible grammar and drawl, but put it down to Before being... well, himself. There was a reason that Davey had deciding that Before needed whipping into shape, after all, and it always seemed to begin with Before's mouth opening.
Anyway, Davey had better things to concentrate on. Like attacking. Davey lunged forward, making a wide sweeping slash with Azrael. Davey was being his version of nice. His opening strike wasn't as hidden or strong as it could have been. Consider this your warmup, Before.

The problem with having the type of weapon Before had been bonded to? He needed room to maneuver. As it stood, Vanna took most of the large sword's sweeping strike, and still, Before felt the force shove his arms into their sockets. Holy s**t, how strong was Davey if he had both hands?!
The devil shield mentally hissed in indignity, You had better not let that slide, silly Before.
The life trainee's response to having the large sword pressing down against his weapon was to move with the attack's direction, letting the bladed weapon scrape along the wheel's broadside before allowing Before to get close to Davey and... well.. given the limited space between them, he only managed to shove his shoulder against the older man's chest.

Davey stumbled back as Before used his body to shove Davey aside. Regaining his footing, he reassessed his opponent. That had been a pretty good move. Not the most strength behind it, but a good idea nonetheless.
"Not bad," he inclined his head. But could Before do any more than that? Davey planned to find out.
Davey moved in and to the side, this time aiming a thrust of his blade down at Before's leg. A thrust was harder to black than a wide swing, and Davey combined this with aiming lower, out of the 'easy' range of a shield. Davey didn't believe in going easy, even for a friendly spar.

Before never did well under pressure. And the amount Davey was placing on him was, quite frankly, a metric ******** worth. His attempt to block the thrust was awkward at best and unfortunately unsuccessful. As was the swing that missed by a mile as Before's leg gave out. To his credit, Before wasn't asking for a time out.

Davey wanted to push before, not browbeat him into the ground. He'd never been fond of hazing and before had enough problems, to Davey's mind, without his own personal bully. Davey was more of a personal trainer in this scenario - force some extra effort without killing anyway or making them wish they were dead.
So he backed off and let Before regain his feet before moving again. (( rolling ))

Davey made a standard chest shot, within shielding range if Before had recovered from the last attack and could get his shield up in time.
He didn't. Davey frowned. "How heavy is your weapon?" Maybe Before needed to be working on his upper body strength.

Before yelped and brought a hand to his chest to asses the extent of Davey's last blow. The cut could have been deeper. A lot deeper. Which made it clear to Before that Davey, unlike Candace, wasn't out for blood. Well, not more than necessary. However at the question the one-armed trainee asked, Before's head snapped up as teal eyes widened.
DID HE JUST INSINUATE I WAS FAT?!?!
Before mentally flailed in an attempt to distract his partner from her rage. "She's light as a feather! She's not fat!" he declared, more to salvage Vanna's pride than to satisfy Davey's question. And in truth, only Before would be able to weild Vanna with little to no difficulty. She had the necessary heft to deal heavy damage.
And to prove his claim, Before pushed himself onto his feet and went right into a jumping lunge for Dave's legs.

"I - what?" Davey's mind blanked out. When did he say the weapon was fat? How could a weapon be fat?
While Davey's mind was boggling, Before leapt and slammed his wheel-shield into Davey's legs. Predictably, Davey went flying backwards. A choked stream of curses rose in Davey's throat. He tried to bite them back, but as he rolled away and back to hit feet, some escaped. "Goddamn motherfu-!" Davey bit down on his tongue. ********, but that hurt. He tested his legs, which weren't happy about supporting his weight right now, but didn't buckle.
He eyed Before, reassessing. "Remind me not to piss your lady off. But just for the record, that was me commenting on your skinny arms, nothing against her."
Holy crap, ow. Davey very much doubted he was going to be on his best form for a while. Not that that stopped him from closing the distance between them and striking out at Before's shoulder or upper arm.

Before looked as if a lightbulb just went off in his head, "Good clarification that!" he beamed, relieved that the other trainee was able to alleviate his weapon's anger. When he brought up the wheel to act as a shield, the angle was all wrong and still allowed Davey to cut him. He grunted in pain, swiveling on the ball of one foot, using the momentum from the one-armed trainee to swing his wheel despite the fire lancing through Before's arm.
