The last assignment from Mr. Rengath's drama class had left the frost demon confounded. Of all the things she could have possibly gotten out of the box, it had to be beans. The ghoul had spent the last couple of days thinking of ways to scare another person with beans, but to no avail. Edel was somehow still convinced that their teacher couldn't possibly have set them an impossible task – there had to be a way to make those beans scary.
Off to the library she went, hoping to find a book which declared that beans were evil and to be feared. A herbology book perhaps. Running her finger down the row of dusty tomes, the ghoul paused that the one titled “Poisonous and Carnivorous Creepers”, deliberating quickly before pulling it out. Dusting off the leather cover, the ghoul quickly found herself a seat and began to read.
The preface mainly credited those sad sods who had given their lives, a limb or more during their research, giving praise for their bravery for discovering what a normal citizen shouldn't. There was also a disclaimer at the end that read : If identified, please do not eat*, the asterisk leading to the footnote below that read : applies to the general populace.
It took an hour or so of frantic flipping before Edel found something she could use. Yes, this could work.

At least Edel was trying to be smart about it. Mortimer had taken to staring down at the beans as if doing so would somehow make the beans scarier. Or jump. Or something.
Siiiiiigh.
It was also a feat to keep the can away from his prying minipets who, no matter where he put it, managed to locate the beans. Mort had already lost several to Daisy and Mimi - thankfully Brian wasn't concerned with anything non-fleshy. Still, the more he put it off, the more the zombie felt homework niggled at his mind. Eventually, he gave up, threw some clothes on, and begin his search to find Edel.
Mort didn't know if she was in her room, but frankly he was afraid to step into the demon dorms; their fancy-lookin' building was enough to make him feel poor and ugly. Graaaa. He also couldn't locate Moure, as he wasn't in his room at the time Mort tried . . . Grrrrraaaaaa, he should have given the ice demon his number when he had the chance. Chuppi was waiting on him!
In desperation, Mort began a room-by-room search of the academy, asking for the demoness's whereabouts. Only about half an hour later did he get a tip off about seeing someone with icy ears and blue hair heading into the library, at which point the zombie shuffled and shambled as fast as he could (which was not much at all) towards ye old sanctuary of literature.
Opening the door with a little extra force on accident, Mortimer entered the library with some huffs and an angry glare from one of the student workers. "Eeeeeeeedel," he began to call, pushing his glasses up. "Eeeeeedel Edel Edel."

"Eeeeeedel Edel Edel." The frost demon turned around, her vacant eyes staring at Mort. Oh yes, yes yes yes, he was stuck with the same homework assignment too was he not? Without so much a greeting or even asking him if he had done his homework, the ghoul reached out and grabbed the undead by the grab and shoved the book in front of him.
She looked at him expectantly, then realised that he wasn't getting it. Now she would show him the light. Edel pointed towards a section of the book which read:
Gremino Beans – Do. Not. Eat. Upon ingestion, the beans will multiply in the belly and find their way out through any means possible (most common orifice is the mouth, though others have been recorded depending on the severity). Other side effects may occur, varies from species to species. Contagious only because others may hunger for what has been spewed out by the infected.
Alright, it was a long shot. A REALLY long shot but the frost demon was desperate.
“Y-You think this might work?” It would require quite a bit of acting to pull off, and very convincing acting to scare others. Edel for one was certain she wouldn't be able to pull it off, but Mort might -
Wait. “Y-You've not completed your assignment either have you?”

owo? What was this? Gr . . . gremlin beans . . . upon ingresio . . . most common origami . . .
The zombie could read, he swore. He never claimed he could read well. I mean, some of those words had more letters than both his hands had fingers. Well not really, but again Mort's attention got diverted towards something different before he could correct this belief.
"Th-Think so?" he replied with some hesitation. "Has not done homework yet. Will do n'thing to g-get done."
Speaking of which. Mort pulled out his skellyphone and quickly typed out a text.Rown Meet n library, have Edil 4 hw Mort also never said he was a great speller; he took lazy routes on texting, as opposed to his sentences on Groanspring. "Have friend f-for help," he explained to the ice demon, looking hopeful. "Chuppi. Saw in class? Small, greenish, l-lots spines. Has fake blood n' face paint. Will come soon."

The monster was sitting at her desk, staring at her latest book, when the phone next to her started to vibrate. It nearly rattled itself off the surface and onto the ground before the ghoul managed to catch it Flipping it open she read the message, cheeks turning red for some reason, and she quickly texted back a reply.Ol-j-man I am on my way, be there in a moment. Chuppi did not believe in short-hand for anything because it was a sign that she wasn't paying enough attention. She also had a hard enough time with English as it was and just shortening words gave her a headache - she actually had to think to figure out what Mort had sent to her. None the less she gathered up her homework supplies and a notebook, just in case, before scuttling out from her room and towards the library.
She had never met this 'Edel' before and was a bit nervous, but if Mort was her friend then she couldn't be too bad. . . . right? She didn't have time to rethink her choices though as the chupacabra entered the library, looking around for a specific zomboil. She found him and a lovely looking young woman near a section of books about plants (?), and she hurried over.
"Buenos tardes, mis amigos." Good afternoon my friends.

Edel, still feeling washed out from all the intensive reading, stared blankly at Mort as he attempted to describe Chuppi. Just when you thought she had it figured out, the ghoul opened her mouth and raised a finger before slumping back down and saying, “Unfortunately, I don't recall such a person.” As for the boil asking for more help to come (with face paint and blood no less), the ghoul gave a few nods as a reply.
It wasn't too long before Edel spotted the ghoul Mort had tried to describe earlier. “Chuppi, am I right?” she said, getting up from her seat and extending her arm for a warm handshake. “My name is Edel, pleased to meet you” she greeted with a smile.

Mort checked his phone and nodded at the monster's return message. "Iskay. Was big class." After all, it was hard to forget the scramble to scare the invisible person in the chair.
Mortimer clapped his hands when Chuppi came, grinning. "Yay, came quick! You see Miss Edel in class, yes?" Nevermind that the demoness hadn't recognized her. "M-Miss Edel think has found good thing for beans."

"I did not want to make you all wait long, so I hurried over. It is pleasure to meet you, Edel." Chuppi reached up and took the hand offered to her, blushing faintly when she noticed how much taller and larger hands Edel had. It never ceased to have those around her show how small she was, and the monster found herself feeling a bit insecure after all. She liked Mort, she really did, but a small part of her was regretting coming out to help already.
Beans? For a moment the chupacabra stared blankly at the pair, wondering about beans, when she remembered that those were the items that they had been given for homework. "Oh, do tell? And I have brought the blood and paints."

“It's a long shot,” Edel explained as she reached over to turn the book for Chuppi to read that extract, “but I think we could pass it off as being inflicted with a dangerous, contagious disease.”
“At least, with the beans,” the ghoul eyed the blood and paint a little enviously.
“Though, just spewing beans might not pass off as scary enough...” the frost demon tapped her chin, pondering, “I guess that's where the others come in.” Ah, maybe this was all just a really bad idea. Edel looked at Mort and Chuppi a little sheepishly, wondering what they would make of that.

It was only then that Mortimer noticed the ghouls' different statures and appearances and, knowing Chuppi, she might very well start comparing herself. Best to be careful and tread lightly. Maybe try to find legit food later for them all.
Why was the solution always food? Jack, he would get the munchies soon . . . He was low on money as it was. Maybe he should - noooooo. Minipets were off limits. No matter how delicious some of the smelled sometimes. No no no no no.
Wait, he should be thinking about the homework!
"Mrrr . . . Paint face, put beans in mouth?" Mort offered, scratching his head. "Make lotsa noises, have f-fake blood everywhere? C-Can hold lotsa beans since not need breathe."

Chuppi stood in front of the two, her posture indicating what Mort was fearing would happen. If Edel was thinking this might have been a bad idea, Chuppi was already deciding it would be. Sure they had beans and ideas and that it could all work out, but did they really need her for that? She and her items were just a little fluff then in this case and maybe if she left them with the two they could get things done faster? She certainly wasn't going to be needed after all, and maybe she could just ask the Professor if there was another style of homework she could do.
Perhaps they'd be disappointed though if she left, though Chuppi seriously doubted it. A weakling in a group, even if they had the best supplies, would always drag someone down. Wordlessly she pulled out the blood (some was missing from one vial) and the face paint, holding them out to her companions. "I...well, you can use these. I. . . ."
It was hard to say 'I can do something else', so she waited until they decided to take her items. After they were gone from her hands she'd dismiss herself.

D-Did she say something wrong? Edel noticed that Chuppi was looking slightly uncomfortable around them – no it had to be her, the ghoul was Mort's friend after all. Maybe she was shy? The frost demon really didn't know and was unsure of how to avert the awkward situation. The ghoul could only give Mort a very helpful look which basically read: Is she alright?
“Alright s-shall we begin?” Yes they should get this done as soon as possible. Or while she still felt crazy enough at least. And insane enough she was. They would most probably get into trouble for pulling their stunt in the library, but who else would know and possibly be intimidated by the obscure disease other than the librarians themselves? The frost demon eyed the old, rickety librarian lady as she hobbled around between the shelves, rearranging and re-shelving some books (using her stick to whack away at some of the nasty bitey ones). Her eyes caught the gaze of Mort and Chuppi before turning back to look at the lady. CoughCough.
...
Edel took out her vial of beans and set it on the table. It was only then did she realise that none of them had volunteered for the role of infectee yet.

Unfortunately, Edel's very helpful look was replied with a blank stare. Mortimer wasn't very good with things that required a stretch of his imagination or a big leap in logic; or even a small leap in logic, such as this case. Also it didn't help that his mind was still somewhat on food. Was Chuppi hungry too? Maybe they should all go get food after this after all. Beans weren't tasty.
Then he thought he understood the look after the demoness glanced back at the old librarian, at which point the zombie's fingers began fiddling. "Will be i-infected," he said in a low voice, eyes darting towards the possible target. "But . . . D-Don't think Mr. Ringar be impress with old lady scare."
No of course it had nothing to do with the fact that he didn't want to frighten the librarian. Or the fat that she had a nasty-looking stick thingie. What are you talking about.
Also Mort clearly had heard the professor's name wrong.
He stopped twiddling his fingers long enough to take Chuppi's offered items with a nod. "Thanku, could not do without! But think sh-should find new target . . . Know students?" he posed to the two ghouls.

"It...depends? Do we just want to run around campus and startle people, or find ones in specific? We have the chance of getting in trouble too, or getting injured? Some people do not take well with anger and startling." While Chuppi hadn't met anyone who'd been outright aggressive towards her she knew of more than a few scowl students who may or may not be easily moved towards violence.
Violence was not the answer and it sounded so painful, so very painful. But if Mort was running around, didn't undead not feel pain at all? If he got punched (she'd still feel so bad it wouldn't be funny) it wouldn't hurt him nearly as much as if her or Edel, right? "Um...Well, how about we do make up and blood first, and then think about it? Maybe we can just scare gnomes."
Gnomes were always an easy, easy mark.

As to Mort's question if they knew someone they could scare, the frost demon had nothing to say for that. She would have suggested Danny, but the flame demon was likely to punch Mort in the face if he succeeded and set him on fire. For the undead boil's sake, they'd best not aggravate the flame demon.
"I guess we'll have to settle for a gnome then..." the ghoul eyed Mort apologetically and pulled a chair out for him to sit. "Would Chuppi like to do the honors?" she asked, referring to the make up. The beans would have to come last.
