Howl was dressed warmly, but just as handsomely as ever. He was clearly wearing more than one layer, his blue and silver suit seemed to be made of a thicker material today. He was carrying what looked like frozen roses. They were beautiful. The white ice on them accented the red just perfectly. As he had hoped when enchanting them.
He'd told Sophie he would be out working on a spell. Well, technically he had worked a spell, but not for an employer. For himself. He'd gone to buy the roses at the local flowershop, and then had enchanted them. This would be a special day. He'd had this planned for months. He'd meant to do this for months. Everytime he'd tried, though, something had interrupted him or ruined the moment.
Not today. No, he was determined. He'd walk Sophie into a corner and propose if he had to. He walked inside. "Sophie! Dress in something warm, we're going iceskating!" No room for argument. There was an empty skating rink near by. (Howl knew, because he'd been the one to make it). "Come on then. I've got something for you."

Sophie looked up from where she'd been mending a skirt of hers, blinking and pausing in her sewing. "Pardon?" She asked, folding the skirt carefully and setting both it and the needle she'd been using down on the coffee table. "Skating? Right now?" Brushing her hair back from her face, she stood, walking out into the entrance way to see what it was Howl wanted.
"I don't think I have skates, Ho-oh. What are those?" She smiled when she saw the roses, moving over to touch one of the delicate petals softly, carefully. "Howl, these are so pretty. Are they real flowers? Oh, you didn't kill them, did you?" She fussed over them for a moment, then beamed up at Howl.
"If you put these somewhere nice, I'll hurry and go get changed." Flowers always did seem to put her in a better mood.

"Don't have skates?" Howl repeated in disbelief. Honestly, he tried doing something nice and she looked for excuses! "Sophie, have you forgotten you're a witch? You don't need skates." He seemed pleased, however, when she noticed the roses. "They're for you," he said, moving to kiss her cheek. "Glad you like them."
He swept into the kitchen, roses in hand. He put them in a nice vase, and nodded to himself. The icy trim on the petals had been enchanted not to melt. "There," he said. "Now, Sophie. Before we go iceskating, I've got something important to ask you. And you'll have to answer me in order to leave the castle. Sort of like a password. You give me the answer I'm looking for, and I'll let you out." He moved to lean against the front door, smirking. His outward appearance was confident; though his eyes showed his true emotions. He was nervous.
"Marry me?" He pulled out a ring from his pocket. "I know this isn't our happily ever after. We can start another one, Sophie. Morgan will come. We'll find a way back to Ingary eventually. For now, though--our lives have started over, our choice or not." He paused, he was finding that he was more confident as he continued to speak. "We might take advantage of it," he suggested. "Have a second honeymoon. Renew our vows."

"Well of course I need skates, how am I supposed to skate otherwise? On my nose? Honestly, Howl-" She followed him into the kitchen, frowning at him the whole way and back again. She seemed to have forgotten her promise to go and get ready; and if she hadn't, his next move would have done the trick.
"A password?" She raised her eyebrow, shaking her head. "Really, now? Well, that seems counter productive. If I don't answer, I don't have to go outside in the cold." She thought it was a bit pointless. What was he trying to do? Get her to go out, or keep her inside? Really, he should make up his mind.
She opened her mouth to tell him so, but all her words vanished in a gasp. Her eyes flicked from the ring, to Howl, and very slowly her hands crept up to cover the smile that tugged at her lips. "Oh...Howl..." She looked back down at the ring, reaching out to touch the wrist of the hand that held the small box. Then she moved closer, pushing past his hands to throw her arms around his neck.
"Of course." She whispered. "Of course I will."

Of course? Of course! Sophie said yes? She'd said yes! For a moment, Howl's playful expression fell, face going slack. His eyes widened as he wrapped his arms around Sophie. "Really?" he asked. Then he seemed to recover, and he smiled. "A Christmas engagement," he said with some satisifaction. "Your sisters would be pleased. Is May Day good for the wedding?"
He took her hand and carefully slid the ring on her finger before pulling her against him and placing an equally careful kiss on her lips. "I've been waiting a long time to hear you say that," he muttered into her ear. So long. Before she had stopped responding to his letters. Before she had died. "A spring wedding, then. Anything you like, Sophie."
He paused, seeming to recall his intial invitation. "Right, ice skating," he said. "Unless you'd rather stay inside." He smirked. "Hot chocolate?"
