It was a distinctly unpleasant afternoon- approaching evening, as Reine picked her way through the jungle. Alynthe was in her hand- naturally; here, a small rustle could be a big monster, and you didn't want to be defenseless against a big monster.

Or even a small monster. Reaching the outpost, she cast a furtive glance around, making sure there was nothing lurking and waiting to attack, then desummoned the weapon and hastily climbed up the rope ladder.

Safe~ The girl exhaled, feeling somewhat braver now she'd reached the outpost itself. "Reine Walker," she called out, somewhat anxiously. "Anyone else.. up here?"

Kat loved to explore placed unknown to her. This jungle was huge. There could be all sorts in here, but it was probably best she didn't go and find out. Besides, she was stationed at the outpost today. She found that disobeying orders wasn't exactly healthy. So instead, she waited there, watching for anything or anyone.

She was informed that she would have someone there with her, but she had yet to see anyone arrive. Maybe they got lost in the jungle or something? Hey now..if that was the case, then maybe she would be allowed to explore it anyways? Y'know, in the good of finding a lost comrade? The idea was quickly discarded when she heard another girl's voice from the base level of the outpost.

Pushing herself into a standing position, she moved to inspect who it was that was here. When she got to the base level, she was surprised to find the one girl she had seen from the Sahara mission. Now she wanted to know how her face was..poor girl. "Sorry, sorry! Didn't here you come in."

Motioning towards the girl, she held out her hand to shake with hers. "I'm Katherine Taylor."

"Nice to meet you!" There was a wide grin on Reine's face as she took Katherine's hand and shook it. She'd seen the other girl before- here and there, though they'd never spoken. The sun hunter seemed friendly enough, and Reine was glad for that- imagine having to be out here.. on your own... ughhh.

"Creepy place here, isn't it? Bad enough that there's all the fog.. I don't know what they expect us to keep a lookout on, when it gets darker than this." Biting her lip, she peered over the railings. It was still quiet for the time being, which Reine took as a good sign. The chill from the fog, though, was getting to her, and she pulled her jacket tighter around herself.

Gesturing for Reine to follow her back up to the next level of the building, she settled down against the wall again, making herself comfortable. "Nice to meet you as well. Its good to have some company out here. I've been here for..an hour already maybe? Nice and quiet though." If she wasn't on watch duty, it would be a great place to bring a book and read it. Though, Kat was never the kind to sit and read for hours on end. She would lose interest, and have to do something else to occupy her time, or keep herself busy. She hated staying still.

"Its not so bad. I find it kind of interesting actually. If I had permission, I would be in there right now." She grinned, staring out into the jungle. "There must be so many interesting things out there--I'm dying to see what." Shrugging, Kat stretched out her legs in front of her, now fidgeting with her scarf. "I dunno? Maybe they thought we came with night vision or something?" Snickering, she then looked back to Reine. "Do you have night vision? 'cause, I sure don't." Obviously, she was joking around.

"In any case, I'm sure we'll be okay out here. Besides--we're not completely helpless. We can at least put up a bit of a fight before we get mauled to death by some freaky creature."

Reine followed Kat up higher, thankful to be further away from any possible monsters, then took her place beside the other girl. She had to admit, once you got past the creepiness, and got used to the fog, the view was pretty nice from up here.

"One whole hour, on your own? Man, you're brave." Her eyes widened when Kat mentioned she wanted to actually explore the forest- was she crazy? Reine admired the sun hunter's courage, though- perhaps that was why she was in that faction, fighting on the frontlines. Like Boss.

What would he think of her, being such a coward?

"I'd go with you if you wanted," she volunteered shyly. "I mean, safety in numbers, right? Who knows what's out there.. and how many things are there.." She hadn't dared go back into the labs since she'd first seen Robert in there, but Reine was itching to do anything sciency at all. Dissections, observations, scans.. whatever it was, she'd be up for it. Maybe they could even get some samples of things from the forest to study.

As usual, though, she couldn't resist making a joke. "Pfffft. I thought cats could see well in the dark," she grinned, nudging Kat. "And yep! If anything attacks, I'm counting on you, partner."

Shrugging, she shook her head and continued to watch outside. "Nah..there's really nothing to it, and nothing has happened at all. Its kind of relaxing out here really." She grinned, resting her chin on her arm as she continued her watch.

Her attention drew back to the girl when she mentioned of going with her into the forest. A crooked grin tugged at the corner of her mouth, while she repositioned herself into a more comfortable seated position. "Really? Sweet!" She wouldn't mind some company if she were to explore this place.

Letting out a small sigh, the woman pressed her back to the wall, taking another glance outside. "Unfortunately, orders are orders. We're just going to have to sit tight for now. But maybe later, we can make a request to check things out or something, yeah?" Maybe they could even have others come along? Who knew? But the idea of exploring this place made her heart flutter.

Snorting, she folded her arms over her chest. "Hah! Cats also have really good balance as well as night vision, and I have neither. So I guess that means I'm not a cat. Or..a really fail one." Shrugging again, she shifted her gaze back to the jungle. "Likewise, partner." She smiled, keeping her eye's outside.

Though they were posted out here for watch duty, she really doubted that anything would happen, which would probably be a relief to Reine.

"Y'think?" Kat was right- it was cool out here, nice and windy and quiet. Almost a good place to catch a nap. "I feel like I should've brought cards or something," Reine joked. "Some way to pass the time. And yeah- hit me up anytime, if you're going forest-exploring! I'm in Room 125."

The sun trainee was from her batch, Reine knew that much. She'd seen the girl in the classroom with them where they first met the Doctor, who'd shot Clarice's golem. There was a vague memory of her- and another boy mentioning they weren't from the same trial, so Reine decided not to pursue that.

"Psshhh, there's always exceptions, I mean, penguins can't fly, but they're still birds. Anyway, every cat is a good cat, right? Even Kat-herines. I used to have a kitten," she laughed, looking out over the wall. "I wonder how she's doing, now..."

She knew she should block out the past; all those regrets really wouldn't help in a battle, or any other critical situation- but it was so hard to forget. What sort of life had Katherine left behind her, when she'd chosen to come to the island? It was probably better not to probe, in any case..
PostPosted: Fri Dec 02, 2011 3:36 pm

"Almost." She laughed, thinking a nap sounded nice. "Heh heh, I think that would have defeated the purpose of keeping watch outside." Half grinning, she shook her head. "Though, it would be nice to do something while we kept watch. As much as I like it out here, I don't know if I could just watch for hours every day. Thankfully, our duties are rotated out in different places it seems." Which was more than fine by her.

"I think..the only thing cats and I have in common, is that they like warm sunny places to sleep in, and my name resembles one when shortened. Other then that, I would be a pretty fail cat." Which was okay, because she didn't want to be one anyways. She did, however, want a cat. She doubted that she would be allowed to own one here though. Deus Ex Machina's rules were pretty strict when it came to one's possessions kept.

"Really?" She asked, her full attention now on the female hunter. "I've always wanted a cat. But I never got the chance." Before this, she could barely afford to pay for her own needs. There would be no way for her to look after a cat, and supply it with everything it would need. Not that, that stopped her from thinking about it constantly.

She was at least thankful that she had nothing and no one to leave behind when she joined Deus Ex. If she did, she probably wouldn't have been able to do it. Having no ties to hold her back just made her decision all the more easy.

"There is someone to at least look after your cat, right? Relatives or something?" The idea of any animal being left on there own would make her flip out. But, she doubted that Reine would have done that. Not with the way she talked of it anyways.

"I know, right?" Reine laughed, leaning back again. "I'm not really the type that can sit still.. and not do anything, I mean, with lab work, sometimes you have huge breaks between steps in a procedure, like when you're waiting for colonies to grow, or even incubating stuff.. yeah. So I always had a book or a game on hand, or even my computer... This place, though, it's almost like holidaying at a resort, just much, much less.. relaxing. It's almost kinda nice to have this free time between missions."

Whoops, she'd gone off on a huge tangent then.. hopefully Kat didn't find her too boring.

"I think you're a pretty cool Kat, though," Reine smiled. "And hmm~ she's with my mom now, I left her there when I went off to college. Same as most of my stuff... didn't bring much with me to my new apartment. I never got to say goodbye, though.."
PostPosted: Mon Dec 05, 2011 12:56 pm

Cocking her head to the side, she listened as she went on. When she finally finished, Kat scratched lightly at the side of her face before speaking. "You worked in labs before you came to Deus Ex?" She wasn't sure how people could stand it--working in a lab. If she had to work in a lab, she would have probably gone insane. Much too quiet, and clean..and..creepy for her liking. No..Kat was much happier in the sun division.

Flashing a grin at the hunter, she shifted her gaze back out to the jungle again. "Aw, that's sweet of you. From what I can see, your pretty cool too." Satisfied with staring out at nothing again, she returned her gaze to Reine. "Sorry to hear that. I've heard a lot of the hunters here had to cut some painful ties. I guess I'm one of the fortunate one's who didn't. At least your mother will take good care of her, I assume?"

"Part-time, yeah. Interned while I was at college. Science.. is kinda my thing, I guess. Biology more than chemistry or physics. You?"

The sky was getting darker and darker, and the chill was beginning to get to Reine- why had she worn so little out, anyway?! Pulling her jacket tighter around her, she settled back to listen to Kat.

"We did, but I guess we kinda made that decision already, when we came here. And yep, she was the family baby.. she'll be fine. I'm sorry, though, for bringing all this stuff up." Reine really didn't want to drag the mood down, especially when the forest seemed gloomy enough..

"So how 'bout you?" Reine flashed a grin at the other girl, hoping to lighten the atmosphere a little. "Your turn to tell me something. Anything!"
PostPosted: Sun Dec 11, 2011 3:40 pm

So Reine was into science? She wished she had the mind for it, and the patience for it. "Oh--uhh.." She rubbed at her arm nervously, not too willing to talk about her schooling. "I um..I kind of dropped out of high school when I was seventeen. Bills kind of got in the way of things, so I worked as a waitress before I came here." She wasn't upset about it, she even liked the job really. Meeting some of the people there was part of the fun. "Anyways.." She mauled over different topics to discuss.

She hadn't realized how dark things had gotten. Pretty soon it really would be impossible to see anything outside. But, they were supposed to stay put anyways. Oh well.

Frowning as Reine talked of her past, she felt a little bit of pity for the girl. It must really suck having to go through that sort of stuff. "No need to apologize." After all, it was nice to have someone to talk to.

"Oh?" She laughed, and shifted her body into a more comfortable position. "What would you like to know?"

"Ahhhh." She dropped the topic when Kat did- she wasn't particularly interested in personal information anyway.

"How about your favourite food?" Reine was joking, she couldn't really think of anything. "The stuff at the cafeteria's so awful," she mused. "I kinda forgot what ice-cream really tastes like." Sighing, she looked out towards the forest again.

"I wish we could see anything but dark blobs of what are probably trees," Reine commented. The moon itself was blurry, hidden by both fog and clouds- it could barely count as a light source, and yet it was their only one.

"H..hey," Reine said, suddenly worried. "You don't think we'll get lost in the forest on our way back, do you? I don't know if I can navigate through the forest in this darkness.." Flicking open her phone, Reine checked the time- the people on the next shift would be coming in approximately half an hour.
PostPosted: Mon Dec 12, 2011 2:34 pm

Thankful for Reine to not continue the subject, Kat relaxed some, pressing her back to the wall. Sitting here for hours was starting to make her all stiff. She needed to be up and moving around, not sitting in one spot doing nothing but watch. Ugh..she hated watch duty.

"Heh heh, well..I don't know if I really have a favorite food. There's quite a few I like, but none which you'll find in the cafeteria." She grimaced at the thought of the food served at Deus Ex. Kat was sure military provisions were better. "I have to agree with you there. Oh well..I guess its better than having to go out and hunt our meals.

Noting Reine's concern on navigating through the jungle, Kat wondered if she should have thought to bring a flashlight. Oops. "Don't suppose you have a flashlight with you, no?" She laughed nervously, hoping for a positive answer. She doubted it..

"Well..I'm pretty sure I know the way back.." Her voice trailed off into silence as she thought of the path. Yeah--she was pretty sure she remembered..pretty sure.."Well, we can use this as our light--" Laughing, she pointed to the glow sticks hanging from her goggles. Not that it would be the best light out there..but it would insure they wouldn't get separated.

"At this point, I think any real food might just be my favourite," Reine joked. "I might even pick, like, carrots over the gross stuff they have.. okay, maybe not." At 'hunting meals' the trainee shuddered. "Yeah," she agreed. "What is there even around these parts, anyway? I mean.. everything looks dangerous."

Speaking of which, Reine had never seen anything resembling food on the island- no poultry, or livestock, and did they even have fields to plant things on? Maybe the 'food' they ate was purposely made gloopy and gross so no one could tell what it really was.

Ugghhhh.

"I didn't think to bring one," she admitted sheepishly. "But those goggles are cool!" Reine made a mental note to cling to Kat, when they did head back. "Wish I had something glowy, too."
