Mia sighed as she looked up at the sky. It was a sunny day, the sky blue and devoid of clouds, but there was a harsh wind blowing and the feeling of late November had finally set in. And further to the west a gray bank of clouds was rolling in. It suited the solitary girl's mood. The bobcat mononoke was strolling quite deep in the woods near the town that existed around Makai Royal Academy. The trees were mostly bare and leafless, a few still having brightly colored clusters on their branches here and there. The rest of the leaves that still hung on the trees were dead and limp for the most part, handfuls blowing away with every gust of wind that shook the trees.

This solemn mood suited the girl as she continued her aimless walk. Her heart was heavy, that familiar feeling of loneliness settling deep in her chest. It wasn't as bad as some days, but Mia once again had no idea where most of the people in the Academy she knew were. She knew there were groups of them who didn't have class now, but where they were, she couldn't say. Those whose location she did know she hated to bother, as they'd already eaten breakfast together earlier in the day, or been in class together. So, Mia was alone again, but not by choice. The paranoia that everyone was out without her and excluding her, intentionally or not, was creeping over her again, leading her into a small funk, a dip in her normally sunny personality, but one that was a well-known companion.

To combat the feeling, Mia turned up the volume on her music player, the wistful, but not depressing, songs she was listening only furthering her mood. The girl meandered through the woods, lost in her own little world, trying to escape some of her minor insecurities. Finding a clump of trees that formed a little cove that blocked out the wind, the young mononoke settled herself in them. Mia began to idly pick at the still green grass when she spotted a clump of small, violet flowers. She smiled, not her usual bright one, but a softer, more private one. That such colorful things were still growing in the chill made the girl happy, a small unexpected surprise to her day. Leaning over to inspect them, the girl gently bent them toward her with a couple of fingers, leaning over the rest of the way to admire the spots of color in an otherwise fairly barren scene.

It was a typical day for Kain to be out in the woods, rummaging through the layer of dead leaves for any possible plant-life he hadn't seen. He had been wondering around the place for hours until he finally settled under a fairly large tree, tired and chilly from the harsh winds that twisted into the underbrush of the woods. The tree was thicker than most in the area and seemed to have a dark brownish gray tint to its dead body. Completely stripped of its leaves, it made a nice bedding for Kain as he laid, tilted, against the tree. His scarf was pulled up and over his nose, to keep his nose hidden from the cold so he didn't wake up to a runny nose. His golden-colored hair moved slightly across his face as the wind curved around his currently sleeping figure.

He slept almost soundlessly, like a young boy who was taking a nap after a long day of playing. A few deep breaths escaped his lips occasionally, but he didn't snore. His face was paler than usual, the cold and crisp air draining his face of most of its color. His soft hair shielded his eyes, blocking the sunlight out of his eyes so he can sleep peacefully. That is, until he heard a slight sound from a distance that woke him; a soft and almost soundless tune that played in his ears. He couldn't tell what it was, but when he tired listening closely, a sudden rush of wind drowned out the sound.

Someone is nearby. Kain came to the conclusion as slowly sat up with a yawn. No animal near enough made those slight sounds that he knew of, so he thought about what it could be until he remembered that there was a witch school nearby. He couldn't tell if the intruder was a teacher or student or how many there were, but he was curious to find out. He used the tree trunk to help himself up, stretching out his aching back that hurt from the angle he slept in. He quickly looked behind him to make sure his wings were hidden as he patted his butt and legs of any leaves. Some color lifted into Kain's face as his blood ran through his veins faster now that he was awake and moving. He was fully awake and ready. Now, to see what is going on.

As quietly as he could, he followed the crunching sounds to a cove, where he saw a young girl bent over and admiring the small flowers that lingered there. Curiously, he watched her, wondering why she was in such a place at the woods - alone. He hoped he was quiet has he tried to slip his way closer to her, keeping along the trees, but there were so many leaves and sticks on the earth. Trying to be sneaky and maneuver around a pile of thin sticks, he stepped on a stick that hid under some leaves, breaking it right in half. He paused and took a deep breath.

Mia was enjoying the solitude of the woods, the gusts of wind keeping her company like their own people. As she was admiring the flower, she got the oddest sensation, one that people in the woods alone often experience, of being watched. She looked up for a second, but the woods seemed deserted, so she returned to the flower. 'I wish I had brought my sketch pad,' the mononoke thought with a sigh. She wasn't a great artist, but she often found she could sketch smaller things better. And she would have liked to try capturing the splash of color.

After only a second of looking back at the flower, though, she heard a branch snap. Her head shot up as if on instinct, her ears straight up. Sitting still, Mia's ears swiveled back and forth, trying to hear any small, indistinct sounds. There seemed to definitely be something around, as she had the same feeling. Relying on her animal senses for once, the girl sniffed the air gingerly.
'Is that...pumpkin?' she wondered fleetingly. Turning her head to follow the smell, the girl's eyes widened a fraction as she suddenly spotted a bright, yellow spot between the trees.

It was another person, a young man. Had it been a season where there were more leaves on the trees, Mia probably wouldn't have spotted him, but the bareness of their surroundings did nothing to hide his brightly colored clothing.
"Oh, hello," Mia greeted him, still surprised. She hadn't been prepared to see anyone, and was now somewhat thrown off balance, by having been so deep in her own thoughts.
