The Wheat Fields
This is where the wheat is grown and harvested. Most would say that it is the life of Panem because without these fields, much of the nation's food would not be produced.

xxxℋαиℯ ℰя℩s ℘ℯии xxxx⊷⊷⊷⊷⊷⊷⊷⊷⊷⊷⊷ xxxxxƉιsтɍιcт иιие Pulling the hood from his hoodie up onto his head, Hane walked from the main path into the fields. Even being as tall as he was, it was still easy for him to be lost in the taller grain. One of the reasons he enjoyed walking through the fields. Sure he could have been using his time better, there were a lot of other things he could be doing than catching his death of a cold in the rain. Hane liked walking through the fields though. Nice place to be alone, avoid too much crowd.
Hane knew it was a bit hypocritical for him to be there. Not needing to work for a living yet in life. So maybe it wasn't all the safest for him either. A bit vulnerable to taunting or envy of the other citizens of District 9. Did he really think about this or keep it in mind? Nope. If he did, would he be there anyway? Yup. It wasn't like Hane was a small guy. He was easily capable of defending himself. Another reason why he wasn't worried.
Oddly enough, he wasn't worried about catching a cold either. Even if it was still continuously raining. Sort of defecting the point of his shower that morning. Eh, it had been worth it when he'd had it. Now he just let himself relax and be relaxed by the constant taps of rain drops against his back and head. It felt like a mini massage almost. A continuous rhythm of beats against his back. Light enough to not hurt or harm him and heavy enough to be felt.
Looking up, Hane saw he had landed himself somewhere in the middle of an acre of the field. Alone. Wet. Relaxed. Calm. Content. Just how he wanted. Of course, being out in the middle of the field, there was no cover. There was the barn, but that would mean he'd have to walk the way he'd come. Also it would mean he'd probably be questioned of why he was soaked and walking in the fields in the first place. No. He'd stay right there.
Hane stopped walking and looked at the ground below him. Of course it had been raining a while now. But when you got far enough into the fields, where not too many people bothered to go to, there was a slight difference. When there weren't many workers harvesting in that area, the grain grew thicker. When it was thick enough, it sort of shielded the soil below. So, even if it got a few spatters, it wasn't muddy or soaking. Which was what he'd been looking for.
Hane got down and parked some of the stalks, folding them out of his way and sat down on the soil. Not wet. Not yet. It would have to rain a bit longer for that. He folded his legs in front of him and laid his arms over them. In his hands was a head of wheat. As he absentmindedly pulled it apart, he stared at it but had zoned out. Letting himself think a bit.

xxxαввץ єℓιzα ρєии xxxx⊷⊷⊷⊷⊷⊷⊷⊷⊷⊷⊷ xxxxxƉιsтɍιcт иιие Drenched from the pouring rain, Abby wished she had gotten a rain jacket or at least an umbrella before venturing outside to look for her brother. But that was the thing about the young girl, she didn't think things through, only acted. Abby knew Hane liked to come to the wheat fields for some alone time, but she needed to be with some human contact. No one was up yet at the house, and she didn't much like her sister's or her twin's company for that matter. As she searched for Hane, the girl kept getting whipped in the face with the wheat and her wet matted hair kept falling into her face. She had the urge to just turn back and walk home, but she really wanted to see her brother. Abby opened her mouth to call out for Hane, but with the claps of thunder going off every twenty seconds it wasn't worth her breathe. She closed her mouth, her face set in a determined way as she looked harder. She shivered as she kept walking, her pace now robotic and stiff. The cold razor like rain was starting to affect her small body. Her already soaked T-shirt absorbed more water even if that were possible, and her feet were becoming blistered in her tennis shoes. Abby could withstand any type of weather expect rain. Rain was like her freaking kryptonite,it drained her body and made the blond feel like s**t. Abby swallowed hard, her tiny but powerful arms were wrapped around herself trying to provide some warmth. Finally out of the corner of her eye she saw some movement. The blond turned toward it catching a glimpse of Hane's hooded head. Finally! she thought as Abby quickly went over to her older brother. The young girl tapped his arm, and walked around him to face him head on. She could visibly see she had startled the hooded teenager, and for some reason that pleased her. It meant her stealth was becoming better than she thought. ⊣Wheat Fields⊢⊸⊸⊸⊸⊸⊣Cold and Wet⊢⊸⊸⊸⊸⊸⊣Got nothing⊢⊸⊸⊸⊸⊸⊣Healthy⊢⊸⊸⊸⊸⊸⊣Hane⊢ --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A sxxxt h exxxw o r l dxxxf a l l sxxxa w a yxxxa n dxxxIxxxc a n txxxf i n dxxxaxxxr e a s o n A sxxxt h exxxw o r l dxxxt u r n sxxxt oxxxg r e y I t sxxxk i l l i n gxxxm exxxu n w i l l i n g l yxxxa n dxxxIxxxa mxxxj u s txxxt h exxxs a m exxxa sxxxy o u

xxxℋαиℯ ℰя℩s ℘ℯии xxxx⊷⊷⊷⊷⊷⊷⊷⊷⊷⊷⊷ xxxxxƉιsтɍιcт иιие It didn't take long for Hane to peal the grain from the wheat head and moving on to the next. Soon he was covered in little grains of wheat. Clinging to his jeans and arms. It would be annoying to pick them all out. But it was almost worth it. Thinking the morning away alone. First his thoughts had started at his dream. The soft sand under his hands, rubbing against his back. Getting everywhere on his skin and hair. Warm comfortable sun making him almost drift asleep in the dream itself. The dream had been so vivid, so real. Hane wished it was.
Which had brought him back to current events. Rain pouring around him but the stalks of wheat protecting him for the most part. His lower back and thighs were almost dry again. The rain didn't seem to lessen. When a clap of thunder sounded again, he went back to his thoughts. This time going in a different direction. This time to the Games.
Hane only had one more year before he was home free. So to speak. He didn't want to be in the Hunger Games. You knew you were dead the moment you stepped onto the arena field. Or made an enemy of the careers. Which really, if you weren't a career or useful, you were their enemy. Hane was fine with that though. The careers were jerks. Spoiled brats who viewed the Hunger games were a game for entertainment. Pretty much the Capitol but with a different name. Maybe he was being hypocritical. But he wasn't a stuck up snob about his life.
He couldn't help think of the current games. Which, he couldn't help find the painful irony, was at a beach. Well, sort of. Maybe that was why he was dreaming of the beach. He didn't know. He did know, though, that he didn't want to go to the beach if it meant dying. He could wait. Hane thought about the district ten kids. He'd sort of stopped keeping track of it this time around. After watching eighteen years worth, you loose track or give up counting. Both of which he had done.
Hane had long since stopped paying attention to things around him by now. So when he felt a tap on his arm, he jumped a bit. When the smaller figure came into view, he was a bit surprised. He didn't think any of the family was up yet. Or outside. Then again, this was Abby. She, like him, wasn't exactly like the rest of their family. Well, their whole family was sort of a clump of oddballs. It didn't take him any time to see her shivering and soaked. As well as looking a bit paler than normal.
"Abby your soaking wet." He said gently. He scooted over, making space for her in the sheltered area. "Mom and Dad will kill me if you get a cold or a fever." He said with a soft smile. Reaching up, he unzipped the hoodie and pulled it off. When Abby sat next to him, he draped it over her shoulders. Hoping the warm and dry clothing article would help her a bit.
"Everything okay? You almost never set foot outside when it's raining." He said, now a bit concerned. Though whether he should be or not, he didn't know. Maybe she just wanted someone to talk to. He remembered waking up earlier that morning briefly to see her sleeping on his floor. Just barely awake enough to put another blanket over her. Knowing the cold hard floor can drain the heat from a body, especially a smaller one like her's.

xxxαввץ єℓιzα ρєии xxxx⊷⊷⊷⊷⊷⊷⊷⊷⊷⊷⊷ xxxxxƉιsтɍιcт иιие Abby shivered into the warm jacket that Hane had draped over her shoulders after she had sat down next to him. She took in his basically dry form with grain all over his clothing. She had to admit with his hair plastered to his face, and drying clothes her brother was a sight to see at the moment. She didn't dare smirk or show any type of making fun of her older brother though. She wasn't here for that. At the comment of Abby catching a cold or a fever she shrugged off Hane's worry. They both truly knew if the girl got sick it was on her, not her brother. Her father would have a conniption over it and her mother would make a huge deal about it and call the doctor for a house call. Something that wasn't truly necessary but would happen if Mute got sick. They worried more about her health than the rest of their children. Abby couldn't understand why though, whenever she asked any of them about it all of them would get real quite and sad. The exception of her twin of course. He didn't have clue in the ordeal, and didn't want to know either. If it didn't happen to him then he didn't want to know. Abby shrugged again, hearing the concern in Hane's voice. Should she tell him why she was actually out there? Or just bullshit around the main reason until she lost her nerve completely and bailed? Nine times out of ten she wouldn't even open her mouth to speak. Very rarely did she do that, and she only spoke to Hane or her twin brother when they were alone. The young girl stayed quite as she watched the steady rain fall around them, none of it hitting them directly. She was relieved by that, spending almost an hour in the rain took a lot of Abby and if it kept up like this Hane would probably have to carry the small girl home. She cased her green gaze to her older brother, her mouth opening the shutting. She didn't know where to start. She didn't know how to form the words in able to start speaking. Abby looked down breaking her gaze from her brother and began to pick at her muddied up shoes. Finally she spoke. It was more like a whisper and Hane would have to strain to hear her above the thundering sky. "I have a feeling I'm going to picked this year." Abs didn't have to explain to him what she meant. They both knew the games were coming to a close and the capital would soon be picking teenagers again. Usually this wouldn't bother her, being picked to play in the Hunger Games. She always viewed it as what it said in the title, as a game. Yes, there was only one winner and the losers did die but she never took it seriously as she should have like her older siblings. But for the first time in her life she was scared of it. Abby didn't know if was because the rain was draining the life out of her or what. But the blond was truly scared of being picked. She wasn't worried about surviving, she knew she could last longer than any of the teenagers in all twelve Districts. It was just being ripped away from her family, and the possibility of never seeing them again. ⊣Wheat Fields⊢⊸⊸⊸⊸⊸⊣Cold and Wet⊢⊸⊸⊸⊸⊸⊣Got nothing⊢⊸⊸⊸⊸⊸⊣Healthy⊢⊸⊸⊸⊸⊸⊣Hane⊢ --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A sxxxt h exxxw o r l dxxxf a l l sxxxa w a yxxxa n dxxxIxxxc a n txxxf i n dxxxaxxxr e a s o n A sxxxt h exxxw o r l dxxxt u r n sxxxt oxxxg r e y I t sxxxk i l l i n gxxxm exxxu n w i l l i n g l yxxxa n dxxxIxxxa mxxxj u s txxxt h exxxs a m exxxa sxxxy o u

xxxℋαиℯ ℰя℩s ℘ℯии xxxx⊷⊷⊷⊷⊷⊷⊷⊷⊷⊷⊷ xxxxxƉιsтɍιcт иιие Hane wasn't convinced when Abby shrugged off his concern. He was still sure that at least both of them would get a scolding. If not for Abby's health or soon lack of then both of their's together. Or putting their parents in worry. Not like they could really help it. If they woke up before everyone else and wanted to go for a walk, not their fault.
Hane listened to Abby speak, which was a surprise but enjoyable. Even if it wasn't a long explanation and even if it was soft. He enjoyed listening to Abby talk. When she did, she had good things to say. His eyes softened as well as his smile. He wrapped an arm around her smaller shoulders and squeezed gently. He understood completely where she was coming from. Well, at least he thought he did. There wasn't really much he could say right away besides "It's going to be okay Abby." Gently.
It wasn't a lie. If Abby did get picked and was truly frightened or scared she wouldn't see them, Hane wouldn't hesitate to volunteer in her place. Even if she did hate him for it. He'd do what he could to make sure his sister was safe. And however he could, happy. If that meant risking his life to spare her own, so be it.
"You're only in there twice Abs. And even if you were picked, now or later, and someone couldn't take your place. We would still give you help along the way. I'd make sure of it." He told her, still watching her. It was also true. If Abby did make it into the Games, Hane would do what he could to support her. Sponsor her, send things into her to help her. He would never rid himself of the guilt if she went in and he didn't try to help her, ending up getting her killed.
Hane gave her another gentle side hug and leaned over, kissing her hair lightly. Another crack of lightning struck above them and the rain seemed to get harder. Now it had made it's way into their temporary shelter. Time to get going. "Now, whoever the blame is on, you or me, I'm not going to let you get a cold because of me." He said. Standing, Hane got out of the small shelter and turned around. Not caring that it got mud on his knees, he knelt down in front of her so she could climb on his back. "C'mon. You can use my jacket to shield your head for a good portion of the walk home. I'll try and see how covered I can keep us." He told her.
He waited for her to climb on and wrap her arms around him before standing. He held his hands back and clasped them together under Abby and her legs. Then he started walking through the field once more. His pace steady and confident. Knowing where he was headed. Of course there was no reason they shouldn't be. He spent a good amount of time getting lost in the fields that there was hardly any place he'd not been too and been able to get his sense of direction. -Next Post Penn's House-

xxxℋαиℯ ℰя℩s ℘ℯии xxxx⊷⊷⊷⊷⊷⊷⊷⊷⊷⊷⊷ xxxxxƉιsтɍιcт иιие It had been several days from the Reaping yet not much changed in Hane Penn's life. Other than his father being away as a mentor. He had watched the tribute parade along with everyone else. Helped his mother with the twins and hung out or talked to Quinn on occasion. Life went on as life usually did. Even his lack of school attendance. Which was ironic what with his mother being a teacher. Then again he was seventeen. School attendance wasn't quite as important at that age. The schools taught the same thing every year just a step longer. The only reason he might need to go to school was if he was a career. But this was District Nine. He wasn't a career.
So as normal on a day he wanted to get away and just think to himself, Hane had headed to the fields. The rain had mercifully broken for long enough to allow him time to get out of the house. There weren't too many places he would have gone. And really only one that wasn't too crowded. So as he walked through the path of the wheat field, he was content to find that there were maybe twenty or so workers out. And not too far out. So he kept walking and thinking, intent on getting to the edge of the field. Not quite the border with District Seven. That was too far for today. On a nicer day maybe. But not today. Today he was just going up to the road leading to the fields.
As he walked his thoughts drifted. Back to the day of the Reaping. Thankfully the night prior to the Reaping hadn't been either high strung or tense. Rather he had gone to bed with a clear head and no worry about the next day. However, when he had gotten up, the house had been a mess. His little brother was fretting, someone was crying, and Hane had instantly gotten a head ache. Before even starting with himself, he'd helped calm down his brother and get him ready for the Reaping. Then he had checked on everything else to see if anyone needed a hand with something before getting himself put together.
They had left for the Reaping as they usually did. Parents and Hane in back with the other siblings in front. Not in lines or rows but that was just how the group spread. If anything Hane was probably behind his parents more often than he was in front or beside them. Out of habit he had watched each sibling with different thoughts. He looked at Abby and thought about her ominous feeling only a month or so before that she would be picked. He looked at his brother and hoped the younger boy would be okay and muscle through the Reaping like every other year. Then he looked at Quinn.
Of course looking at his oldest sister he thought of her Tesserae. Quinn had known about the tesserae and not approved at all. But he couldn't really stop her if that was what she wanted. Plus their parents hadn't exactly done anything yet. Hane had sighed and split away from the group to where a line was with some other kids he recognized. After poking his finger and giving them his blood, he'd gone straight to where kids of his age and gender were. No one spoke to him longer than a greeting. Hane remembered how relieved he'd been when no one from his family had been drawn. Yet ashamed at his relief. Two kids were still being sent to their death.
Present Hane shook off the rest of the memory and looked at where he had walked. Far enough for him. Instead of going deep into the grain, he just sat on the edge of the path, back to or against the stalks. He pulled off his sunglasses and absentmindedly doodled in the dirt under his feet with one of the tips. Nothing in particular, just little patterns and shapes.

ღValentineღ district 9 Valentine walked to the wheat fields. Her heart was heavy and her head swimming. Was Avril okay, was DOC okay? How were they doing. She couldn't live like this! She hated not knowing. She didn't know if the two children would be alright. Avril was so small and weak. How could she volunteer for Ko and Doc, poor Doc, she helped him beat of bullies. How could she trust they would be able to protect themselves? Her hand went up to her neck as she tried to grab her dog tags but then remembered that she had given them to DOC as his reminder of the district. She ran a hand through her hair and sat. Just sat there hidden in the wheat. She hadn't seen Ko since the reaping. How could she? Ko was a wreck. She remembered sitting there and holding Ko for hours and hours. She then remembered seeing Avril and DOC. Hopefully it wouldn't be the last time. She prayed it wasn't. She looked up at the cloudless blue sky and lay back. How was she and Ko going to help protect Doc and Avril now? They were miles away........"Please come home." She breathed softly. "Please."

xxxℋαиℯ ℰя℩s ℘ℯии xxxx⊷⊷⊷⊷⊷⊷⊷⊷⊷⊷⊷ xxxxxƉιsтɍιcт иιие On days like these, when the crowds weren’t prominent and the Peacekeepers were few, Hane liked to play around with the wheat. Not so much play as boredly strip it from the stalk and let it drift in the wind. Even though the rain was gone, the wind was still around. And he was covered in the little seeds. He could feel them littering his hair. Clinging to his jacket. But that didn’t bother him much. Instead he reached for a stalk and broke it.
As he pealed the seeds off, one by one, he realized he could hear a voice near by. Female. Young. She sounded worried. As he caught a few words, he understood why. He knew he probably would be going through some anxiety issues had someone he knew, never mind family, been drawn into the Games. He could honestly say he had had a heart attack when his best friend had been drawn several years earlier. Only to be saved by a volunteer.
A new voice broke into his thoughts, causing Hane to look up. He smiled in greeting to Melody. Last time he’d seen her had been the horrid day Abby had run away. Again. He felt awful for the way his sister had acted because of the new girl. In a way it had been cute. She didn’t want to loose her older brother. But it was also childish. Abby needed to realize she would never loose him, but he was growing up. As was she.
Of course it hadn’t been much of a search that day. They had just needed to find the one girl who didn’t belong. Shivering in the middle of the crowd. Looking as ill as possible. The surprise had been to find her in a way too large jacket. Who’s, he could only guess. Still, he had been disappointed to not see Melody much after that. His parents had been busy, and they had little time to talk. Hane would have let her work, it was a job, and everyone needed money now and then. Plus he wouldn’t have minded her around. But it wasn’t his choice.
“Yup. Though I’m sure my absence won’t be missed too much.” Hane answered with a smile. He patted the ground beside him. Inviting her to join him if she wished. “With the Games going on and all, everyone is more preoccupied really. Not to mention my father being away as mentor. How about you? What’s your excuse?” Hane didn't mention the fact that half the time he wasn't welcomed at the school. Be it by teachers or students. Some of the teacher for who he was or what he was. By the students, mainly because he just didn't have too many friends. And a lot of people were jealous of his lifestyle. Even if he didn't exactly use it to his advantage or against them. The real difference between him and them was the fact he didn't have to work in the fields.

She smiled as she accepted the invitation to lie down next to Hane on the ground. She then replied him, "I doubt I will be missed much either. It had been busy lately, but I had my final reaping day. I am so relieved of that. Most people would care less if I was at school or not. It is not like we learn anything new anymore." As she finished she looked away from him and up at the sky. The clouds were puffy and were very large.

{Because ipods and coding don't mix}
"Congratulations." Hane said to her about it being her final reaping. He was only a year away until his own. Yay. Even so he wasn't worried about being drawn. He didn't take tesserae, so his name wasn't in there more times than it should be. He laughed a little when she said there was nothing new to learn at school and nodded in agreement. "Nope, just the history of our supposed to be great nation. The same every time." He mentally smiled when he remembered one definition of insanity. 'Doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results.' It sounded like the definition of the Capitol really.

ღValentineღ district 9 Valentine heard voices and sat up abruptly as she listened. She walked through the large wheat fields, her hands grazing over the grains as she walked. She stopped before the two. She had seen them around, but never really associated herself with them. "Hello." She said with a smile before taking a seat. Maybe this is what she needed. Some time to talk and associate with others as she waited on the games to begin. Maybe this would keep her mind off Avril and Doc. "I hope you don't mind, I heard you talking and thought I would come join." She said softly.

She really hoped that. Hane was a really nice guy and didn't deserve to be in the games, but no one ever does. She looked toward the sky again as she listened to him. She then replied, "I know what you mean. That is so boring and half the time I really don't care." The Capitol thinks so highly of itself, but never thinks of us. She doubted that the capitol citizens knew what all the districts did. Melody then heard another voice. She sat up and looked over at the girl. She kind of noticed her, maybe from school.
