After his rude awakening to four paws, Athene was finally getting used to being well a cat. It had helped that he'd managed to latch onto a food source of sorts – whoever would have guessed that the owner of his favourite little cupcake bakery had a soft spot for cats.
Which is why the little feline was trotting up the pavement, on his way for a spot of breakfast – after all despite the fact that Athene would not have said no to a bit of cake, there was no way that the dark eared feline was going to turn down the bits of bread roll on offer.

Gigi's natural mode of transportation was the pigtail-flying jog, and she tore down the street in cloppy brown boots with heels that were entirely unsuitable for such a gait. Not much stopped her when she was on a mission, but unexpected kittens would do it. She slowed, then came to an unsteady halt a few feet from the little green-and-bronze creature, a bit of Destiny City caution showing as she hesitated to come closer - monsters were a reality here. But this - this looked like a kitty to her. If a strangely coloured one. And she might have shrugged her shoulders and continued on, but the golden star rang all kinds of bells. She'd had a dream like this.
Crouching down, she held out a cautious hand for sniffing, with a distinct possibility of petting to follow. Definitely a real cat, she concluded. The green band appeared to be fur, whereas the dream cat had worn an actual lace ruff. She could even remember the feel of it, under her fingers.
"I'm asleep," she said, surprise tainting her tone, as if saying it out loud would make it true. "I'm dreaming this, star kitty. I need another coffee."
Bakery sold coffee, right? She glanced from the (adorable) green kitty to the bakery window. Yep, coffee machine, thank goodness. Still, she remained crouched on the street, hand outstretched, because kitty!

Athene hadn't really noticed the morning comings and goings, caught up as he was in waiting for the bakery owner to unlatch the door and notice him. The hand penetrating his line of vision however was enough to – momentarily – distract his attention from the wonderful early morning baking smells making his kitty tummy rumble.
The hand was given a curious glance, feline green-flecked eyes taking in the curly brown hair and familiar-looking honey golden eyes of the girl crouched before him.
Hang on a minute, honey golden eyes? Athene was in the process of giving the fingers a curious nose when it struck him that the was someone he actually recognised – Miss Gigi – his friend from Meadowview. He gave the hand a friendly rub using the top of his head.

"Aww, aren't you friendly!" And soft. Gigi gently ran her fingers over the deep green head, delighted to receive such a warm reception. Obviously this was a tame cat, maybe even a lost cat.
She glanced around, in case an owner was within sight, but there didn't seem to be anyone obviously holding a cat basket. She did, however, notice that they were in the middle of the sidewalk. Moving slowly, so as not to startle the cat, she shuffled sideways until she was crouched close beside the bakery door, hand still poised to pet the little furry head.
"Where's your collar? I bet someone's looking for you."

Athene had found out that he quite liked being petted, so much so that the dark-eared cat was content enough to delay his spot of breakfast to allow his golden-eyed friend to pet him – not that Miss Gigi would recognise him in this form. Actually come to think of it she wouldn't recognise him in his human form either, at least not as Sailor Athene – apparently it was something to do with the magic.
The senshi-turned-cat hadn't really been paying attention to the words the other was speaking while the petting was going on, but he looked up once the stroking stopped and gently butted her hand. Athene wasn't sure if he should reveal to his friend that he could actually understand every word she was saying. In the meantime the dark-eared cat wouldn't say no to more petting.

Gigi giggled at the furry-soft demand, and resumed stroking the cat, slowly coaxing him closer to her, in case he took it into his little head to run out onto the road. That would be terrible. Early-morning traffic was not a kitty's friend.
"Bossy kitty! Okay, I'm petting!" she told him, scritching behind his ear with a gentle fingertip. The little star was really clear on his fur, and just to check, she brushed her finger over that, too. Maybe it was some kind of fancy cat breed. Hadn't there been some puppy overseas with a heart-pattern in his spots? She remembered cooing over the photos with the other kids at school at the time.
"But what are you doing out here in the street?" she asked him again, still petting. "Did you run away from home?" He was so tame. She wondered if he'd let her pick him up for a hug. Most cats wouldn't, but you never knew, and she'd have a better chance of finding his owner if she could take him with her.

Athene wasn't going to say no to more petting. As far as the dark-eared cat was concerned Gigi could pet him for as long as she wanted and if he had been a real cat maybe he would even have purred. In fact maybe it was a little scary just how enjoyable being petted was stuck as he was in this furry form. Not that it meant Athene was getting used to being stuck this way, not even a little – or more to the point not that he'd admit to it.
A sad look crossed his face at Gigi's question about running away from home. Saffy's apartment – he missed it. Missed his small room, missed his bed, his jewellery-making supplies... In fact he was finding there was quite a lot he missed. It would be nice to wake up and find that everything was back to normal – or even better had been just a dream, but as things passed and he remained a cat, Athene found himself wondering if it was something permanent. A scary, scary thought.

Gigi crouched lower beside the cat, worried now that it really was lost. The little guy looked so small and lonely, and the way he kept pushing to be petted, he seemed completely starved for attention. Or maybe just starved, she thought. His fur was soft under her hand, he seemed bright-eyed and alert. Gigi was not a world expert on cats, but he seemed pretty well looked-after. If he was lost just today, his owner might still be around. Maybe even close, in one of the shops? The bakery was nearest, so that would be a good place to start.
"Poor kitty. It's a big world, isn't it? Don't worry, I'll help you find your people, okay? I bet they're just inside having cake?"
How did you go about picking up a cat, anyway? She shifted her petting from his little head to the soft collar-like marking on his chest. If he took that calmly, maybe she could just slip her hand under his stomach and lift him around the middle.
"I'm just gonna. Um. Lift you up don't freak out. Okay? Do you like cake?"

Athene’s ears pricked up in alarm as the curly-haired girl started talking about finding his owner – oh no this wasn’t good, not good at all! It was one thing for the bakery owner to feed him bits of bread, another for him however good-intentioned to be reported as missing – missing cats got sent to catteries and the last thing Athene wanted or needed was to end up being stuck in a cattery. For a start they’d expect him to eat actual cat food there! In fact the dark-eared cat was so worried was at even the thought of being trapped in a cattery, Gigi’s comment about cake went entirely unheard.
“I’m not a lost cat” it took a few minutes for it to sink in that he’d spoken the words aloud, Athene tensing slightly as he waited to see the curly-haired girl’s reaction.

It spoke! Gigi's hands flew back from the creature she'd been about to pick up, that she'd been patting, like the little think was suddenly electric. For a moment her mouth hung open, and her eyes so wide she was sure she would never blink again.
"Oh. Um. Sorry?"
It still looked like a cat. Obviously it was a cat. It must just mean that it wasn't lost, in which case, how rude of her to try and carry off a talking cat! In an absurd, wonderland-y kind of way. The girl took a deep breath, and eyes not leaving the kitty, pinched the inside of her forearm sharply between her fingernails till it left a little mark. The cat remained. Everything else around them seemed normal and real, not like a dream. Maybe it was just the talking she was imagining.
"If you're not lost, why are you out here?" she asked, not sure if she was hoping more for a meow or another verbal response.

From the looks of Gigi’s reaction, it didn’t look like any more petting was forthcoming, a feeling that the dark-eared cat refused to acknowledge as disappointment slipping through him as he shifted to more of a sitting position. Given the way that the curly-haired girl’s hands had moved away from him and the shocked expression on her face, Athene had half-expected Gigi to leg it but she remained where she was despite pinching her arm while staring at him.
At her question he admitted once making sure that no one else seemed to be around to overhear “The lady at the bakery is really nice” he flicked his tail before adding “And the bread she makes always tastes really good.”

Gigi craned to look back up at the bakery window, just in case that had turned into a mushroom or something. But no, still a bakery, and she could still see the coffee machine behind the cake display, so inviting. She seemed to have the strangest dreams when she slept, it was so much nicer to be fully alert.
She turned back to the cat, watching it with far more caution than when she'd thought it was lost, but since it still seemed so friendly, there wasn't any immediate reason to run off.
"I guess that makes sense. I didn't know cats liked bread," she said.

“Well I’d prefer cake” Athene admitted wistfully. It seemed not even being stuck as a cat could do anything for the senshi-turned-cat’s sweet tooth. “Or even cookies” the smells of the fresh-baked biscuits were especially inviting. “But bread is so much better than that stuff they call cat food and fresh-baked bread like they do here is even better.” Not that the dark-eared cat was going there ever . There was no way he would ever be desperate enough to resort to eating cat food. Not even if the cat thing ended up being a permanent thing.

"You don't like cat food?" Gigi asked doubtfully. "Are you really a real cat?"
Cake-eating cat seemed awfully far-fetched to her. Everyone knew cats ate milk and tuna. And mice, but that was icky to think about. But the poor thing still sounded so sad. Gigi was sure something was wrong, even if he wasn't lost. Gigi had never owned a cat, or any pet really. It had always been one of those 'when you're old enough' promises, that fell by the wayside when her dad moved out. Her mum loved animals, but they made it hard to travel. She doubted she could bring a kitty home, even for a little while.
She fished around in her pockets, It hadn't occurred to her to save any breakfast, but so early in the morning, she hadn't had time to spend her lunch money. It wasn't much, but she was prepared to bet the bakery would give her a coffee-and-cake deal. She just hoped she wasn't imagining this, or she'd look pretty silly.
"I'll get you something," she announced, holding out the palmful of coins for the cat to see. "What would you like? Cupcake, croissant, danish?"

“Have you seen cat food?” Athene asked quietly. “It looks icky.” Okay that probably was because he was a human temporarily trapped in cat form – and it was temporary, he had to keep telling himself that. Anyway the dark-eared cat was sure that if he ever got a cat then he was not going to feed it on the stuff that masqueraded as cat food. Bits of fish and the odd piece of meat probably wouldn’t be the cheaper option, but Athene was pretty sure the cat would prefer it much more to the so called cat food.
So caught up was the dark-eared cat in his thoughts about cat food and its ickiness in general, that Gigi holding up a palm full of coins took him by surprise. “I love cupcakes” he admitted startled. Was his curly-haired friend – well friend in his human civilian form – really offering to buy him breakfast?
