His kitty tummy was grumbling again. Athene had been trying hard not to think about it, but the hunger pangs were becoming more and more insistent.

He missed his warm bed, the ability to rustle up a snack, whenever and wherever… Although that bit of warm sausage that he’d poached had been nice. Athene hadn’t wanted to do it, but his tummy had been rumbling so hard and it had smelt so good and it had tasted even better. Too bad that he'd ended up being chased for his trouble.

His tummy growled again as he remembered the sausage, how good it had tasted. Maybe it was time to leave the park bench he’d let himself sprawl over and hunt down some food. Maybe he'd be lucky and some kind person would take pity on him. The little cat wasn’t picky – no mayonnaise, nothing raw and none of that cat food crap. Okay so maybe picky depended on the eye of the beholder.

Grant was walking through the park with a sandwich from his favorite shop in hand, two bites already taken out of it and a third on the way. He ate in now hurry, having a long period between needing to be anywhere to fill. And what better way then a walk through the park before heading back to his place?

He went to find a nice bench to sit on, one that looked like no one was there. When he got closer, though, he saw the kitty.

"Oh, I'm sorry," he said politely, as ever, though he was presumably talking to an animal, "I didn't know this was taken."

The thing about Grant was, he knew very little about guardian cats and what he did know he shoved into the back of his mind and pretended it did not exist. Maybe it was denial, who knew. In any case, he had no incling that he was talking to something that might understand him. He would have talked to a dog or a squirrel or a particularly large and noticible bug in the same situation.

Animals were still alive, after all. He would not more be rude to them then he was to other people. And he could never be rude to a person. His sandwich smelled of bacon and eggs, and he held it in two hands in front of him, watching the cat and trying to decide if he should go find another park bench or not.

Athene stared up at the blond-haired man in front of his bench for a moment, grey eyes alight with curiosity. The young man in front of him looked too old to be a young teen or – thank the goodness – a kid. Not that Athene actually had anything against little kids mind. At least he hadn't before being stuck as a cat, however the dark-eared cat had learnt the hard way that quite a few kids seemed inordinately fond of pulling kitty tails – not something he was keen to experience again.

The blond standing in front of his bench didn't seem to be the type to go about pulling kitty tails though and... “Is that bacon I smell?!” If it was possible for kitty eyes to go wide, then Athene's were almost pop-eyed, his nose twitching at the delicious bacon smells.

Grant was in his early twenties, and was fairly level headed when it came to most things. Probably because he had two levels of operation: he was either being very optimistic about whatever was going on, or using a grand mastery of denial to get through the harder times.

He smiled.

"It is! Would you like some?"

So Grant had not known the cat would speak back to him, but it happened and he just accepted it as it was presented. Maybe the bacon was bad or the eggs under done, and he was hallucinating, or maybe he had met one of those cats like he had in that whole space escapade.

Either way, he was just going to roll with the punches, and be nice about it to boot.

He dug out a few pieces of bacon and offered them to the cat, smiling and putting a napkin down so the cute kitty could eat some without getting them dirty. Cats ate off the floor all the time, but that didn't mean they had to. Maybe they liked their food being clean, too.

Oh shoot – Athene hadn't meant to actually say that out loud, wasn't sure that he was even supposed to be letting on to non-senshi or guardian cats that he was perfectly capable of the power of speech, however the smell of bacon had smelt sooo tempting to his rumbling tummy that it had kind of slipped out.

“I'd love some thank you” given that the man had already heard him speak, Athene figured that it was probably pointless pretending that he couldn't and the dark-eared cat was appreciative of the way the other had taken the trouble to set it out nicely on the napkin. He managed an appreciative “Thank you very much” before padding to the napkin and nibbling at the first piece of bacon.

Grant smiled happily. It was best not to question the things he didn't understand. Instead, he just rolled with what he saw and did his best to explain it away later. Denial, maybe, but he somehow made it work for himself and it got him through life with nothing but optimism and an upbeat attitude.

Talking cats were so the last of his problems. Not that he really had any.

Which was the point.

He smiled at the cat, noting that it didn't look like the typical kind. Not a breed he had ever seen, which meant it must have been the same as the space cats. He wondered, then if he would like to be pet or if he was above that. It was the same worry a lot of people in his position had, he was sure.

"Why are you out alone, kitty? Don't you have someone to look after you? It would not be good if you got hurt. Do you need any help?" He spoke easily, his mind turning, looking for the trouble so he could solve it. His eyes were always smiling, though.

Athene was mid-way through the second bit of bacon when the young man started speaking again. The dark-eared cat nodded his head once, his best attempt at the 'just a moment' gesture he would have made as a human before finishing off the bacon. Hey he'd had it drummed into him just how rude it was to speak with one's mouth full – no need to slip into bad habits just because he was currently stuck as a cat.

Once the second piece of bacon had been swallowed and his paws licked Athene responded to the other's question “I don't need any help – the bacon was plenty thank you.” He didn't want to go into the fact that as a senshi turned kitty he'd effectively been made homeless – it wasn't as he could present himself to Saffy in this form – and he was really really hoping that the kitty part would turn out to be temporary, or a bad dream. One of those really, really bad ones.

“My name's Athene by the way” introducing himself was a way to take his mind away from the depressing thought of potentially being stuck as a cat forever, besides it would be nice to have a name for the man kind enough to give him bacon.

Grant smiled as the cat nodded at him. Human mannerisms in a small animal were awesome and funny. He watched with the eagerness of a child watching a new episode of their favorite Saturday morning cartoon.

It was so great to see a polite cat that didn't want to talk with its mouth full. Even better than the cat talking, by itself. He had already accepted that part of it, anyway.

"It's nice to meet you, Athene! If you need any help, I'm more than willing. I mean, if you change your mind. I know you said you didn't need it, but you can always keep it in mind in case you do!" He chuckled, then blinked. "Oh, I'm sorry! My name is Grant."

He offered his hand to the cat, holding it low so he could put his little paw in it. If they kitty wanted to go home, Grant wouldn't keep him, but it was nice meeting him, either way.

“As I said the bacon was more than enough, but thank you again for offering.” Even though the dark-haired senshi-turned-cat wasn't about to take the blonde haired man up on it, it was still kind of the other to offer – after all it wasn't just anyone who would offer to help a total stranger. Even if the stranger came in the form of a talking cat. The 'thank you' was Athene's way of acknowledging it.

Smiling – or at least trying to, since Athene wasn't sure smiles showed up the same way on feline faces – still his voice was friendly as he carefully placing a bronze forepaw into the offered hand. “Pleased to meet you too Grant.” It was always nice to have a name to match the face.

Athene wasn't really in a hurry to move away from the bench, it made for a comfortable sprawl space and Grant was nice enough that the dark-eared cat was happy to share the space. Well okay more than nice enough – the blonde was easily one of the nicest people Athene had come across.

Grant smiled and chuckled. Those little person mannerisms were great. He really wished he could have a talking cat as a pet, just to see these behaviors more often. But then, he would feel bad for owning something smart enough to talk and that didn't need him to take care of it. That was the way of pets. He didn't own them, really, he was just their care taker.

His rabbits could attest to that, but they couldn't talk.

He shook the cat's paw carefully.

"It must be fun being a cat," he said after a moment, just imagining it. "You must be able to jump really high, and you're fast and agile. Is your sight really good? I wonder what it would be like to be a cat, but still be myself." He didn't know that people had actually been turned from humans into cats, which was why he wasn't asking for a comparison of cat to human. He accepted this was one of the same cats as in space, and they were magic.

Still, he smiled and imaged it, wondering how he would spend his day if he were a cat instead of a human. Could he still go to class? He imagined finding a job would be even harder.

Athene tucked into the last piece of bacon, re-cleaned his paws and then flopped back on the bench. Now that his tummy was full, the dark-eared cat was feeling content. Content enough to relax back into his sprawl.

He'd probably stay that way for a bit too, well at least for a bit. Right now the senshi-turned cat was happy enough for the company, for as long as Grant wished to provide it.

Later on, Athene would probably check out the kiddy playground. Much later one once the kids had vacated it for the day. Until then the dark-eared cat was happy enough with his bench – the playground was definitely more fun once even the hint of running into little fingers had vanished.
