It had been a good week for Gunju, the green leopard was thinking to himself as he lay sprawled on one of the lowest branches of a huge acacia tree next to the pitiful remains of a nest he had destroyed. His yawn was cut short as he started chuckling when he remembered his little prank with the parched leopardess… Aeylah, that was her name. Gunju wondered briefly if she was still alive but it was a thought that didn’t hold his interest for long. That little bit of mischief had happened a few days before and the leopard was already growing bored and in need for a new victim. He had little pity for them, these fools that came to him so willingly, desperate to put their trust on a friendly face. Gunju lived to see that surprised expression that always came with the realization that the green leopard wasn’t really going to help them sort out their troubles but instead mess things up even further in their lives.
Gunju chuckled again, casting one hopeful glance at his surroundings when he noticed an approaching shape in the distance… mmm, were the Gods listening to the idle wishes of a simple leopard like himself? A wicked grin formed and vanished quickly, leaving a soft and inviting expression in its place.

He was doing what Dearbhail had suggested. He was taking his time away from his brother Samm, and learning to navigate things on his own. Dearbhail had said it was incredibly important for him to learn to survive without his brother, but Dene was still leery of such a statement. He never planned on losing his brother, so he wasn't too sure what it was he was supposed to learn from this experience. However Jasira had thought it important that he learn something from this. So much to his dismay, he listened to the hare. He got a lot of looks from others, befriending a hare as closely as he had. She was his best friend, and sometimes if he was alone, he would call her his baby. He had no romantic feelings that would be absurd, but it was a term of endearment for the young hare. She accepted it gladly, and hell.. He was almost sure she kind of loved him.
He sneered at his sore paws, kicking at the grass. Without his brother Dene had no idea what to do, where to go, or how to occupy himself. He was bored, and had been for a few hours. This whole staying away thing needed to hurry up and end, but he still needed to get through the moon hours.
"I hope you were right about this, Jaz.." He said, looking down at the hare who just looked up at him with a nod. She was no seer, she had no idea if she was doing the right thing by having him out on his own like this. But if there was one way to find out, it was to just get on with it.

Oh, the Gods were kind to him. That was the first thing Gunju thought about in the dark corners of his mind when he saw the strange pair coming closer. A young lion and a tasty-looking hare. Oh, could it be any more perfect?
He crouched on his perch and slowly moved back until he was touching the trunk of the tree. How would he play this? Would he be the friendly face today? The creepy stalker? The fierce opponent? Well, he wasn’t much of a fighter but that youngster didn’t know that.
Well, friendly face it would be. The young dark lion looked like he might be lost so he would probably fall for that one easily and when he least expected it… bam! Gunju would snatch that nice hare from right under his nose and go back to his where he could eat it in peace (well, relative peace… he assumed there would be some screaming involved but such things bothered him little)
So it was with slow and deliberate steps that the green leopard slid down the trunk of the tree and landed gracefully on the ground. He waited for the young lion to get closer before calling out to him, his most benevolent expression already firmly set in place.
“Hello there. Are you lost, kid?” Even his voice carried a warmth he could never feel.

The male was eerily protective of his hare. She was his best friend, and the odds of him dying to save her were high.. He was not the type to run off and leave her, and thus, Jasira trusted him. She stuck to his side, almost underfoot, but careful not to actually BE under his paws. The voice nearly had her little heart stop in her chest, and she scrambled up Dene's leg as if she was a squirrel. Taking residence on his back and peeking out from his mane. Dene merely stopped walking, turning his head towards the sound. It was hard to startle him, but he hadn't been expecting to run into anyone. "Kid? Lost? No." He lied. He was no kid, so he had a hard time acknowledging such. But he was lost.. He just wasn't the type to like admitting it.

Gunju almost laughed in the young lion’s face. Not a kid? Really. Had he not practiced this all his life, it would have been impossible to hide his amusement.
“Mmm… I see.” The leopard pointedly ignored the hare that he was saving for later but he was careful when it came to the other answer. The last thing he wanted was to have a pride of lions after his trail. “Ah, I’m glad you’re not lost. Things are hard sometimes when you’re alone. Is your family close? You really shouldn’t stray too far from them.” Will they hear you if you cry out, Gunju thought slyly to himself.

The leopard made him feel uncomfortable, though it wasn't something he was doing. Just a feeling that Dene was getting in the pit of his stomach. But he was the type to over think things.. So he assumed he was just.. wrong. Jasira clung to his neck, pulling and poking. She knew the type the leopard was, but she wasn't like Dene. She was overly cautious of -everyone.- And this leopard was no exception. She was begging Dene to turn and walk away. But she knew he was too hard headed just to obey her whims. "Well, I'm not alone." He said, but then he felt the need to maybe not advertise the fact that he had a prey animal on his shoulder. Though odds were, the leopard knew already. "I haven't been with my family in a long time." He said, and sighed. "I need to get back to my brother, before he comes looking for me."

“Well, I meant larger company… you know, someone who can keep you safe. There are many beasts in these lands and some are rather violent.” He spoke naturally while taking a very slow step forward. He could tell the lion was still wary of him but this was not one of those occasions when he spent long hour to gain a pretty girl’s trust. He just needed to get close enough to the lion’s tasty looking friend.
“You should get back to your family. You and your brother…” whatever he had been about say hang in the air because Gunju was finally making his move. He was not the strongest of leopards but he still had the typical agility of his kind and in an instant, the green leopard had lunged at hare with a palpable killing intent. He was trying to grab it as quickly as possible and running up the tree – which was what he’d do, hare or no hare.

Okay, now he really felt uncomfortable. There wasn't a good look in this leopards eyes, and his question while advancing made Dene think this situation likely wasnt the best situation. Dene unconsciously took a step back, though he didn't step as far back as he should have. The leopard lunged at him, though he realized quickly it wasn't him he was lunging after. Jasira screamed, clinging to Dene's neck in an attempt to conceal herself completely. She prepared herself for death, but Dene reared back, using claws and teeth at the leopard. He wasn't the fastest, but he was a tough kid, and his feelings were usually right. He briefly thought that had he not been getting the wary feeling, Jasira might have been in the leopards jaws. "I will kill you." He snarled, fangs bared and ready to do battle. He could feel Jasira pressed to the back of his neck, her body shivering in terror.

Ah, he’d failed. Dodging the lion’s teeth, Gunju stepped back quickly and ran up the tree at full speed, cackling viciously. He sat on a branch with ease, after stretching his body with provocative slowness.
“Mmmm… how dangerous.” He said with low rumbling chuckle as he eyed the young lion’s display, finally letting go of all pretense. His mouth was opened in a nasty grin that finally showed his true colors. “Well, you can’t really blame a hungry fellow for trying.” He chuckled again, his eyes searching for the hidden hare. He bet that thing had a name. The lion probably even knew it, the fool. Only idiots couldn’t tell the difference between someone worth talking to and food.
“In a way, it’s kind of your fault for carrying around something so tasty, don’t you think?” Another provocation. Even though Gunju was confident he could match the young lion, he had no interest in tempting fate. But in a tree, his home ground, he was king. If the kid managed to climb after him, Gunju would make sure he broke his neck in a nasty fall. His eyes almost glowed with pleasure as he considered that outcome.

Dene was beginning to hate leopards. They were fast, sneaky, and when it came to this jungle.. Dene was beginning to hate everything about it. Jasira clung to his neck, trying to hide in the bulk of his mane. She didn't want to be seen, and with as dark as she was, she blended rather well into him. Her ears folded back and she trembled with fear. Dene had saved her, but what if the leopard tried again? "I can blame you just fine." Dene said, his eyes narrowed at the cat who was staring at him from the tree. Dene was no climber, so while the leopard was up there he was safe. He snorted, and rolled his eyes. "I'm sure some would think the same of you. I've met monsters who would hunt you down just like rabbit. Would you blame them for eating you?" He asked. Though he sounded as if he was trying to be friendly, Dene was angry. The look on his face was obvious.

Gunju paused for a bit, his bright eyes staring right through the young lion, head tilted as in slight confusion. He sat down on the branch, head lowered between his shoulder blades as he gave Dene the most obnoxious pitying look imaginable.
“Oh, you poor boy.” He shook his head a little, to further emphasize his words. “You are so cute. Are you really trying to reason with me?” He spoke of it as if that was the most outrageous thing he’d ever heard. Most didn’t bother… they could tell a lost cause when they saw it – or Gunju simply creeped the daylights out of them.
“Careful, now. I might really start to take a liking to you.” His words held just as much honey as they did danger. In his mind, the green leopard was seriously considering making the young lion and his tasty-looking snack of a companion his primary targets for a while and Gunju could be rather obsessive once he settled his attention on a target. The green cat grinned again, his tongue peeking out eerily between his teeth.

He didn't know what he was thinking, trying to convince the leopard of his faults. This leopard was far from -normal- and if anything.. Dene was getting the feeling he should just leave. Staying around this creature was going to cause a fight, or rage, and neither were something he was particularly feeling up to right now. He was silent for a moment, staring daggers at the leopard who had retreated to a tree. Dene didn't climb, he didn't enjoy it and he was too large to get up trees. Gunju was safe where he was, but Dene wasn't too sure if -he- was. "I have a feeling that you liking me, wouldn't be the highlight of my life." He said, and he felt Jasira cling to his neck tighter, as if she was trying to dissappear from the situation.

Gunju grinned again, his shoulders dancing back and forth in turn beneath the layers of muscle and skin. If there was any doubt that the green leopard was terribly amused, his impish expression could easily set the record straight.
“It might not be the highlight, boy…” he said, eyes glowing coldly as they caught a ray of sunshine when the leopard’s head moved to the side and left the shade of the tree. “But it might be its end.”
He chuckled, retreating back into the shade, twisting his head dramatically as if he was doing a great effort to see something behind the lion’s head.
“Where’s that friend of yours? I can’t see it. Though I suppose that little thing isn’t always with you. I’m sure that sometimes it strays just but a little from you… just a little… just enough.”
