Neither of them have any knowledge of the identity of their parents, nor do they know if they still live. Alchemy wants to know the identity of her parents, and foolishly thinks that they were misplaced at birth. Base, on the other hand, does not share those beliefs. Their parents had never come to claim them, and that's all the proof he needed.
He dropped out of school and took a job as a medical assistant in order to provide for the both of them, while Alchemy remained in school, learning all there was to know about medicines, poisons, and first aid. And when that's over, her brother arranged a place for them to practice for the hunger games, always in a constant fear that one of their names will be called.
