It was a whole new day, and she'd bought a whole new box of chocolates. It had been a testament to how much she wanted Lark to like her, that she did not open the box and eat some chocolates herself. But she had finally found out where Lark's dorm was, and she was standing in front of the door, bright eyed and bushy tailed, holding out the box of chocolates and knocking on her door.

She didn't care what Mookey said. This was a GREAT gift to give a new friend.

Knock, knockknockknock, went the door, and on Freya's face was the brightest smile she could muster, hiding the nervousness behind it.

Silence.

Thump. Thump-thump. Thump. Thump-thump.

A scratching at the door.

The door slowly opened to reveal a rather cocky-looking kangaroo. He blinked a few times at the ghoul at the door before giving a strangled laugh while holding up one clawed finger. Shaking his head, he closed the door with a soft click.

Words were exchanged. They were barely audible and extremely muffled, but if one wanted to hear what was being said, merely leaning forward slightly would accomplish that.

"Yer gonna berko, Lark, but that ghoul that Kettil likes is at th'door."

A long silence.

"Yer right shittin' me? Y'serious?" The sound of booted feet hitting the floor was audible. "Ain't this just out of th'box." A frustrated sound before footsteps grew closer. A few muttered curses. The door opened up again to reveal a very disgruntled-looking Lark. Her shirt was rumpled, hat pushed back and she had the snarkiest expression on her face.

"Yeah?"

Freya's expression had gone from nervous excitement, to nervous anxiety, and when she stared at the laughing kangaroo, it had fallen to just plain nervousness. Her smile, however, had stayed on her face through each change, and by the end it just looked pathetic. When Lark opened the door and glared at her snarkily, the smile finally fell, and her brows furrowed in the most pathetic puppy dog look ever.

"H-hi, Lark," Freya stumbled out, holding out the chocolates as if she couldn't get rid of them fast enough. "I'm, ah," She knows who you are, Freya, she told herself while biting her lip. "Well I'm Freya, but I guess yeh knows this, hah.. yeahhh.."

Freya felt like she was going to throw up. The chocolate rattled in her hands when they lifted even higher. "IBROUGHTSYEHAPRESENTWELCOMETEHAMITYVILLE"

This was going well so far!

Those piercing green eyes narrowed, lending Lark an almost serpentine look. She was trying hard not to let a snarl twist her lips. Freya was just as blond and just as beautiful as her Groanspring picture.

Lark wanted to slap that pretty face.

Glancing down at the box, Lark braced a shoulder against her door frame, crossed her legs at the ankles, crossed her arms over her chest and just ... stared at the gift. Silence reigned for a long, long moment. Frankly, Lark didn't care if she was making the ghoul nervous.

Finally she lifted her eyes to meet Freya's once more. With a wrench of her mouth she kicked the door open, causing it to slam against the opposite wall, before she shoved off of the door frame. Lark spun on her heel and stalked into her dorm room. If Freya followed, fine. If she didn't, well, that would be most ideal.

Lark hated her.

Every bone in Freya's body was telling her to run. Give up on Lark, give up on trying to be her friend, just.. give up. But Freya did not give up. And Lark was going to learn that firsthand, unfortunately for her.

Freya followed the ghoul in like a baby chicken, still holding out the chocolates.

"I've been so excited to meets yeh, Lark! Kettil talks about yeh all the times, yeh sounds like just wonderfuls. Are yeh havings fun so far? Gots settled in and everythings? Yeh needs any help or yeh gots any questions or maybe some advice or-" The chocolates were risen again "-Bought em specials for yeh! They're SO GOOD."

Lark hated her.

Her scrawny shoulders lifted in an exaggerated sigh when she heard Freya follow her in to the room. At least Ben was there -- he could take some of the heat. She knew how much her familiar liked to chat. Problem was, Ben was keeping quiet. Very quiet. Suspiciously quiet. She glanced at him out of the corner of her eyes. He was rocked back on his tail, paws folded over his belly as he watched Freya with a look that plainly said 'this oughtta be good'.

Lark was not pleased.

"I ain't fond'a chocolate," the ghoul hissed under her breath before retreating to her kitchen area. It was so hard not to tell the other reaper to beat feet out of her dorm room. It was so hard for her not to rough up the valk that Kettil seemed so captivated by.

It was so hard not to cry with frustration.

Ben, sensing Lark's distress, slowly thudded forward and accepted the box with a gracious look. He set it on the table before gesturing that Freya should take a seat. "Y'thirsty, treat?"

As soon as the words fell, they felt like a guillotine chopping her arms off. The chocolates dropped to her side, as Freya watched her disappear into the kitchen. What was she supposed to do? She didn't know if she was meant to follow, or.. or maybe Lark just hoped that when she came back.. Freya would be gone.

She wouldn't be.

"Hello, friend!" Freya's bright smile returned when the kangaroo took the chocolates. "Aren't yeh beautifuls? I'm Freya, what's yehr name? And ah.." She considered whether she was thirsty or not.. and then considered whether it really mattered.

"Hah, nah, not so thirsty, thank yehs!"

Ben's lips formed an awkward smile. Beautiful? Why yes, he was!

"Awr, well, Freya, ain't you a bobby dazzler." Ben beamed at the valkyrie. "Can see why Ket seems so smitten, yer a right pretty little thing." It was evident that the familiar was trying to mock Lark out of her funk. "If yer sure that ya ain't thirsty I'll just --"

And then he was gone.

A furious Lark was leaning against the counter in the kitchen that opened up into the rest of the dorm room. No walls separated the bedroom from the kitchen and dining area -- the only door in the room was one that led into the bathroom. Her slender arms were crossed over her chest.

Awkward silence reigned.

Ben's easygoing attitude and fond words instantly comforted Freya. Her muscles untensed and she gave him the most grateful of smiles-

She was smiling at a wall.

It felt like someone had reached into Freya's chest, grabbed her heart, and squeezed it like a lemon. She stiffened and turned, wincing when she saw that look Lark was beaming at her like a laser.

And the nervousness returned.

"S-s-so, Lark!" Her voice squeaked when she said the other ghoul's name. "I.. ah.." She had NOTHING. She was running on empty, completely clueless. "I.. wants.. I wants to knows all abouts yeh. Maybe we can, ah.." Can what? Become friends? Fall in love? Have angry sex? "We can helps each other out here in school! I would be happy to helps yeh.. with anything.. yeh.. uhhhm.."

She was getting dizzy, possibly considering fainting. Would she wake up naked outside the dorms? Would she wake up at all? Who knew.

One single eyebrow arched upward. Lark knew she was being a monster. She knew she'd never hear the end of it from Kettil. She didn't care. Lark couldn't bring herself to care.

"Right. Figger we better set some things straight, then, Freya." Lark's voice was low, smooth as silk. She took a few steps forward.

"Kettil? He's m'best mate. Been that way since we was kids." Her eyes narrowed even more. "He's a right good bloke. Been there fer me through thick n' thin." Lark lifted a slender hand, pointing an index finger at Freya's chest while her eyes flashed emerald fire.

"I give y'this promise, Freya. Y'do anythin' t'hurt Ket? Anythin'? Ya gonna be up s**t creek without a paddle. I'll ruin ya, Freya. Kettil don't deserve t'be led on. He deserves t'be happy. And you, Freya? With yer boilfriend?"

Lark shook her head.

"Ain't no way yer gonna make him happy."

Freya's breath caught in her throat when Lark stepped forward, and she stiffened straight as a board. She almost felt the thrill of danger run up her spine, making her hairs stand on end.

"I know-" She barely tried to interrupt as soon as Lark laid down the facts, but she bit her lip and shut up as soon as that finger pointed at her chest.

So she let her finish.

When all was said and done, and the words had finally sunk in, Freya looked absolutely crushed. Her eyes were wet with threatening tears that she refused to let fall.

"I'm-I'm not leadings him on, Lark! I tolds him I has a boilfriend, I tolds him it wasn't goings to happen! I just wants to be his friend! I just wants to be YEHR friend! I never want to hurts him, NEVER! I loves him!"

She sniffed, and wiped her nose quickly with the back of her hand. "Why would yeh thinks for one seconds that I would ever hurt Kettil?"
PostPosted: Thu Nov 24, 2011 11:30 pm

Lark snorted and shook her head.

"Yer thick as a brick, ain't ya?" Lark leaned in. She was not moved by the tears that brimmed on Freya's lashes, the shaky voice, the lamentations of love, the promises to never hurt him.

"S'why y'keep talkin' to 'm? Y'think yer th'first ghoul I've had this conversation with?" Lark shook her head again. "Wrong. Y'think that by keepin' him around n' talkin' wit'him on groanspring n' HIM is gonna make him happy? So y'got a boilfriend, hmm? He know you love Kettil?"

Lark looked like she just wanted to reach forward and sock Freya in her nose.

"Y'don't thin' 'bout these things, I reckon. Bet yer too worried 'bout what dress yer gonna wear or how yer gonna do yer hair. Too busy t'think 'bout how Kettil feels when 'e goes t'sleep at night, yeah?" Lark's lip curled in a snarl.

"So y'want t'be m'mate?" Her accent was growing thicker and thicker, her words almost slurring together completely.

"Tell me, Freya, how ya'reckon I'ma be mates wit'ya when yer gonna end up breakin' my best mate's heart?"

"I just-" She tried to interrupt, but it was pointless. "Yeh don't-" Lark was on a roll, and there was no stopping her. "I'm not-" It was futile to even try. When she finally stopped, after asking Freya a question, the valkyrie was all hyped up with frustration, and she huffed out her first puff of anger for Lark since she'd walked in.

"Now HOLDS ON A SECOND, yehr not being fairs at ALL here! I'm not the only ones here, yeh knows. It takes two to tango, and I promised Kettil we'd always be honest with one anothers! If he's got a problems, he would tell me!"

She didn't want to admit that the phrase Y'think yer th'first had cut her straight to the core, and buried that dark seed of doubt deep within her heart, germinating quickly.

"Kettil means a lots to me. Yehr askings me to just stops talkings to someone I cares about very much, and I just don't thinks it's right. It'd be like askings yeh to stops talking to him. It's just.. it's not fair!"

She felt the thrumming of bravery pulsing through her veins, as she got up to speed with her argument. "Kettil's workings out his feelings. Yeh don't gives him enough credit. Do yeh really thinks he's just sittings there pining away about me anymore? He's probably already over it by now, but that don't means we're not goings to be friends. We're ALWAYS goings to be friends, Lark- and if yehr really his best friend? Yeh'd accept that, and yeh'd accept ME! 'CAUSE I AM NOT GOINGS ANYWHERE!"

Her voice boomed out at the last word, even as she stamped her foot. But despite the loud, brave ending to her speech, she had to add on one little, half-assed answer.

"And not that it's any of yehr business, but yeh, Herryk knows about Kettil." A vague answer, but she felt it was enough.

It'd be like askings yeh to stops talking to him.
It'd be like askings yeh to stops talking to him.
It'd be like askings yeh to stops talking to him.

Was this broad serious?!

Lark gave a loud, harsh bark of laughter. She had wanted to give Freya some credit, had even admired the way that the other ghoul had been so blunt and forward. It did take two to tango, and as far as Lark was concerned, Ket was being just as stupid. That's just the way Ket was. Stupid for love... with everyone but her. An immature way to feel, but as Lark stared at Freya's pretty face that jealous emotion burned in her gut.

"If I cared about Kettil? If I cared about Kettil?" Lark's hands clenched into fists. Urge to pop Freya in her perfectly pert little nose growing. Lark felt like she wanted to laugh, cry, and scream all at once. If there was anything Lark was good at, though, it was hiding her emotions. She'd done it for so very long that it was almost second nature. Everything was carefully tucked away -- except anger. Lark allowed that to burn like wildfire for a few long, beautiful moments before forcing herself to tamp it down. With a calmness that belied the expression on her face, Lark removed her hat and set it on the small kitchen table before turning back to face Freya.

When she spoke, her voice held a deadly calm.

"Since I already know yer gonna tear off n' cry to Kettil 'bout this an' he's gonna get right pissy with me -- it's happened b'fore, so don't try to deny it -- I'll jus' say this. Th' next time y'try and question m'friendship n'loyalty to Ket, ghoul." She held up a tightly wound fist. "Th'next time y'try n'say 'if y'were Kettil's best friend' -- I'll sock ya." Lark shook her head. "That boil n'me, we been through heaps. Heaps." Her mouth twisted. "Askin' you t'stop talkin' to him? Ain't nothin' like askin' me t'stop talkin' t'him."

Lark dropped her fist to her side where she then relaxed her fingers. "It's real important to Ket that I like ya. I'unno why." Her bony shoulders lifted in a shrug. "But 'cuz he's m' best mate -- before y'even showed up here -- I 'ad already decided that I was gonna try." She wasn't trying very hard so far, but at least she hadn't punched Freya in her nose yet. "Real hard."

And just as Freya had felt the urge to add in that last little bit, Lark felt the urge to add on something as well.

"Herryk, yeah? So that's yer boil's name?" She narrowed her eyes. "I"ll just have'ta remember that."

Freya had been confident about everything she'd said. It was visible in her stance, her expression, everything about her exhuded her confidence. But as Lark loomed over her with each word, Freya shrank. She didn't want Lark to think she was challenging her for friendship dominance. In fact, that was the last thing she'd wanted. She had already accepted that Lark had the upper hand when it came to being Kettil's best friend. She was no competition, and she knew it. Even if, deep down, what she wanted more than anything from Kettil was to be his best friend, it was a fight she'd lost before she'd even begun to play. And she was okay with that. She really was.

But as far as this fight was concerned, it really didn't sound like it. And Lark's response made Freya realize just how badly she was doing at it.

"I'm sorry." She muttered through clenched teeth, trying to look submissive and probably just coming off looking like a child. "I didn't means teh compare us. I just wanted yeh teh knows how important he is to me.." Nope, you're going down that same path again, Freya, she warned herself.

But when she'd admitted that she was going to try, for Kettil, Freya's eyes lifted hopefully. "But that's why I'm here, is the same reasons! I knows it's hard, but I wants teh try teh be friends with yeh, for Kettil! I'll do anythings teh make yeh feel better, anythings, just-"

Her voice died out when Lark mentioned Herryk, and her heart went cold with fury. Kettil was important to her. Real, real important. But Herryk topped them all. And nobody was getting in the way of her and Herryk.

"Yeh stays away from my Herryk." Freya's cold blue eyes flattened and narrowed, her wings puffing out behind her. She was an entirely different beast when her relationship with Herryk was being threatened - and the beast had awoken.
