Marcus had once again, been looking for a sparring partner. He'd found one in the guy name Jordan. They didn't now each other well but hell, practice was practice after all. It was better than nothing at all. Plus it kept them from shitty missions. The sun glimmered through the clouds and mist, but it was still cool and wet from the night before. Waving him over Marcus smiled. "Hey man. Glad you game out. You ready?"

Jordan hid a yawn behind his hand as he made his way across the field. Too early for his taste, but he had at least got his coffee before coming outside. He didn't know why Marcus had snagged him in particular for a spar, but he didn't mind; practice was practice, and it was nice to have a match without either grudges or worries being aired.
"Ready as I'll be," he answered Marcus's question, and held his hand out to summon Ferros. "What about you?"
Why are we not still sleeping, Ferros complained drowsily. He was fractionally slower than usual materializing, his way of protesting the early-morning meeting.

As he summoned Marcus, he had a pang of regret. He didn't get bacon that morning and it sounded really good right then. "Same as always. Born ready." He chuckled. "But that is a lie. Ready enough I'd say." A dash and slash, but only hitting air.

"Close enough." Jordan stepped back, pivoting on the ball of his foot; the blade passed within a few inches of him. "Hey, now." Warn a guy was on the tip of his tongue, but he kept it quiet; the freaks would hardly give fair warning.
Our turn! Ferros sang, waking up quickly at the promise of a good fight.
Jordan brought the hammer forward again, letting his weapon's weight give extra momentum to the swing. A glancing hit, but a hit nonetheless.

"Too early - wait, was that - dude, really?" Jordan wasn't sure whether to laugh or groan. He settled for an eyeroll. "Your wit's sharper than your blade. Or is it the other way around?"
Barely a hit, again; still, Ferros practically purred with it.

"Ow. Really. Ow. That was terrible." The slice might have stung, but the pun was worse. He might actually like this guy, Jordan decided; if nothing else, Marcus had a sense of humor.
" ... You'll get nailed if you don't watch out." He wasn't doing too well, but the exchange of stupid jokes was entertaining, at least.
Oh, come on, Ferros grumbled.

Okay, less funny. The blade scraped along Jordan's elbow, and he winced with the half-felt pain, the shock of impact, relatively light as it might be. "What else is there to do around here?" he shot back automatically, playing devil's advocate though he wasn't sure he believed what he was saying. "Figuratively? Literally? Semantics, man. Semantics."
Getting more serious now? Maybe. Either way, he pivoted and swung, felt the hammer connect much more solidly.

"I prefer it when they're tormenting each other. Less innocent bystanders in the mess." The slash sent Jordan skidding backwards on the wet grass; he kept his balance mostly by willpower. "I can see why it's not in the brochure. Then again, who knows? Maybe some people think that's just plain awesome."
He was back too far; Ferros barely nicked Marcus's elbow. I want to flame, the dragon hissed impatiently. Let me, let me, I'm ready.

"That's for sure. Haven't been on the receiving end of that myself. Hoping it stays that way." Jordan circled carefully sideways, looking for an opportunity to attack. "I like the Sun course," he said cheerfully. "Straightforward and satisfying."
A quick lunge and spin earned him a decent hit, but Ferros grumbled in his head, restlessly, constantly. Oh, all right, Jordan conceded. Next time we have a chance.

Done we all Jordan? Nobody sane wanted to be at the receiving end of Caelius's scythe. And definitely not after the last mission. "Sun wasn't that bad. Moon I pretty much...kicked a**. Over twenty waves." He was pretty proud of that. "Death and Life- No thanks man." A stab to the side.
