Even if it isn't me.
Today was the day of the fabled meeting, and Mac couldn't bring himself to get out of bed, nevermind leave his room to discuss something that sounded important. But that was who he was, deep down; a coward who insisted on taking the easy way out all the time. Eventually of course he did get up, he did shower and get dressed and perform various other morning routines, but they were done with a great deal of difficulty. He couldn't put it off any more, it wasn't fair to her or to himself...and he knew she would stop by to see him today; he really had no other choice.
After all was said and done, he took a seat at his desk, staring at the last message to her on his phone.Quote: Meet you there tomorrow? <3 Don'twannagoalone. "Sorry, Lizzy." He murmured to his phone as if hoping it would make what he was going to do any easier.

At first she was just really confused, waiting and waiting till they sealed the entrance; she barely stopped herself from asking them to wait a little while more. A little while more and he would come through that broken door, and she would be able to hug him and get him to hold her hand as the horsemen heirs go on to go through and discuss some very important things. When Mac never did join her, she found herself looking constantly at her eyephone; he would never make her wait without at least sending her a text... Which was when she started to worry.
Immediately after they were dismissed, she went straight to the reaper dorms, walking faster than usual, anxious to see her boilfriend well and in good health. Reaching his room, she flung the door open and then flung herself at Mac, wrapping her arms around him and nuzzling against his chest before frowning, looking up.
"Are you okay?" Her frown deepened as she caressed his cheek with one hand, the other hand reaching for his hand, "I didn't see you at the meeting just now, and you didn't say anything about not attending..."

As he expected, the door to his room opened and within seconds that pink haired ghoul he loved so much practically tackled him in his chair. One arm went around her on instinct, the other tossing his phone out of the way to save it, or to maybe keep that lovely text from making him change his mind.
"I'm...fine." Was all he said, taking his hand out of her reach and gently drawing hers away from his face. The Reaper stared down at her, swallowing hard before continuing. "But...we need to talk." No dry mouth was going to stop him!

"You sure? You don't look well..." There was something about the way he was acting that worried her for some odd reason... And a talk? She tried to grab his hand, but found her free hand grasping at air instead - which only served to worry her even more.
She needed him to hold her again! So why was he moving away from her?
"Um, okay?" She hesitantly climbed off him to sit on the edge of his desk instead, looking at him expectantly, waiting for him to explain why he was acting so weird as she played with the hem of her skirt. She couldn't explain it, but the longer she waited, the more nervous she got, causing her to fidget with her skirt even more.

"I'm fine, just..." He started, releasing his hold on her so she could move as she wished. It was helpful that she was moving away from him, it made what he needed to say all the easier. Or it should have in theory; even just looking up at her, completely oblivious to what he had planned, was making him have second thoughts. His gaze moved down her form which brought focus to the obviously nervous fidget; after a moment of staring at her hands, he realized that it was a perfect example of why he needed to do what he thought was right.
"There's really no easy way to say this, but..." Black eyes darted up to meet hers, and then focused down on his lap again, completely unable to look her in the face. Again he swallowed hard, trying to force away that dry feeling in his mouth."I think...we should break up." He could barely hear himself over the pounding of his own heart.

Fidget, fidget.
She wasn't sure why Mac was acting the way he was acting, but she was determined to find out; she could still feel the warmth of his cheek on the palm of the hand that had momentarily caressed him just now, and she was desperate for more. It took everything in her to stay where she was, seeing how he was just in reach; whatever he wanted to talk about sounded like something serious though, and she had a feeling that sitting on his lap would just cause her attention to wander.
However, once he was back to normal and the talk was done, she would leap back on his lap and demand cuddles as punishment for making her worry about-
"What?" Was her immediate response as she stared at Mac, wondering if she had heard right, "You think we should..." She couldn't even bear to complete her sentence as she swallowed the lump that had formed in her throat, sliding off the desk to move closer to him, like that would help change his mind.
"W-why?" Her voice was strained, "I-I... I thought... W-we were doing well...?"

Mac stood sat his ground, his fingers tenting between his knees. That stare of hers was heart breaking, but no matter how much he wanted to go 'SURPRISE I WAS JOKING', he couldn't. He wanted to hug her close, to pet her hair and kiss her worries away, but...no. Not anymore. This was for the best, at least in his mind. Lizzy deserved the world, and he couldn't give it to her. So he buried his conflicting emotions, stomped out the ache in his heart, steeled his expression and slowly lifted his gaze to meet hers.
"Why do you think?" He said slowly.

"I-I don't know..." She was still in a state of shock, her eyes wide with mild panic as she tried to calm herself down; maybe he was just joking. A sick, cruel joke, but at least a joke would mean that it wasn't true... Or maybe he was testing her? A horrible, sadistic test?
"I was h-hoping you could tell me..." She reached for his hand with a hopeful expression, praying that he would hold it, hold her, and tell her that it was going to be alright.

It's okay Mac, you can do this. He told himself mentally. He didn't want to, but...he felt he had to. It's what's best for her, that's what you want, right? He continued to argue with himself; he wanted her, he still wanted her. That outstretched hand, that hopeful expression...augh he wanted to tell her to forget it.
"Are you really that stupid, Lizzy?" He moved his hand out of her reach, folding them both across his stomach. In an arrogant move he leaned back in his chair, stretching his legs out to cross his ankles. "You n' Me...we're just not working out." If she argued with him one more time, he promised himself, he'd make sure she wouldn't ask again. He'd make sure she'd never want to even hear his name again.
No matter how much it hurt.

Wow. Wow.
Mac hadn't called her stupid since... Since he became her boilfriend. Not this way, anyway, and it was enough to make her take a step back. His posture, everything... Maybe a doppelganger took Mac away and replaced him. That must be it, right?
"How so?" Her voice had started to shake, although her gaze was still on him; now that the initial shock was fading, it was quickly being replaced by a growing ache in her chest, "I... I told you that..." Her voice dropped to a whisper, as tears formed in her eyes, "That I love you."
If things really weren't working out, there was no way she would have said that to him. She didn't want to make it seem like she was taking that phrase lightly, after all! She meant it! She meant every word!

Oh, she just wouldn't let it go. He hoped that she would, but he should have known better.
"You did." Mac stared up at her as calmly as he could, fighting to keep his breathing even and to keep himself in his chair, arms folded in an attempt to be unapproachable. "Did I say it back to you?" Black eyes narrowed for a moment, reminding himself over and over that he didn't mean this, but it needed to be said. For her. "Remember when I said I was okay with waiting? I'm not. There are plenty of boils out there who would be, and I'm not one of them. I never have been, but since lying didn't work..." Mac trailed off with a careless shrug, momentarily closing his eyes.
"You're too good a ghoul, Lizzy. It was fun for a little while, playing house...but it turns out, playing with you - and dating you - is more like babysitting." I'm sorry. "So I'm done playing." I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry.
"I'm done with you."
I'm so sorry.

"No, but-" But she thought maybe he just wasn't ready to say it, since it took her months to say it and Junko did tell her that even Seiji needed some prompting... She had assumed that it was a boil thing, "You're not okay with waiting?" For a moment, she looked like she didn't mind solving that problem right there and then, going silent and looking down at her feet as she tried to wipe away her tears using the back of her hand.
"So you had been taking this as a game?" If she had been trying not to cry before, she certainly wasn't trying now. She raised her head, feeling weak and sick all of a sudden, "So I didn't mean anything to you? It was just a game?"

Her voice raised, and Mac tried his hardest to stay unphased, or to at least look like he was. He wasn't sure how he actually looked, but on the inside he knew he was screaming. This was wrong, so wrong. He hated this, he didn't want to lose her...he really didn't. He had no choice; he liked her too much, and he couldn't give her what she wanted out of life.
He looked at her with what he hoped was a bored looking calm.
"Yes."
And felt a little bit of him die, all with that single lie.

When he answered her, her heart stopped and she closed her eyes, trying her best to calm down; this wasn't Mac. She refused to believe that he would say such things and in such a pose, like he didn't care that she was crying or that he was breaking her heart... And it hurt so bad. She had felt this sort of pain before but hearing those words from Mac made the pain a million times worse.
"I..." She cleared her throat and tried to stop her voice from shaking as she walked over to Mac, standing beside the chair before leaning over to plant a brief kiss on his cheek. She wasn't sure if he could even hear her over her sniffing and how strained her voice was, but she wanted to say it anyway, "Still love you."
Without waiting for him to say anything - her heart wouldn't be able to take anymore anyway - she quickly walked away, out of the door and into the hallway. She bowed her head and just walked for a bit, until she was sure he was out of earshot, before squatting down on the floor, hugging her knees and crying.
In the hallway.

Why was Lizzy coming closer. Why was Lizzy coming closer?!
He expected a slap, and at the very least expected her to yell at him. When neither came, he was honestly surprised; more surprising was the kiss to the cheek. But the thing that got him, that pierced him right through his entire being, were her words.
I still love you
He stared, his black eyes wide in dismay. No, No! What did he have to say to her to take it all back? Why, after everything he said, did she still say that back to him?! How could she? That...That hurt more than anything he forced himself to say to her. Knowing that she could still feel that way after everything he'd put her though...
He was lucky she had turned away when she did, or else she would have seen the regret in his expression; she would have seen the tears in his eyes.
The door clicked closed behind her, and Mac stared at it for a moment, dumbfounded and teary-eyed, until he shook his head, wiping an eye with the heel of his hand. His phone was scooped up from the ground, and through his blurry vision he texted the one boil he was sure would make Lizzy feel better.CowboilDude - Mot Hey. Go find Lizzy, I think she needs your help. Mac slumped back into his chair, letting his phone slide from his lifeless hand. Just after it hit the ground, it gave a low chime to announce the message had been sent; then, and only then, did he draw in a shakey breath, and allowed himself to cry.
