There are three words I like to repeat to myself: glass half full.
Just to remind myself to be grateful for everything I have.

↓ ↓ ↓ ↓ ↓ ↓ ↓ ↓ ↓ ↓ ↓ ↓ ↓ ↓ ↓

The fear subdues all traits of my personality. My usual bubbly positive outlook is replaced by dread and fear on this day of the year when from our adolescent population one boy and one girl are chosen to fight to the death. I know very well it could be me, but it could also be anybody else. I always feel a pang of dread for whoever is chosen even if they are a stranger.

I put on the only cute and clean dress I have really. I don't particularly like dresses preferring my jeans and rider boots, but the cream dress with black polka dots isn't all that bad. Wearing it does turn some eyes of the guys around me, but I honestly don't pay attention. I have always been rather oblivious towards that. Always the last to know what somebody might think.

I had congregated with what is left of my family this morning and we had not exchanged much chatter. My brother and i had separated not long ago having stayed together until I had to go to my roped off area. My Uncle and cousin had accompanies us of course, but they were no where to be seen anymore. I look up the the stage at the familiar faces up there that I am not at all happy to see, and there are the balls with all the names in them including slips with my own and I stare at them transfixed in fear at whose name will come out.

Allen

Allen's throat was tight, his mouth was dry and his fists were clenched. He went over countless times in his head how many times his name went into tesserae. He nodded every time he confirmed himself it was a low number of times. He wore his newest crisp white shirt. Actually it was his dad's. He didn't own any stylish clothing. Not when the only thing he did was kill animals and ride horses.

Even though he counted and recounted the number of times his name was sitting in a piece of folded paper in that big glass ball up there, he couldn't help but become more nervous. The people, standing up on stage, their faces were so familiar, yet so new. Like something he'd never seen before. They surely looked out of place, with their bright highlighter colors, in contrast to the neutral warm colors of District 10.

His eyes wandered through everyone in the crowd. Watching as most of the girls, and some boys fought to keep tears from their eyes. Looking past the children he noticed the parents, or guardians and their distraught looks. His eyes particularly fell in his father, who watch him with intense eyes. Eyes that assured him that he wasn't going to get pulled. Eyes that confirmed that he went all these years without being pulled. Eyes, that had and underlying sign of sorriness and regret, just incase he did get pulled.

Allen quickly looked away, trying hard to focus on something else. Anything. His eyes found Nicole. Watching her calmed him a bit. Just a few days ago, that were horse racing in a beautiful field, sharing laughter and soda. There was no way either of them could be pulled. He felt it in his gut that those to had more time ahead of them. More time to get to know each other. More time......

The Reaping Day was here. This would be the seventh year that Weston's name would be in that glass ball. There are even more slips of paper with his name on it this year. This made Weston's stomach turn. He hated thinking that he wasn't safe. Besides his uncle, Weston was the last one to carry on the Rathway name. All he had was his sister, uncle, and cousin. Of course his uncle could always help and he has ever since their parents died but the ranch has been Weston's pride and joy, his sanctuary, a place to go to release all terrible thoughts and dreams from his mind. Oh how he wish he was there now.

As Weston walked up to the table he spotted Nicole already in her age group waiting. I wish she didn't have to go threw this. He thought to himself as he gave his hand to a woman at a table and she pricked his finger. After taking his print he made his way over to his age group. Many he remembered seeing around in school and some from the exchange. One he did remember was Allen, the butcher's son. He was looking toward of group of girls in which Nicole was in. Weston stopped beside him and then cleared his throat. Hello Allen...how are you today? He asked him, starting light conservation, as he looked toward the stage.

LaHarl xDacre xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxdistric 10

It had been the rooster’s call that had woke LaHarl that morning. At the first croak of the animal, the eighteen year old seemingly had continued to sleep past. He hadn’t. The dark haired teenager simply remained in the position he had been sleeping in and listened to the rest of the morning cry. Afterwards it had passed; he had slowly turned onto his back, rested his folded hands on his chest and stared at his ceiling. Reaping Day. Every teenagers dreaded date. LaHarl had spent several minutes just laying there as an attempt to soak up everything feeling he could about his home. It could be him today. If he wasn’t reaped, then he had survived and could live on without joining the games. With a sigh, he heaved himself up and pulled himself to the bathroom. He heard his mother sobbing to his grandmother downstairs and so had made his preparations to make himself presentable quickly. Afterwards he went downstairs and had his breakfast with his forlorn family. LaHarl planned to spend five minutes with them each, but ended up spending slightly longer with his mother. How couldn’t he? She had already lost his father to the games; it would break her to lose him too. Eventually he was able to leave the house with a relatively heavy heart.

Once he reached the town centre, he glanced around, ignorant of the other potential’s worries and fears. By no means was he fearless of being chosen, but he wasn’t worried in case he was. He had trained for the possibility, he had done as much as he could to prepare. It was out of his hands now and if he was chosen, then so be it. LaHarl got in line with the others. When he reached the table, he raised his hand to the woman without being prompted and remained passive when his finger was pricked. Once his blood was scanned -without prompting again- the teenager moved towards his group of peers and waited. He saw a few people talking, but made no move to join them. He never was a social bird.

LaHarl's light azure eyes had been caught up watching the two guys beside him interact, that he had barely saw the motions of the district's escort. It wasn’t until he heard him call out the female tribute’s name that his attention was caught. Like everyone in the centre, they all turned to Beatrix Horet. There was very little noise apart from the relief breathing of the girls that remained unpicked for potentially another year and Beatrix’s footsteps to the raised platform. The escort didn’t waste time with grabbing her hand and showing her proudly to her peers for being this year’s female tribute for District 10. The whole action was sickening and LaHarl felt an unsettling feeling in the back of his mind. It had become silent again throughout the centre as the escort reached into the second drawing ball. They seemed to spend longer this time with rummaging through the slips of paper until they finally plucked one from the bottom depths of the ball. LaHarl briefly wondered if that was because they wanted to cause distress to the males of the district. It certainly unsettled the younger ones. As the escort returned back to their microphone, they unravelled the paper and took a deep breath in.

Even at the first syllable LaHarl knew he had been chosen and took a quick intake of breath. His body slightly swayed side to side a bit and he closed his eyes in submission to his fate. With a sigh, he opened his eyes once more and looked behind him towards the crowd of parents. His mother stood out like a sore thumb. She had pushed herself to the front of the group to see her son; her head flitted back and forth as if to disperse this horrible nightmare. LaHarl wishing to go to her knew he couldn’t, so he settled for smiling towards her. When he was sure she noticed his action, he raised his finger and tapped just above his heart. The action –whatever it meant- seemed to cease his mother’s tears. She stood up taller and nodded towards him.

With a final smile and slight bend of his head in return, he turned towards the platform and walked towards the hated escort. Once he climbed the stairs and was facing the crowd, LaHarl drowned out everybody and the final speech the escort was making. He took these final moments to look past everybody to observe his home and to burn it into his memory. After his task was complete, LaHarl waited for the escort’s prompting to leave.

A sense of relief washes over me as I realize my name was not called after the suspense. My relief only lasts a minute though before I take in who had been chosen. Beatrix. She supports her four younger siblings by herself as her parents passed away recently. I feel a pang and my eyes instantly flash over to where her younger siblings are. Tears spring into my eyes. She can't go to the arena. They need her. Without her they will go to a community home. They'll have lost another member of their family.

I manage to let myself be relieved when Weston's name is not chosen, but I can't take my eyes off of Beatrix and her family. Both tributes are up on the stage now and the escort is asking for volunteers. I take my eyes off of her family, take a look behind me towards Weston and before I even know what I am doing I'm pushing through the crowd. "I volunteer!" I say having made it to the small aisle between the boys and girls. I've probably shocked the entire district right now, but I don't care. Beatrix cannot go to the arena. Her family needs her.

There's a moment to register what just happened before I replace Beatrix on the stage. There has not been a volunteer in our district for a while. Never would I have imagined myself volunteering. I hadn't even completely registered what I was doing, but I knew in my heart that I couldn't let that poor family get torn apart. They already lost their parents. I can relate to that and I can't help but wonder how Weston is taking my actions. I don't chance a look at him. I know there are very little odds on me returning home. I know my weaknesses and they are plentiful. Eyes downcast I don't look at anybody and I try my best to fight back the tears that are starting to spring up as I realize just how stupid my actions might have been, but I was right to do this.

Allen looked at Nicole, eyes wide. "What!?" He cried out as she volunteered. His eyes searched for hers. "Why?!" He yelled out to her. Why would she volunteer? Was she trying to kill herself? Why in earth's name... This couldn't be happening. It was like losing his mother all over again. Still he tried his best to stay calm. He didn't want to embarrass his father. Even though he turned a few heads with his reaction.

Still he kept his eyes on Nicole. He thought about sneaking in to see her when it was time for visits. She needed to know how he felt. He needed to tell her. For a second he thought to volunteer as well, just to protect her, but thought against it. His dad needed him. Still his heart ached at watching Nicole go up on stage where she would eventually be lead to her possible death...

I hear Allen's voice in the crowd. My eyes snap up and look for him, next to my brother. My eyes are full of confusion. I honestly hadn't thought we were that close. They had become good friends now though. He couldn't possibly know why I was doing this. Few people probably would understand even if I explained it. I didn't even know Beatrix that well, but I knew her situation and couldn't stand the thought of what might happen if she didn't return. All those kids.

My eyes dart over to Weston who is practically right next to him, but before I know it I'm being whisked away by my escort to go to the justice building. I don't know what I'm going to say. What could I possibly say. My reasoning is jumbled up in my head now and I've even begun to question my rational of all this.

Out.Of.Cake...Meh crappy post cuz I'm trying to split it up for part in her part in the justice building. Oh Nicole still clueless about Allen.

There was a sign of relief when Weston realized that both himself and his family have not been chosen to be in the games. One less thing to worry about, though he couldn't help but worry for those Tributes. Like he did every year, these horrible games were always a terrible event. Taking away children from their friends and families. Though he was fortunate that it wasn't his friends or family...well that was until he head a familiar voice yell from the crowd, "I volunteer!"

Weston felt himself panic, his eyes were quickly searching for the source of the voice. He didn't spot it until she had reached the front of the crowd and was already being escorted by the Peacekeepers to the front of the stage. NO...NO...NO, why Nicole!? His mind cried as he saw her take the font place on stage next to the boy Tribute. He couldn't let her go, he didn't want her to die. She was the only sibling he had. Tears started streaming down Weston's face as she kept her gaze away from him. He wasn't cautious of his actions but he started pushing through the crowd of boys, he wanted to volunteer with her. Though just as he reached the edge of the roped off section the Escort shouted their thanks to the District and ushered his sister and the other boy off the stage. Weston just stood there and watched her walk away in disbelief, why was this happening? The moment she was out of sight he felt his legs crumble and fell to his knees in numbness and let out a yell of anger and frustration. Nicole! He couldn't help himself, he didn't care what the others were thinking of him. He was being pushed over the edge, his family was almost destroyed.
