What had it been? Days? A week since she had woken? And still, STILL she was not accustomed to the coffee at the cafeteria. This was a disaster. To others, it may seem trivial--but she needed her caffeine--she needed good coffee. This stuff..was a disgrace. A disgrace to all coffee lovers and their taste buds.
Perhaps she could make a request to change the coffee to a different brand? Or see if she could have it brewed differently? But every time she laid eye's on the woman working in the cafeteria--with the never ending smile and lack of speech--Kat found herself backing away instead.
:Good grief! Just suck it up already! Coffee is coffee! Just get your fix and be done with it!:
I'm going to forget you said that, Xedis. To mock her was one thing--but to insult her coffee so..she would not take it lightly.

Gale did not use the Deus cafeteria nearly as much as he probably should have. For the most part, he took his food back to his room, preferring to eat in solitude, rather than be forced to make small talk with those around him. And, on several occasions, he simply forgot to eat entirely, returning to his room late at night and just collapsing onto his bed in exhaustion and weariness.
Today, however, he found himself in search of something very specific.
"These Americans and their coffee..." Gale found himself mumbling as he browsed the plastic shelves for a packet of tea to put in his hot water. He had still not gotten used to the black drink that tasted of styrofoam and something burnt, and much preferred the weaker, yet more simple, alternative of tea.
Unfortunately, however, he as not really looking where he was going and wound up running headfirst into someone's back.
"Ouch."
Rubbing his nose, Gale glanced upwards and found himself looking at a pale skinned young woman with long, light brown hair - one of the new trainees whose name already escaped him.
"Er," he said. "Hello. Sorry about that."

What to do? What to do? Should she just suck it up as Xedis had said? Just grab a mug and go? Either way, she would need her fix.
Drumming her fingers lightly against her cheek as she browsed the cafeteria for any sign of hope for her coffee addiction, Kat stumbled forward when something--someone stumbled into her, nearly causing her to fall face forward. Bracing herself by gripping the counter, Kat looked around, wide eyed, for the culprit.
Her crimson gaze landing on a younger boy--looked to be in his mid teens--as he rubbed his nose. "Sorry, was I in your way?" She asked, pushing herself back off the counter and into an upright position. She could have sworn she had seen this boy before..but all these hunters seemed alike to her right now.
"Oh! No worries. No harm done!" If anything, she was pleased not to have been carrying coffee at the time. That..would have been bad. She already had trouble cleaning one outfit, thanks to her first mission, she didn't need to clean another so soon. "Uhh, actually..now that someone is here and isn't.." She turned to stare at the cafeteria lady, only to turn away with a shudder. "Well, her." Jabbing her thumb in the direction of the old woman, she continued. "Do you perhaps know if there is some way to get better coffee in here? This stuff..I don't even want to start."

It was, perhaps, a good thing Gale had been walking slowly, since he nearly made the other girl do a faceplant into the countertop. And that would have been rather unpleasant, all things considered.
"Er, no," said Gale, shaking his head. "Sorry. I just wasn't watching where I was walking."
The cup of hot water in his hand had at least not spilled, though a few drops had landed on his fingers, making him wince. He held it a bit tighter, and nodded, giving a small sigh.
Following her gaze to the woman behind the counter, Gale eyed the lady suspiciously, then turned away, back to the girl in front of him. "Yeah, er...I wasn't really...well, she's not who I was looking for. Thank heavens."
More coffee, eh? Gale shook his head. "Sorry, but I'm not certain. I don't drink...er, that stuff. But if you need help finding a way to get some, I can probably see about helping you out."
He held out his hand to her. "Gale Gentry. Sorry, but I've forgotten your name?"

Nodding she rubbed at her arm. "Ah, I see." In any case, there was no harm done to her. He, on the other hand, appeared to have burned himself with..hot water? Now was that for hot chocolate, tea, or some other hot beverage? She couldn't decide.
Mentally shrugging off her curiosity, she turned her attention back to the woman in the cafeteria. Something about that woman..it just sent chills down her spine. She looked friendly..but she also looked like the kind of friendly who would stuff you full of candy, and shove you in an oven like from the child's books. "Who is she anyways? Do you know?" She asked in a hush tone, not wanting the woman to over hear her.
Aw damn. He didn't drink coffee? Well--not that she could blame him. If he was to start off drinking the stuff by drinking what the cafeteria offered, she wouldn't blame him for hating the stuff for life. "Yes!" Practically jumping at his offer to help, Kat felt a large urge to hug the boy. "I'm not even sure you can call the stuff in that pot coffee. I don't know what to call it. But if you could help me get some decent coffee, I would be most grateful to you."
:Your obsessed woman! Just look at yourself! Jack..:
Ignoring Xedis all together, Kat reached out and shook Gale's hand. "I don't think we were ever introduced, Gale. But its nice to meet you. I'm Katherine Taylor. Preferably known as Kat."

"I think she just runs the cafeteria," mused Gale, casting a surreptitiously suspicious glance over at the woman in question. She did not seem particularly...normal, in some way - but then again, neither did Doctor H and Caelius, so this was not really unusual.
Her expression shifted the moment he mentioned he would help her, her eyes alight with pleasure, and Gale was slightly taken aback by this sudden enthusiasm, his eyes flickering a little, a pale red dusting his cheeks as he tried to figure out why she was so excited.
<< Maybe she just really likes coffee. >>
Seems to be the case. Strange...
But she seemed like a decent person all the same; certainly a lot more friendly than many of those that were on the island (Otto's name rose to mind...), and Gale could not help but give her a rare smile, though it was just a half one, really.
"A pleasure, Kat," he told her, and then dropped her hand, setting his cup and saucer down on the table beside him. Tea could wait for now, and Gale nodded towards the kitchen door.
"Shall we try in there first?"

Nodding lightly, she wrinkled her nose before turning back to look at the younger hunter. "Well..I still think she looks a little creepy. And a little too happy maybe." There was just something so..eerie about the old woman, that just made Kat want to keep on moving and not look her in the eye.
Well, whatever. She would just keep her distance as much as possible, which..probably wouldn't be hard, as she never seemed to speak at all..
Kat was pleased to see such manners from Gale. A lot of the others she had met seemed more..casual at times. Gale, on the other hand, seemed pretty well brought up. Or maybe, she was just used to wilder crowds? Who knew. In any case, he was a nice guy. Looking from his face to his cup as he set it down, she turned to follow his gaze to the kitchen door.
Did they have more in the kitchen? Were they even allowed in the kitchen? Terrible thoughts of the old woman coming at them with a knife for entering her kitchen soon flooded the woman's mind, leaving her a little nervous.
"Are we..uh.." She glanced to the old woman, still busy with whatever task she had taken up, and then back to Gale. "Are we even allowed in there?"

He decided he liked Kat. Not because she was treating him like a mature adult (for once - so far the only older girl who had done that was Eva) - but because she seemed somehow different than the rest. She did not have the same sort of air that the rest of the older female hunters had, and she seemed to carry herself differently.
And she hadn't commented on his height yet. A+.
Gale's eyes moved across the cafeteria, following Kat's where they landed on the kitchen door. He hadn't ever heard of not being allowed in there - hadn't Bix nicked food from it before? But Kat's hesitance made even Gale hesitate, re-thinking what he had just proposed.
After a moment, however, he shrugged.
"I think so," he replied. "We'll probably just have to be quiet, is all. Not disturb any...er, unwanted visitors."
Motioning for her to follow him, Gale stepped quietly towards the kitchen door, glancing around beforehand as he did so. Then he pushed it open and moved inside the apparently deserted place, gesturing for Kat.

Glancing back between Gale and the old woman, she inched towards the door, tempted to peek inside. It was sad that, out of all the people she had met in Deus Ex Machina so far--this overly happy old lady scared her the most. Even more so then Caelius and Dr.H. Why?
Suppressing a shudder, Kat adverted her gaze from the woman and back to Gale. Unwanted visitors? Whatever did he mean? "Who do you mean, exactly?" If they were possibly going to bump into these 'unwanted visitors', she would at least like a heads up on it. Hopefully, it was something more trivial than she was expecting.
Still a little unsure if they were allowed to enter, Kat rubbed at her arm nervously before deciding to put her trust in Gale and follow him in. What was the worst that could happen anyways? It was, after all, just a kitchen. Maybe it was just the old woman who just had her on edge that made her so iffy? Most likely.
"Have you been in here before?"

To be honest, Gale had no idea whether or not they were allowed in the kitchen or not, but it couldn't hurt to try, could it? If worst came to worst, he would just say something like it was his ideas, he made her come along, etc. etc. Something to keep Kat out of trouble, since he wasn't about to make a new hatchling suffer Caelius' wrath.
Or Doctor H's....interests.
"Oh, no one," he answered Kat blandly, glancing around at the wide, brightly lit kitchen. There was nobody around on this side; the cafeteria lady was serving food to the various staff of Deus Ex, after all, and this side was starting off with storage, miscellaneous cans stacked higher than their heads up one wall. None of the labels were actually readable, though...
"Nope," said Gale, looking around for some coffee. "But Bix told me he nicked loads for the party - not very good food, but food anyway. Where do you think the coffee is?"

When she had asked the question, she was hoping that she might get an answer on whom he was asking, but when he answered her, she merely shrugged. Oh well, maybe he was just meaning people in general. In any case, it wasn't important--well, as far as she knew, it wasn't.
Following Gale through the kitchen, she was surprised to see how much supplies were stored here. Well..not too surprised. Its not like they could drive to the grocery store to buy their everyday needs--they would need to keep large supplies. Thinking of that, made her realize just how far away from society they were now..Well, there was no use dwelling on it. She had made a choice, and she was going to stick with it.
"Oh? Good thing he didn't get caught then." She grinned. Continuing their search, she scanned each box for labels on what they might contain. None of which was labeled coffee. Well--this was going to be a pain. They must have some in here, somewhere. They always had a pot brewed every time she set foot in the cafeteria after all. Maybe that was because no one else drank it maybe..?
"Hmm? Uh..I have no idea actually. Maybe down this way?" She asked, moving towards another pile of boxes. It was worth a look, anyways.

"Knowing Bix, I'm surprised he wasn't caught," Gale murmured in amusement as he peered around a shelf to make sure there wasn't anyone around. It seemed, however, the place was deserted - strange, considering how many workers there were, but it was a fortuitous moment, and that gave them just enough time to sneak around looking for coffee.
A shelf next to him was labeled Potatoes - Powdered made him wrinkle his nose.
"Ugh, this is what they feed us?"
There was a small clatter; Gale had accidentally knocked over a stack of boxes that had Dried Tomatoes scrawled across them.
"Whoops."
He froze where he stood, waiting to hear if someone was coming, but after a few minutes of silence, he straightened, shifting aside several cans of soup to reveal what looked like coffee behind them.
"Over here," he called to Kat, motioning the other girl towards him.

Snickering at his comment, Kat continued to scout the kitchen for any sign of coffee close by. Despite being stuck on an island, with very little chances to re-stock on food supplies; they appeared to be well supplied for a very long time. Even if some of the food appeared..distasteful.
Glancing over her shoulder to see what it was Gale had been speaking of. She gestured a small shrug and continued her search. "I guess its better than nothing at all? Though, I did wonder why it tasted off." Not that she was complaining, of course. Hell, she wasn't even all that surprised to find out that there potatoes were sacks of powder.
A clatter from behind her drew her attention back to Gale. Muffling a small laugh, Kat grinned at the mess Gale had made. No harm was done to the supplies, at least none of which she could see. They would just need to stack them all again before leaving.
Hearing Gale call to her, she moved over to where he stood, grinning at his find. "Excellent! Hopefully we can salvage some of the good stuff from this supply!"
Looking through all the different brands, she nodded to herself and looked to Gale. "I think this is good. Thanks for your help with this Gale. Maybe later, I can try and get you to start drinking some coffee--if this stuff is any good."
