As usual, it was early morning when Eva went out to the training grounds to practice on the dummies. Lately, her attacks had gotten slightly better--though she still lacked finesse, her slashes and jabs had become more accurate than they had been that first time she had practiced.

Or at least, she had been getting better. Today, it seemed that she was missing the target more often than not, even when it was right in front of her. In her mind, Chara sighed--she didn't need to ask to know what was wrong with her partner.

He has far more experience than you, Eva--I doubt that there is anything to worry about.

"I'm still concerned," She said aloud, lowering her weapon with a frown, "After that thing spewed smoke everywhere, I lost sight of him. And then when Caelius struck out at Reine..." Her jaw tightened at the memory. At that point--and after seeing the still living hunter who had been torn in half--the only thing Eva wanted to do was get her friend out of there.

You probably just didn't see him, Chara assured her, her voice calm, There was so much going on. You were worried. Distressed.

"I was also the worst partner ever. God forbid Davey was badly hurt and I left him there." Why why why hadn't she looked for him the moment the smoke cleared? She had been intending to, but then she had spotted Ryan, who had been badly injured, and then...

Maybe she should go around and ask if anyone had seen him.

The Hunters might not be able to make up their minds if this was a military operation or not, but that didn't stop Davey from treating it like one. He got up early; he trained every day; he darned his own socks okay, he couldn't do that last one anymore, bit hard with only one hand. He lived on crappy, crappy sludge that someone further up the chain of command had decided to mis-label 'coffee'. He really had to talk to someone about importing some tea instead. Surely that would be harder to screw up.

On days following missions that hadn't gone well (ie. every single mission ever), Davey trained twice as hard. Rising with the sun, he'd gone on a long jog around the complex. It was still early morning when he returned, sweaty and thankfully missing his usual Hunter uniform - he'd have died trying to run for an hour or more in that thing. Davey wasn't done, though, and decided to head for the training grounds and do some work with Azrael.

For once, Azrael had no opinion on this, still happily snoozing away in Davey's head. (Just because the stupid human got up at ******** didn't mean Azrael had to.)

Approaching the grounds, Davey heard a voice. He almost turned around, not much a socialiser, but there didn't seem to be a spoken response. Just a single Hunter training early, Davey decided, not one of the larger groups. He could deal with that.

To see Evie as he entered was a surprise. "I'd thought you'd be resting," he said, mouth ahead of his brain, just as he so often despaired of Before for doing. At least it wasn't offensive - he thought. It had been Evie's first mission, after all. He would have thought the newest of the trainees would all be recovering slowly, not jumping straight back into things. Apparently not so, at least not for Evie. Davey respected that.

"How are you holding up?" he asked. "I lost track of you during the mission."

Any hint of censure in Davey's voice was actually directed at himself. He was the one with more experience, who was meant to be looking out for one of the new trainees. He should have kept a better eye on her.

With her back turned to Davey as he approached, the young woman visibly jumped when the other trainee suddenly spoke up without warning. She whirled around quickly, eyes widening as she realized who it was. She heard Chara murmur "speak of the devil", followed by an even softer "I told you so".

Okay, fine, Chara had been correct--she obviously didn't have to worry after all. Feeling herself relax, Eva ran a hand through her hair as her lips pulled up into a bright smile. "Glad to see you're alright! And no," Eva cast a look towards Chara, her smile widening into a grin, "We're not going to get any better laying around, so we come out to train every morning. Chara always wakes me up--she's very effective as an alarm clock since you can't ignore her."

Ha.Ha.

The cheerful expression faded slightly as she looked back up at Davey, her brows pulling together in concern. "I'm fine, and you...you are alright, aren't you? No injuries?" She bit down on her bottom lip, her expression quickly becoming apologetic. "I'm sorry to have suddenly disappeared. All that smoke threw me off, things were moving so fast, and then when Caelius pulled out the body--"

She stopped. For a moment she was silent, and then she emitted a weak laugh. "That was definitely some first mission. Tell me the truth, Davey: does it get better or worse from here?"
PostPosted: Tue Nov 22, 2011 3:03 pm

Davey nodded along in the right places. It sounded like Evie and her weapon, Chara, had settled into a good partnership and a good training routine. Davey those both of those were important and boded well for Evie's success here.

"I'm fine," he reassured the girl. "I should have been the one keeping an eye on you, not that other way around. That's why we were paired up that way." One experienced trainee and one very-new trainee - despite Davey's concerns over the task the unknown Hunter had set then, at least she'd had some sense in pairing them up.

Considering the question took a minute. Better or worse from here? Who know, really. "I guess that depends," he eventually replied. "Like I said, I thought it was the worst mission we'd had so far. But others might disgaree. They might prefer it over having to fight monsters who can look close to human and try talking back to make you stop."

The mission into the haunted house had been an eye-opener for many of them, Davey knew. It was one thing to know that monsters were out there, and another thing entirely to have the monsters in front of you, calling you the horrific ones. No one wanted to die, Davey thought, not even monsters. Their thin veneer of humanity was just that - a trick designed to make the Hunters hesitate - but he wouldn't be surprised if it had worked on some of them.

Evie might find it harder to fight something that begged her to stop. No one would know until they faced it for themselves.

"I think time will help," he added. "The more you see out here, the more you realise that what we're doing is important. That we're doing the right thing for everyone. That can take a while to sink in properly." Even though they'd all had the recruitment spiel from Caelius back in their normal lives, it had all been theory at that point, even if they'd had proof. They hadn't had to face the darkness, to fight it one on one. But now they had their proof. And they had each other. That counted for a lot.

"It would have helped if I wasn't darting around like an idiot though." Eva pointed out, though the light laugh that followed indicated that she was relieved. The grin was back on her face, and she ran a hand through her hair. Phew, she could stop fretting now!

But...what? Fighting monsters who try to talk back--ah, right. "Ah, yeah...I heard about that." She shifted her weight from foot to foot as she thought, and then she suddenly chuckled, "It was a silly question, I suppose--at no point do I actually expect for this job to be easy, and the challenge is probably good anyways." At least, so long as she actually managed to survive, Eva was pretty certain that these missions would only make her all the stronger and more experienced.

And considering what the first mission had been like? Eva felt that she needed to get stronger as soon as possible.

"Despite what happened, I don't regret signing myself up for this," She admitted, staring down at Chara with a vaguely faraway look in her eyes, "The idea of actually getting to be a protector instead of the one having to be protected...that's kind of nice, I think." And already, she had gotten rather attached to some of the other trainees, both from the new and old group. God forbid she let anything happen to any of them.

Davey shrugged. "That's just some people's fighting styles," he said. A few of the others had speed attacks, he remembered from weapons training and the large battles. Not to mention that when the enemy came at you, you did your best to dodge even if that meant you leapt and rolled all over the battlefield. "As long as you come out of it alive and without endangering your teammates, it's all fine."

Easy was the wrong word, Eva had that part right. "More used it, then. And some parts are easier than others, in comparison, even if they wouldn't be considered 'easy' on their own."

The first round of trainees were slowly growing used to the job. Some things still shocked and horrified them - the pit of corpses had turned everyone's stomach, Davey thought - but they were far from the wide-eyed children most of them had been when first recruited. And some of them were just plain crazy and seemed to enjoy the weirder stuff (Candace, anytime she looked at Caelius' scythe, like she was debating offing him and looting the corpse for the weapon - and, yeah, Davey could admit he was probably in the crazy camp, too, at least if you asked the others).

Davey gave Evie a faint half-smile. "It's good that you don't regret it. And yeah, I agree with you completely on that one." It was why Davey had become a soldier in the first place. And say what you like about the psychopaths running this place and all the crazy s**t they put the trainees through, but at least they were still letting Davey serve a higher purpose when his country would have sent him home on a disability pension if he'd lost his arm in basic training. There were worse places to be than the Hunters' island (even if it was very hard to think of any some days).

This was all very good advice to be certain. It made sense that, eventually, she would grow more accustomed to what she was expected to face. As of right now however, she was still in the dark about what was to come. "You woke up with the first group, right? Were you..." There was a hint of hesitation, but then she continued, "Were you on that Island with the rest of us?" She sure hoped that she hadn't attacked him at any point, even though it looked like (almost) everyone had put the events of the Island behind them. Eva had as well--she didn't hold a grudge against any of the trainees who had attacked her.

Though that being said, she had died from a mine, not from being killed by anyone else. Were one of the superiors responsible for that, she wondered? And speaking of the superiors...

"If I may ask, what are your opinions on, er, Caelius and Dr. H?" Her own opinion of the two were not entirely favorable, though she did carry some respect for the former, while she didn't know the latter very well. "Caelius is my division leader, I know, but I haven't seen much of Dr. H beyond when I first awakened. Didn't make the best impression on me when he shot that golem in the head without warning us."

In fact, that had actually scared--and infuriated, if she remembered her feelings correctly--her quite a bit. It seemed good to get the opinion of a more experienced trainee though, especially since they had more time to spend with the superiors. Perhaps they weren't nearly as bad as they seemed?
PostPosted: Sun Nov 27, 2011 2:49 pm

Davey balked at the mention of the island. He didn't know why he was surprised - it was the most common question the trainees asked each other, trying to find old alliances, or at least a familiar presence. That connection wasn't something Davey had with the others. Dead too soon, and then working on testing the remaining candidates. It hadn't made him many friends on the island, and likely wouldn't back here in 'real life', either.

"Ah, yeah," he answered eventually. "First one awake. And yeah, I was on the island. Originally Delta 7." He didn't expect any recognition, but paused a moment just to check. "And then I was a fake-Reaper, working for Caelius."

Hopefully no one was holding a grudge for that. Oh well, it had worked out well for Davey (apart from the arm).

As for their superiors... Davey took a moment to collect his thoughts. "Neither seem to be well thought-of. At least, not by the trainees, I don't know about the full-ranked Hunters. Caelius... He seems to have a temper. Very no-nonsense sort of guy. Most of the trainees you ask will probably either hate him or just not like. But following his orders without question is what got me through the island. So I'm grateful for that, and I'm willing to do the same here."

Not to mention, Davey could appreciate the Death Hunter's all-business outlook. There were certainly times he'd wanted to hit his fellow trainees for shooting off their mouths or for juvenile behaviour. Caelius got to actually do it, and Davey didn't blame him for doing so.

Davey's voice turned flat as he contemplated the other staff member. "Dr H is probably the bane of my existance. The man is sadistic, plain and simple. He also seems to have warped his assistant, Clarice, to share some of those traits, so I wouldn't spend too much time near him in case it's catching. All Caelius cares about is the mission, but all the doctor cares for is his next experiment, and there's no telling if that's for the good of anyone."

A blue scythe and a green whip flashed across his mind's eye. "They're both deadly, of course. And, as you said, our superiors. We follow their orders no matter what we think of them personally." Davey shrugged. It was like the army. Pray your CO wasn't a douche, but there was nothing you could do if he was except make the most of things and hope that one of you was eventually transferred.

Davey ran a hand through his hair. His lips twisted to one side as he wryly said, "And that was probably not in the least bit reassuring, right?"

Delta 7...hmm. Eva shook her head to show that the name didn't ring a bell, though her eyebrows did shoot up at the bit about working for Caelius. "Recruited so soon?" She grinned, "I guess it gave you a bit of early experience with dealing with Caelius, at least." She wasn't too surprised to hear this, though--something about Davey seemed very...responsible? Perhaps that wasn't the right word. Duty-bound? Loyal?

...All those things, she supposed. Shaking her head, she smiled and then promptly fell silent as he began to give his opinions on the superiors, nodding every so often to show that she was following the conversation.

Caelius...she could agree with what he was saying. From what she had seen, he was a no-nonsense kind of man, which was probably a good thing. However, she found that he spoke extremely condescendingly as well, as if none of them were worth his time. Perhaps that was just her, though? Davey hadn't noted it, after all.

His description of Dr. H made her lips twist into a small grimace. A sadistic doctor--great, just great. "My...if he's the only doctor here, then I certainly hope that I don't get sick anytime soon," She mused, pressing her palm to her cheek, "He definitely doesn't sound like the type of person I'd want to be with for longer than a minute." Something about the man had seemed downright creepy as well, but she was unable to put her finger on what it was exactly.

Eva nodded again--whether she liked them or not, she knew that she would have to follow their orders--though she couldn't help but laugh at the question. "No, not very reassuring in the least, but I appreciate it anyways!" The young woman grinned, her fingers suddenly uncurling from around Chara. Before the weapon could hit the ground, it desummoned into its clip form.

"What brings you out here this early anyways? Training?" There was a pause as she brought a finger up to her lip, humming thoughtfully as she stared at the older trainee. "Have you eaten yet?"
PostPosted: Tue Nov 29, 2011 2:30 pm

Davey's mouth quirked. He wasn't sure he'd say 'recruited' that soon. It hadn't felt like there was any kind of guarantee back then. "Just another test, I think. Maybe I 'died' before they knew what to make of me."

And he still couldn't be sure just what he had shown that Caelius had approved of. Davey's seriousness? His willingness to follow any order, even if it was 'kill yourself right now'? ... His utterly annoying and slightly sadistic games to award the Hunter pendant? The world would never know.

"I don't think he's that kind of doctor," Davey looked alarmed at the very idea of Dr H treating their normal wounds and illnesses. You'd be more likely to come away injured from visiting the doctor. "I don't know if he made the bandages we use, or where they came from, but thankfully they seem powerful enough to fix most injuries." They couldn't grow back an arm, but nothing was perfect.

Davey shrugged his good shoulder at Evie's question. "I'm up early most days, to train. I haven't eaten yet, no." He could always take his run later, if Evie was heading for breakfast and wanted company. The first days here had been confusing for Davey, so he didn't mind trying to make it less so for someone else.

Another test...that made sense. "You must have done well if you woke up, though. Not...not everyone wakes up, do they?" There was a slight falter in her voice at the second part--she recalled the sleeping figures in the pod room and a shiver ran down her spine. What happened to those people who were still sleeping? Were they left there until--or if--they finally awakened, or did they..."get rid" of them if too much time had elapsed?

Eva didn't want to ask.

"Oh, thank god. I was worried there for a minute," She admitted, chuckling. "I figured that I would rather take care of myself than go to that guy." Pausing, she lifted a hand to point to herself, "Two years in the nursing program. Kind of disappointed I didn't get to finish, but as I said, I don't regret coming here." And of course, she had found it rather ironic that Chara's charged ability was to heal. She had studied incredibly hard to get into that nursing school, and now here she was, using some kind of magic to heal her allies.

Sigh.

Eva immediately perked up when Davey noted that he hadn't eaten yet. Well then! "Let's go? I'm surprised you aren't hungry yet!" Without any warning, she linked her arm with his and looked up at him expectantly. Maybe Eva was relatively serious during a mission, but outside of them? She was definitely one of those bright and happy types. At least she wasn't calling Davey "Puppy", the nickname she and Reine had given to Otto.
PostPosted: Tue Nov 29, 2011 9:07 pm

"No, not everyone wakes up." It was a sobering topic. There were still a lot of people left in the VR chamber. Maybe that number was growing, if Caelius or someone else was recruiting potential trainees from the normal world again. (Despite Hunter Island being a very real, human place, it was too weird to be considered part of the 'normal' world, in Davey's mind.)

"There were eight teams of twelve people," Davey found himself explaining as they walked. He almost missed a step when Evie linked her arm though his, but carried on and didn't break free. Between them, his mother and Sarah had trained him right. "And only nineteen of us woke up, that first time."

More had joined them over time. Jerry, the rude, weird guy had shown up at no particular time, just finally woken, either 'chosen' or 'won' whatever strange test came after death in the VR. Harrison at the same time. Then a break before the next round, of which Evie was a member.

But that left a lot still stuck in the strange pods.

"You were training to be a nurse? Nice." Davey could appreciate wanting a job that helped others. He'd done the same himself, though in the complete opposite direction. "I spent four years in the army. Was a Captain, and only a matter of time until the next promotion. So yeah, I know what you mean about leaving things unfinished."

Still, even a half-trained nurse was more than they'd had before. At least among the trainees, which were really the only other people they could trust here. No one wanted to take an injury to Dr H. Clarice was almost as suspect, through her association with the doctor. Caelius? Well, he'd probably just make any injuries worse, if someone complained to him about them. Aria had been the closest they'd had to someone vaguely approachable and it had turned out that she was the enemy. So the trainees were pretty much on their own.

Eight teams of twelve. Ninety-six people. "Only a small fraction of people have woken up then, huh?" She was glad that--to her knowledge, at least--no one she knew personally was stuck in one of those pods.

Her brows knit together as she thought of those who were still sleeping. "I wonder...would it be better to stay sleeping or wake up? Would some people regret having to leave the safety of the pod?" It was quiet musing, not necessarily seeking an answer but not denying any either. If Eva had only been a tiny bit weaker, then that first mission probably would have sent her cowering in her room for days. After that day, she had wondered what she had gotten herself into, but she had never wished that she was still unconscious and oblivious.

Eva smiled. Nursing school had been nice--it had been nice to feel useful for a change. She had spent so much of her life being protected by her parents (protected from their claims that she was crazy because she saw things that weren't there), and that also contributed to her reason for coming here. She wanted to be the knight for once instead of the princess.

She perked up at the mention of the army, eyes widening. "Really? You were...wow!" She grinned up at Davey. That was pretty impressive! Though she couldn't help but wonder: was that how he had lost his arm?

PostPosted: Wed Nov 30, 2011 4:57 pm

Philosophy wasn't Davey's strong point, so he just shrugged. "That must be part of what they tested us for - who'd be able to stand living like we do now. The ones who'd regret it and wish to still be asleep... they're probably the ones still sleeping."

He'd be surprised if the Hunters didn't calculate and plan for that happening. Surely it had been a problem in the past - someone becoming aware of the monsters and saying they wanted to fight, but changing their mind once they experienced the reality of it. No wonder they'd taken the tests in golems: the full experience with none of the reality. People who didn't pass just kept dreaming. Some might consider it cruel, but to Davey's mind it wasd better than having to kill off anyone who wanted to leave (because no way would the upper eschelon of Hunters let people who knew any of their secrets leave).

Talking about the lives they'd left behind was actually a less depressing topic. At least they didn't regret their choices. "British Army, of course," he said, in case his accent hadn't made it obvious. He didn't volunteer the story of how he'd left the army. Time hadn't healed that wound, anymore than it did for his missing arm.

"So, since you're probably the person with the most medical training on the island, I guess we come to you if we have any problems?" he asked, only half teasing.

And what happened to those still-sleeping people? As curious as she was, Eva had a feeling that she really didn't want to know what the answer was. She was just thankful that she had somehow managed to wake up in the most recent batch--at least that meant something, right? Davey was right--that part of them, the willingness to fight, was probably something that had been tested for.

Okay, enough of that. Eva shook her head to rid herself of these thoughts, turning her head to face her fellow trainee. "From England then, huh? I guessed from your accent." She laughed, but this was then followed by a wistful sigh, "I always did want to visit England someday, but the chance never presented itself. It seems like a lovely country."

Really, it was a pity that she wouldn't be able to fulfill those dreams of traveling that she once had. The only chance she would get to go to any of those countries on her list would be if she was sent there for a mission, and even then, she would only be able to stay for a few hours at most. But...ah well. She technically traded in one dream--traveling--for another--actually helping people.

And speaking of helping people? "I'd be happy to do what I can, but I hope you're not seriously that I am the one with the most medical training," She said, emitting another bright laugh, "There are more experienced Hunters here with such training, right? They would also probably be a lot more knowledgeable than me. But that being said..." She lifting her free hand to touch the clip in her hair, "I've learned that Chara's charged ability is healing, so if you need help on the battlefield, just give me a call."

They were nearing the cafeteria now. Wonder what kind of goop was today's special?
