Genevieve and Khaldun had been assigned to patrol together that evening; the orders came by phone the night before, spoken to one and barked to the other. It was something of a safety precaution these days, when being of such low rank left you nearly at the bottom of the proverbial food chain. Not how it used to be.
Well, this old outfit was. So were the feelings of complete and utter inadequacy he associated with it. Lieutenant Hematite was skulking around an alley, watching the back door of a bakery. Sweet... Something? He'd been in before at least once to try and con free food off of his former subordinate officer.
There wasn't much to do now but wait, pace, and periodically check one of the three clocks on his person in complete and utter impatience. Why couldn't they just get this over with sooner?

Not even remotely aware that Hematite would a) be on time, and b) be her former superior; Genevieve had closed up shop five minutes earlier than usual and used the extra time to lure back that one straggling customer that never wanted to leave when they were supposed to. Even though the sign on the front of the door was very specific. Either way, it had afforded the only girl working the ability to get started on energy collecting early.
She knew that she didn't have to, as she'd been told the night before she'd be paired with another Lieutenant but the order had been rather ... vague. Her orders were to collect energy and patrol with this other officer and keep him in line if needed. Always looking for a chance to prove herself and enjoy being in charge, the thought had left the girl in high spirits all day. Her spirits were high enough that she was actually humming happily as she pocketed her first pearl of energy for the night, kicked open the back door, and snagging a left over chocolate cupcake from the day for herself and her new companion skipped out into the alleyway.
Where she stopped dead in her tracks with the remnants of an 'ooh' quickly dying in her throat and two sugary snacks threatening to topple out of her hands.
