I've recently noticed that a bunch of films are being made about JAZZ musicians. The other day I watched "Ray" (wtih actor Jamie Fox), a movie dedicated to the late, great Ray Charles. It came to my attention that a boom of Jazz movies have been released recently. Kudos to Mr. J Fox for actually playing the piano part. *applause*
"Delovely" was a film about Cole Porter- starring Kevin Cline. Unfortunately, this film did not do too well with the critics. But the music was done by modern musicians. The title "Delovely" comes from one of Porter's songs- one that i enjoy playing myself.
Soon to be released is "Beyond the Sea," a film about the life of Bobby Darrin- Staring Kevin Spacy.
"Swing Girls" a Japanese film based on a real life prodogy High School girls (well mostly girls) Jazz band, was released late last year overseas. The actors actually are playing the instruments in this film (and some of them were playing for the first time), and they get pretty good- not as good as the original band the film is based on- but pretty good.
Other "Jazz Movies" include "Bird" - a film about Charlie 'Bird' Parker. In this film they took Bird's original recorded solos, but cut out the rhythm section, which they recorded with a modern rhythm section.
There was also "Chicago," and although it wasn't as serious as the others "Blues Brothers/ Blues Brother's 2000." (which featured famous Jazz artists). I'm pretty sure there was one about Sinatra, maybe one about Ella, or Billy Holiday, but i can't back that up...
Can anyone name any other JAzz movies? Is there a JAZZ ARTIST that you want a jazz movie made about?
Personally, I would LOVE to see a Michel Petrucciani film made. IT would be GREAT!!! He was Big HIT in EUROPE! I'm sure he had an interesting story for his life. He was a midget and a virtuoso Jazz pianist (his pianos were custom made so they would fit him). He has played with jazz legends, had jazz festivals dedicated to him, and was also a great writer. He is up there with all the jazz piano greats... Art Tatum, Eddy Louiss, and the LATE Jimmy Smith.
And a LOUIS Armstrong film would be AWESOME.

I wouldnt exactly call it a fad just hollywood finding something that's more meaningfull than blowing things up and people acting naughty. (although i love watching mindless entertainment) Jazz musicians led very colorfull lives and have been subjected to lots of hardships. Makes great storytelling for Hollywood wouldnt ya say?
Hmmm as for what movie i'd like to see made... maybe Miles Davis or Charles Mingus.

Billie. Because it would be a good cryer and pretty inspirational in a few ways. Ella Fitz because she's got some neat stories to tell. Oscar Peterson, same reasons.

I think one about Django Reinhardt would be absolutely amazing. I would also like to see one about Grant Green maybe and Wes Mongumery. Yeah, that would be a sight to see.
