A Bench In The Hallway

It had only been a few minutes since class had been out and instead of running back to the Common Room or the Main Hall, Cecilia found herself sitting with her legs crossed on a bench just outside her last class. Sadly enough, she had been daydreaming the entire time during class--how embarrassing!--and she was feeling rather spacey still. Her mind had been on the latest mythology book that she had checked out of the library earlier that day--she had barely been able to crack the book open before the first bell had rang, summoning her to her next class.

But now that she was free for some time, her thin fingers wandered into her bag and located the mythology book. She pulled it out and wistfully gazed at it's cover, watching as her fingers traced the hard-cover binding. Finally, she opened the book and flipped the pages gently to where she had last off and began reading.

As she read, sunlight from the window shone on her back and she felt absolutely relaxed. Cecilia didn't want anything to disturb her now!

"Catch that frog!!!"

Kennedy looked up from his potions book just in time to see Marc's frog darting away. He raised an eyebrow and watched Marc and a bunch of first years trying to chase down the amphibian. Kennedy glanced back down the hall the way that the group had come from.

To help... or not to help... that was indeed the question.

Carefully he closed his book and sighed. To help... Marc was his friend after all. Or was he. Kennedy started to walk the way the group had come. there was an intersecting hall way. He would get in front of the group and help them. He rounded the corner and leaned against the wall.

His plan was perfect... aside from the fact that Beans didn't want to go down quietly. Kennedy noticed what was going to happen a second too late. A girl was sitting reading a book... and a slimy frog was running loose through the halls. Beans was in the air heading for the girls lap. Kennedy's voice caught on a warning until it was a breath to late.

"Watch out!"

The mythology book had completely enthralled Cecilia--she barely even heard someone scream for her attention--let alone actually notice the chaos that was going on around her. Well... that was, until something slimy landed on her lap. "Eep!" She squealed, bolting upright, the frog knocking off her lap, along with her precious mythology book that landed splayed outward and the text side down (the horror!) As the frog pranced away, Cecilia stood paralyzed in front of the bench--her legs disgustingly moist from the frog's ooze--oh Merlin!

Closing her eyes, Cecilia swallowed hard and tried to ignore the fact that her poor book--her poor book!--had landed so awkwardly on the floor. She hoped, for those kids sake, that none of the pages were bent! Containing herself, Cecilia quietly leaned over and picked up the book from the floor, praying the nothing was damaged. To her dismay, several pages had folded and Cecilia felt so guilty. This wasn't even her book! A wee bit depressed, she folded the pages back to normal and closed the book softly together.

And that left the frog goo. Luckily, she always carried a handkerchief with her, and she was able to quickly wipe up the remnants of the frog. And that left the people who unleashed the frog. Wearily, she looked down the hallway from where the frog had came from. A boy was standing there and Cecilia had to suppress a sigh. Why were all boys her age absolutely miserable? "I believe your frog went that way," Cecilia indicated with a cool voice, blue eyes gazing steadily at the boy.

Kennedy frowned. As the crowd clambered past him. "Sorry i couldn't warn you in time." He watched as she rid herself of the frog goo and then raised an eyebrow at her tone. "S'not my frog... It belongs to the boy who was running after it... I... I have a nice and furry cat.... Folly is probably right now being as good as a cat can be all curled up in a ball at the foot of my bed."

He gave a smile. "I wouldn't be caught dead with a frog... vile creatures really.." He moved away from the wall toward her and looked at her carefully and then the book in her hand. "Ah...so your a bookworm huh? Thats cool... one of my friends likes books too."

Looking from her face to the book once more he bent his knees a bit so he could get a better look. "Mythology...interesting..." And that was all he was going to say on that... Kennedy liked sports and music... not books.

He held out a hand. "The name is Kennedy... Kennedy Anderson. Nice ta meet yah." He grinned

Cecilia gaze did not waver as Kennedy apologized and she just stiffly nodded in acknowledgement. What was she supposed to say? "Oh, it's alright"? Her book had just been rudely beaten because of that frog! And saying that he was sorry for not warning her in time would not change that fact--her poor, poor book! Finally, her gaze turned away from the boy and back to her novel, she could see that it was having difficulties closing because of the bent pages. She clicked her tongue softly and then returned her attention back to the... ah, Slytherin boy.

"Oh?" She inquired, listening as the boy explained that it was not actually his frog--it was one of his friends. Was he supposed to be babysitting it? If so, the fault didn't change. So he said he had a cat named Folly, but that didn't change much. Though Cecilia had to admit she enjoyed cats much more than toads, frogs, and anything else amphibian (though she thought salamanders were rather cute). Cecilia almost thought about telling the boy to go retrieve his friend's frog, but he lingered with her, still talking. "Yes, I suppose they are," She spoke in agreement to his frog statement.

When he began to address her fancy for books, Cecilia loosened up a bit--though the fact that he caught her reading a mythology book wasn't comforting in the least. "Ah--yes, I check this one out from the library earlier." She tried to wave the fact that it was a mythology book off, "It looked curious."

As she spoke, a new wave of sunshine shown on her back and Cecilia glanced outside. Great day for being outside, she noticed, sighing because she had yet another class to take before the day was out. "My name is Cecilia Aster, it is nice to meet you also, Kennedy." She turned back to him, giving a polite smile.

Finally, she asked, "Are you not going to go after your friend's frog?" As she did, she slipped her book back in her book and slung her back over her shoulder. "I'm walking this way, if you'd like to join me, Kennedy." She announced, glancing back at him momentarily. If possible, she'd like to go read by the lake.

Kennedy had to suppress a smile. He could tell that her book was bothering her more then she was letting on with a small grin he he shook his head. "I guess its probably telling that I am a second year...and haven't the faintest clue where the library even is." As she introduced herself he carefully dropped his hand.

He wasn't sure but her last name sounded familiar. He shrugged it off and then laughed. "Nah... Marc could use the exercise. Plus I really should be studying. I was going over the potions due for today... And then I was nearly trampled. So... As long as I'm away from my studying... Its time for a break."

He gave a smirk. "alright... Then I guess that's the way we are going." he gave a bow and extended his arm with a flourish. "Right this way if you would miss Aster."

Cecilia looked at him downwardly when he said that she most likely assumed that he as a second year--and that he hadn't been to the library yet. Odd, she thought to herself, she hadn't even distinguished him from any of the first years. Despite being a year older than she, he didn't look much older. Not that it made a difference what year he was in--she would've just assumed he was a first year. As for the library--well, Cecilia found it hard to be possible. Most assignments required some more looking... or maybe this boy was one of the kids who didn't care about marks?

"Thank you," Cecilia replied, beginning her way towards the lake. She did not take his extended arm though. The gesture seemed very over familiar to her--she wouldn't link arms with someone she just met! If anyone, it would be Jasper and no one else.

As they walked, Cecilia glanced at Kennedy. This kid seemed very lax about his studies--Cecilia's mother would kill her if she talked like that! "Oh? Perhaps you should go study then," Cecilia advised, feeling a little bit like her mother. "I'd be merely a distraction to your learning--shall we part ways here?" She inquired, stopping her walk and looking up at the boy with weariness. Kennedy so far had made a poor impression on her...
