The tide rushed onto the beach and dragged away with it some of the sand, leaving it also damp and somewhat sticky. However this didn't bother Katarina to much as she let her feet get soaked. It was a mildly warm day and though she didn't have a mokai of her own she would. A sigh escaped her lips as she watched the waters retreat again. She was in mostly her undergarments, though the white under dress was a bit higher than it usually was. Her cloak and dress were sitting safely on a driftwood she dragged away.

No one was out on this part of the beach so she thought it was rather okay to be a bit more free at that moment. Though she hoped no one really would come. With a laugh she ran to the water, getting water up to her knees as she laughed much like a child would. The cold barely bothering her. Her family had been sailors, at least the men in her family, so water was something she was used to. This island reminded her of a home she left.

"I'll make you proud." she giggled. "Promise." Raising her outstretched arms to the sky.

From the little skiff that he rented from a friend (for more than he hoped, unfortunately), Gavin could just make out the shoreline in the distance. He was getting closer, thankfully, but the gap between the boat and the beach was closing painfully slowly. Still, considering he was tired and had to row his way back, the speed he was going at was decent enough.

While he rowed he glanced sidewards at today's haul and other things he managed to fish out of the ocean. He'd been contented rather quickly and was setting off for home much sooner than usual; the blond was perfectly alright with that though, and the idea of cooking up some fish tonight motivated him to row a bit faster.

The closer he got the more clearly he could make out the form of someone - a girl, from the looks of that dress - standing in the water but still nearby the shore. Curiosity piqued, he rowed in that general direction and eventually was within earshot.

"Hey!" he called out, a wide smile on his face. He did enjoy meeting new people, especially women, and it always brightened his day considerably if he met a woman who made for very pleasant company. "The winds could be bringing in some nakahi; best be careful miss."

His exclamation startled her and she splashed up water in his direction as he rowed closer to blind him as she scrambled back to the shore to grab her cloak. Wrapping it around her so she wasn't as indecent she gave him a rather rueful look. "You always sneak up on under dressed women?" Her eyes narrowed just slightly.

Well it was her fault for going out as such, but no one should have been rowing to this part of beach, there was such thing as docks... Her light gray-brown eyes held a the faintest hint of admiration for this male though. He had gone out on that boat and for what, fish?

"I tip my hat to you sir. Or I would if I had a hat. Fishing in that boat." She could smell the fish, growing up with sailors and fishermen meant you had an acute sense of smell for things of the sea.

He didn't realize, from the distance he first noticed her, that she was in nothing but her undergarments. It was, more or less, a pleasant surprise. The blond saw very little though, as she decided to splash water at, and drench, him. He could barely make out her form scrambling for the shore for something with the salt in his eyes, but eventually he managed to clear his vision. It still stung somewhat, but he was used to it by now.

"No, do you always spend time at the beach in your underwear?" Gavin answered her from inside the skiff, still rubbing his eyes to try and get the sting out. The fact that his hands were also wet actually did little to help. "Thanks for the shower though," he said, still a small smile on his face, as he jumped out of the boat and pulled it onto the shore. "Goodness knows I could use it after hanging out with fish all day."

While he emptied the boat of his things, he regarded her comment on the boat and huffed, taking a seat once he finished unloading. "Not mine; can't afford a boat if you couldn't already tell. A friend of mine gypped me for a day's rent on it though. Can't wait to beat him senseless at the bar tonight," and he paused to add air quotes, "'unknowingly'."

She was still frowning at him. Of course she felt a bit sorry for him. Life on these isles was tough and you had to make due with what you had. For those with lower-middle class rankings, it could be downright cruel. Everyday not knowing if you'd get your next meal. Being a midwife was nice, but babies weren't born everyday so she had to pull a second job for revenue.

"You definitely need the shower." She agreed, "And no, I don't always spend my days here at the beach in my underwear. I am quite civilized, I didn't expect someone to come rushing up on the beach is all. Fish smell isn't bad, I mean there are worse smells that can linger on your skin."

Quirking an eyebrow at him about beating his friend made her cough her disagreement. "I'm sure there are more sensible ways to get revenge than beating him up. Though if you'd be so kind to turn around I can get back into my dress."

Making sure he turned, she took off the cloak and slipped back into her dark dress. "You can turn around now." She gave him a more reasonable smile, "Katarina Mechova, you are?"

"Think better of it next time," the blond replied, still smirking in recalling the brief memory of seeing such a sight. "There could be sailors looking over here without your knowing, and there wouldn't be anything you could do to make them stop." At that, he obliged to her request and turned his head so he couldn't see her anymore, and he closed his eyes for good measure. Wouldn't want her thinking things, after all. Gavin whistled a sailor's tune as she went about her business get dressed, and when she gave him the go-ahead he turned his head back to face her and opened his eyes.

...She looked better without the dress, he thought, but certainly didn't comment. Instead, he shrugged and leaned back against the boat. "He's been asking for it, and since you don't know him you wouldn't understand the idea of there not being any other way to exact revenge but to beat him into unconsciousness while he's nearly black-out drunk."

He let a beat of silence fall between them, content with leaning back and possibly taking a nap then and there, but sat up when she introduced herself. "Gavin," he answered, extending his hand for a second before taking it back. "Ah.. not to be rude, but I don't think you'd enjoy the reek of fish on your hand."

He at least had his manners, although his being violent with this man he had gotten the boat from didn't exactly bode with her. As long as he didn't cat call her though, she was fond of him. Especially with the sailor's smell. "I guess you're right. I should probably be more discreet about this sort of thing." Kat agreed.

"Is he really that bad?" She asked, almost shocked. She had herself gotten into a few scuffles, those she fought were quite surprised by her prowess. This girl wasn't all dresses and skirts. Occasionally she'd take to looking almost like a tomboy. The vests and pants were a nice relief from the average clothing of a woman, of course one could always tell what gender her was. Not that she could hide it.

Gavin. She'd remember his name and his face. When he withdrew his hand she was a bit glad about it, not that she had a problem with the smell of fish she didn't want to go home and have to scrub the scent off of her.

"Other than fishing in a dingy like that, what do you do for a living?"

"Worse, actually," he said with a click of his tongue. Thinking back, the only time he and that old friend of his ever got along was when they were both drunk and falling all over themselves. "But I prefer to keep it civil when we're not at the bar." The blond smirked at that, reaching up to let his hair down from its usual ponytail. His hair was about shoulder length now, and as he ruffled the blond locks into more a mess than they had been just a moment ago, he decided it was probably about time for a haircut.

"Oh, just about anything legal you can think of," the male proceeded to answer her question, raising his shoulder up in a sort of shrugging motion as he replied. "I don't have a permanent job, mostly by choice. I go around the settlement taking odd jobs and such for a small wage. Can't say it's always easy, but you make friends with a lot of folks doing what I do, and it doesn't hurt to have a more than a few of those." He volunteered a bit of extra information so she wouldn't ask questions that he often found himself answering when meeting someone knew.

"How 'bout you?"

"Worse? How can someone be worse?" She asked in mocked humor. "How civil are we talking?" She noticed his run a hand through his hair as if it were doing something wrong. "Too long for you?" the femme asked, noting the hair and pointing at it.

His line of work seemed quite interesting. He did bring up a good point there, when you opened yourself up to many jobs you met a variety of people, more so than you would in a normal setting. Though she didn't think she'd have the skills to do that and since she was a woman, she was limited in a male domineering society. "I'm a midwife. You know helping with baby birthing and delivery them. Though, I do a bit of side nursing as well."

Gavin laughed quietly to himself at her question, quite clearly amused at seeing someone rather shocked at the idea of someone being as bad as his friend. "We avoid each other for the most part, unless it's to conduct business," he replied to her third and non-rhetorical question, again with the shrug of his shoulders. "Unfortunately for me, he knows I don't have anyone else I can go to for cheaper than the price he gave me to rent this hunk of junk," the blond said, rapping on the side of the boat behind him with his knuckles.

"And yeah, it's getting a bit long. Time for a trim, I think.." the male said, taking hold of a lock of his hair and observing it with little interest. "Then again, I don't have too much money to spare at the moment, so I might just put it off."

Another shrug, then he listened as she shared her own profession with him, making an "o" shape with his mouth when she finished. A nurse, huh? That's pretty impressive. He estimated that she probably landed somewhere in the middle class, maybe on the higher end of lower-middle? He wouldn't hazard a guess out loud though, so simply left the thoughts at that.

"Commendable," he said with a smirk. "Which reminds me, I haven't had a check-up since I was a kid. Think that's a cause for concern?"

"That's unfortunate." She concluded. Though his comment about putting off cutting his hair made her frown. "Someone somewhere has clippers they can probably cut your hair with, or a razor. I myself have a few. If my hair grows to long I even use a knife. I could chop it off if you'd like. I think I'm rather handy, not trained but its not like it has to be perfect right?" She touched her mahogany tresses as it to reassure them she wasn't going to chop them any time soon.

Not a check up since he was a kid? Well not everyone had the means in which to pay for an appointment. It wasn't exactly to serious. "Not unless you're having problems with your health. Other than that, I'm sure you're fine."
PostPosted: Sat Nov 26, 2011 4:46 pm

The blonde shrugged at her suggestion. He didn't like the idea of just anyone cutting his hair, even though it was mostly unkempt to begin with. He liked to the idea of getting a nice, neat cut, and so he always went to a proper barber for it. "Nah, I can wait. It's just a trim anyway, so maybe to get my money's worth I'll grow it out a bit more to make it qualify for an actual 'cut'." With that he tied his blonde locks back into their usual pony tail, though a few stray strands still managed to escape. Gavin listened quietly to her bit of advice and nodded, satisfied with the answer.

"Good. I won't worry then," he replied with a smile. "I don't have money to get a check-up anyway. Might be a good thing to save up for though, just in case."

She nodded an understanding. Getting it done by the barbers meant that it wouldn't look so lopsided. Although she did it pretty well for herself. However the sun was slowly moving downwards, heading towards the horizon for nightfall and although it was her day off, she still had things to do at home. However she still wanted to sit and talk with Gavin.

"Where is the local here? I haven't been there yet. Maybe you wouldn't mind me coming along?" Though the bars usually weren't a place for a young lady she could handle herself.
PostPosted: Thu Dec 01, 2011 2:05 am

He was a bit surprised that she was interested in coming along. Most women preferred a quiet, classy place to have a drink of wine or whatever it is women indulged in; it was rare that one would be interested in visiting a local bar. With a smile the male got to his feet, dusting the sand off of his hands and his butt. "There's a few, but the one I go to is a ways into the downtown area of the settlement," the blonde answered. "If you're sure you wanna come, I wouldn't mind the company." He clicked his tongue and started gathering his equipment.

"I'm gonna go home first though," he said just as he finished. "Maybe change into something less.. fish-smelling. Not to mention I gotta return this hunk o' junk. How 'bout we meet by the dock in about an hour?"

Dock in an hour, sounded perfect. "I'll see you then Gavin. I 'll be sure to come dressed this time." Giving a small laugh as she bade him farewell and made her way off the beach. Tonight would be interesting. It seemed she had a 'date' tonight.
