Well the name certainly sounded pleasant didn’t it? Death something or other. Marcus was a bit adverse to things that ended in death. But the death hunter course, (and as was explained to him, called the deathsweeper. Good job hunters. Glad to know the daily pun quota was not to be missed.) was a bit.. foreboding. Apparently just one wrong move and you would end up dead. And death… was going to be painful.
For ******** sake he would even have to be in a golem for this. How did this prepair them for anything? Was having them die painfully in golems supposed to make them appreciate life more? If so, not a bad tactic. But if it was to improve their skills? Marcus called bullshit. Is was probably a course designed to make them all cry on the inside and never want to face a death hunter.
The poor bastards had to deal with Caelius as their leader. How they managed to not only put up with him but survive him… Marcus would never really understand. The guy was constantly suffering from a case of severe manly PMS. The dude also was suffering from a terrible hair day. Or week. For that Marcus could pity him. But he couldn’t… pity… this course. It was unforgiving, just like their leader.
God speed death hunters, you were mightier souls than him.

All ready to go, Marcus tried to relax in the golem. It was just a training course. The pain he might feel would be short and then he’d be fine. Looking out… he realized he was so NOT fine with this. Not fine in the least. Who came up with this idea it was like a masochist’s dream. Or a sadist’s. Oh wait that sounded like Dr. H. Duh, the guy might have been life but he did make the golems. It seemed logical he might have come up with hell trap.
As soon as he stepped out… pain. Terrible burning pain then-nothing. He’d died on his first try. Waking up. He took a while to regain his composure. He failed the course…. But he couldn’t give up. “Again.” The assistant nodded and ‘sleep’ consumed him once more.

As soon as he stepped out… pain. Terrible burning pain then-nothing. He’d died on his first try. Waking up. He took a while to regain his composure. He failed the course…. But he couldn’t give up. “Again.” The assistant nodded and ‘sleep’ consumed him once more. Sadly, when he got up and stepped back toward the field… he was again, filled with agony as ‘death’ consumed him.
He figured they had golems to spare as he chose to go at it a third time.

Third time was a charm right? Waking in the golem again, Marcus looked at his options before he went. The last two paths he’d tried had been auto, painful, death. So.. new route. Timidly stepping on a tile, he was.. pleasantly surprised when he didn’t find himself dying painfully or… anything. The tile was actually safe. Looking around him, there wasn’t really a way to tell what was safe for his next move and what wasn’t. It was luck. Or class A, god teir trolling.
Marcus bet on the trolling. In fact, he bet on that both regularly, and heavily. Not sure what that said about him or his feeling about the other hunters and instructors, but overall, not so bad.

Just when you got comfortable, the worst could, and often would happen. Safe on his tile, he went to move on another he. He died. Not by fire. Not by acid. Hell, not by anything he could see. Mostly since the second he felt the weight coming down, it was gone and he was back in the sleeper. Groaning as he woke, the ones in control rolled their eyes and asked if he wanted to try again. Before he could verbally give his answer, his head bobbed up and down, getting another eye roll, and another trip into a golem.

Was this just a giant trap? A trap on nothing but death? The one tile must have been a delusional dream because Marcus found himself dead again. On his first tile. This was getting to be damn near ridiculous in progress. How the hell did death hunters even manage this bullshit? Marcus was going to guess they either cheated, or he had terrible luck. Luck seemed to be a pretty good bet at this point. Luck and maybe failing to keep track of just what tiles he’d been going on. This was-
“Once more.” He grumbled out to the techs. If he died again, he’d take it and leave. If not-

This next time… he wasn’t going to be taking chances. Pulling out his flag, he whipped it out and- Oh. Wow. Good thing he did. Tile of death, avoiding and moving onto a SAFE tile. Yeah. Thank you he wants to avoid golem death kay.

That was it, he was so done. As his golem death took him, Marcus stomped out of the pod. ********. Death hunters.
