It wasn't his first time meandering slowly between racks of clothing, playing at small and unnoticed. Jude always aimed for the busiest times, when men in suits and women trailing distinctive, expensive perfume filled the place and occupied the attention of any wandering saleswomen. His own suit was outdated, a grey pinstripe rescued from Salvation Army but given fresh life with the help of a friend's sewing machine; that coupled with the crisp maroon of his shirt made him more than passable as part of the crowd.

Two things, and only two things, made him stand out. The first was the fact that, at seventeen, he was unusual in bot his clothing and his interest in the row of silk shirts he was currently not-quite touching. The second, ironically, was the fact that he so desperately didn't want to get noticed. He curled in on himself a bit, flicking nervous glances out of the corners of his eyes instead of calmly perusing and grabbing and retreating toward the dressing rooms to try things on.

He finally reached out to smooth the sleeve of one shirt between too fingers, and flicked a proper look up and around, almost guilty. Suspicious.

Phina was tugged down, her ear whispered into, a finger pointed. Her eyes followed the line of sight to land on a guy over by the silk shirt. She gave a nod to her employee waving the girl off and continuing on with her customer, but keeping an eye on the guy.

After a little bit she frowned and decided enough was enough, he looked so nervous that it put her slightly on edge so she headed right for him. She maneuvered her way through the rack and walked up right up to the guy, who she now noticed looked rather young despite the suit.

"Good afternoon," she said in what she hoped was her most welcoming voice, "I do not believe I have seen you in here before. Do you need some help?"

It should be noted that if you wanted not to be noticed at Phina's confidence was the way to go, definitely. As he acted now, it looked more like he was steal something rather that buy it, which was a shame he did look simple dapper in his pin striped suit.

Jude, unfortunately, was rather terrible at confidence. His default -- at home, at school, and especially in stores -- was a kind of cringing attempt to make himself look small, to go unnoticed. His immediate response to her approach was to drop his hand and let go of the sleeve, starting guiltily, and very much looking like he was planning on stealing something.

His eyes flicked past her and around, checking to make sure the place was still busy. It was, though perhaps not so much as he'd wanted. A slow flush crept up over his cheeks, darkening his ears especially.

"No, I was just...was..." The words fell like stones, nothing graceful or comfortable about them, and definitely not confident. He looked like a deer staring down the line of a rifle. "Was just looking?"

Phina could have laughed at his guilty expression, but everything about him told her he wasn't lying. It amused her slightly. "It's okay, no need to look so guilty. You should know that you happen to be drawing attention to yourself, but do not worry. I can tell you are no thief."

She gave him a pat on the shoulder with a gentle smile. It was the one she gave when she was trying her reassure someone. "Anyway my name is Seraphina and I am the owner of this here fine establishment. Do you like that shirt here, it a rather nice one, but I do think I might have just the shirt for you."

She gave him a wink and moved a bit down the row of shirt looking through they to find the shirts she had in mind before pulling one out and what she guess to be the boys size and coming back up. She then proceeded to grab one of the shirt he had been looking it.

"So now then, why not try them on. I am quite certain they will look absolutely amazing on you?"

She was a sudden whir of movement, and Jude had two choices: stay where he was and stare at her stupidly, or move to trail after her. The second was slightly less suspicious, he thought, slightly less weird -- so he followed, dark eyes flashing past her and around the store, flustered by the thought that people might be looking at them. Might be listening. Might over hear what he had to say. Jude chewed on the inside of his cheek and struggled for an answer.

"...um. I'm not sure...not sure I'd have enough to...to cover these." A beat, hesitation, uncomfortable, color very bright on his cheeks. He almost matched his shirt. "Right now."

Phina turned and looked at him realizing that he'd been basically window shopping only inside the store, still she shrugged. "No worries," she said with the grin. "No harm in trying them on, I mean really that half the fun of shopping."

Phina would here no more protest, so her hand went to his back and she gently guided him the rest of the way to the fitting room, before handing him the two shirts and giving him a rather expectant looks. If he knew Phina, he'd know she was famous for this, but of course he didn't so he was probably confused.

Her employees ignored the situation and favor of other customers and a couple regulars seemed to be happy Phina hadn't chosen them as her target, happily chatting as they browsed picking up a few items as they went along.

There were rumors enough, through the grape vine, that Jude hesitated with the shirts in his arms and only debated arguing for a moment. Then he stepped back, somewhat uncomfortably, to close the fitting room. It took him too long to try them on; time spent sitting on the bench and swiping at his hair and trying to cool the hot blush across his cheeks and throat.

Somehow, this made him feel younger, was reminiscent of days when he was very young -- when he'd get shuttled into the changing station at Walmart, deemed 'good enough', and cheap purchases had been made. Except here the shirts were of a fine enough material that he worried about his watch catching on it, took the time to strip off everything before he put it on.

And it worked. He poked his head out and crept around the corner, suit jacket in hand, to stare mournfully at his reflection. It looked nice.

Phina waited patiently for the boy to reappear. Really it wasn't uncommon for customers to take a while to reappear, even sometimes out of embarrassment on those off time when Phina grabbed up the wrong sizes. She truly hoped that wasn't the case, she thought she had sized the boy well enough.

She gave a smile clapping her hand together in delight when he reappeared. "You look amazing in that shirt, it really suits you."

She could probably be seen in the mirror smiling at him waiting for him to finish look himself over. "What do you think of it? Do you like it? Haven't had them very long, havent even sold too many." Phina was funny in that way, it seemed she was trying to sell the boy the shirt, really trying, but in truth she wanted to feel more relaxed even if she went about it in the most odd of fashions.

Phina bubbled over with her excitement: Jude, even at sixteen, was a sharp contrast to that, quiet and serious, his expression hard to read. Guilt would show, yes, and embarrassment lingered, but when it came to things he liked, Jude had the sense to hide it. Old habits, not to show when he actually cared.

So he just blinked up at Phina, still smoothing fingers over the soft end of one sleeve, and nodded a little. Hesitant. It seemed like she was trying to sell it to him, indeed, but there was little chance of that happening.

"It's nice." Probably not the gushing, enthusiastic reply she wanted, and also not a fair representation of Jude's thoughts. He liked it. He wanted it. He just had enough sense to know he couldn't have it. He took one step back toward the dressing room.

Phina wasn't the least bit pertubed about his less than enthusiatic response, she dealt with hesitant customers before and she may not have gotten I have to have this from the boy, but at least it wasn't I really don't like this.

She smiled as he went back into the dressing room, "try the other," she said sweetly, " see if you like it. I bet it will look just as nice on you."

Phina was very happy at the moment of course, it was always like having someone model the clothes for you and it was even more satisfying to have the customers love them and go home with them. The boy was shy and Phina thought it was sweet and kind of adorable. It made her want to hug him and pinch his cheeks, but that would be weird. It was then that she realized, she'd shuffled the boy around without even getting a name.

"Oh sorry I didn't ask before, but what is you name?"

She got a wide-eyed look of panic, and Jude's eyes flashed briefly around the store -- hunting to see if there was anyone there who knew him. His eyes landed on a three business women [separate, not together] fingering through the displays. No danger there. Flashed onto a girl still in her Crystal uniform, and that was hardly a problem either. Finally settled onto the bright orange of two older girls from Meadowview with a young man in tow...

And he flushed. They likely hadn't even noticed him. Likely wouldn't. But somehow, that still left him nervous enough that he couldn't bring himself to lie, even if he wanted too.

"Jude." It was a mumble, though, mostly under his breath, with a quick look back to the dressing room and his own discarded clothing.

"I should probably get, uh, get to work." This, though, was clear, brilliance, with a widening of his eyes and a quick look back to her.

Phina smiled at the boy despite he nervousness, she couldn't help but to shake her head wondering just what it was he was hiding from or so nervous about. "Well, Jude, you should change quickly, just leave the clothes on the hanger in the dressing room. I wouldn't want to make you late."

With that she walked off not giving Jude a chance to respond and hurried over to the rack which they pulled the shirts off and grabbed one exactly like the one he just tried on and the other as well although he didn't try them on. She took them to the register, taking the tags off and handing them to the cashier.

"There are better ways to get customers to come back Phina, you are far too nice," said the girl.

Phina shook her head, "its not always about that," she said making her way back over to the dressing room bag in hand fully intended to give the shirt to Jude, hoping he wouldn't refuse.

"Are you done," she asked softly.

Phina would be able to hear the way he startled, on the other side of the door, head turning around and hesitating just a moment before he offered it. Yes, he was done, working on getting the knot in his tie just right with one last look back toward the mirror. His hair, now, was a rumpled mess, static making fine blond strands stand up in every direction -- but there was nothing he could do about that but wait. Or maybe dip his head under the sink.

"Sorry." It was reflexive, the apology bubbling out of him. Jude double checked to make sure he hadn't left anything on the floor before he stepped out of the dressing room, hesitating at the clothes still on the hanger. Presumably it needed to be vacated so someone else could take over the space, and for this moment he was crippled with uncertainty as to if he should clean up before he went.

Phina frowned, it looked like this kid was a tough one to crack. She really hadn't mean to startle him, but she could here that she did. She waited for another moment, but it seemed he wasn't very interested in making a quick exit.

"Come on out Jude, you are going to make yourself late and you don't want that right. Just leave the shirts I will put them back where they go," she said really not wanting to make the boy late.

Despite his reluctance with just about everything Phina hoped the shirts would make him feel welcome to return. She also hoped he would take them without a fight.

Frankly she didn't care if her customers came and just browsed or just tried things on. It made for good experiences which brought them back and Phina tried to be a good manager and train her employees well, so she certainly made plenty of sales.

"I don't mind...that is to say..." He floundered, stepping out of the dressing room with a hand still on his tie and his coat over one arm. It made him look younger and older at the same time, a mirror copy of some high class business man in miniature. Or a young man playing dress up in his father's clothes -- except that everything fit him so damned well. Tailored to fit. He blinked up at Phina and huffed out a breath, finally moving to put his coat on again.

"Sorry. Ah. Sorry. Thank you for letting me try them on." There, the picture of careful politeness, except for the way the words came out a bit stilted.
