...........................:: name Artemis Kalends ...........................:: age 19 or 20, going off how old the people who found him as an orphan thought ...........................:: faction (intended) Obscuvos ...........................:: region Imisus: Edgecrest
...........................:: personality Cold and calculating, Kalends has been trained to plan his own survival and comfort first before those of others. His wit and sardonic tongue can make him infuriating at times, though usually he prefers to remain silent, wanting to evaluate a situation before expressing himself. He is merciless to his enemies and cunning, but has his pride: he only steals items which are dear to people, those things that present the greatest challenge for him to take. The treasures of the poor frequently hold no charms for him, though. He sees friendship as weakness and enjoys exploiting the foolish alliances others in his profession make. He never trusts, but lives in a constant state of doubt, plotting out his response in every worst case scenario so he's never caught off guard. His lifestyle has taught him to be cautious in dealing with others, but his ambition urges him pursue more lofty prizes-- he knows he will only live as long as he is physically capable of being better than the other thieves and he intends to make the most of it.
What he craves most, though he has not just begun to realize it, much less admit it, is to be remembered. He has been a nameless, faceless inhabitant of Eldecrest all his life. While he doesn't want celebrity, he does want a curious brand of infamy, for people to speak his name like they're talking about a bad spirit that comes at night to steal precious items. Strangely, gold and jewels have no lure for Kalends-- he dresses plainly and unnoticeably and lives in a meager, but sufficient apartment-- he enjoys thievery for the rush and for the pride it gives him in a job well done. He aspires to be the best at his job, as to him, his job is all that he is. Deep down, he accepts that he was abandoned by his original family as worthless, unwanted, and he views being the best thief the city has as his way of reaffirming himself, proving that he was worth keeping, that his name was worth remembering.
While he comes off as cold to new acquaintances and more or less frigid to familiar ones, Kalends does have weaknesses. He spares no mercy with children already in training to be pickpockets, but those who are alone on the streets and newly abandoned garner his sympathy. He's familiar with the House of Obscuvos because he's brought children uncorrupted by the streets to their orphanages. Although he says that it's to cut down on the number of incompetent thieves, he also has other, more deep-seated reasons for doing so. He likes to think he doesn't have morals, but in truth, though he won't admit it, he has his own strange code that makes him lead crying children to shelter and not steal from those too destitute to feed themselves. Kalends calls it pride, declaring that there is no challenge to be had, but that in itself speaks to the fact that the thief who says he is as ruthless as they come might have some hidden code of honor after all.
...........................:: appearance Lanky, though not usually thin from malnourishment, Kalends has lean muscle that allows him to run away from guards and disappear quietly into alleyways and crowded streets. His features are fairly unmemorable: he has shoulder-length dark hair and dark eyes, and his mouth is usually twisted into the sly smile of a predator assessing its prey. He is clean-shaven and wears dark clothing, usually either capes in shades of greys, navy blues, or greens that allow him to blend in more easily. He often wears gloves and carries a dagger rumored to be enchanted on his person. He is also capable of disguising himself. His most notable feature is probably his cat-like grace when he is moving between buildings, flicking from one to another like a shadow.
...........................:: history Kalends does not know his parents and has never, to his mind, met them. He was abandoned as a very young child and he acknowledges that it was a miracle that he survived past infancy. He was taken in by an older thief, one who was finding that his aging body would not allow him to steal things effectively anymore. This man became Kalends' mentor (and gave him the orphan surname of "Kalends", meaning the time of the month in which he'd found the boy) and tutored him in the arts of thievery while he ran his own shop as a locksmith. As the man knew how the break many locks, and the shop was one of the better known in town for its wares.
The man taught Kalends all of his secrets and all the lore that goes with being a thief. From age five, Kalends becoming a skilled pickpocket and decoy, and then as he reached his early teens, his mentor sent him out to practice his cat burglary. Kalends mastered each skill hungrily, eager to prove himself, and began to become known as a rising thief.
However, the man was old and the Black Death did not spare him. With his mentor dead, Kalends was not yet ready to set out on his own. He joined a thieves' guild and began to regret it. While his infamy grew while he worked for the guild, he found his own tastes beginning to clash with those of the leaders. At first, they found his requests to only steal precious items cute and granted him them. But as Kalends' skill became more evident to them, they felt the desire to put him in his place and assigned him tasks deliberately at odds with his preference, threatening retribution on him if he did not complete them.
Perhaps because of this reason, Kalends left the guild. Thieves who had heard of him were shocked. A thief without a guild could be powerful, sure, but the best thieves in Eldecrest were aligned in some way to a larger source of power for their protection. Kalends' move seemed rash indeed. And now, many are whispering that the reckless young thief will learn exactly how reckless he was...

This satchel is the very first item that Kalends ever owned. When he was taken in by his mentor, the man made it very clear that Kalends was living in a borrowed space, in borrowed clothes, to highlight the importance of ownership to a thief. Kalends felt like there was nothing that he could call his own until his mentor presented him with this satchel as a token of his completing his apprenticeship. Kalends was floored when he found that this would be his own, his very first possession, and has treasured it more highly than any gold or precious item he's stolen in his life. The idea of ownership, rather than the thing that was owned, is more valuable to him than all the jewels in the world. He continued to take excellent care of the bag and used it to hold his purloined goods. However, one day he found that the bag was sealed with some strange soot-like blackness. Shortly before that, his mentor fell ill from the Plague and died. Kalends believes there was a connection, that he was responsible for his mentor's death somehow, but has not yet come to terms with it. He knew that he should just give the bag up and use his earnings to get another one, but his pride won't allow it. Though he has many other possessions, this own will always stand out to him as his own, the thing that first made him feel not so helpless in the world and capable of achieving his goals.
