What was up with work anyway? It was like some kind of hydra: Every time he completed one assignment, two more sprang up in its wake. It wasn't as if he didn't enjoy his work - it was interesting to assemble, troubleshoot, and sometimes even design weaponry - but there were other things he wanted to do sometimes. Recently one of those things was card tricks. He'd picked up the skill out of a sheer curiosity for his ability to master it. Surprisingly, he was doing all right in that regard. He'd built up some dexterity in his hands as a result of his work, and once one knew the trick to it, all it came down to was the right movements at the right times. Lucas, enjoying a rare few hours to himself, reclined in one of the lounge's sofas, his back against the arm and his feet on the cushions. There was a movie playing on the nearby television at a low volume - something about criminals and airplanes. It was all right without being particularly impressive, and so he didn't pay much attention to it. His focus was, instead, on the deck of cards in his hands that he shuffled idly.

You know what else was some kind of hydra? Cupcakes. Those were what was on Azdeif's mind as the tiny legendary floated down the hallways of the base, her light, tinkling voice humming a tune that Alphard had taught her crawling into the edges of anyone's minds that she passed on her way. She didn't really have any idea just where she was going, but she just knew she wanted to go somewhere. Claire had been busy and hadn't done much with her lately, which left the inquisitive little half-psychic unacceptably bored.
The Jirachi happily bounced through the hallways as if rebounding off an invisible surface four feet off the floor, periodically breaking her rhythm with the occasional spin or flip. One such spin altered her direction towards a door - she didn't know what door it was or where it lead to, nor did she care - before she blinked out of existence.
She reappeared on the other side of the door and straight into the lounge, facing a very familiar human on the couch. Her humming abruptly stopped as she floated towards the man with a broad grin on her face. Lucas! She exclaimed happily, her bell-like voice poking its way into his head. She paused, studying the thin bits of something he was playing with in his hands, her mouth in the shape of a small 'o' as she held her tiny hands on her cheeks. One hand lowered and all but one of the fingers curled into a tiny loose fist, the last pointing at the cards he was shuffling. W'sat?

The weird thing about a Jirachi's voice was that it didn't come from any one direction, it just suddenly appeared in your head, as if it were in one of your own thoughts. However, Lucas's own thoughts didn't sound so girly, and so he immediately knew that something was off. He looked around momentarily - yup, that was a Jirachi. He offered the little legendary a smile in greeting and raised the cards as she indicated them.
"These're cards," he said. "Magic cards." Because what was more fun than messing with the head of an impressionable little pokemon? ...Lots of things, probably, but this was the most readily available so oh well.

Cards? She repeated, her mouth never changing from that tiny 'o' shape. She didn't use that to speak, after all. The tiny legend floated over and landed on the couch, leaning both hands on Lucas's leg so she could lean over to get a better look at these 'cards.' But then he'd said the most amazing and captivating word ever, and she looked at him as if he'd just told her there was a mountain of her favorite cupcakes just behind a door. Magic? The tone of her bell-like voice was filled with suppressed excitement, and she straightened up only to twist her tiny hands anxiously. Um, she started, peering up at him hopefully and with a sudden shy demeanor she didn't have just a few moments ago, show Azdeif?

He nodded as she repeated the word, still shuffling the deck. His smile broadened slightly at her mounting curiosity, and he gave a long, dramatic hum as if involved in the making of some great and weighty decision. "Well... I suppose I can show you," he eventually ceded, leaning forward slightly as he did so and fanning the shuffled deck across his hands. "Here, pick a card - and don't tell me what you get," he encouraged with a nod at the cards.

She leaned closer, her anxiety mounting as he baited her with that long, indecisive hum. When he agreed, she beamed excitedly and did a back-flip before bouncing off the couch and landing next to him again as he fanned out the cards. Um... One tiny white hand rested on his leg as the other hovered hesitantly over the cards, purple eyes studying them very carefully as if it were the most important decision of her life. Just one...? But there were so many! Which one should she pick? After what seemed like an eternity, she gingerly reached over to carefully pluck one from his fingers. This, she said uncertainly, lifting it up and turning it around to study it. Which way was up...? She knew not to show him - he'd said not to - so she finally ceased twisting it to stare at the three of hearts intently. After studying it for a bit, her violet eyes flitted from the card to his face and back again, before finally resting on his eyes again. Um... now..? What was she supposed to do next?

"Look at it real good," he said, "and make sure you've got it memorized." He watched with a grin as Azdeif fiddled with the card and fixed it with a thorough glare. He shuffled the deck back together casually while she stared. When she returned her attention to him, he cut the deck in half and offered her one of the halves, "Now you put your card on top here," he waited for her to do so, "and I mix up the cards," he cut the deck several times, "and now," he turned the deck face up and spread the cards in his hands, "as you should see, your card is still here somewhere; I haven't take it out or anything." He gave the Jirachi a second to affirm his words before moving into the last leg of his act, "Now I'll show you the real magic. I'm going to read your mind."
He leaned backwards from the card and studied Azdeif critically. "Let's see... It was a red card, wasn't it? Hearts. A face card-- no, wait, a number. A low number at that... Was your card," he paused - again, for dramatic effect - leaned forward, and plucked the three of hearts from the deck, "this?"

When he asked her to place her card on the half he presented, she did so, making sure it was facing down and all nice and neat before letting him continue. As he cut the deck a few times then spread them all out, she did note exactly where her card was. She'd almost pointed it out to him but remembered that the whole idea was for him to not know what her card looked like, so she refrained from speaking or pointing and simply nodded to show her card was still, in fact, in the deck. Her violet eyes were already wide, her whole posture apprehensive as she waited to see the magic.
He was going to read her mind? Even she couldn't do that. Her eyes widened and she placed both tiny hands over her mouth - in the characteristic 'o' of surprise - before flopping over his bent knees to stare at him anxiously, tiny fingers clutching the folds in the fabric.
When he said 'red' her eyes widened and her hands covered her mouth again, but when he actually picked her card she couldn't help but let out a gasp. Oh! She said, still covering her mouth for a brief moment before a little hand shot out to point at the card. It took a few moments before an incredibly shocked, excited 'yes!' flitted into his head, and then she plucked the card from his hand to study it more. How did he do that?! She handed it back before leaning over to inspect the other cards. When she couldn't figure it out - a realization that took all of two seconds - she settled back on his knees to fix him with an awed and excited expression as an anxious 'how?!' was the last word eagerly thought into his brain. That was amazing!

He almost laughed but did all he could to refrain - laughing would ruin the illusion. He couldn't keep help the grin on his face, however. This trick worked on most adults; he could blame the Jirachi for reacting that way. At the cry for an explanation, he raised a finger smartly, "Ah-ah-ah, a magician only has his powers so long as he keeps them secret." He traced a path through the air that concluded with his finger resting on his lips as if to emphasis the importance of said secret.

Even if Lucas had laughed, the effect the trick had had on the tiny legend would have been exactly the same. When he said the word 'magician', however, her mouth formed another 'o'. Magician, she repeated into his head, tilting hers slightly. What is...?

"A magician," he said as he ordered the cards back into a proper deck, "is someone who can do magic, like reading minds, making things appear or disappear, stuff like that. I'm a card magician, so I can do magic with cards." In an alternate universe, Lucas would have aced so many essays through pure and simple bullshit like that.

Magician... Her voice was awed as she repeated the word for the third time, staring at him as if he were the most amazing person ever. Probably because, at the moment, he was. A sudden thought struck her as her mouth morphed into another tiny circle, and she started twisting her hands anxiously, suddenly shy again. More? She managed to ask, then pointed shyly at the cards while staring up at him hopefully. More like incredibly hopefully with every fiber of her tiny being.

"Sure," he said with a chuckle. "Let's see, what will I do next, hmm..." He sifted through the deck and pulled four cards from it - the aces. "Okay, have a look at these cards. Aces, right?" He fanned them out so Azdeif could clearly see and study them, then placed the cards face down on the deck. "Now, I'm going to take the aces," he did so, keeping them face down, "and you take four cards too, but don't look at them yet." He waited for her to do so, then leaned forward slightly with a sly smirk. "Let me show you just how magical these cards are." He shuffled them a few times, waving his hand over them with a small flourish. He then lowered his hand and revealed the cards to his audience: a collection of number cards. "The aces disappeared! But - that's not all." He pointed to Azdeif's cards. "Have a look at your own hand and see what you have." The Jirachi would find that the aces had mysteriously appeared in her own hands.

She beamed excitedly when he agreed but quickly calmed down - and ducked down - placing her hands on the top of his knees, her tiny fingers splayed as she peered at him intently, only the upper portion of her face visible from her position. Her violet eyes darted to the cards as he held them out - aces - and she nodded eagerly.
When he prompted her to take four cards, she did so, and refrained from looking. It wasn't too hard - she was more interested in watching him do magic, anyway. Looking at her cards could wait, especially with the look he just gave her. Her eyes widened and she stared as he gestured grandly over the deck, lips parting slightly - but then she hovered up a few more inches and her mouth formed another tiny circle when he flipped them over to reveal that all four aces were gone. He made them disappear! How did he do that?
At his prompting to look at her own cards - she'd forgotten all about them - she did so, and immediately dropped them with a squeal. They-- it-- how--- All four aces had magically disappeared from the deck and into her hands. She couldn't even wrap her head around just how Lucas had acquired such amazing powers, and her amazed, awed voice reflected her disbelief. Aces! She finally said, one tiny hand over her mouth and the other pointing shakily at the four cards she'd pretty much flung into his lap. Aces! Aces! Magic! He was instantly and permanently one of the most amazing people the little Jirachi had ever met in her whole entire short life. More? She begged, too excited to be shy in her request this time, as she grabbed the aces from his lap and fumbled to hand them to him.

Oh Arceus this was just too easy. With a laugh, he patted the Jirachi's head, "Okay, okay. Hmm..." If it was just amateur tricks, he knew a whole slew of them. Fortunately amateur tricks was all it took to impress Azdeif. Her naivety was adorable. He turned the deck over again and pulled out the kings. "You know, the cards themselves have a little magic to them," he said enigmatically. "These four kings are best friends, and if you separate them, they'll always find their way back together. Here, look." He placed the kings face down on top of the deck, then took the top three and inserted them randomly throughout the deck. "They're all split up now, right? Let's give them a hand so they can get back together." He cut the deck once, then turned it over and fanned out the cards for Azdeif to see. "There, see," he said, pointing to a place in the middle of the deck, "they find each other pretty quicklyl." Indeed, all four of the kings were in a row.
