It has been two years since Amaranthine felt the ground shake under the boots of warring Darkspawn tribes under the Banner of the Architect and the Mother. Now the people of Amaranthine have begun rebuilding, the Vigil serving as inspiration to it's people. A young Templar has begun her travels to hunt down Abominations, looking for redemption. Our story begins as she nears Vigil's Keep, seeking information on the location of her abomination prey.

Anastasia Cousland

The road to Vigil's Keep had been a long one, a sigh of relief escaping the young woman's painted lips. Anastasia had traveled all the way from Denerim, her only companion the female Mabari at her side. Shifting her pack, pack, sword and shield, Anastasia neared the main gates of Vigil's Keep. In her hand was a piece of vellum, directions on what she was supposed to do when she arrived. Find the Seneschal, ask for his report on nearby Maleficarum... What a waste. Not all blood mages are evil, nor is anyone safe from demons... The thought annoyed the girl to her core. Anastasia was drawn from her thoughts as two guards stopped her, "Halt. State your business madame." Anastasia held out the vellum, "My name is Anastasia Celene Cousland, and I am here to speak with Seneschal Varel." One of the guard took the vellum, reading over the message, "She's clear, it has the Grand Cleric's seal. Let her past." Anastasia nodded, "You have my thanks." As she walked past the gates, she mumbled under her breath, "Men..." Looking at her mabari, smiling, "Don't worry Gwen. We'll be able to go home soon enough." Gwen spun, barking happily as Anastasia scratched behind her ears.

Diyanna Surana

Diyanna Surana sat at her desk in Vigil's Keep, looking over a duty roster. She sucked on the end of a quill as she looked over the parchment, trying to decide which recruits should be assigned to which jobs. She was the senior Grey Warden at the Keep, a survivor of the assault on Denerim, one of the last Joined by Duncan. She had been Warden Commander, but she'd given up that title to Nathan Howe. She was an elf, and a mage, which meant most people did not give her the respect which was due to the title. Her mabari, Blitz, was sleeping at her feet. Suddenly his head perked up and he started sniffing the air. Diyanna did not notice at first, not until he got out from under her desk. "What is it boy?" she asked, putting her quill down. Blitz was pawing at her door now. She sighed and opened it. "Wait boy, I need some air," she said, grabbing a cloak. Normally her dog would wait for her, but he ran out of the room with a bark. "Blitz! .. Blasted dog." Her tone was annoyed but affectionate.

Anastasia Cousland

As Anastasia and Gwen neared the Vigil's courtyard, Gwen's ears shot up, sniffing around. Gwen rolled on her back, then getting up, she rushed into the Keep's main building. "Gwen! Where are you-? Maker's breath that mabari is more trouble than she's worth sometimes." Shifting her pack, Anastasia chased after her hound. As she rounded a corner, she lost track of the beast, stopping where she stood. "Rotten dog. Damned child is lucky I love her." She started down the corridor she'd lost Gwen in, calling the mabari's name. Several soldier's looked at her strangely, to a few of which she shot a dirty look. Mabari or not, Gwen was still a dog, and bound to have wandered off sometime or another. Stopping one soldier, she asked for directions to the Keep's main hall, figuring that the hound may have smelled whatever the cook was making so she could beg for scraps. Gwen had always done such with Nan, the devious creature she was, and Anastasia knew well enough not to assume she wouldn't.

Diyanna sped past guards, civilians and recruits alike as she followed her dog. She heard some snickering from those she passed; the sight of the slight elf girl pelting after the mabari was a familiar one to them, but that made it no less embarrassing for her. Being so short and slender made it hard for her to command respect, which was exactly why Nathaniel Howe was now Warden-Commander of Fereldan. Despite his father's atrocities, or maybe because of them, people still liked Nathaniel, and more importantly respected him.

Passing over a threshold the elf lost her footing and tripped, ending up flat on the ground. "Andraste's drunken uncle.." she muttered, getting back to her feet and brushing herself off. Her spill hadn't been witnessed, but now she'd lost track of her dog. She heard barking in a nearby corridor and went that way. "Gotcha, you flea ridden..." she began, until she noticed the hound's kaddis was wrong. To the best of her knowledge there weren't other Mabari in the Keep at the moment. She rubbed the back of her head in confusion and exasperation. "Good grief, and who are you?"

Anastasia Cousland

Turning down a hall, she spotted Gwen. As she walked towards her, another Mabari hound rushed past her, knocking her flat on her bottom. "Andraste's knicker weasels!" Slowly getting up, she groaned, "Did anyone get the name of the cart that just hit me? No? Figures..." Looking over she noticed Gwen playing with the Mabari who had barreled into her. "Gwen! There you are!" She walked over to the two hounds, seeing a elvhen woman in robes as she neared.

"Oh my apologies!" Whistling, Anastasia patted her side. Gwen quickly lifted her head, then lowered her ears looking at the other mabari before returning to her master's side. "I'm so sorry if she bothered you. We were just looking for the Senechal when Gwen decided to bolt. May I ask you name miss?" Anastasia smiled, sloely turning it into a smirk. She had a thing for elvhen women, and the robes implied this one was a mage, which would make it all the more 'magical'.

"I am Diyanna Surana," she said softly. "That's Blitz, I think he got wind of your Gwen. He's the only mabari here for now, so he probably wanted some company. Gwen was no bother, more of a shock. Anyway, I can show you to the Senechal's office. It isn't that far," she said. She smiled warmly at her, then headed down the hall. "Come on Blitz, you silly mutt." Her tone was affectionate as she put her hand on Blitz's head.

She looked over her shoulder to make sure the stranger was following her. She knew she should probably as this woman what her name and business was, but Blitz was a good judge of character, and she could sense no threat from her. But, she should be smart about this. ".. So who are you?" she asked.

Anastasia Cousland

Anastasia smiled, "I am Knight Templar Anastasia Genevieve Eleanor Cousland. Well ex-Knight Templar. Just call me Staci." She took Diyanna's hand, kneeling as she kissed it. Suddenly she got red, "Oh my apologies. Old habits die hard." She stood up, letting go of Diyanna's hand. "I am here to recieve information on a local abomination sighting. The one thing that makes me different from other Templars. I don't hunt mages, just Abominations."

She looked at Gwen, "I'm glad to see the young lady here didn't bother you Lady Surana. She can be a handful, as I'm sure you know having a Mabari of your own." She made a clicking noise as she waved her hand, Gwen responded by running over to her new companion, Blitz.

Diyanna's cheeks flushed brightly at Staci's .. greeting. "Oh please... there's no need to kneel, really," she said. "And I'm not a Lady... I'm just an elf.." She watched the two dogs for a moment, trying to regain her composure. As she did, one of her recruits ran up to her.

"Begging your pardon Commander, but we need you final approval on the duty roster," he said, giving her a curt bow. All that seemed to accomplish was fluster her more.

".. It's on my desk, Bron. Please take it to Howe, and remember he's Commander now, not me." As the recruit bowed again and took off she looked at Staci. ".. Sorry about that. Anyway, the Senechal's office is just down the hall here. I hadn't heard anything about an Abomination, but I've been rather busy as of late."

Anastasia Cousland

Anastasia narrowed her eyes, "So you are secretly a man under those robes? Regardless of race my lady, you are a woman. And a Warden is worthy of a title." She smirked as she mentioned the fact Diyanna was a Warden. "Or should I call you Warden Commander, my lady?" She grinned as the recruit scurried off, her tone serious, "Hmm. I had received reports hunters in the area had spotted figures matching the description of Abominations, but they wouldn't give a location for fear of me 'walking through those cursed lands'. That was all I was told, and her Reverence said she had requested information for me. Her final favor for... good service." Anastasia giggled as she said the last part, a wickedness in her smile.

Diyanna shook her head. "I'm not the Commander, just a Warden," she said softly. ".. And don't judge the hunters too harshly. The people of Amaranthine have been through a lot recently, and they're still waiting for the other shoe to drop, as the saying goes. Actually, an Abomination is rather mild compared to what they've been seeing here, sad as that may be. Anyway.. this is the Senechal's office. I can take Gwen to the kennel, if you like. There's food there for mabaris, and the Senechal.. is not a fan of dogs. You'll have better luck talking to him if Gwen isn't there. Sorry girl," she added for Gwen. She was sure the dog would know she was being talked about. Mabari's always did.

Anastasia nodded, "I've heard. I may not have been here, but I keep my ear to the ground. I don't blame them." She looked at Gwen, smirking, "Hear that Gwen? You gotta go play with your boyfriend for a bit." Anastasia was merely teasing the mabari, but Gwen got excited, spinning in a circle before dropping to a play position. Smirking, Anastasia looked to Diyanna, if you could keep an eye on her, I won't be long. I'm just collecting report files." She winked at the elvhen Warden, hinting at deviousness that would make certain pirates blush, her grin defying her Templar status. She turned to the throne room, walking through the massive double doors.

Diyanna flushed a little, charmed by this Lady Templars... flirtatious manner. Diyanna had never been attracted to women before, but it had been a long time for her. Perhaps... she shook her head. "Stop daydreaming girl," she said, leading to the two hounds towards the kennel. "Come, beasts," she said, teasing them.

As she walked through the halls, flanked by the dogs, she wondered if there was any truth to the Abomination rumor. She'd certainly seen her fair share of those when they'd overrun the Circle of Magi. She knew Templars were trained to deal with them, but she remembered the halls full of corpses, both mages and Templars, people she'd known all her life...

An errant tear rolled down her cheek. She shook her head. She'd seen her fair share of atrocities, and she'd already wept her tears for the dead. In private, as was proper.

"All right beasts, in you go," she said, opening the door to the kennel.
