Xerxes sat on one of the benches in the outdoor gardens at the Makai Royal Academy. He decided to come out where it was nice and quiet to practice one of the spells that he had learned recently in class. It was a simple levitation spell for moving light objects around. He had brought a stack of his books out with him and was practicing on trying to move the stack book by book from one spot to another spot. During class, he hadn't done very well at it, barely managing to get a small paper weight to lift even an inch off the desk. His luck with the books wasn't any better so far.
When he tried to levitate one book, the whole stack ended collapsing into large, messy pile on the ground at his feet. Xerxes sighed and rubbed tiredly at his face. If they had to demonstrate levitation for a test, he feared he would receive a failing mark on it. "I'm never going to get this," he complained to the empty garden. He hopped down off the bench and knelt down to pick up the books and stack them again. He was determined to keep practicing until he could do it right, as hopeless as it was looking at the moment.
Maybe this type of magic wasn't for him. It was a passing thought as he got back to his feet. Xerxes knew everyone had a magic that they were proficient at, but so far, he felt rather mediocre at everything. He dropped down on the bench and dropped his gaze to the stack of books. Was it possible not to have a magical concentration? He was beginning to worry that when it was his time to go through the Grave of Fairies trial, they would tell him that he had no magical concentration at all. What if he was a magical dud? All he seemed to be able to do well was transform into a cat.

Perenna was hiding out in her bird-form hiding away from the rest of the crowds at the academy. She was high up in a tree, basking in the sun where she was sure no one would spot her orange feathers. Being outside, feeling the sun and the breeze up there made her relax and close her eyes. She was ready for a quick nap until she heard a loud thud coming from the ground. Afraid that something was wrong, she flew down.
The little bird saw that it was a Mononoke like herself, a boy with cute ears and a belled tail. She hovered in the air looking at him, watching his determination to practice the spell. "Hm.. Maybe I should help?" Perenna landed in a nearby tree and watched how the boy would try the spell but do something wrong. It didn't stop him though, from picking up the books and trying again.
She took off from her perch and flew around his head, making sure that her presence was known before she looked around to make sure it was safe for her to change. Perenna didn't really want other people to know she was there. When she felt ready, she hovered above the ground and transformed back into her human form.
Perenna gave the boy a gentle smile. "Do you need a practice partner?"

Xerxes finished piling the books up into a tall stack that was slightly wobbly from not being entirely straight. He realized belatedly that there was probably little point in stacking the books by hand again and again after each attempt caused the stack to topple over with loud thuds. Since he was practicing levitation spells, he could simply leave the books in their disheveled pile and use the spell to reorganize them into a stack. Shaking his head, Xerxes took a seat on the bench again, readying for another attempt. He had lost count of how many times he had tried to master this spell.
His attention was so focused on concentrating on lifting the top book into the air that he gave no notice to the orange plumed bird hovering. He didn't even see when she transformed into a human. But when she spoke and the silence was broken, Xerxes jumped up from the bench, the stack of books collapsing yet again into a disorganized pile. His ears flattened back against his head at the noise, a soft jingle ringing from the bell attached to one ear as it bobbed and bounced against his head. His hair on his tail puffed out in his surprise.
Xerxes lifted his head as a heated flush bloomed across his cheeks. "Sorry. I didn't see you there," he said with a nervous laugh. He put on a smile. This girl at least seemed to be nice. His gaze darted to the pile of books. "Ah," he bit his lip. "Are you any good with levitation spells?"
