At the very least you should specify a class you prefer.
Some people are better with fighters, but other prefer to be a ranged attacker, or a healer. Do you prefer swords, guns, bows, or magic.
And most threads will have what level you start with, so pick what RP you want to join before you make the character.
Then choose a personality, is he quick and nimble, or slow yet strong. Does he prefer the lone path or joining a large group. Is he a leader? Does he prefer to protect others? Or is he happy being an all rounder, a bit of healing, a bit of fighting, a bit of defense.
From that we at least can plan a good group of stats for your character, get him suited up decently...then you are free to work on the additional background information/traits etc.

While, i agree with Seph that the actual personality of the character is going to influence a few things, i'll at least help you get the base of it, meaning race, stats, class, skills, and feats. So, an elf ranged attacker? Best option is either a rogue or a ranger, ranger being a little more caster worthy though, and with the addition of an animal companion. A rogue, however, is great for dealing with traps, and have a little more avoidance than the ranger does. So, either or, you'll just have to pick of those. Of coruse, for some real survivability in battle, you can't forget the power house that is a fighter.

Being a fighter with feats in ranged combat is far superior to anything the other classes offer for ranged combat.

True, but looking at more than just combat utility, Ranger's get a companion and rogues have trap disarming, so, just depends on what ya need :3
