Ennéa walked into the Minipet Labs, feeding pail in hand. She had donned a pair of grey coveralls and a thick pair of leather gloves that one of the Life Hunter techs on duty insisted that she wear. She made a face and tugged on the coverall for what seemed the thousandth time. Ugh, these things were itchy and they bunched at the knees and were obviously meant to be worn by someone larger than her.

She shoved open another door and then paused, coveralls totally forgotten. "Whoa..." She breathed, staring at the glass cages that extended all the way along the walls of the huge room. In each were creatures of every shape and size and color. "It's like a zoo!"

Ennéa carelessly put her pail down and went to examine one of the cages; there was a fuzzy creature that looked a lot like Mrs. Parlam's neurotic Pomeranian back home... only violently green. In fact, it was so green it practically glowed. Ennéa tapped on the glass and then noticed a notecard underneath the cage that read: Foxfire - Irradiated (rare).

"Neat." She said, bemused. She moved on to the next cage which contained, according to the card, a Foxfire - Junk (uncommon).

Gale was wondering how he had gotten roped into this.

"When I said I was bored, I didn't mean desperate."

<< Be grateful you're not doing something worse. Like, for instance, having to work under Doctor H or something. >>

"Because that would just be a truly delightful walk through the tulips, now wouldn't it?"

<< Someone certainly woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning. >>

"Maybe that's because you woke me up with your squawking."

<< I beg your pardon. I do not SQUAWK - >>

This went on for the entire walk down to the Minipet Labs, where Gale had agreed to spend the better part of his morning. He couldn't deny that Jinhai was right, though - working with the strange creatures of Halloween Town was infinitely better than being under the thumb of Doctor H - or Caelius, heaven forbid.

Gale shuddered just thinking about it.

When he pushed open the door to the Lab, dressed in a pair of worn jeans and a teeshirt, his Manchester United cap donned, he was greeted by a cacophony of sound and sight. Mewling, honking, cackling, squawking, screeching, tinkling - anything and everything seemed to be in these cages.

"Blimey," muttered Gale, his eyes sweeping the room. "This is - wait."

There was something in there that didn't quite fit with the rest of the pets - or rather, someone. Blinking in surprise, Gale made his way across the floor towards the figure peering into one of the cages.

Reaching out to tap her shoulder, he said hesitantly "It's Ennéa, isn't it?"

Ennéa turned from the cage she was peering at, Foxfire - Shadow (rare), to look at the hunter who had addressed her. Surprisingly, she didn't have to look too far up, which was nice. It got a little tiring always been loomed over by Robert and Jordan and practically everyone else. "Yep, I'm Ennéa. Hello." She said pleasantly if somewhat distractedly.

She then looked back at the foxfire in the cage. The shadowy figure hissed at her; its tiny jaws opening and closing, full of needle-sharp pointed teeth. Oddly though, the creature's tail was wagging enthusiastically. "Aren't they neat? I never even knew we had a facility like this until I got called for minipet feeding duty." She tapped the glass and the foxfire lunged, scrabbling at the smooth surface with is tiny claws.

They're just stupid poof-balls. Baraz groused. Ennéa ignored him.

"Are you on feeding duty too?" She asked as she stepped away and picked up her pail. "I've never done this before." She admitted. Ennéa picked up a small candy from the pail and twisted it between her fingers. "I wonder why they feed the minipets candy? Doesn't seem like a balanced diet to me. Do you know?"

She looked expectantly at the other hunter but then flushed slightly. "No wait, where are my manners? You're Bii-- er, Gale? Right?" She extended her hand to shake. "Nice to meet you!"
PostPosted: Thu Nov 10, 2011 12:17 am

"Er - hello," said Gale, following Ennéa's gaze where it was directed at one of the cages (Foxfire - Shadow (rare)). The creature looked like a cottonball that had been burnt to a crisp and then stolen someone's sharp dentures.

Freaky.

<< They're called foxfires. They're quite cute, actually. >>

Oy, vey.

"I never knew this place existed either," admitted Gale, running his hand over the top of one of the cages. "I just got called this morning."

He stooped beside one, peering into the depths until he saw something cowering in the corner (Bellore - Black (uncommon)).

"Weird..." he muttered, half to himself, then straightened, turning back to the other hunter, blinking.

"Er..." Gale started to say, slightly bemused, but then Ennéa offered him her hand and though it took him a moment to realize what she was doing, Gale reached out and took it, giving it a firm shake.

"Gale, yes," he replied with a nod. He gestured lamely to the cages surrounding them. "Well, at least we don't have to work alone, though I'm still a bit clueless as to what exactly we're supposed to be doing."

"Yeah, I'm glad you came along." Ennéa looked down the long rows of cages upon cages and shook her head. "Really glad. Doing this alone would probably take all day." She grinned at Gale. "At least we didn't pull kitchen duty, huh? I bet they make the trainees peel mountains of potatoes or clean out the grease traps." Ennéa paused. "Er...have you had kitchen duty yet? Do you know?" She looked at him curiously.

"One of the techs explained what we're supposed do here." She went on. "Basically, we feed each mini-pet this special sort of candy -- one a piece."

Ennéa idly juggled the piece of candy she was holding from hand to hand and then up into the air. A couple of assorted Geophyllis in the nearby cages noticed the candy and started excitedly squeaking and running back and forth. They knew it was feeding time. The commotion also set the nearby Hazmutts barking an odd sort of muffled bark behind their masks and the chaos spread from there. Pretty soon, the whole room was a cacophony of squawks and roars and squeaks and growls.

Nice going. Baraz said sarcastically.

Ennéa dropped the candy she was fiddling with back into the pail. "Oops." She said, looking sheepish. "Well, I guess we'd better start feeding them before they make us deaf." She said wryly.
PostPosted: Mon Nov 14, 2011 12:37 pm

Gale felt his cheeks turn slightly red. He was not used to talking with girls his own age, so he was not quite sure how exactly to act around Ennéa. He gave a small nod, however, and glanced around at the dozens of cages that lined the walls.

"I think I'd rather feed a bunch of strange animals than have to cook - or peel potatoes," he added wryly, shaking his head. "I find I'm not exactly the best when it comes to cooking - and no, not yet," Gale said, shaking his head as he looked back at her. "I hope I don't ever have to, to be honest."

The candy she was holding out looked normal enough, at least for something that came from that damned Halloween place. Gale stood a short ways behind Ennéa and watched, waiting for her to drop it into one of the cages, but she only played with it - which resulted in a cacophony of squawks, roars, and a myriad of other sounds from the creatures. A few rabbit looking ones (Treat - Dimension (Uncommon)) made chittering noises, pressing themselves up against the bars.

<< It's like being back at Amityville, >> murmured Jinhai, and Gale just rolled his eyes.

"Here," said Gale, and reached into the pail, scooping out a handful of candy. "I'll go down the right side of this row, and you can go down the left."

He made his way through the crowded, cramped row and pushed the first piece of candy through the bars to the Dimension Treat - who promptly scarfed it up greedily.

"So, er," said Gale, feeling horribly awkward. "How...are you liking Deus so far?"

"Okay! Sounds good." Ennéa said cheerfully to Gale's suggestion. She scooped up a handful of candies and started her way down the left side of the row. An odd many limbed creature the info tag identified as a Spijox (uncommon) chittered at her and lunged at the candy she dropped in.

Ennéa recoiled at the sudden movement but quickly recovered and bent down to peer curiously into the cage and get a better look at the creature. "Whoa, neat!" She exclaimed. "It's like a.... freaky cross between a spider and a dog!" Ennéa tapped on the glass and the spider-dog chirped at her, clacking its mandibles.

It's just a Jox. Baraz said, sounding unimpressed. There's all kinds of those -- some are even *more* impressive. Like this one zombiejox that used to live under my bed. I was forever cleaning up tiny rotten bits and pieces it'd shed everywhere.

"Really?" Ennéa murmured. She wasn't sure what to think about that. A lot of these creatures were neat but it was kinda of like seeing snakes at the zoo. They were fun in a controlled environment but the idea of something like the Spijox skittering around free (and possibly under her bed) gave her the jibblies. The shadow under the bed that always tried to grab her ankles when she was little had been bad enough.

Ennéa continued on, happily passing out candy pieces and looking at all the weird creatures when Gale asked her a question. She blinked, pulled out her own little world of imagining what it would be like if she had her own stunted pony (the tiny stunted horseflies were adorable, after all). "Huh? How do I like Deus...?"

She shrugged ambivalently. "Uh, I don't know? It's okay, I guess?" Honestly, she wasn't sure how she felt after coming back from that last mission. "It's... not what I expected." She finally said. Of course, she wasn't sure just what she had expected, just... not this.

Ennéa shrugged again, feeling vaguely uncomfortable. "Um, how about you? Do you like Deus?"
PostPosted: Fri Nov 18, 2011 2:24 pm

He nearly dropped his handful of candy at Ennéa leaping back abruptly, but caught it just in time, fumbling with the multi-colored objects. Peering over at the other, he tried to see what she was looking at.

"A...what..?" Gale said, nonplussed, and walked over beside her, ducking down to look into the cage.

<< Oh, a Spijox. >>

"That is," said Gale. " - a really weird looking creature. It's kind of, er..."

There was a slight pause.

"Disturbing," he finally finished, then gave a small laugh, shaking his head as he straightened. "These Halloween guys certainly have an interesting mix of pets..."

Going back to his own row, Gale listened to Ennéa's hesitant, stumbling answer and wondered why he had asked her the question in the first place, since clearly she either didn't want to answer or didn't know how to answer. And, come to think of it, Gale didn't even know what he himself thought of Deus.

Which meant that he had just made things that much more awkward.

I don't know how to talk to girls! he fumed silently.

<< You seem to talk to Tika and Ariane just fine. >> said Jinhai lazily.

That's different. They're older than I am - they're like sisters. Ennéa's my own age.

<< Which is what again? Two? >>

Fifteen, stupid. Or maybe sixteen. I've lost track of time here.

<< I sometimes forget. >>

Hardee har har.

Sighing a bit internally, Gale forced a smile and said "Same here. Not...quite what I expected."

There was another long pause, in which a Chimera (Uncommon) peered dolefully up at him.

"Look, er..." said Gale, dropping all pretenses and shoving his hair away from his face. "I, er...am sorry. I'm not very good at..."

He moved his hand between the two of them, gesturing first at himself, then at Ennéa. " - this. The whole...talking thing. So I'm, er...sorry if it's awkward."

Ennéa watched nonplussed as Gale gestured between himself and her. "Talking thing?" She echoed, "But... we're talking just fine?" She looked at him, wondering if something was wrong. It was hard for her to pick up on this sort of thing. Back at home, everyone at school tended to shun her so she didn't have much experience socializing. But that was fine usually; she could keep herself entertained. It did make situations like this tricky though...

Oh! Ennéa drew in a breath as something occurred to her: one nice thing about Deus, she realized, was being able to talk to so many other people like her. No one thought she was creepy for staring at monsters in dark corners or skirting gutter grates to avoid grasping shadowy hands; they all could see what she did. They all understood what it was like.

But she was getting sidetracked. Ennéa refocused back on Gale and gave him a reassuring smile. "Don't worry about it!" She said breezily, before turning back to attend to a pair of pigmy dragons. "I'm just happy I don't have to do this all by myself." The dragons were eagerly sticking their snouts through the bars of their cage and breathing tiny plumes of flame. Ennéa gingerly fed them each a piece of candy and tried her best not to get her fingers singed in the process.

She continued on to the next cage where a Questing Beast (uncommon) placidly yawned at her and then got to its feet, moving to where she held out a piece of candy.

Ennéa was enjoying just marveling at all the weird creatures as she fed them but as the silence stretched on she realized it was also kind of novel to have someone to talk to and who wanted to talk to her. She looked back over at Gale as she moved on to her next cage. "Um, so..." She racked her brains trying to think of what to talk about. "tell me a little about yourself?" she asked.
PostPosted: Tue Nov 22, 2011 11:12 am

Gale was feeling stupider by the second. It was clear that Ennéa, though feeling awkward, had not really been feeling awkward about the same things he had - namely the fact that he seemed incapable of having normal conversation with girls his own age. Most of his classmates - in the short amount of time he'd spent with them - had always been talking of the opposite gender, but Gale had found it tedious and often a bit out of his league.

He offered Ennéa a rather weak smile. "Well, two hands make it faster than just one."

There was a long pause.

"I mean," he corrected himself, with a small laugh. "Four hands, technically."

From a cage nearby, a Dust Bunny (uncommon) tittered at him, tiny paws grasping at the bars of the cage. Gale poked a treat through towards it, and it made a happy chittering noise.

"Well, er...I'm fifteen," said Gale with a small shrug. "Or maybe I'm sixteen now, I'm not entirely certain, since I've lost track of the days here. I'm originally from London, and I have a twin sister named Leslie. She's..."

He trailed off uncertainly. "She's not...I mean...she hasn't awakened yet."

Thinking of his sister made him uncomfortable, so hastily he changed the subject.

"What about you? What's your story?"

"Oh!" Ennéa did a little gleeful hop. "I'm fifteen too!" She bounced a couple more times, making several Corrividus in a nearby cage quork and beat their wings loudly in protest at all of the commotion. Ennéa ignored them, continuing on enthusiastically, "I knew you were young but I thought you were still older than me -- I was beginning to think I was the youngest one here!" She beamed at Gale.

There was a long pause and in her head, Baraz sighed in exasperation at her.

Ennéa's smile slipped a bit when she belatedly realized that her gleeful reaction was perhaps a bit insensitive. "Erm, I mean. Sorry." She blushed. "About your sister, I mean." She scratched the back of her neck sheepishly. "Ugh, this came out all wrong, didn't it?" Ennéa said wryly. "Let's try this again."

"Okay, so, my story." Ennéa straightened and looked at Gale but then turned and grabbed another handful of candy instead. She tossed a piece to one of the fussing Corrividus who caught it in midair. Ennéa then fed the rest of the birds in similar fashion.

Finally though, after several long moments, she began talking. "I'm from Maryland, near Baltimore. My dad died when I was six, and that's..." Ennéa hesitated. "That's also around the first time I really remember seeing things, stuff no one else could see." Ennéa smiled and shrugged at Gale. "You know how it is, right?"

"Anyway, no one ever believed me but my brother -- er, he wasn't my twin brother or anything neat like that, he was just my older bro, but he... was the person most important to me. Our mom was always working so he practically raised me."

"And... yeah." Ennéa poked a candy into a cage labeled Nyan Cat (blueberry) and paused to stroke the tiny pastry cat as it leaned up against the cage's bars. "One day, I finally realized that even he didn't... um, he had just been humoring me, about the things I saw." Ennéa slowed in her stroking, causing the nyan cat to mew in protest. She gave it one last scritch and then moved on.

"So I ran away from home and became a hunter." She said quickly. "Silly, huh?"

Ennéa rushed on to the next cage, feeling stupid for having said anything. She hadn't intended on telling Gale all of that; it had just slipped out as she started talking. She hadn't even told Jordan or Maddie all of her story.

Maybe it was because she and Gale were the same age, she wasn't just the 'baby' of the group with him? Ennéa couldn't even say. The thought of her unresolved fight with Tobias ached terribly now that she wasn't fiercely ignoring it. Would she ever see her brother again? Ennéa blinked rapidly, determinedly ignoring her stinging eyes, as she tried to feed a piece of candy to a disinterested Drutten (uncommon).
PostPosted: Thu Nov 24, 2011 11:37 am

A small smile flickered on Gale's lips. So she was fifteen like he was. He'd already guessed as much, but hearing it just reassured him a bit more, since it no longer meant he was the "baby of the family." It even made him laugh a little.

"No," he replied, poking a treat through to a cage full of Fogdogs (uncommon) that looked nothing more than wisps of smoke. "No, not the youngest - though one of the youngest," Gale added, a wry smile on his face. "But it's nice to know that you're not alone, know what I mean?"

"And it's fine," he added, shaking his head. He juggled a handful of treats in one hand, and the pile of long, silky fur he'd assumed was nothing lifted its head and looked balefully at him through curtains of dark hair. "I mean, I miss her, but all things considered, maybe it's best that she's not awake yet."

Too much death. I don't want Leslie to see what I've seen.

There was a long pause while both of them fed treats to the various pets in silence, and Gale wondered whether or not Ennéa felt uncomfortable, since she'd stopped talking abruptly. But after a few moments she began again, her voice quiet. Gale's hand hesitated on one of the cages, fingers brushing against the cool metal.

"I'm sorry," he said, once she had finished, his voice gentle as he turned to look at her, absently turning over one of the treats in his hand. Behind him a cage labeled Invisible Dog (common) rattled ominously. "Really. I...I know how it feels."

Another small pause, and then Gale said softly "My parents didn't...well, believe me. Or anything. They're...they're good people," he added, after a thoughtful silence. "But they just...you know, didn't understand. They tried to push me into...special schools."

There was a heavy note of bitterness to Gale's voice as he pushed in a treat to a cage of Scareons - Fire (uncommon) a bit more forcefully than he intended. Talking about his parents made him irrationally irritated.

"I left home when I was twelve and moved in with my uncle in Leeds. I suppose it was my own fault, leaving my sister behind, but she didn't tell me or my parents that she had been seeing the same things I had been. So I left her behind, moved out, lied about my age, and got a job as a cashier in a grocers."

Like Ennéa, he hadn't exactly meant for all of it to come out, and once it had, he blinked, slightly taken aback. But then he thought she had talked to him so seriously, after all.

"I'm sorry," said Gale quietly, stepping over to look at Ennéa. "About your brother, I mean. I'm sorry that he wasn't taking you seriously."

Ennéa wiped at her eyes and gave Gale a watery smile before looking away again. "My mom sent me to a psychiatrist; I was 'too disconnected from the real world' or whatever that meant." She fiddled with a piece of candy, rolling it between her fingers. "I but I didn't care because I knew Tobias understood me..."

Ennéa's lower lip trembled and she hurriedly wiped at her eyes again. "Sorry." She mumbled. In her mind, Baraz's wings made a rustling sound but the ahriman didn't speak. Ennéa stood there for a couple long moments but at last she took a deep quavery breath and straightened her shoulders.

"Thanks." She said, looking at Gale. On impulse, she reached out and gave him a quick hug, like how she usually did with Jordan and Maddie and the rest of her Phoenix squad members. "Sorry things were so rough for you too." She said.

She stepped back and wiped her eyes once again with the cuff of her duty coveralls, wishing she had a tissue. The danger of her completely bursting into tears seemed to have mostly passed though. "Ugh. And sorry about all of this. It's been... well, 'hard' would be an understatement, wouldn't it?" She giggled slightly, a little bit of her usual spirit returning. "But at least everyone here understands; we all have our own personal damage." She twirled on one foot and raised her arm in a pose. "We can commiserate!"

Ennéa then turned and poked the piece of candy she had been fidgeting with into a cage marked Gremlin (common). The gremlin snatched the candy and made an odd tittering sound reminiscent of a hyena laugh. She moved on to the next cage. "And it's nice to understand, I guess," She continued over her shoulder, "to have names to all the strange shadows and creatures I used to see. I'm not just a helpless observer and victim anymore -- I can face my fears and laugh."

Ennéa paused a beat. "Er, not that I do that. I don't laugh when I fight."

"Anyway," Ennéa waved her hands to clear away her misstep. "Do you have any hobbies? What do you do for fun?" She asked, oblivious that the questions were a total topic jump and liable to cause cognitive whiplash.
PostPosted: Fri Dec 02, 2011 2:21 pm

She was tearing up.

Gale stared at her blankly. He had no idea how to deal with a watery-eyed girl that was older than him, let alone one his own age.

"Er," he said awkwardly, shifting from one foot to the other and trying to figure out just what to say or do that didn't sound insensitive or stupid. When nothing immediately came to mind, he reached out a hand to lay it gently on her shoulder. Opening his mouth, he was about to apologize again, but Ennéa had already grabbed him in a hug.

His mind went blank. Except before he could register what had just happened, she had already let go, wiping her eyes on the cuff of her sleeve, leaving Gale completely confused.

<< Haven't you ever been HUGGED before? >> Jinhai asked dryly.

No, thought Gale. Er. I mean. Not by anyone outside of my own family. And even then, Mum and Dad stopped after a while...

And so had Leslie.

His cheeks a faint red, Gale nodded to Ennéa, the hint of a small smile tugging on his lips as he absently twisted one of the FEAR candies between his hands, reaching one up to brush aside a few stray strands of hair that had fallen into his eyes again.

"No, don't apologize," he said quickly, taking a step forward. "I mean...you're right, aren't you? We're all here because we've got our own 'personal damage,' as you put it."

His smile was slightly dry with amusement. "It's like we're on the island of Misfit Toys."

Watching Ennéa feed the Gremlin, Gale had almost forgotten that they were here for a reason other than spilling their life stories, apparently. He turned aside and pushed a piece of candy into a cage without really looking at it, and then said "Well, um...you have people to face those fears with you, don't you? I mean," he added hastily, stumbling over his words. "Aren't you one of the Phoenixes? You guys seem pretty close knit."

A small part of him was envious of that connection, but Gale hid that envy away, pushing back into his chest as he blinked at the sudden change in topic.

"Er," he said. "Well, I...I've always enjoyed sports. I'm a football fan myself - er, and by that I mean, our kind of football, what Americans would call 'soccer,' I think. And I enjoy...working...and good food and the cinema..."

There was a slight pause.

"Er, sorry, I'm afraid my hobbies are all a little...dull," he mumbled, embarrassed. The he rapidly tried to turn the conversation away from him by asking Ennéa the same question she had asked him. "What about you? What do you do for fun?"
