It was late, wasn't it? Or early; somewhere between the two, and Amarus was humming to herself and walking outside, possibly towards her dorm, possibly nowhere at all. There was so much to look at, she had taken not exactly to getting lost, but to exploring the places she did not recognize. All she knew was that the Ghost dormitories were fairly devoid of excitement, as nice as they might be, and it felt better to be outside.

She walked not on the ground, but a few inches above it, hovering. Nevertheless, she moved as though her feet touched some invisible surface. She had her long, bound hair coiled around one arm, as she tended to do, and Jin was perched on one shoulder, to keep her company. Every time it heard, or thought it heard a sound, its head would snap in the direction of the offending noise, as if he was her guard-dog.

Amarus glowed in the steadily increasing light, a pink and flickering light, as though she was on fire. Lately, and in fact ever since she had been woken from the painting, she had been extremely preoccupied with the idea of a soul. However, the only reaper she had met had been immediately engaged in combat by none other than Amarus herself, and so they had not really discussed the issue. That was the thought at the front of her mind.

Until this time, both Jin and herself heard something approaching. Amarus dropped her hair and stiffened, flattening against the nearest large-ish object and going as transparent as her first-year form would allow.

"Do you think we have company, Jin?" she asked her wyvling, loud enough for anyone nearby to have heard.

Fortunately for Amarus, Mortimer was quite distracted. As it was, he was trying to track down his scareon Watt, who had somehow managed to get out of his room. How, Mort wasn't sure. Maybe he had accidentally left the door open or unlocked; Watt was smart like that, and when bored well . . .

"Waaaaaaaatt!" Mortimer called out with an exasperated sigh. "Waaaaaaaatt! I has the treasies if you comes out!"

The zombie had been at it for about half an hour now, and he was doggedly going to continue at it until either he woke up the whole academy or until someone stopped him. That scareon was precious to him, Mama's first gift when he had first appeared in Halloween Town . . . He couldn't lose him so quickly in the school year!

For now, Mort paused in the middle of the hallway and pushed his glasses up, sighing again. "Mort, why you so dumb . . ." While he was at it, where was he? o3o; And had he been hearing things?

"Hello . . . ?"

It turned out Amarus didn't need to worry. The boil was yelling something about... Amarus snickered to herself, revealing her location even more than she potentially had before. When he finally paused, and seemed to realize someone might be there, she stepped out and restored her visiblity. "Anyone who uses the word 'treatsies' can't be that bad. Are you looking for... Watt?" She tried to extract the name of what it was he looked for, even though he kept lengthening the syllables. She picked Jin up and held him in her arms, looking at the boil.

"I can help you look, if you lost something. I'm not really doing anything worthwhile. Just... thinking. Souls, being dead, you know. The usual," Amarus shrugged, her bells jingling. She raised her chin as she regarded the boil. Then, remembering what manners were and why she was supposed to have them, she added, "I'm Amarus. And I probably won't eat you alive-- well, I definitely won't eat you alive." Amarus... was attempting a joke? That couldn't go well. She let Jin down onto the floor, where he coiled up underneath her feet, which were currently levitating a couple inches off the ground.

Mort blinked as something - someone - phased into view. Once again, he was reminded of the perks of being anything other than a zombie which, proud as he was for being one, did have its drawbacks. Like no natural form. Or tails. Or super breath powers. Or flight. Now invisibility was just another addition to the list. ;A;

Still! "Hiya! Is Mortimer, but can call Mort," Mortimer greeted her cheerily enough, watching her wyvling curl beneath her feet. Perhaps it was the overdosage of fire from the field trip, but he had to restrain a wince at the sight of the minipet's glowing eyes and fiery coloration where he normally would not have had to. But it was just a pet, he told himself, nothing to worry about. Certainly not anything like the size of the Red-Beast.

Speaking of pets . . .

"Yes, looking for Watt. Lil' scareon, yellow n' white n' stitchy," he explained to . . . Amarus, she said? That sounded like a cool name. o3o Her hair color and bells also reminded him of LW, though she had red hair and . . . didn't float.

It finally clicked that this ghoul was a ghost when she mentioned thinking about being dead and souls, which made the zombie blink again. "You think usual on that? But if we be dead, no need to think," Mort replied simply. "And if we talk and move, we has souls, right? Soul not need heart or blood to work."

Or at least, that was his opinion.

"But, um . . . please to not eat me? Must has to find Watt afore he gets in trouble." It never would have struck him that she could eat him, which made him wonder what kind of ghost this Amarus was.

Amarus would actually love to have a physical body, again-- well, she assumed she would. That was, after all, why she tended to walk like she was still alive, even though her feet never touched the ground. It was also why she was as tangible as possible whenever she spoke to anyone.

The idea of Jin harming anyone, had Mort shared it with her, would have made her smile: Jin hardly did anything, other than follow her around. In fact, that was usually the eerie part about Jin; he did nothing but stare. Which he was doing now, to Mort, staring up at him. Jin's tail flicked back and forth, scraping along the ground.

"Nice to meet you, Mort," she replied. Her skin flickered still with her Lotus Smoke aura, and she seemed to be utterly calm, to the point where it may as well be that she had no emotions at all. Mort appeared quite animated, for someone who was supposed to have been dead at some point-- and kind of still was. "A little scareon? Hmmm. Didn't see him. Why don't we look while we talk? I'll keep you company, and, well, I provide quite a bit of light." Although it wasn't very pure light, she did illuminate a small area around her by way of her aura.

She leaned down and collected Jin from the floor, holding him in her arms like a scaly cat. Mort had a very unique speech pattern; Amarus hadn't met any other zombies, so she wondered if that was a facet of Mort's personality, or a trait in common. "Is that all souls are, Mort? Do you think? Talking and moving? I feel like there has to be... more to that."

Amarus started to walk forward, stepping on air, pausing at a door and waiting for Mort to pick a direction. "Of course I won't eat you, Mort; I don't really feel like that would be worth it." Her deadpan expression, and eerie silver eyes made it seem like she was sincere. She was entirely joking; she couldn't do that even if she wanted to. Her type was just that of a Lotus Eater.

"Thanku! Is nice f-for companies. N' light. N' not eating." ^^

He wondered why this ghoul was interested in souls of all things. Maybe it was the atmosphere, what with the somber mood, the recovering, the re-bonding with those left behind or loved ones, the rumors of a true funeral, the lies being spread by the Boogiemen to cover up the mess. In that perspective, he supposed something metaphysical like souls could be brought up.

But this was Mort. Mort could barely spell metaphysical, let alone grasp what having a soul meant.

It probably didn't help that, being near her, the zombie was slowly beginning to feel the effects of the lotus eater's aura. For now though, Mort scratched his head thoughtfully as he began to lead their search onward through the hall - or rather, follow the ghoul. "Mrrr . . . Well body does talking n' moving. Soul kinda . . . is there? Is like . . . Battery! Like battery." It was almost inevitable that Mortimer would equate things to technology. "N' body is like, um, robot. Robot need battery for work. Make sense?"

It was difficult for Amarus to adjust to Mort's way of speaking. It was... strangely cute? She drummed her fingertips against her hip, resting her palm against her sash, and thought less about souls and more about what made Mort talk that way. Would others speak strangely as well? She was still relatively new to the academy, and she didn't exactly know about the different types of students yet. It wasn't any of what Mort was thinking that made Amarus consider a soul. It was rather that even before she had a somewhat tangible form, when FEAR gathered to create her, she perceived a figure... Amarus thought about her, for a moment, and felt something distant that she thought could be love, or admiration. But she couldn't tell. Regardless, soul had been important then, and it was important to her even still.

Amarus was usually a ghoul of action, not so much contemplation, so she wasn't entirely sure what to do about this wanting-to-feel-things or what-is-soul?

Finally, she thought she realized what Mort had been saying, and answered: "Yeah, it's nice to have company sometimes, right?"

Unlike Mort, Amarus didn't really understand technology. She was rather primitive, probably due to her origins, and although she would like to understand what he was talking about, she didn't, not really. "Explain this... 'robot' to me," she asked, though it sounded a lot like a statement. Amarus was perplexed.

This ghoul didn't . . . she hadn't heard of . . . What.

Mortimer gave her a blank look as he tried to process, to conceive the very thought that someone had never heard of a robot. A robot!

DDDDD8 "H-How . . . Wah?" He pushed his glasses up, breaking his stare with a few blinks. "S-Sorry, just . . . not used to 'splaining." Ahem. "Robots be, um . . . Build from stuff like metal, make into whatever shape w-want: robot dog, robot cat, robot human. Can has commands put in o-or can has controller. Some has emotions, some don't."

It was far too simple of a definition, but Mort had some issues trying to exactly define what a robot was without whipping out the dictionary.

She didn't even have an eyePhone, an eyePod, or even a catalarm: Amarus and technology did not go hand in hand. Her room was furnished strangely, though rather empty due to having not had enough time or funds to collect trinkets, and so she really didn't know much about electronic devices.

As a result, Amarus was trying to understand Mort, but it would take her a while. As he gave her a blank look, she was returning one in equal measure, oblivious as to why that was strange. She was stuck in a painting for jack knows how long, so naturally she hadn't had a whole lot of interaction with technology.

"Metal... shape... commands?" Amarus repeated key words, her eyes cast upwards, as she tried to envision such a thing. In the end, she simply pictured Ashbel, her foxfire, covered in metal places. "...like armour? No, wait, you said built from... I think I understand?"

She probably didn't. Ashbel in armour had been the chosen image to explain "robots" now, so that would have to stay until she saw a real one. Her interest was piqued when he mentioned emotions, though. "Some don't have emotions? At all, or do they have them and they just don't know?" Amarus wasn't really talking about robots, in terms of... well, it was an issue she contemplated often. She didn't know if she was capable of emotions.

"And so... robots need battery to run like we need souls?" she finished, still absolutely no closer to understanding than she had been in the first place.

"Mrrrr . . . Depends," Mort replied, quite sheepish that his irregular speech was not helping bridge the gap of understanding completely. "Is big debate if 'motions can make or not. Some m-mad science-ists say yes, no say o-other. N' other say can make but is not same as real. Like when acting, o-or lying." Agh, he was going to confuse himself at this rate!

Mort sighed and pushed his glasses up with a finger. "S-Sorry, brain makes bad talking. Has better 'zample of r-robot n' room. After find Watt?" he proposed, remembering belatedly that they were supposed to be looking for the darn scareon. "Was thinkin' - " - shock - "- m-maybe near big electrical place? Likes . . . chewing w-wire." >>; "Is b-bad owner, knows . . ."

It was a fascinating topic. Amarus wasn't particularly bothered by his way of speaking, and it was more that she was really stupid when it came to technology than an actually failing on his part. "Acting, or lying? Ah...I see." Amarus' face seemed to fall. She quickly relaxed her face, hiding the trace of disappointment. Was that all she felt, too? If emotions were so hard for her to understand, was it true that the ones she did manage to feel were just lies, or acting, because she knew that's how she should behave? Amarus tried to set the thoughts aside, but they weighed on her pretty heavily.

"Sure, we can do that. Hey, I understand you fine," she reassured Mort, honestly. There was an awkward pause while Amarus considered a scareon chewing wires. Wasn't that... bad? She didn't have that problem with her pets, thankfully, as she had few devices which required wire in the first place. "Lead the way to the first place he might be? With... wires..." she added, looking a little confused.

He pondered for a moment. "Mrrr . . . Think be n' computer lab," Mort said after a while, gesturing for her to follow as he turned a few corners. At least, he figured this was the route . . . Yes, this was familiar. He could hear the hum of several PreCs coming from behind a door to their left, along with what sounded like sparking. "Nononononono -"

He opened the door with a gulp.

There the lightning scareon was indeed, though the situation was not as bad as Mortimer had previously thought. His minipet was currently rolled within the wires of several computers, sparking apparently with pleasure as opposed to, well, mindless destruction. He looked to the two with curious red eyes, paws wrapped around a couple of wires.

"Watt!" Mort cried, stepping in and squatting so he could better see the scareon. "Was looking for."

Watt made a noise, but no movement to get out. He quite liked having all this pulsing electricity nearby. In fact, it looked quite delicious the more he stared . . .

"Mrrrrrr." He ran a hand through his hair and sighed. "Can be p-possessive, but is very bad time . . . Ideas?"

Jacking son of a-- the scareon was nestled within a bunch of sparking wires. While Amarus knew she had a ghostly sort of resistance to water and fire, she hadn't ever tested electricity. And she wasn't about to risk killing the little scareon.

But she had a thought. "Well... I don't know much about computers... but I do know that uh..." she sort of trailed off, and tried to sneak her way around the computers. To where she thought she saw the power source. And basically, she pulled the plug, or the equivalent thereof, cutting off the power.

That ... would ideally make the wires safe, wouldn't it? And then they could just grab Watt and maybe buy Mort a leash for him or something. Looks like searching for the scareon meant that they'd have to seriously talk about stuff another time. Still, at least Amarus had some kind of better idea about robots. Or souls, or... really, what did she learn? Amarus tried not to sigh at herself in exasperation, out of fear Mort would hear it and think it was directed towards him.

All in all, she liked his company; it wasn't a bad day.

[[OOC: Let me know when you feel like we can wrap this up? ; u; <3 We didn't quite get the news thing done, but xD; at least we tried, haha... ahhh. *stupid*]]
