The guy he'd been before Deus Ex wouldn't have recognized him now, Jordan reflected as he headed towards the portals that led to the training courses. Sure, he'd done some running and other exercise, but he'd been in all of one fight throughout his school career, and that one had ended without injury to anyone due to a teacher's timely intervention, and he'd been pretty much grateful for that. Now he was on his way to the Sun training course, intending to crush as many tiny monsters as possible on his way through, and feeling a distinct if quiet satisfaction at the thought of taking out his stresses through overt physical violence.
Humans are weird, Ferros commented. Your schools don't teach battle?
Oh yes, and there was the whole telepathically bonded sentient weapon thing, which, while it had its drawbacks from time to time, he could no longer imagine life without. I don't really think football counts. Maybe in schools with rugby teams. Or wrestling. But it's all strictly regulated stuff.
Weird, Ferros repeated. Are we almost there? I'm hungry.
"You're always hungry," Jordan said, and summoned his weapon, swinging the hammer up to rest across his shoulder as he walked. "Just give me a minute, I did my run this morning."

Gale was, in fact, bored.
This was probably not a good thing, especially since the last time he'd been bored he had decided to go through one of Caelius' delightful "training" exercises and wound up getting his foot stuck in a beehive.
It had been somewhat less than pleasant.
Now Gale was wandering the halls idly swinging the rifle back and forth like a pendulum. He supposed it wasn't entirely smart to have summoned his weapon while just meandering through Deus Ex, but it gave him something to do with his hands, at least.
<< Where are we going anyway? >> Jinhai asked, sounding extraordinarily bored. << I find today has been quite dull. >>
"I was thinking we'd try another exercise," said Gale, and when Jinhai made a sound somewhat like a derisive snort, Gale added irritatedly "Shut up. I just want to - oof."
He hadn't been paying attention as he was rounding the corner, running into something very solid and bouncing back abruptly. Rubbing his nose, Gale glanced upwards.
"Oh," he said, slightly taken aback. "It's..."
The name escaped him. Jackson? Jeremy? No, Jordan, that was it. Jordan, who Gale had never really spoken to before.
"Er," he said. "Good afternoon. "

Someone came around the corner at just precisely the wrong moment, stepping out directly into Jordan's path; it was too late to stop in time, and Jordan crashed straight into the smaller figure, bouncing back with a soft huff of breath. "Sorry," he said automatically, focusing on the person. Smallish, blond, carrying a rifle almost as tall as he was. Jordan smiled a little sheepishly. "Gale, right?"
He readjusted his hold on Ferros, who was grumbling quietly about being knocked about and people who couldn't look where they were going. Whether he meant Jordan, Gale, or both was unclear. It's called an accident, Ferros. It happens.
I'm huuuuungry, the dragon whined.
Jordan grimaced, then realized that that could easily be misinterpreted. "Ferros is bitching about being hungry," he explained. Gale had summoned his weapon; perhaps the boy was on his way to the training courses as well. "We're about to go squish some shadowlings. You going to the courses too?" he asked.

"Ah," said Gale, slightly awkwardly. "Yes, that's right. Gale. And you're Jordan, are you?"
It was not technically a question, since he knew what the older hunter's name was, but it was still polite to inquire anyway. Vaguely he wondered what sort of creature Jordan's weapon was - the giant hammer was quite impressive, after all, and Gale couldn't help but admire it (Jinhai was grumbling in his ear) - but he shook his head as though to clear it and looked up at the other.
"Ah," he said, and glanced down at the rifle with a mildly exasperated expression. "Jinhai is rather, er...grumpy as well - "
<< I am NOT grumpy - >>
" - but I just ignore him."
<< How dare - >>
"Anyway," Gale continued, clamping a hand down on the barrel of the rifle as if that would make the dragon shut up (a fruitless attempt, at course), and glanced back at Jordan.
"Er, yes," he answered, idly rubbing the back of his neck. "I was planning on sort of...blowing off some steam, after all."

Jordan nodded. "Right," he said. It wasn't like there were that many new trainees on the island, but he didn't really expect anyone to remember his name, apart from his own team, of course. He hadn't exactly been particularly social, after all. He was vaguely flattered that Gale remembered.
"It sucks when they're grumpy," he said sympathetically. He'd spent the past few days enduring Ferros's irritable needling and jealous behavior; the weapon's temper was still on a hair-trigger, and Jordan had quietly resolved to do his damndest never to touch anyone else's weapon again, no matter how compelling the reason, if Ferros was going to act like this afterwards. "You can't exactly get away from it."
Hey.
You've been being an a**, Jordan pointed out.
Can't get away from me, Ferros shot back.
Ignoring him sounded like a really good idea right now. "Yeah, me too," Jordan agreed. "What course are you doing?" Probably a stupid question, but hey, he could at least be friendly, right?

"I think Jinhai was made grumpy," snorted Gale, even as the rifle made an indignant sound, clearly affronted by this very direct statement. "He was formerly a dragon, and I'm pretty sure he's just hot blooded in general."
<< I swear, if I could, I would strangle you. >> grumbled the weapon, outraged, and Gale smirked.
Exactly why you're not a dragon now.
Waving a hand at the rifle, Gale idly spun it around in his hands, giving Jordan a mildly curious look. He didn't really know the other at all, but he seemed pleasant enough.
At the very least he hadn't called him kid yet.
"Ah," he said, tapping his fingers on the barrel of the rifle now. "I wasn't quite sure. I've tried out the one I heard referred to as 'Deathsweeper,' but, er, it didn't go so well. I was thinking I'd either try it out again and see if it went better this time, but other than that..." Gale shrugged. "I had no real plans in mind."

Jordan laughed. "Ferros is usually pretty laid-back, but I pissed him off a few days back and he still hasn't forgiven me." He gave the rifle - Jinhai - an interested glance. "He's a dragon too? What kind? Ferros was an iron dragon - mechanical, I think. At least, that's the impression I get."
The finest kind of dragon, Ferros said haughtily. None of your organic silliness. I am entirely metal. Powerful and beautiful.
"And egotistical," Jordan said, and grinned at the outraged huff he got for the comment.
"I was going to the Shadow Run," he offered. "Plenty of tiny monsters to smash." He hesitated briefly; Gale's rifle wasn't exactly a melee weapon, and he wasn't sure how well Jinhai would do against hordes of shadowlings, but they were all expected to handle any kind of challenge, weren't they? "Want to come with?" he offered. "Or, well - I haven't tried the Deathsweeper, but I guess I should try all the courses."

"Ginny here just has the extraordinarily good fortune of having an outrageously good memory," said Gale, heavy sarcasm in his voice as he gave the rifle a pointed glance. "Which means he never lets anything go."
A pause.
"Ever."
<< You make me sound like a two year old. >>
Well, if the barrel fits...
Gale's eyebrows rose a little. "Too?" he repeated, then looked at the hammer curiously. "I didn't realize there were so many dragon types here. I'm pretty sure Bix's bow and arrows are from a dragon as well. Ginny here - "
<< JINHAI. >>
" - er, I mean, Jinhai is something called a fucanlong. Er, or something like that." Gale waved a noncommittal hand. "Not quite certain what that means, though."
"Want to come with?"
Now Gale's brows rose so high they were in danger of reaching his hairline. He had not expected for the other to actually invite him along, but now that he had mentioned it...
Gale shrugged. "Sure. I'm game for anything at this point."

"Well, there are dragon legends in every culture," Jordan said thoughtfully. "I suppose they had to have come from somewhere. Makes a certain amount of sense that there'd be many types. Jinhai sounds - Chinese?" he guessed. "I know that long is the Chinese word for dragon. Might be something about it in the library."
Did you know that "long" is the Chinese word for "full of themselves?"
I'm not repeating that, Ferros. Jordan managed not to roll his eyes at his weapon's snickering.
"Good to have some company," Jordan said, and started off towards the courses again. "Of course, now I'll have to be sure not to fail." He grinned sideways at Gale.

Brushing his bangs back away from his face, Gale glanced at the enormous hammer in Jordan's hands, then at his own sniper rifle. Strange to think that too wholly different weapons had the same sort of souls - or rather, similar souls, since Jordan had said something about his weapon being a mechanical dragon of sorts, whereas Jinhai was most likely one of those Chinese dragons.
<< A REAL dragon. >>
Please don't tell me you're actually comparing yourself.
<< I was NOT >> said Jinhai, outraged. << COMPARING mys - >>
"Well, unfortunately, you can never tell with anything here," said Gale with a snort as he fell into step beside the other, the rifle resting against his shoulder. He studiously ignored the rifle's squawking, instead focusing on the guy next to him. "I mean, our leaders are people like Doctor H, Clarice, and Caelius. I'd be surprised if we didn't walk out of training looking like we were just sent through a blender."

"You raise a very valid point. I get the distinct feeling that the hazing doesn't end until we're fully qualified. Probably not then, either." Jordan shrugged the shoulder that didn't have a large hammer resting across it. "It must be one of the recreation options. Go to the gym, read a book, or torment the latest trainees."
The portals for the courses loomed out of the mist at the edge of the training grounds. Jordan paused, glancing sideways at Gale. ... No, he wasn't going to ask if Gale was sure he wanted to do this. Younger or not, the guy had gone through the same ordeals, been chosen by a weapon, and survived the hellish mission that had been the haunted house; he deserved the respect of being assumed competent, as least as much as Jordan was. Instead, he asked, "Ready?"

"I have a feeling the hazing will never end," replied Gale, with a deliberately deadpan voice. He shook his head, giving an exasperated sigh. "It certainly must be, considering all we've been through."
Though Gale had no clue as to what was going on in Jordan's mind, the fact that the older hunter was treating him as an equal, rather than a subordinate or a kid did not escape his notice, and Gale appreciated it quite a bit - even if he didn't say anything. Giving a nod, he tapped a finger on the rifle in his hands.
"Ready."

Course Info Sun Hunter SHADOW RUNGeneral Information The Shadow Run is both the simplest and most dangerous training course that can be run without a golem. A flurry of continuous attacks is what the Sun Division holds in highest respect, and the course reflects that. The course itself is a simple tunnel, reached via portal. Within the tunnel await hundreds of weak, hungry shadowlings. Nothing to worry about on their own, but capable of overwhelming a Hunter through sheer numbers at the first moment of weakness. At the other end of the tunnel is another portal, leading back to the course observation booth.
If you fail: your character is KO'd, but there's always a senior hunter in the observation booth with enhanced bandages at the ready. They should reach you in time. Really. Trained and trusty professionals on-hand 24/7.
If you win: peen points and bragging rights to those who take out the greatest number of shadowlings and go the most turns without needing to attempt a recovery maneuver.
Mechanics You must get through 5 waves of attacks to make it through the tunnel. Simply roll for attack as you would in battle. If you miss, your character falters in their attacking and is overwhelmed by shadowlings. After 3 successful hits, you may use your weapon's charge attack.
Bonus Mechanics This bonus is consumable. The bonus in this course is in the form of "recoveries" ~ these are would-be missed attacks that are quickly recovered and turned into a successful hit. Basically, they can miss once and roll again for an extra try. If you keep consecutively missing, though, and run out of recoveries, it's lights out. These do not equal an automatic pass for a round, you still have to land a successful hit to proceed.

Jordan stepped through the portal first, nodding respectfully to the senior Hunter on duty in the observation booth, who seemed to be at least half asleep. Let's not interrupt his nap, Jordan said, amused. Got it, Ferros snickered. Jordan waited long enough for Gale to step through into the booth, then grinned confidently and said, "Here goes." The tunnel on the other side of the entry portal was dark, stuffy, and stank of something acrid and unpleasant. Jordan had only a moment to observe that, though; the walls began suddenly to undulate with motion, and hundreds of pairs of tiny eyes blinked open at once. The tunnel came alive with chittering sound as shadowlings flowed down and into his path. Let's do this. He started forward at a jog, bringing Ferros around in a wide sweep; many of the shadowlings skittered out of the way, shrieking, but there were a few satisfying crunches as Ferros smashed through the mob. More importantly, the swing had cleared their way forward towards the portal at the other end of the tunnel. Status Wave: 1Attack Dmg: 4 Total Shadowlings taken out: 4 Recoveries left:1
