Her second contest had come to a close, another wonderful success. She'd met many new knights and senshi, had seen more powers and strategies. It had been a great learning experience for her even from her seat as referee.

And then what had happened a few days later... well she was still trying to swallow all of that and all the implications it would have.

The two together had Eternal Sailor Polaris on cloud nine as she set out on an evening patrol. Unlike the night before she did not plan to go out as a princess, leaving it instead as something she'd pull forth only if she ran into something that she didn't think she could handle.

She was just getting back into the groove of things as best she could.. trying to grasp at a 'normalcy' that would probably take a while to ever fully regain. The night air was crisp as she hopped from rooftop to rooftop. What would she find today..? Enemy? Ally?

That was one of those great and exciting mysterious of the nightly senshi patrol.

Athene was once again out on patrol, for once the take-away cup of coffee abandoned in favour of a take-away cup of hot chocolate. Nothing fancy – given how much of take-away hot drinks Athene had ended up abandoning the dark-haired senshi had decided to settle for just the hot chocolate with a bit of nutmeg, instead of the whipped cream and chocolate sprinkle bonanza he favoured. It was however rich and most importantly a good way of keeping his hands warm – at least while the contents lasted.

As he walked Athene hoped that for once the patrol beat would be quiet – not like the last two which had been rather eventful to say the least.

Quiet nights were nice sometimes. It gave a person some time to just think on things... it was sort of restful too, to be able to just go through the motions without exerting too much energy. It could however get a little lonely. For as much as she toted the need to patrol in groups and pairs, Polaris often found herself alone.

The sensation of another senshi somewhere nearby caught her attention perhaps for that very reason of loneliness. And after a moment she began to try and pursue it. It was something that took a bit of trial and error, but before too long she felt the telltale sign that she was at least getting closer and headed in the right direction.

She wasn't trying to be particularly sneaky, her thick boots making low thuds on the pavement, peering around corners before leaving the safety of alleyways.

It was almost like an easter egg hunt or a game of hide and seek. Finding youma or bad guys was easier, they tended to make a lot of noise and ruckus that helped pin down a location. But Polaris didn't seem particularly unhappy about the hunt, as seen by the soft grin on her tanned face, or the carefree way she batted back loose strands of hair as they tried to engulf her shoulders.

Athene was about half-way through the cup of hot chocolate when he picked up on the other aura . For once it didn't have a feel of the auras that the dark-haired senshi had come to associate with a youma – nor did it feel like a Knight's aura, Camelot's being the one that Athene was most familiar with considering that he'd chanced across the Squire of Earth on a few of his patrols.

Actually to be honest it felt like that of another senshi and a strong one at that. For a moment a glimmer of curiosity flicked across the dark-haired senshi's face – Athene hadn't really come across any of his fellow senshi when out on patrol.

It was part curiosity and part a lack of opposition to company that had Athene turn and re-trace his footsteps some in the direction he thought the aura might be coming from. The dark-haired senshi wasn't sure what, if any, protocol there was around patrolling but it would be nice to speak to a fellow senshi – that is if said senshi didn't mind a spot of company.

Aura's were not a perfect science. It narrowed things down but there were still many alleys and nooks and crannies for people to hide within. And when you threw in the fact that some traveled by roof and others by street it sometimes made the task incredibly frusterating. So it was nice for once to not have to chase down an aura that seemed to be running off.

It didn't take long at all for Polaris to find Athene or vice versa. And thought she wasn't an absolute pro at recalling names and faces the name and identity of this particular menshi was quick to her mind. He had participated in her contest AND he'd been part of that round that had been stopped midrun for over the top aggressiveness.

An ivory gloved hand waved, calling out cheerfully to alert him in case he somehow hadn't noticed her. "Well hello there! Small city huh?"

It seemed he had re-traced his footsteps in the right direction, as it didn't take too lond for the dark-haired senshi to find the source of the aura. Another senshi, one of a much higher rank than him. The face was familiar though – Athene had participated in her Duels of Destiny contest not that long ago.

“I guess it is a bit ” his voice was friendly as he agreed with the other senshi's statement. “Evening to you as well Sailor Polaris.” Athene han't forgotten the senshi who had stopped the green-haired senshi who'd been his opponent from wiping the floor with him during his first round of the tournament. “Are you out patrolling?” He wondered if she would mind some company if it turned out that she was out patrolling like he was.

"Sometimes it seems so hopelessly large, and then little things like this happen." She agreed with a whistful musing, brushing back a few stray strands of her wild hair.

"But I am patrolling, yes. A senshi's work is never done." There was a soft playfulness in her tone despite the truth of it. She'd been at it long enough that it was almost routine for her, and when things began to drag or get heavy... well something would happen. Like the success of her gladiator games recently. Or that other thing that had happened just a few days afterward.. It recharged her batteries, her optimism. And a little optimism made it much easier to go out on cold nights.

"Would you like company?" Her voice seemed to perk a little with the question, that small spark of excitement evident. Polaris had always been the sort that enjoyed the prospect of having a partner in crime. Even if the other party didn't particularly want her around. He'd say yes though wouldn't he?

“Company would be nice if you’re not too busy.” It almost as if Polaris had been reading his thoughts.

Athene took another sip of his hot chocolate. Most, actually make that almost all of his patrols had been of the solo variety and although on occasion the dark-haired senshi had run into a knight or two – it had usually been while a youma or two had been about – very different to patrolling with someone from the start.

”Thank you for the offer,” he gave the taller senshi a smile before admitting quietly. “Patrolling alone can be kind of lonely sometimes.”

It seemed quiet tonight – not that the dark-haired senshi was complaining. Quiet was good, at least he’d like to think it was.

"Never too busy for a friendly face." She insisted almost immediately, and it was pretty obvious from her expression that it was sincere. It was probably Aurora's lack of social life that made Polaris so open to a social senshi life. But then again, one could argue that it was good strategy to have as many allies and as much information as possible.

Pausing a moment, she glanced over her shoulder, searching for some sign of anything around them, but she found none, finally giving a soft shrug of her shoulders. "I can't actually feel anything nearby. So it doesn't matter which way we go. Do you have a preference?"

The lack of dangerous vibes in the immediate area and the hot chocolate being held by Athene seemed to give an aura of calm and comfort, leading Polaris to speak freely, musing curiously. "If I recall correctly from the contest.. You're the senshi of beads right?"

It was an interesting sphere, one that she could imagine both powerful and terrible powers for. "Do you mind if I ask what exactly your powers do?"

“To be honest not really,” Athene admitted. “I patrolled by the park last time, but was thinking of patrolling by the streets around the library this time round.” The dark-haired senshi had run across a youma there once with Camelot. “I don't really have a fixed patrol route.”

At Polaris' query he shook his head “You're correct. I am the senshi of beads, if I remember right you're the Eternal Senshi of Magnetism yourself.” Contest aside Sailor Polaris was the few Eternal senshi he'd seen, although he thought he recalled seeing a few at the contest. “And no I don't mind you asking – my um senshi ability kind of traps things for a little bit in beads – when it works that is.” The fact that his senshi ability seemed to have a mind of its own was a sore point for Athene.

"Same here" She chimed in swaying a finger in soft amusement as she did. Two of a kind they were. "A lot of senshi and knights seem to patrol the same places over and over, so I always thought it might be best for me to hop around. You know, just in case there is some area out there that doesn't have someone regularly patrolling it."

"Not to mention you run into a large variety of people. But I'm sure you know that."

The power was filed away in her mind as he explained it, nodding in what seemed like soft approval. Despite not being offensive it seemed like a pretty good power to her. Trapping someone could let you get close enough to hit them without them fighting back. Or it could allow an ally a clearer shot. It could even be used to allow for a retreat if you ended up in trouble. It certainly sounded useful atleast. Her attention was drawn back though with the added caveat, offering a knowing smile.

"It's really a pain when powers don't behave isn't it? Even my powers, which I think are pretty good, sometimes misbehave."

"Nothing like getting smacked in the back of the head with a can, or scrapped up with screws."

"Or the collateral damage... ughh." She grimaced a little at the thought. Making the mess of a street, destroying trash cans, and denting cars always made her feel guilty. And then of course there was that other thing... she still hadn't paid back enough to quall her own guilt in that building fire.

Athene nodded “I guess that makes sense” the dark-haired senshi hadn’t really thought about it that way. “I guess some people patrol the same areas because they’re attached to the areas they patrol, although variety can be nice too.”

The dark-haired senshi had kept walking while he was talking, letting his feet pick out a route. “Although I don’t usually come across other senshi on patrol, I’ve met a couple of knights that way though.” Mostly Camelot, he’d only met Valhalla once. A rueful smile crossed his face at the thought – most of his meetings with the older squire had involved tangles of the youma variety.

He blinked startled as Polaris shared some of her experiences of having her powers misbehave. “That sounds painful. My senshi ability just decides to kind of” Athene tried to think of a word “Um fizzle out without doing anything when it’s being temperamental.”

The dark-haired senshi drank some more of his hot chocolate, noting ruefully that it was the most he’d managed to drink in a while. The past few occasions had led to him having to abandon the contents to check out what had turned into an encounter with some of the many youma that seemed to roam Destiny City. Not that he was complaining about the quiet mind – quiet was good.

"I've met more senshi than knights, but I have ran into a handful of knights too." She'd seen plenty of them when there were large gatherings, like her time in the surrounding or the christmas donation drive. But patrolling it was usually just senshi. Well.. senshi plus Niflhel and Camelot.

She gave a bit of a sheepish shrug as he reacted to her explaination. It was a little embarassing but he hadn't been unkind about it. And heck, in a way they were kindred spirits in their similiar struggle. "Well that's a pain if it doesn't work at all. And a little dangerous too depending on the situation."

"It might be a good idea to patrol in a pair or group." She wasn't really one to talk, almost always heading off along herself. But it seemed a helpful enough suggestion. "Do you have a team?" The last few people she'd asked to join her team had already belonged to one. Who knew how many teams there actually were out there now that she didn't know about.

Polaris wasn’t the first to mention the potential dangerousness of patrolling with only an unpredictable senshi ability to fall back on, but she had been nicer about it than the last to comment on it. At the eternal senshi’s question about a team Athene shook his head, his voice quiet as he admitted “No I don’t have a team.”

It wasn’t because the bead senshi was the loner type – Athene was the sort to turn down an offer of help out of hand and some of his youma encounters had involved temporary ‘team ups’. No it was simply that the question of a team had never come up, maybe a side result of the fact that the dark-haired senshi patrol paths didn’t really seem to cross those of his fellow senshi that often.

No team. For a moment she paused, half way stuck between being excited over the possibility of recruiting him and a nagging worry that she might be seen as trying to force him into it. She couldn't be too pushy.. but Nysa had also told her to be less wishy washy and more confident. Her teal eyes shifted to at least try and make eye contact.

"I'm kind of in the process of starting a team actually. The Celestial Shepherds. So far we have a few senshi and knights."

She had begun to fidget nervously with her hair, swirling a few loose strands around and around her finger.

"If you wanted to check it out and see if you like it I'd be happy to invite you to a meeting."

"Right now it's mostly just a group of friends and like minded people. You know, people who want to use their powers to help people."
