Sand.
Dak wiggled his toes in it, smiling happily. It was warm from the sun's energy beating down, and it felt good on his paw pads. If he stopped and concentrated, he could feel himself sinking little by little. Yipping happily, he tore himself free of the earth's grasp and bounced in a little circle. He loved being on the beach.
"Stop playing around, Dak. We've got work to do."
Oh right. He raced toward the sound of his human's voice. She was bent over her overturned boat, using it like a table as she handled the fish they'd caught early this morning. This was their schedule. Catch fish in the dark hours of the morning, bring them home and inventory them for selling, then head out again as the sun began to set and return after dark to do the same. She tossed him a small, silver-blue fish and though his mouth drool, he returned it to the water and let it go. He couldn't eat it, because his human got mad. He figured it was because they needed to grow bigger so they could be caught again and then sold.
This was life and work, and it was not perfect, but it was better.

Jogging down the length of the beach Warwick's tongue lolled happily from his parted jaws. The warmth of the mid-morning sun on his wet fur set his blood in motion after playing in the chilled ocean waves. All this fresh air had the Cull feeling feisty, turning on his haunches to gaze at Castiel strolling along several paces behind him. With pants rolled nearly up to his knees and no shoes, Warwick's human seemed to be enjoying the new scenery too. An eager bark catching him off guard. Can't you move any faster?!
"Wha~t? This is my vacation too.. go chase some birds. I'll catch up." A quiet voice lilted easily, carried on the breeze that ruffled his hair. For once it was free of the loose ponytail that normally kept the unruly, shoulder blade length mob of hair somewhat organized. Flowing over his shoulders, framed by a rumpled white shirt that was only half buttoned.
Truthfully, the cull enjoyed the easy manner his new human possessed. He seemed always to try to retain an upbeat demeanor, even when the odds were stacked against them. And if Castiel was willing to try, then Warwick was too. Suit yourself!
Swinging back, Wick stretched into a dash down the smooth shoreline. Kicking up sand with every bound and barking at any seabirds cocky enough to remain land bound in his presence. It wasn't until he noticed another lion-tailed Mokai and its owner hovering near the ocean break that Warwick even began to slow his pace. Dropping quickly into a walk and then a full stop as he drew up short near by. Close enough to be in plain sight, but not close enough to warrant any unwanted altercation.
Chancing a glance of her shoulder, Warwick realized that Castiel was no where in sight and the idea of meeting strangers on his own made fidget in place, uneasily. Shaking the sand that stuck to his damp paws.

The fish that Raini handed him this time was even smaller than usual. He could barely grip it in his teeth as he trotted to the water to release it, and he found himself staring after it for a moment as it swam away. How had such a small fish got caught in the net? It must have been trapped among the larger fish.
When the little cull turned, he immediately tilted his head. The mokai in the distance didn't appear to be a pearl diver, but what would any others be doing this far down the beach? He only hesitated a moment before running to his human and tugging the lip of her boot to alert her, but when she peeked over her shoulder, she only shrugged.
"Well, go say hi."
He whined for a short while, keeping an eye on the stranger, but Raini only ignored him. Well... He supposed if he was careful...
Dak approached the figure cautiously, looking ready to bolt in the other direction at the slightest sign of trouble. "..Hi?"

Warwick watched the pair quietly for the short while his presence went unnoticed, head falling to one side with bemusement. The human kept handing her Mokai shiny, writhing creatures that he returned to the big, blue waters. Having never visited the ocean before today, despite the fact that he had been born on the island the sight of fish was a new experience for the sheltered cull.
As the duo worked, oblivious to him, Wick felt envy squirm in his belly. He wanted to be useful to Castiel, but the drifting musician wasn't making it an easy task. Considering the idea for a moment, his thoughts were abruptly interrupted by an unfamiliar voice and hesitant greeting.
Aah! Slender frame leapt a step backwards in surprise. When had he gotten so close?! The sand had helped mask the sound of approaching paw steps and now the culls were staring at each other from a respectable distance. I was just watching.
Warwick stated defensively, glancing over his shoulder. Still no sign of Castiel. Had his new owner dumped him already? Twitching ears lowered against his skull. Would he really do that?
